Dozens of North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Tuesday (June 18) but retreated after warning shots were fired, according to South Korean authorities. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that landmine explosions near the border injured multiple North Korean soldiers. The JCS said that Pyongyang had recently deployed troops in the area to clear scrub and lay mines, as relations between the two Koreas plummet. The Tuesday crossing -- like a previous one on June 9 -- was accidental, with some 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers carrying work tools involved in the incident, it added. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a JCS official said, "Dozens of North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line today... (and) retreated northwards after warning shots were fired." 'Pyongyang pressing ahead with operations' North Korean soldiers tasked with reinforcing the border suffered multiple casualties from "repeated landmine explosion incidents" but they "appear to be recklessly pressing ahead with the operations", the official added. Putin set to visit North Korea Tuesday's incident came just hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Pyongyang, sparking concern in Seoul, which has accused the North of shipping arms to Moscow for use in Ukraine in exchange for help with its nascent satellite programme. The two Koreas remain at war as the 1950-1953 conflict ended in an armistice, and the Demilitarized Zone dividing the peninsula is already one of the most heavily mined places on Earth. North Korea is building roads and walls inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that separates it from the South, a report by the Yonhap news agency said on Saturday (June 15). Citing a source from the South Korean military, the report said that the construction activities are taking place north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) that runs through the middle of the DMZ. The developments come after an incident last week where the South Korean military fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the MDL. "Recently, the North Korean military has been erecting walls, digging the ground and constructing roads in some areas between the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and the Northern Limit Line in the DMZ," the South Korean military source, who chose to remain anonymous, told Yonhap. There appears to be no end to the trash Balloons versus propaganda leaflets between North and South Korea the two call it a tit-for-tat offensive. North Vs South balloon war: South Korean activists make smart balloons to send messages into North

North Korea has once again sent hundreds of balloons filled with trash across the border into South Korea. According to a Yonhap News Agency report citing South Korea's military, Pyongyang&nbsp;floated approximately 310 balloons overnight this time.&nbsp;

The fresh 'trashing' comes after a warning from Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, about a potential "new counteraction" against South Korea's loudspeaker broadcasts and leaflets.

<h2>No toxic material this time</h2>

"The latest batch of waste-loaded balloons sent late Sunday contained scrap paper and plastic, with no toxic material detected so far," reported Yonhap, quoting South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. By early Monday, no additional balloons were observed.

<h2>Kim Yo Jong's warning</h2>

In a statement issued on Sunday (June 9), Kim Yo Jong warned South Korea to halt loudspeaker broadcasts and the scattering of leaflets.&nbsp;

According to North Korea's state news agency KCNA, she cautioned, "If the ROK simultaneously carries out the leaflet scattering and loudspeaker broadcasting provocation over the border, it will undoubtedly witness the new counteraction of the DPRK."

Referring to the loudspeaker broadcasts, Kim said, "This is a prelude to a very dangerous situation."

On Sunday, South Korea resumed loudspeaker broadcasts targeting the North. This decision to continue with psychological warfare, as per Reuters, came after North Korea on Saturday (June 8) began launching 330 balloons with trash attached, with about 80 of them dropping over the border. The nation initially started this balloon warfare, labelled a "low class" move by the Seoul military in May, supposedly in retaliation for South's speaker propaganda.

South Korea's broadcasts, part of psychological warfare tactics, were initially halted under a 2018 agreement between the two Koreas' leaders but resumed following the recent provocations.

The loudspeaker broadcasts, which include world news, information about democratic and capitalist societies, and popular K-pop music, can be heard more than 20 kilometres (12.43 miles) into North Korea.&nbsp;

