According to a report by The Guardian on Saturday (July 1), over 41,000 nurses were among those who left their jobs in NHS hospitals and community health services, with the highest leaving rate for at least a decade.</p>

<p>The number of staffers quitting overall rose by more than a quarter in 2022, compared to 2019, the report said citing The Observer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to the publication, Sir Julian Hartley, chief executive of NHS Providers, said, "Staff did brilliant work during the pandemic, but there has been no respite. The data on people leaving is worrying and we need to see it reversed."</p>

<p>“We need to focus on staff wellbeing and continued professional development, showing the employers really do care about their frontline teams,” Sir Hartley added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Guardian report said that in the year leading up to December 31, 2022, nearly 170,000 staff&nbsp;left NHS service in hospitals, community health services, and other core health organisations, compared to 149,678 the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per experts, 2022 might have been a peak year for exits from the NHS&nbsp;because of those who may have deferred retirement because of the Covid pandemic. However, there has been a rise in the number of employees&nbsp;citing work-life balance as the reason for quitting.</p>

<p>Junior doctors in England are planning to stage a five-day strike in July, a union representing them said on Friday (June 23). This is said to be the "longest single period of industrial action" in the history of the state-run National Health Service (NHS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The British Medical Association (BMA) said in a statement that the walkouts will take place between 7:00 am (local time) on July 13 and 7:00 am (local time) on July 18.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We won’t give up until junior doctors are fairly paid," a tweet shared from the handle of Junior Doctors read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The strike will result in more senior doctors filling in for the work done by junior doctors. They will prioritise emergency and critical care, which would impact thousands of appointments and pre-planned operations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is not the first time that the&nbsp;junior doctors are on strike. They also stopped work for&nbsp;three days earlier this month.&nbsp;Further, they also staged a four-day walkout in April and a three-day strike in March.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The dispute is over NHS pay and BMA has asked for "full restoration" of pay, which it says has been cut by 26 per cent. To mitigate the crisis, the government has offered a five per cent hike&nbsp;to end the dispute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Local reports have mentioned that the pay has decreased by more than a quarter since 2008, a period of time when inflation is taken into account. According to the BMA, many doctors are exhausted because of an increasing workload.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, the co-chairs of the BMA junior doctors committee, issued a statement on Friday, which read: "We are announcing the longest single walkout by doctors in the NHS's history – but this is not a record that needs to go into the history books. Even now the government can avert our action by coming to the table with a credible offer on pay restoration."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The NHS is one of this country's proudest achievements and it is shameful that we have a government seemingly content to let it decline to the point of collapse with decades of real-term pay cuts to doctors driving them away," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With the 75th birthday of the NHS just days away, neglect of its workforce has left us with 7.4 million people on waiting lists for surgery and procedures, 8,500 unfilled doctors’ posts in hospitals, and doctors who can barely walk down the road without a foreign government tempting them to leave an NHS where they are paid £14 ($17.80) an hour for a country which will pay them properly," it said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It has been almost a week since the last round of strikes finished but not once have we heard from Rishi Sunak or Steve Barclay in terms of reopening negotiations since their collapse of our talks and cancelling all scheduled meetings a month ago. What better indication of how committed they are to ending this dispute could we have?" the statement further mentioned.</p>

<h2><strong>What did the researchers find?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the UK-based newspaper report, the new treatment which tested the drug avutometinib alone and in combination with defactinib in 29 patients said that the latter helped block tumour growth and managed to keep the disease away for years. The combination drug worked for 45 per cent of the patients who saw their tumours shrink significantly, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was also found to be nearly two times more effective than the next best treatment for ovarian cancer, trametinib, whose response rate to the disease was 26 per cent. Meanwhile, all patients who were a part of this trial had low-grade serous ovarian cancer, which is said to typically affect younger women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At least 60 per cent of women with a particular mutation, KRAS-driven ovarian tumours, witnessed a better outcome of the drug combination. However, it also showed promising results for those without the mutation and worked for 29 per cent of patients, said the media report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the drugs avutometinib is a dual RAF and MEK inhibitor which is said to block both and help control cancer growth and survival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, previous studies have shown that it can become ineffective over time as tumours develop resistance to treatment, but when combined with defactinib, which stops the protein, it encourages drug resistance. Therefore, defactinib makes avutometinib more than four times effective than when the latter was used alone.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>'Significant breakthrough': Global lead investigator of the study&nbsp;about the finding</strong></h2>

