The hackers of North Korea allegedly entered the systems of South Korean chip equipment makers, as per South Korea's spy agency. North Korea has been making efforts to create semiconductors for its weapons programmes, said the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

This was reported a month after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol had warned that North Korea is likely to stage provocations like cyber attacks for meddling with upcoming elections.

<h2>North Korea escalates hacking efforts&nbsp;</h2>

North Korea last year hacked the emails of President Yoon's aide.

"We believe that North Korea might possibly be preparing to produce its own semiconductors in the face of difficulties in procuring them due to sanctions," said the NIS, in a statement.

It stated that Pyongyang may have been making efforts to hack South Korean chip equipment firms because they need chips for the weapons programmes, which include satellites and missiles.

The NIS has stated that North Korean hackers broke into the two chip equipment companies' servers in December and February, stealing photographs of their facilities and product designs.

It further issued a warning to other companies in the chip-making industry to remain alert against cyber attacks.

The spy agency, however, failed to mention which firms were affected and did not even clarify if North Korea was able to get anything of value.

The NIS claimed that the companies of South Korea had remained a key target of North Korean hackers since last year.

According to NIS, the hackers employed a technique known as "living off the land," which decreases malicious codes and uses legitimate and existing tools installed within servers, which makes it difficult for hackers to detect it using security software.

President Yoon's office last month said that an aide's email account was breached which was caused by a violation of security regulations and added that the official system had not been hacked.

North Korea has always rejected claims of being involved in cyber-crimes, however, Seoul has blamed the hackers of North Korea for stealing large sums of money, generally in the form of cryptocurrency, for funding the regime as well as its nuclear weapons programme.

It has been estimated that North Korea has stolen almost $3bn (£2.36bn) since 2016. It is also believed to carry out hacks with the aim of stealing state secrets, which include details of advanced weapons technology.

North Korea, which has faced extreme international sanctions, is becoming increasingly sophisticated in the way cyber attacks are carried out.

North Korea sent millions of munitions to Russia in exchange for food: South Korea

North Korea's first spy satellite, which it launched in November 2023, is "alive", the space experts on Tuesday (Feb 20) said after they detected changes in its orbit.

The latest development indicates that Pyongyang is successfully controlling the spacecraft. However, its capabilities remain unknown.

After its launch in the month of November, North Korea claimed that the satellite had captured images of sensitive military and political sites in South Korea, the United States and elsewhere, but has not released any pictures.

Although, the independent radio trackers have not yet detected signals from the satellite.

"But now we can definitely say the satellite is alive," Marco Langbroek, a satellite expert at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, wrote in a blog post.

From Feb 19 to 24, the satellite conducted manoeuvres to raise its perigee from 488 km to 497 km (303.2 miles to 308.8 miles), said Langbroek, citing data from the US–led&nbsp;Combined Space Operations Center.

"The manoeuvre proves that Malligyong-1 is not dead and that North Korea has control over the satellite - something that was disputed," he said.

South Korea's Defence Ministry also released a statement saying that it had assessed that the satellite was in orbit, however, it stated that it would not share any remark on the individual analysis.

On Monday, Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said that the satellite was not showing any signs of performing other tasks or engaging in reconnaissance.

"While we indeed currently cannot be sure whether the satellite does successfully take imagery, it at least performs orbital manoeuvres, so in that sense it is functional," Langbroek wrote of Shin's comments.

He said that the orbit-raising manoeuvre was a surprising development as the presence of an onboard propulsion system was not expected and the satellites that were launched by North Korea previously never manoeuvred.

"Having the capacity to raise the satellite's orbit is a big deal," Langbroek said.