South Korea's National Security Council said on Sunday (June 9) that it would begin loudspeaker broadcasts directed at North Korea that would be unbearable for the Kim Jong Un regime. This step comes after Pyongyang resumed sending balloons carrying trash across the border. A report by the news agency Reuters said that the council met on Sunday morning after dozens of balloons with trash attached were found in Seoul and areas near the border earlier in the day and overnight. On Sunday, the South Korean military released photos of one balloon floating on a river in Seoul and rubbish scattered in streets in Seoul with police cordoning off the scene. Balloons issue 'very serious' The military said it took the issue of the balloons "very seriously" and was on alert to take action in response as necessary. A warning to the North Last week, Pyongyang said it would temporarily halt sending the balloons because 15 tonnes of trash it sent was probably enough to get the message across on how "unpleasant" it was. However, it vowed to resume if leaflets were again flown from the South by sending a hundred times the amount. A group of activists from South Korea defied the warning and have since flown more balloons to the North with leaflets. North Korea has shown some of the angriest reactions towards the leaflet campaign and the loudspeaker broadcasts, in some cases firing weapons at the balloons and speakers in the past. Balloon war? South Korea flies balloons with anti-Kim Jong Un material, music flash drives into North Korea

South Korea plans to suspend a military agreement signed with North Korea in 2018 aimed at easing tensions, the presidential office said on Monday, after Seoul warned of a strong response to balloons launched by Pyongyang carrying trash to the South.

North Korea has launched hundreds balloons carried by wind across the border that dropped trash throughout South Korea, which called it a provocation and rejected Pyongyang's claim it was done to inconvenience its neighbour.

The National Security Council said it would raise the plan to suspend the entirety of the military agreement for approval by the cabinet at a meeting on Tuesday.

Suspending the agreement will pave the way for the South to conduct training near the military border and take "sufficient and immediate measures" in response to North Korea's provocation, the Council said in a statement.

It did not elaborate what those measures may be.

The pact, which was the most substantive deal to come out months of historic summit meetings between the two Koreas in 2018, had been all but scrapped when Pyongyang declared last year it was no longer bound by it.

Since then, the North deployed troops and weapons at guard posts near the military border.

By continuing to comply with the pact, "there have been considerable problems in our military's readiness posture," the Council said.

South Korea has previously said it would take "unendurable" measures against North Korea for sending the trash balloons over the border, which could include blaring propaganda from loudspeakers positioned at the border directed at the North.

North Korea has said the balloons were in retaliation for a propaganda campaign by North Korean defectors and activists in the South, who regularly send inflatables containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets with food, medicine, money and USB sticks loaded with K-pop music videos and dramas across the border.

North Korea has reacted angrily to the campaign because it is worried about the potential impact of the materials on the psychology of the people who read or listen to them and on the state's control of the public, experts said.

North Korea said Sunday (June 2) it would stop sending balloons carrying trash into South Korea, reported the country's state media. The announcement came after the North sent hundreds of such baloons in recent days. "We will temporarily suspend the action of scattering waste paper beyond the border," said the official Korean Central News Agency. "This is because our action is a thorough countermeasure." North Korea sent 600 more balloons carrying trash into South Korea overnight, Seoul said on Sunday (June 2). A day before, authorities in Seoul warned public to report such incidents to the military or the police. In a public message, people were asked to refrain from touching balloons "identified in the sky near Seoul" and to report them as these were "being handled by the military." Similar messages were issued in other regions. On Sunday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the balloons carrying garbage such as cigarette butts, cloth, paper waste and plastic were found across Seoul from 8 pm Saturday to 10 am Sunday. 'Gifts of sincerity' Earlier this week, North Korea sent hundreds of balloons carrying trash and excrement. Pyongyang called these balloons "gifts of sincerity" and vowed to send more. Other images appeared to show trash strewn around collapsed balloons, with the word "excrement" written on a bag in one photograph. Reuters reported that by Wednesday, more than 260 balloons had been detected, and most of them had landed on the ground, carrying animal faeces and rubbish, the military said. 'Low-grade behaviour' On Saturday, South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik called North Korea's move "unimaginably petty and low-grade behaviour." Meanwhile, Colonel Lee Sung-Jun, the public affairs director of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned Pyongyang to halt this activity. "Full responsibility for issues that occurred by North Korea's filth balloons against the South lies entirely with North Korea, and we once again gravely warn North Korea to immediately halt their inhuman, low-level, and nasty activity which violates the armistice agreement," Colonel Lee said. North Korea has escalated its provocative actions against South Korea. The nation, as per local media reports on Wednesday (May 29), sent balloons filled with trash, toilet paper, and suspected human&nbsp;and animal faeces into South Korea.