<p>The global lead investigator of the study, Dr Susana Banerjee, said that the findings could represent a “significant breakthrough,” as per The Guardian. She added, “These initial results could be fantastic news for women with low-grade serous ovarian cancer, indicating a far more effective option than current treatments.”&nbsp;<br />

Dr Banerjee who is also a consultant medical oncologist at the Royal Marsden and team leader in women’s cancers at the London-based Institute of Cancer Research, said&nbsp;that it is wonderful to see so many patients have such a “meaningful response” to the “innovative” drug trial, “I’m so grateful to all who joined the trial, making this research possible,” as quoted by The Guardian. &nbsp;<br />

<p>“The doctor said that she had got it from friends, or from people in her choir or parents at my children’s school. That left my sister and I wondering if some of our close friends had betrayed us as we knew that only a few people knew those details. She had an unhealthy interest in us,” the woman was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>“This is an utterly appalling case. It’s an individual problem that the doctor did this. But it’s a systemic problem that they could do it, and that flaws in the way the NHS’s data management systems work meant that any doctor can do something like this to any patient," said Sam Smith, from MecConfidential, a health data privacy group.</p>

<p>The doctor then accessed records from a different system and got information about a tragedy and its health impact on one of her children.</p>

<p>Dr Nicola Byrne, the NHS national data guardian for England, termed the doctor's behaviour “absolutely unacceptable”. She added that she was "concerned at the seriousness of the allegations".</p>

<p>The leading Indian-origin medic in the United Kingdom, Professor Meghana Pandit has been appointed as the first female Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The appointment will take effect from March 1, said the OUH, in a statement. Pandit also becomes the trust’s first person of colour to be appointed CEO of any National Health Service (NHS) trust in the Shelford Group. Notably, the trust represents some of the biggest teaching hospitals in the country.</p>

<p>The Indian-origin medic was also serving as the interim CEO at the OUH since July last year, and has been appointed following “a rigorous and competitive process which concluded after an extensive national and international recruitment search,” said the one of UK’s largest teaching hospitals in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that the members of the interview panel “unanimously agreed” that Pandit was the preferred candidate for the position and the recommendation was approved at a meeting of the Council of Governors on Wednesday. Notably, she has trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Oxford Deanery and was visiting lecturer of Urogynaecology at the University of Michigan in the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Previously, she has also served as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) within the NHS trusts and is also an Honorary Professor at Warwick University, reported PTI. Furthermore, Pandit is also an Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is a privilege to be asked to lead OUH on a permanent basis and I look forward to continue working with colleagues at OUH, our partners in the health and social care system in Oxfordshire and across the BOB Integrated Care System, our partner Universities, and Oxford Hospitals Charity, to ensure the highest quality of research and innovation enabled care for our patients and populations,” said the newly-appointed CEO of the OUH. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, despite four previous strike days, Sunak is yet to establish any 'direct contact' with RCN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a cry out to Rishi Sunak to come to the table to seek a resolution. So far we've not had direct contact with him, all of our efforts have been through the secretary of state for health," Marquis was quoted as saying by Sky.</p>

<p>"So really, now, we don't want the strikes to go ahead...and we're really calling on the prime minister to intervene, to come to the table and seek a resolution with us."</p>

<p>It will be the first time since December that ambulance crews and nurses will simultaneously take industrial action after the movement got off the ground in December last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the workers, under the trade union laws, emergency cover will be provided. However, the citizens are requested to avail 'emergency' services, only in cases of acute distress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The National Health Service (NHS) has started a clinical trial of a pioneering treatment technique which is aimed at extending the lives of people with brain tumours. A report by The Guardian on Thursday (February 2) said that a team including radiologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and physicists are using detailed MRI scans and highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery to reduce the likelihood of tumours growing back quickly, thereby helping patients to live longer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At present, patients with brain tumours across the globe undergo surgery first, then radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. Brain tumours are very difficult to treat. The Guardian report said that treatment options have not improved significantly in decades and despite extensive research, the standard procedure (surgery first, then radiotherapy and then chemotherapy) has never been challenged.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the team behind this clinical trial – codenamed POBIG (Pre-Operative Brain Irradiation in Glioblastoma) – at the Christie NHS foundation trust in Manchester, is planning to overturn the standard medical procedure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Gerben Brost, a radiation oncologist at the Christie and a senior lecturer at the University of Manchester, who is leading the team, said that the study is a significant milestone in brain cancer research and the culmination of 10 years of work for him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The order of radiotherapy and surgery should be challenged, and this could be the breakthrough we have been working towards for decades,” Dr Brost said. The trial is currently at an early stage but Dr Brost said the results so far had been “very encouraging”.</p>