Harvard astronomer and orbital tracker Jonathan McDowell, according to news agency Reuters, said that the satellite appeared to be fixing its position in space as it moved to the same spot where it was shortly after the launch, instead of making a hostile progression towards another country's satellite.&nbsp;

Russian President Vladimir Putin gifted a Russian-made car to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Pyongyang's state media on Tuesday (Feb 20), as the two countries bolster ties in areas of defence, tourism and others.&nbsp;

The gift has violated the multiple UN sanctions on North Korea over the nuclear and other weapons programmes of Kim Jong Un. The sanctions, passed in the past with approval also from Russia, bans the the import of any luxury goods or vehicles into the country.

Kim was "presented with a car made in Russia for his personal use by Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, president of the Russian Federation,"&nbsp;reported Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gifted a Russian-made car to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Pyongyang's state media on Tuesday (Feb 20), as the two countries bolster ties in areas of defence, tourism and others. The gift has violated the multiple UN sanctions on North Korea over the nuclear and other weapons programmes of Kim Jong Un. The sanctions, passed in the past with approval also from Russia, bans the the import of any luxury goods or vehicles into the country. Kim was "presented with a car made in Russia for his personal use by Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, president of the Russian Federation," reported Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency. Putin gifts Russian-made car to North Korea's Kim Jong Un, violating UN sanctions

For five years, a New York City man managed to live rent-free in a landmark Manhattan hotel by exploiting a little known local housing law. But his clever scheme took a bizarre turn when he filed paperwork claiming ownership of the entire New Yorker Hotel building, leading to his arrest this week on charges of filing false property records.

<h2>How did he manage to stay for free?</h2>

Mickey Barreto, 48, as per a CBC report, found a loophole that allowed occupants of single rooms in buildings constructed before 1969 to demand a six-month lease. He and his boyfriend paid about $200 for a room in the Art déco-style New Yorker Hotel&nbsp;built in 1930, and when he asked for a lease, the hotel promptly kicked him out.

Barreto then took the case to court and won on appeal, eventually obtaining possession of his room. He lived there without paying rent until July 2023 because the building's owners never negotiated a lease with him and couldn't kick him out.

However, as per Manhattan prosecutors, in 2019, Barreto uploaded a fake deed to a city website, claiming ownership of the entire building from the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, which purchased the property in 1976. The church was founded in South Korea by the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a self-proclaimed messiah.

He even tried to charge rent to a hotel tenant, "registering the hotel under his name with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for water and sewage payments, and demanding the hotel's bank transfer its accounts to him".

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said, "As alleged, Mickey Barreto repeatedly and fraudulently claimed ownership of one of the City's most iconic landmarks, the New Yorker Hotel."

The New Yorker Hotel, situated a block from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, has been an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel has a rich history, having hosted notable figures like inventor Nikola Tesla and boxer Muhammad Ali.

Barreto's legal saga is ongoing, with the Unification Church suing him over the deed claim in 2019. He argues that the judge who gave him possession of his room indirectly gave him the entire building because it had never been subdivided. However, a judge ruled that Barreto cannot portray himself as the owner of the building in the meantime.

Barreto claims his actions are aimed at denying profits to the Unification Church, known for conducting mass weddings and criticised for its recruiting methods and relationship with North Korea.&nbsp;

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slammed&nbsp;countries that are buying weapons at the cost of policies to tackle global warming and hunger. His comments came even as a major think tank said in an annual assessment report that&nbsp;global defence spending increased by nine per cent last year, hitting a record high of $2.2 trillion.

‘Distressing to see’

“It is distressing to see governments spending heavily on arms, while starving budgets for food security, climate action, and broader sustainable development,” said Guterres, on Tuesday (Feb 13) during a UN Security Council meeting on links between food, climate and conflict crises.

He also spoke about how the “deadly nexus of hunger, climate chaos, and conflict” and the threat it poses to international peace and security can be broken with policies that address all three issues “together”.&nbsp;

The UN chief also warned that without action “the situation will deteriorate” as conflicts around the world are “multiplying”.

He added, “The climate crisis is set to spiral, as emissions continue to rise. And acute food insecurity has been increasing year on year.”

