After reports of a ballistic missile's launch, North Korea has said that it conducted "another important" test for reconnaissance satellite systems, state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday.

The launch was conducted by North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) and the Academy of Defence Science "under the plan of developing a reconnaissance satellite," KCNA reported.

This was the second such launch in a week to test satellite equipment. It was also the ninth missile launch this year.

The latest test comes just days ahead of a presidential election in South Korea on Wednesday.

Like the last test, the KCNA has not elaborated again on the type of rocket used in the launch. But the authorities in South Korea said that it appeared to be a ballistic missile fired from an area near Pyongyang where its international airport is located.

No further details were given out.

Japan also confirmed this launch. A defence ministry spokesman, while speaking to AFP said, "potential ballistic missile(s)" were fired from North Korea. The Japanese coastguard also issued a warning to vessels about a "potentially ballistic missile possibly launched from North Korea".

Japanese foreign minister Masayoshi was on live TV, talking about Ukraine when news of North Korea's launch came out.

"This situation in Ukraine is not something that stays just in Ukraine or in Europe. But it could potentially affect the entire world, or Indo-Pacific region or in East Asia in our view," he said.

In its first comments since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, North Korea's foreign ministry posted a statement by a researcher calling the United States the "root cause" of the European crisis for pursuing unilateral sanctions and pressure while disregarding Russia's legitimate demands for its security.

Washington has pursued "military supremacy in disregard of the legitimate demand of Russia for its security" according to the commentary, attributed to Ri Ji Song, a researcher at the North's Society for International Politics Study.

Kim Jong Un vows to strengthen ties with China and together 'frustrate' threats from US

North Korea marked the 80th birthday of leader Kim Jong Un's late father with a mass outdoor meeting in sub-zero temperatures, state media reported Wednesday, but no missiles or military parade.

Kim was joined by top officials in celebrating the "Day of the Shining Star" in snowy Samjiyon, a city near Mt Paektu, where official narratives say Kim Jong Il was born in a secret guerilla camp on February 16.

The North Korean calendar is peppered with anniversaries related to the nation's official history, in particular to Kim's father and his grandfather Kim Il Sung, the country's founding leader.

The occasions are celebrated with flower shows, mass dances and laudatory tributes in state media, in what analysts say is a means to instil loyalty to the leadership.

Kim Il Sung's April 15 birthday is called the Day of the Sun.

Photos and video in North Korean state media Wednesday showed participants gathered before a giant statue of Kim Jong Il to celebrate what the official KCNA news agency called "the great auspicious holiday of the nation".

The crowd was said to have burst into "stormy cheers" at the sight of leader Kim Jong Un, who has called Samjiyon -- located along the Chinese border in Ryanggang province -- the "home of our revolution".

Experts say Pyongyang could use its next key anniversary -- the 110th birthday of Kim Il Sung on April 15 -- to carry out a major weapons test.

North Korea marked the 80th birthday of leader Kim Jong Un's late father with a mass outdoor meeting in sub-zero temperatures, state media reported Wednesday, but no missiles or military parade.

Traditionally, the streets of North Korean cities are lined with red flowers ahead of Kim Jong-il’s birthday, who died aged 69 in 2011.

But this year, gardeners struggled to get a steady supply of firewood to get the correct temperature and humidity in the greenhouses where the Kimjongilia flowers are grown, reported Daily NK News.

The manager of a farm growing Kimjongilia flower in Samsu County, in the northern Ryanggang province, was arrested on Wednesday.

He was sentenced to six months in a forced labour camp for not taking enough care of his plants, a source told the Seoul-based news outlet.

Apart from Han, another man in his 40s surnamed Choi, who was in charge of the greenhouse boilers, was also given a three-month sentence at a forced labour camp for not “properly setting the temperature.”

In North Korea, Kimjongilia is referred to as the “immortal flower” and special greenhouses cultivating the plant can be found throughout the country.

However, due to difficulties in growing the flower, some are imported from China.