<p>But he pointed out that surgery would always be essential. “Remnant tumour cells remain growing, potentially even more aggressively post-surgery in the recovery period, before the patient is given the standard course of radiotherapy,” he said, adding that better strategies are desperately needed to target all tumour cells at an earlier stage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As a tumour is likely to respond better to radiotherapy before the operation, we hope, by giving highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery, to stop the tumour from growing back so quickly to improve outcomes and extend lives,” the team leader also said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Patients who are part of the trial undergo an MRI which helps the surgeons estimate where remnant cells are most likely to be left after they operate. The report said that a single dose of radiation is aimed precisely at that area, and patients then have surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.</p>

<p>Joel Rush, a director of a digital marketing agency he co-founded with his wife, is one of the first patients in the trial. Rush was diagnosed with glioblastoma after experiencing severe headaches and pain in October last year. “The doctors explained the reasons for using radiotherapy before surgery – made absolute sense – so I was very happy to participate in the trial,” he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Brost, meanwhile, said that the team was pleased with how Joel Rush responded to the treatment and the results so far are encouraging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The head of the Food Standards Agency of UK, Professor Susan Jebb, has suggested that people should not bring cake into the office for the sake of their colleagues’ health. She has also expressed her concern that the advertising of junk food is “undermining people’s free will”. Professor Jebb believes while it is a choice to eat sweet treats, people can help each other by providing a “supportive environment.” She gives the example of how if nobody brought cakes into the office, she would not eat cakes during the day, but because people do bring cakes in, she eats them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Professor Jebb believes that this is similar to the situation with passive smoking, where one will have to inhale smoke if somebody is smoking next to them. She believes that people still don't feel the same way about food. She says people will be tempted into eating cakes if a person sitting next to them will continue bringing them into the office.</p>

<p>She also insists that restrictions on advertising junk food are “not about the nanny state” but would instead tackle what she described as a “complete market failure” where sweet goods take precedence over vegetables. She states that businesses with the most money have the biggest influence on people's behaviour, which is not fair.</p>

<p>Successive governments in UK have failed to introduce a long-promised ban on pre-watershed TV advertising for junk food, with Rishi Sunak’s new administration announcing in December that the anti-obesity measure will not come into force until 2025. The Department of Health blamed the high cost of living for the delay in rolling out restrictions on blatant TV ads promoting junk food.</p>

<p>The development comes after it was revealed that a majority of adults in England are overweight. The NHS website says that people fall prey to obesity and tooth decay due to regular consumption of packed food and drinks high in sugar. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

The head of the Food Standards Agency of UK, Professor Susan Jebb, has suggested that people should not bring cake into the office for the sake of their colleagues’ health.

The head of the Food Standards Agency of UK, Professor Susan Jebb, has suggested that people should not bring cake into the office for the sake of their colleagues’ health. She has also expressed her concern that the advertising of junk food is “undermining people’s free will”. Professor Jebb believes while it is a choice to eat sweet treats, people can help each other by providing a “supportive environment.” She gives the example of how if nobody brought cakes into the office, she would not eat cakes during the day, but because people do bring cakes in, she eats them. Professor Jebb believes that this is similar to the situation with passive smoking, where one will have to inhale smoke if somebody is smoking next to them. She believes that people still don't feel the same way about food. She says people will be tempted into eating cakes if a person sitting next to them will continue bringing them into the office. She also insists that restrictions on advertising junk food are “not about the nanny state” but would instead tackle what she described as a “complete market failure” where sweet goods take precedence over vegetables. She states that businesses with the most money have the biggest influence on people's behaviour, which is not fair. The Department of Health blamed the high cost of living for the delay in rolling out restrictions on blatant TV ads promoting junk food. The development comes after it was revealed that a majority of adults in England are overweight.
