North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the country's first nuclear counterattack drill which simulated its "nuclear trigger" management system, confirmed state news agency KCNA on Tuesday (April 23).

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the country's first nuclear counterattack drill which simulated its "nuclear trigger" management system, confirmed state news agency KCNA on Tuesday (April 23). Several short-range ballistic missiles were fired by North Korea on Monday (April 22) towards the sea off its east coast, stated South Korea's military. North Korea's attempt to simulate its "nuclear trigger" management system appeared as a warning signal to its enemies. To take part in the testing of the nationwide nuclear management system, known as "nuclear trigger", North Korea's artillery forces joined the first such drills of the country on Monday (April 22) to showcase the country's diversified nuclear capabilities and retaliate against "provocative and invasive" military exercises of the United States and South Korea, reported KCNA. The simulation drills involved firing artillery using mock nuclear warheads and maneuvering troops in a nuclear counterattack posture, if nuclear crisis alerts were issued, as per KCNA. Kim "guided a combined tactical drill simulating a nuclear counterattack involving super-large multiple rocket artillerymen," the report stated. The rockets "hit their island target" nearly 352 kilometres (219 miles) away, the report added. It is believed that North Korea has been making preparations to launch another spy satellite after a reconnaissance satellite was successfully placed in orbit in November. Last week, North Korea said that a strategic cruise missile was fired by the country to test a large warhead as well as a new anti-aircraft missile. South Korea calls it 'blatant provocation', Japan issues alert South Korea's military on Monday (April 22) stated that the missiles covered 300 kilometres from the Pyongyang area before they splashed down in the water east of the Korean peninsula. The launch was branded as a "blatant provocation." The launch was also confirmed by Japan, which also issued an alert, as its government spokesman stated that one missile - which went at a maximum altitude of 50 kilometres - landed outside of the EEZ of the country. Watch: North Korea conducts cruise missile warhead test This is the second launch carried out by Pyongyang in less than a week, which on Friday (April 19) tested a "super-large warhead" that was designed to help fire a strategic cruise missile, as per the state media. The launch of missiles comes after North Korea's ally Russia used its United Nations Security Council veto in March to end monitoring of sanctions violations by the UN on Pyongyang for its nuclear and weapons programme. North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Monday (April 22) towards the sea off its east coast, South Korea's military said in an official statement. The Japanese coast guard issued an alert and said North Korea had fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile.

The NHK broadcaster said that the projectile appeared to have landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The two countries' governments did not immediately provide any further details.

North Korea claimed last week that it test-launched a strategic cruise missile to test an unnamed large warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile. The development comes amid growing Chinese belligerence around Japanese waters as well as larger maritime tensions in East Asia, largely attributed to Beijing's spree of maritime expansionism.

Pyongyang's missile programmes are clandestinely supported by Beijing. The West claims that Moscow's support for North Korea's missile programme has been crucial to its defence posture in the region vis-a-vis American presence in the region.

Earlier this month, North Korea fired a new hypersonic missile as part of its development of solid-fuelled missiles for all ranges of its arsenal.

Pyongyang openly defies a ban imposed by the United Nations Security Council on developing ballistic missiles. North Korea considers international objections against its missile programmes as an infringement of its sovereign right to defend itself.

North Korea expands surveillance of its citizens

To monitor its population even more closely, North Korea is placing surveillance cameras in schools and workplaces.

According to a report, North Korea is collecting fingerprints, photographs and other biometric information from its citizens to keep a record of the population.

The surveillance tools and equipment being used by North Korea are being imported from China. These surveillance tools and domestic software are shrinking the limited space for citizens to conduct private business, access foreign media, or express dissent.

North Korea's ambitions for digital surveillance are hampered by its limitations. Undersupplied electricity and internet infrastructure, and a dependence on human intelligence gathering, make widespread digital monitoring difficult, according to a report by 38 North, a website specialising in North Korean affairs.

New laws and recent information on harsher penalties suggest that the government is cracking down on foreign influence and imported media, likely helped by fences and electronic monitoring systems installed on the border with China during the pandemic.