Korean drama 'Snowdrop' is all set to premiere in India on OTT platform Disney+Hotstar on February 9. The show has been in the news ever since the first trailer came out. The show has just wrapped up in the South Korean network JTBC and received modest ratings and reviews. But 'Snowdrop' remained in news right from the beginning- even before it was aired in South Korea- for its controversial story which many alleged was insensitive to Korean history.

The show stars popular Korean actor Jung Hae-in and marks the acting debut of BLACKPINK singer Jisoo.

What is the plot of 'Snowdrop'?

The story is set in 1987 - an important time in South Korean history, as it was the year that citizens protested and called for an end to the authoritarian government.

The series is primarily a love story of Im Soo-ho(Jung Hae-in), a North Korean spy and Young-ro (Jisoo), a college student. Jung plays a spy, who is discovered in a bloodied condition by Jisoo, and she hides him in her dormitory room as she presumes him to be as a pro-democracy activist. With the help of her friends, she hides him from the government, who are actually looking for the North Korean spy.

What is the controversy?

Months before the show aired in South Korea, in March 2021, the show landed in trouble when the synopsis of the show leaked online giving an impression that it was distorting history.

Based on the synopsis, people believed that the male lead is a spy, who has infiltrated the activist movement, while another lead character is a team leader at the Agency For National Security.

The network on which the show was to air, JTBC, provided clarification on the plot soon after but the opposition on the show remained. Most found the show insulting as it depicted a North Korean spy's involved with the pro-democracy movement.

The socio-political context has been deeply emotional for most in the country. The protestors for the regime in the 1980s were falsely accused of being North Korean spies. The pro-democracy protesters were imprisoned, tortured and killed by the government to suppress voices.

The uproar continued after the release of the first two episodes in December 2021. Fans took to social media to discuss the problems with the show- and claimed that the team was 'insensitive' to people who had struggled and fought for democracy in the country.

Jisoo’s name in the show further angered sentiments, with many saying that her character’s initial name was also the name of a real-life protestor, whose husband was killed after he was falsely accused of being a North Korean spy. People also had problems with the way Central government intelligence was depicted on the show- who were typically tasked to arrest North Korean spies.

They alleged that the show was glorifying a lead character from the Agency For National Security Planning (NSP), which was part of the authoritarian regime at the time. The use of a symbolic song for the democracy movement in the show was also criticised.

The clarification

A petition demanding the cancellation of the show was posted on the website of the Blue House (the executive office and official residence of South Korea’s head of state) soon after the show premiered. The petition had over 300, 000 signatures and alleged that the show “defames the value and reputation of the democratisation movement”.

Following the backlash, JTBC issued a statement explaining the background and motif of including important incidents from History in the show.

"With this background, it contains a fictional story of the party in power colluding with the North Korean government in order to maintain authority. 'Snowdrop' is a creative work that shows the personal stories of individuals who were used and victimized by those in power,” the statement read.

The statement also stated that no spy in 'Snowdrop' leads the democratization movement.

The makers insisted that most of the misunderstandings and concerns over “history distortion” and “disparaging the democratization movement” would be answered as the drama progresses. JTBC stood firm on their story, though some advertisers were quick to opt-out.

The outrage continues

While the show has ended in South Korea, it still continues to be in news. On January 30 this year, in an open letter Korean professors and scholars asked the president of Disney+, Asia Pacific, to find experts and evaluated the historical facts in the drama. The letter was addressed to Walt Disney’s Asia Pacific president Luke Kang.

North Korea test-fired 7 missiles in January 2022 alone. The 7th test has sent alarm bells ringing. On Sunday, Pyongyang launched the Hwasong-12 missile which has South Asia and Guam within striking range. The test is being called a 'wake-up call'. Palki Sharma explains.

North Korea has confirmed the testing of a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) on Sunday, state media reported on Monday.

A camera, which was fitted with the test warhead, took photos while it was in space, said KCNA.

This comes as US and South Korean officials warned the latest missile launch may lead to resumed testing of long-range weapons and nuclear bombs.

North Korea confirms Hwasong-12 IRBM test, shares pictures taken in space

After Pyongyang sent a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile into space on Sunday, the US issued a straightforward call to North Korea to join direct negotiations regarding its nuclear and missile programmes with no preconditions.