The UN climate chief Simon Stiell further emphasised the links between the three issues and told the Security Council that combined their impact is “devastating.”

“There is no national security without food security. And there will be no food security without enhanced action to stop climate change,” Stiell said.

<h2>World faces a ‘dangerous decade’</h2>

On the same day, a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) highlighted that countries spent a record amount on defence last year and attributed it to heightened geopolitical tensions. It also noted that expenditure on defence across the world will rise further in 2024.&nbsp;

“The current military-security situation heralds what is likely to be a more dangerous decade, characterised by the brazen application by some of military power to pursue claims – evoking a ‘might is right’ approach – as well as the desire among like-minded democracies for stronger bilateral and multilateral defence ties in response,’’ the report said.

In 2023, global defence spending rose nine per cent to $2.2 trillion, according to the report, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine entering its third year and amid concerns that China and other militarily powerful states may try to impose their will on neighbouring countries.&nbsp;

The expenditure is expected to rise in 2024, said the IISS, amid international uncertainty as the situation in the Middle East deteriorates in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.&nbsp;

The conflict seems to be spreading as Iranian-backed militant groups including Yemen-based Houthis and Lebanon-based Hezbollah have entered the fray and the United States launching retaliatory attacks against the forces in the region.&nbsp;

The report also highlighted rising tensions in the Arctic, North Korea’s missile tests and pursuit of nuclear weapons, and the rise of military regimes in the Sahel region of Africa as contributors to a “deteriorating security environment.”

The report by the London-based think tank is an annual estimate of the global military situation for 65 years. The near two-digit hike in the spending on arms reflects a “deteriorating security landscape,” said Bastian Giegerich, the IISS director general.&nbsp;

Notably, the increase is even steeper among NATO countries which have supported Ukraine amid fears of&nbsp;further Russian incursions into Europe.

According to the report,&nbsp;major non-NATO allies&nbsp;have boosted military spending by 32 per cent since Russia annexed&nbsp;Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014.&nbsp;

North Korea on Wednesday (Feb 14) morning fired multiple cruise missiles off its east coast, the South Korean military claimed.

Wednesday's missile launch took place around 9 am local time (0000 GMT) off the eastern coastal city of Wonsan which is the&nbsp;latest in a string of weapons tests conducted by Pyongyang this year.&nbsp;

"Our military detected several unknown cruise missiles over the waters northeast of Wonsan around 09:00 today and South Korea-US intelligence authorities are conducting a detailed analysis,"&nbsp;the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement.

"While strengthening surveillance and vigilance, our military is cooperating closely with the United States and closely monitoring additional signs and activities from North Korea," it added.

North Korea launches multiple cruise missiles in fresh escalation, claims Seoul military

North Korea, in a bid to bring about a "qualitative change" in its defence capabilities, on Monday (Feb 12) said that it has developed a new ballistic control system for a multiple rocket launcher.

Pyongyang's Academy of Defense Science successfully carried out a "ballistic control test firing of 240-mm calibre multiple rocket launcher shells" on Saturday (Feb 10) to develop a "controllable shell and ballistic control system" for the launcher, reported state news agency KCNA.

According to the report, the new rocket launcher would now be "reevaluated" and its battlefield role would also be "increased" due to what it termed "rapid technical improvement."

Earlier this year, North Korea released a statement declaring South Korea as its "principal enemy", shutting down the agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and further threatening war over "even 0.001 millimetres" of territorial infringement.

The South had then issued a stern warning stating that the nuclear action around the Korean Peninsula would lead to the escalation of tensions.

Seoul's military had said that "the repeated artillery fire within the prohibited hostile act zone by North Korea poses a threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and escalates tensions".

In his first public response to the recent release of the hidden camera footage where South Korea's first lady, Kim Keon Hee, was seen accepting a luxury designer handbag as a gift, President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday (Feb 8) called it a "political manoeuvre".

However, he assured that clearer lines would be drawn in order to ensure such incidents do not happen in future.