Seoul's military has&nbsp;slammed the "low class" move, which follows a warning from Pyongyang that it would shower South Korean border areas with "mounds of wastepaper and filth" as punishment.

<h2>North Korean propaganda&nbsp;</h2>

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed the presence of "unidentified objects believed to be North Korean propaganda leaflets"&nbsp;in the Gyeonggi-Gangwon border area&nbsp;and stated that the military was taking necessary action.&nbsp;

They urged citizens to avoid outdoor activities, avoid contact with unknown objects, and report any findings to military bases or the police.

Condemning the North's actions as a violation&nbsp;of international laws and a serious threat to public safety, the South Korean military said that some balloons contained suspected trash.&nbsp;

"We sternly warn the North to immediately stop its inhumane and low-class actions," the statement added.

Gyeonggi province sent a text message alert to residents on Tuesday night, advising them to "refrain from outdoor activities and report (objects from North Korea) to military bases when identified."

<h2>Which South Korean action invited this retaliation?</h2>

This escalation follows frequent instances of South Korean activists launching balloons carrying anti-regime propaganda leaflets and money across the border into North Korea. These campaigns have long infuriated Pyongyang, which possibly fears that outside information could destabilise the tightly controlled society and threaten the Kim Jong Un regime.

In retaliation, North Korea recently threatened to take similar action. Kim Kang Il, a vice-minister of defence, on Sunday (May 26) said that "Tit-for-tat action will be taken against frequent scattering of leaflets and other rubbish by the ROK near border areas." Here, ROK refers to the Republic of Korea, the South's official name.

"Mounds of wastepaper and filth will soon be scattered over the border areas and the interior of the ROK and it will directly experience how much effort is required to remove them," Kim&nbsp;reiterated in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

"North Korea would scatter waste over South Korea's border areas in response to the propaganda leaflets."

"This is a stern message to South Korea that North Korea can retaliate with similar propaganda tactics and that the South should cease its activities immediately," Cheong Seong-chang of the Sejong Institute told AFP.

Even though the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, the two Koreas remain technically at war, separated by a heavily fortified border.

North Korea launched an "unidentified projectile", said South Korea's army on Monday (May 27).&nbsp;

The move came hours after Pyongyang informed Japan of its plan to fire another "spy satellite".

"North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile southwards," over the Yellow Sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, after Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo wrapped up their first trilateral summit since 2019.

Following this, Japan also issued an evacuation order to southern Okinawa prefecture, confirming the launch.

"Missile launch. Missile launch. It appears a missile(s) was launched from North Korea. Please evacuate inside buildings or underground. Information was received at 22:46 (1346 GMT). Target region: Okinawa."

The Japanese government's alert was lifted at 23:03 (1403 GMT), adding that the missile(s) appeared not to fly to Japan".

<h2>Satellite launch failed</h2>

Hours later, Pyongyang said that its fresh attempt to place a spy satellite into orbit on Monday had failed after it burst into flames mid-air.

Further elucidating the issue behind the failed attempt, North Korea said that due to a suspected engine problem, the satellite exploded during the first-stage flight.

The launch of the Malligyong-1-1 reconnaissance satellite "exploded in the air during the first flight and failed to launch," the country's National Aerospace Technology Administration said in a statement carried by state media, adding the "cause of the accident was the reliability of the newly developed liquid oxygen and kerosene engine."

<h2>'Fragments of missile found in ocean,' say Seoul</h2>

Pyongyang's statement came after the South Korean military said that it had detected several "fragments" in the ocean after Pyongyang's spy satellite launch which it said indicated that the launch may have failed.

The army said that South Korean and US intelligence agencies were investigating whether the launch had failed.

Around two minutes after it detected "what's suspected to be the North's military reconnaissance satellite... many fragments of the projectile were detected around 22:46 (1346 GMT) in North Korea waters and the US and South Korea are analysing whether it had an operational flight," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

A senior Japanese defence ministry official told reporters that "the missile did not fly into the area that had been announced, and the situation is not as North Korea had intended. We are still analysing whether it is a satellite or not," Japan's Kyodo news agency reported.