A senior Biden administration official told reporters, "We believe it is completely appropriate and completely correct to start having some serious discussions."

The US has frequently sought dialogue with North Korea under Joe Biden's leadership, but has been turned down.

Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, met with Donald Trump three times, but none of the meetings resulted in Kim's desire for the sanctions to be lifted.

According to a Biden official, the latest North Korean test is part of an "increasingly destabilising" pattern that is in violation of UN Security Council resolutions and thus international law.

A US official spoke out after North Korea's largest missile test since 2017.

The launch was viewed as a step forward in the process of resuming long-range testing.

"Of course, we're concerned," the US official said, that Pyongyang might do so and end a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear testing.

"It requires a response," he said. "You will see us taking some steps that are designed to show our commitment to our allies … and at the same time we reiterate our call for diplomacy. We stand ready and we are very serious about trying to have discussions that address concerns on both sides."

Pyongyang's playbook of brinkmanship to gain concessions appears to have been revived with the missile fired on Sunday, which appeared to be the most powerful since Biden took office.

The missile was fired on a high trajectory, allegedly to avoid neighbouring countries' territorial territories, reaching a maximum altitude of 2,000 kilometres (1,242 miles) and travelling 800 kilometres (497 miles) before landing in the sea, according to the Japanese and South Korean forces.

The flight details point to North Korea's longest-range missile since 2017, when it sent two ballistic missiles over Japan and three more that had the ability to strike deep into the United States.

After Pyongyang sent a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile into space on Sunday, the US issued a straightforward call to North Korea to join direct negotiations regarding its nuclear and missile programmes with no preconditions. A senior Biden administration official told reporters, "We believe it is completely appropriate and completely correct to start having some serious discussions." The US has frequently sought dialogue with North Korea under Joe Biden's leadership, but has been turned down. Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, met with Donald Trump three times, but none of the meetings resulted in Kim's desire for the sanctions to be lifted. The launch was viewed as a step forward in the process of resuming long-range testing. "Of course, we're concerned," the US official said, that Pyongyang might do so and end a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear testing. "You will see us taking some steps that are designed to show our commitment to our allies … and at the same time we reiterate our call for diplomacy. We stand ready and we are very serious about trying to have discussions that address concerns on both sides." Pyongyang's playbook of brinkmanship to gain concessions appears to have been revived with the missile fired on Sunday, which appeared to be the most powerful since Biden took office. This month, North Korea has launched seven missiles. (With inputs from agencies)

After latest missile test by Pyongyang, US urges North Korea to join direct talks

The United States has criticized the record-breaking seventh missile launch in a month by North Korea ramping up the firepower, Pyongyang tested its most powerful missile since 2017. Washington is concerned, the escalating missile test could lead to resume tests of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

In 7th test in 2022, North Korea fires longest-range missile since 2017

North Korea on Sunday carried out what appeared to be its boldest ballistic missile test in years, raising the stakes in a flurry of launches that analysts said were meant to put pressure on President Joe Biden.

The missile was launched at 7:52 a.m. from the North Korean province of Jagang, which borders China, and flew across the North before falling into the sea off the country’s east coast, the South Korean military said. It was the North’s seventh missile test this month.

The office of South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, called the projectile an intermediate-range ballistic missile and condemned the test as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Flight data suggested it was the North’s most powerful launch since November 2017, when it tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that flew much higher.

Moon warned that North Korea could soon end the self-imposed moratorium on long-range ballistic missile and nuclear tests that its leader, Kim Jong Un, announced in 2018. Last week, Kim suggested that his government might resume such tests.

“If it’s an intermediate-range ballistic missile that they launched, it means that North Korea has come close to abandoning its moratorium,” Moon said at a meeting of his National Security Council, which he convened in response to the Sunday launch, his office said.

“North Korea must stop raising tensions and pressure and accept offers from South Korea and the United States to restart dialogue,” he said.

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command condemned the launch and urged the North “to refrain from further destabilizing acts,” though it said the test had posed no immediate threat to the United States or its allies. In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that Japan “strongly” protested the test.