Martyn Williams, an analyst and co-author of the study with Natalia Slavney said, “Having seen that it’s possible to close the border this firmly, I think they are now devoted to keeping it that way.”

“While in terms of broader surveillance across the country, the pandemic could have played a part, but I think a much bigger role has been played by the fast-reducing cost of surveillance equipment,” Williams said.

To understand North Korean surveillance, researchers analysed domestic and international media reports, reviewed publicly announced research from North Korean institutions, and interviewed 40 escapees.

Additionally, they partnered with unidentified sources to conduct a 2023 survey of 100 current residents via encrypted phone calls, texts, and other methods to guarantee their safety.

As per the state media reports, video surveillance is becoming very common at schools, workplaces and airports. All these surveillance cameras are mostly from China and range from basic video feeds to more advanced models that include features like face recognition.

Experts have warned that China is exporting the technology that powers its AI-powered surveillance to countries around the world.

Regardless of limitations like power shortages and existing human surveillance networks, North Korea seems to be building for a future with widespread video monitoring.

Microsoft, the US-based multinational corporation, has raised concerns over possible Chinese influence and disruptions during elections in the United States, South Korea and India using artificial intelligence-generated content. Beijing apparently made a dry run during the presidential election in Taiwan.

A new report released Friday (Apr 5) by Microsoft Threat Intelligence revealed that the tech company has observed notable trends from state-backed actors "that demonstrate not only doubling down on familiar targets but also attempts to use more sophisticated influence techniques to achieve their goals".

The report said that it expects Chinese state-backed cyber groups to target crucial and high-profile elections with a possible involvement of North Korea also.

The report said, "As populations in India, South Korea and the United States head to the polls, we are likely to see Chinese cyber and influence actors, and to some extent, North Korean cyber actors, work toward targeting these elections."

Chinese influence actors "experimented with new media" and "continued to refine AI-generated or AI-enhanced content" the report said.

Taiwan election: When pro-China disinformation targeted voters

Taiwan had claimed that the presidential election campaign was hit by a wave of disinformation and TikTok videos, which are particularly aimed at candidates China opposes.

Beijing has made it clear that it opposes the frontrunner Lai Ching-te, whose Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) rejects China's assertion that Taiwan is its own territory.

Chinese influence actors "experimented with new media" and "continued to refine AI-generated or AI-enhanced content" the report said. "The influence actors behind these campaigns have shown a willingness to both amplify AI-generated media that benefits their strategic narratives, as well as create their own video, memes, and audio content," it added. Also read: Strong winds sucked out three people from their homes in China while they slept The report highlighted a "notable uptick in content featuring Taiwanese political figures ahead of the January 13 presidential and legislative elections". Besides Taiwan, China also used AI-generated content to spread propaganda related to Japan's disposal of nuclear wastewater, Hawaii's wildfire and Kentucky's train derailment last year in the form of memes and conspiracy theories. According to Microsoft, the news anchors were created by the CapCut tool, which is developed by the Chinese company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok. China hasn't reacted to Microsoft's report yet. Microsoft warns against possible Chinese manipulation during elections in India and US

North Korea successfully test-fired a new mid- to long-range solid-fuel, hypersonic missile, state media KCNA said on Wednesday.

North Korea fired a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile into the sea on Tuesday in a possible test, drawing swift condemnation from South Korea, Japan and the United States.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch, KCNA said, lauding it as a strategic weapon that demonstrates the "absolute superiority" of North Korea's defence technology.

With this, North Korea has "fully turned all tactical, operational, and strategic-grade missiles of different ranges into solid-fuel, with warhead control, and capable of nuclearisation", Kim said, according to KCNA.

Hypersonic missiles are more difficult to intercept, while missiles with solid fuel can be moved and stored more easily, meaning they can be ready to launch at short notice.

Tuesday's test followed a ground test in late March of a solid-fuel engine for a new type of intermediate-range hypersonic missile.

Britain also condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch on Tuesday, saying it breached multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

Meanwhile, a North Korean diplomatic delegation that visited China, Vietnam and Laos, as well as an economic delegation to Russia, have all returned home on Tuesday, KCNA said.