During his interview with broadcaster KBS, Yoon stated&nbsp;that the footage, which was filmed in September 2022, and released in November 2023, just before elections in the country, should be considered as "a political manoeuvre".

"However, it's not important whether to call it a political manoeuvre or not," he said. "What's important is to set clearer boundaries with others to prevent something like this from happening in the future."

The pastor, who offered the Dior handbag worth 3 million won ($2,250) and secretly captured the act, claimed to have ties with Kim's father who passed away when she was a child, claimed Yoon.

He further said that the fact&nbsp;he was living in their private home ahead of shifting to a newly constructed presidential residence may also have added to the confusion about how the gifts should have been handled.

<h2>'Dior bag scandal'</h2>

The pastor, Reverend Abraham Choi, who presented the gift to the first lady, earlier told the news agency Reuters that he wanted to raise concerns about Yoon's hawkish North Korea policies and that offering expensive gifts seemed to be the way to secure a meeting with Kim Keon Hee.

Choi used a wristwatch to record himself presenting the designer handbag to Hee, who is heard saying "please don't buy an expensive item like this" in the footage.

However, she is not seen returning the handbag.&nbsp;

Accepting the gift is a breach of South Korean law where public officials and their spouses cannot accept gifts worth more than $750.&nbsp;

News agency AFP, citing a report from Yonhap News Agency, said that the gift was being "stored according to the relevant regulations".

After the incident came to light, members of Yoon's conservative People Power Party (PPP) urged the president and his wife to issue an apology and admit that receiving the gift was inappropriate.

The pastor, who offered the Dior handbag worth 3 million won ($2,250) and secretly captured the act, claimed to have ties with Kim's father who passed away when she was a child, claimed Yoon. He further said that the fact he was living in their private home ahead of shifting to a newly constructed presidential residence may also have added to the confusion about how the gifts should have been handled. Choi used a wristwatch to record himself presenting the designer handbag to Hee, who is heard saying "please don't buy an expensive item like this" in the footage. However, she is not seen returning the handbag. Accepting the gift is a breach of South Korean law where public officials and their spouses cannot accept gifts worth more than $750. North Korea fires more cruise missiles into the West Sea

North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles off its west coast on Friday, South Korea's military said, marking the fourth time in just over a week that Pyongyang has launched such missiles off both coasts.

The South's military said the launch took place around 11 a.m. (0200 GMT) but did not provide further details.

North Korea has said since last week that it had tested "strategic" cruise missiles, implying they may be designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Earlier this week, state media reported the country had tested its new submarine-launched cruise missiles (SLCM). Leader Kim Jong Un was on site to supervise the launch, which used missiles with the same identifying markings as the land-launched missiles.

South Korea's military has said the North appeared to be testing the missiles to upgrade their capabilities.

The latest launch comes after the North said early on Friday that Kim had inspected a shipyard in the port city of Nampho on the west coast and stressed the importance of a strong naval force in "war preparations", according to state media.

"Strengthening naval force is the most important issue in pushing ahead with war preparations", KCNA cited Kim as saying during his visit to the dockyard, a military shipbuilding base also referred to as Nampo.

Kim was briefed on the construction of various warships under a new "huge plan" decided by the North Korean leadership, KCNA said, without elaborating.

KCNA said on Monday that Kim had inspected the construction of a nuclear submarine and discussed issues related to the manufacturing of other types of new warships, but gave no details.

At a major ruling party meeting in 2021, Kim has laid out a plan to develop and upgrade the country's military capabilities, including the construction of nuclear submarines and underwater drones that can mount nuclear attacks.

In recent months, the North has tested an array of weapons including ballistic missile systems that are under development and an underwater drone.

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of escalating tensions with large-scale military drills, leaving it with no choice but to step up preparations for a nuclear war.

On Friday, the U.S. Special Operations Command said it had completed training with South Korea's special operations forces.