North Korea appears to have carried out more missile tests in January than in any month since Kim came to power a decade ago. The launch Sunday was its third in the last week.

Kim has vowed to focus on expanding the North’s nuclear and missile capabilities since 2019, when his direct diplomacy with then-President Donald Trump collapsed. He has rebuffed the Biden administration’s repeated offers to resume talks “without preconditions”; instead, he has ordered his government to prepare for “long-term confrontation” with the United States.

Moon and South Korean analysts said the recent tests reminded them of 2017. That year, the first of Trump’s presidency, the North steadily escalated its weapons tests, from short-range missile launches to intermediate-range ballistic missile tests. Eventually, it tested three ICBMs and what it said was a hydrogen bomb.

Trump responded by persuading the U.N. Security Council to impose more sanctions on the North and by famously threatening the country with “fire and fury.” He went on to meet directly with Kim three times, but their personal diplomacy ended with no agreement on rolling back North Korea’s nuclear program or lifting the sanctions.

“It has been the same cycle repeating itself: North Korean provocations, followed by a round of negotiations and their collapse and a pause in diplomacy,” said Cheon Seong-whun, a former head of the Korea Institute for National Unification, a government-funded research institute in Seoul. “North Korea is now starting the cycle all over again, raising tensions with missile provocations.

“Its goal is to make the United States and its allies accept its nuclear arsenal as a fait accompli,” he said.

The last time North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile was in September 2017, when it tested its Hwasong-12 missile.

The missile launched Sunday was fired at a steep angle, reaching an altitude of 1,242 miles while covering a distance of 497 miles, South Korean defense officials said. When North Korea tests intermediate- and long-range missiles, it usually launches them at a steep angle.

That ensures that they don’t fly over Japan, which would be considered extremely provocative by Tokyo, Washington and their allies. Such missiles could cover much more distance if they were launched at normal ballistic missile trajectories.

The flight data from Sunday’s launch was comparable to that of a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile that North Korea launched in May 2017. That missile reached an altitude of 1,310 miles, landing in the sea 480 miles from the launch site.

But later that year, North Korea carried out more provocative tests of the same type of missile, launching them on trajectories that sent them over Japan. In those two tests, the missiles flew up to 2,300 miles before landing in the Pacific. That range would enable them to reach U.S. bases on Guam.

When the North last tested an ICBM, in 2017, it reached an altitude of 2,796 miles and covered a distance of 596 miles. After that test, North Korea claimed that its ballistic missiles could target parts or all of the continental United States with nuclear warheads.

Cheon and other analysts said they did not expect the North to test another ICBM immediately. They said it was likelier to raise tensions gradually, with a series of increasingly provocative moves.

Still, Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said it was only “a matter of time” before the North launched another ICBM. “North Korea thinks that Washington is ignoring it despite its recent tests of short-range missiles,” he said. “So it is upping its pressure on Washington, calculating the timing for an ICBM test based on how Washington will respond.”

The recent launches have surprised some analysts in the region, who had expected the North to refrain from such provocations before the Winter Olympics in Beijing, which start this week. China is the North’s only major ally.

The United States’ worsening relations with China and Russia may have given Kim an opening to test weapons with impunity. When Washington asked the UN Security Council to impose more sanctions on North Korea for the recent tests, both Beijing and Moscow vetoed the move.

The tests enable the North to upgrade its missile forces while putting more pressure on the Biden administration to come to the table with more favoruable terms, analysts said.

Analysts said Kim also hoped to boost morale at home as his government prepares for two major events — the 80th anniversary of the birth of his father, Kim Jong Il, in February, and the 110th anniversary of the birth of his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, in April. Both preceded him as North Korea’s leaders.

On Friday, North Korea’s state media said Kim Jong Un had visited “a munitions factory producing a major weapon system” to encourage his weapons developers.

Yang said the North was likely to keep testing missiles at least through May, when whoever wins South Korea’s presidential election in March will take office. “It will create an extreme situation before switching to a new phase of diplomacy with Washington and the new government in Seoul,” he said.
