Thousands of native Australia lizards with a market value of around $805,000 (or A$1.2 million) have been rescued from being smuggled out of the country to Hong Kong. In a statement, the New South Wales (NSW) Police said that the criminal syndicate allegedly planning to export the reptiles to Hong Kong has been "dismantled".

Three men and women have been arrested in Sydney. All four suspects have now been charged with multiple offences, including exporting native reptiles, dealing with the proceeds of crime and participating in a criminal group. If found guilty, they face up to 15 years in prison.&nbsp;

Two men, as per the Guardian, were refused bail.

Previously, in September 2023, the police had set up a taskforce called Strike Force Whyaratta to investigate alleged smugglers after 59 live lizards were intercepted on their way to Hong Kong. They were being kept in nine small containers.

With assistance from state and federal departments, the strike force between December&nbsp;20 and January 5 executed search warrants and vehicle intercepts in Sydney's Pendle Hill, Panania and East Hills. There, they arrested the woman aged 41 and three men, aged 31, 54 and 59.&nbsp;

During one of their searches in East Hills, officers came across 118 lizards, three snakes, eight eggs. Alongside them, 25 dead lizards were also found.

According to the police, the group were catching live native animals and selling them for a profit to Hong Kong. On average, one lizard sells for AUD$5,000 (or around US$3,350) on the black market. This means that the total haul had the value of around AUD$1.2 million (or around USD$870,000).

New York on Thursday (Jan 4th) sued 17 bus companies for violating state law by transporting migrants from the southern US border to the city. The city is seeking $708 million via the lawsuit which has been filed in New York state court in Manhattan.

Reportedly, the companies have transported more than 33,000 migrants to New York City from Texas, as part of Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott's campaign to expel illegal migrants who cross into the US via the Mexico border.&nbsp;

<h2>A $708 million compensation</h2>

The city, as per Reuters, has accused the bus charters of violating a 19th century law that required anyone transporting "needy" people to New York to cover their expenses.

"Since the spring of 2022, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has admitted to facilitating the transport of more than 33,600 migrants to New York City without having the companies transporting those migrants pay for the cost of continued care in violation of New York's Social Services Law," said the city.

One of wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim's properties in Maharashtra was sold for Rs 2 crore (USD 240,580) in an auction on January 5. The base price of the gangster's land parcel was pegged at just Rs 15,000 (USD 185.7).

Dawood Ibrahim's Maharashtra properties, where the absconding mafia don and global terrorist reportedly spent his childhood, were up for auction&nbsp;as per an order from central government in India. Two of the land parcels on auction received no bids.

Lawyer Ajay Srivastava, a former Shiv Sena leader, purchased the land plot that fetched the amount of Rs 2 crore (USD 240,580). He claimed that he bought the plot of the dreaded gangster because survey number of the plot and the amount added up to a number which favours him according to numerology. He told the media that he wants to start a&nbsp;Sanatana Pathshala (religious school) on the plots.

At least four plots of land, that are said to be 'benami' farm lands, were&nbsp;up for sale in Ibrahim's native place: Mumbake village in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district.

The auction, as per a Ministry of Finance notice from November, was&nbsp;carried out by the competent authority and administrator of the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act (SAFEMA), under the Union Ministry of Finance.

Donald Trump, the former US president, on Wednesday (Jan 3rd) appealed to the country's highest court to lift a Colorado state ban that would keep him off the presidential primary ballot in the western US state.

This overture to the US Supreme Court comes just a day after the Republican candidate filed an appeal with the Maine Superior Court against a similar decision.

<h2>Toss out the ban</h2>

In a 43-page filing, attorneys for Trump asked the conservative-dominated US Supreme Court to "summarily reverse the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling."

They claim that if the ruling is allowed to stand, it "will mark the first time in the history of the United States that the judiciary has prevented voters from casting ballots for the leading major-party presidential candidate."

The appeal further states that "The question of eligibility to serve as President of the United States is properly reserved for Congress, not the state courts, to consider and decide."

Previously, on Tuesday (Jan 2nd) Trump urged the Maine Superior Court to toss out a similar ban by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows.&nbsp;In her decision, Bellows said that the January 6 Capitol attack "occurred at the behest of, and with the knowledge and support of, the outgoing president," as quoted by AFP.

Calling Bellows, a Democrat, a "biased decision maker," he alleged that she "acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner."

<h2>Two strikes against Trump</h2>

Last week, Maine became the second US state to bar Trump from appearing on the presidential primary ballot over his role in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol by his supporters. Before that, on December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is ineligible to appear on the presidential primary ballot.

The western state had invoked the 14th Amendment's "insurrection clause" which the state's supreme court said was violated by Donald Trump.

Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution bars anyone from holding public office if they engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" after once pledging to support and defend the Constitution.

Trump also faces similar 14th Amendment challenges questioning his&nbsp;eligibility in other US states. Recently, California, Minnesota, and Michigan ruled that the Republican leader should stay on their ballots.

<h2>Four Minnesota GOP candidates endorse Trump for US President</h2>

On Wednesday (Jan 3) Representative Tom Emmer, a Republican, currently serving as US House Majority Whip, endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential race.&nbsp;

In a statement, he said that the endorsement was in part because Trump is the Republican party's "clear frontrunner".

"Democrats have made clear they will use every tool in their arsenal to try and keep Joe Biden and his failed policies in power. We cannot let them," said Emmer.

"It's time for Republicans to unite behind our party's clear frontrunner, which is why I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President," he added.

As per CBS News, Emmer was joined by three other Republican Party members of Minnesota's congressional delegation: Representatives Brad Finstad, Michelle Fischbach and Pete Stauber, who said that Trump "has what it takes to get our country back on track".

Sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's associates have become public knowledge. On Wednesday (Jan&nbsp;3rd), a&nbsp;New York judge began to unseal the identities of people linked in court documents to&nbsp;the US financier,&nbsp;who had committed suicide a couple of years back.

This comes as last month (on Dec 18), Manhattan federal court judge Loretta Preska ordered the New York Court to "unseal in full" the names of around 180 people associated with Epstein.

Here's everything you need to know about financier Epstein and the controversy that surrounds him...even after his death.

<h2>Unsealing names</h2>

Judge Preska's order is part of a defamation proceeding between Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend, and known accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, and plaintiff Virginia Giuffre, who had sued the duo in 2015.

The names of more than 150 associates mentioned&nbsp;in the lawsuit, many of them appearing under the pseudonym "John Doe" or "Jane Doe", are now being released, after their identities remained a secret from the public for so long. The rest of the names will be kept sealed&nbsp;as the individuals objected to them becoming public knowledge.

The unsealing, as per AFP, includes names of Epstein's associates, suspected accomplices and his victims.

In December, noting that many of the names are already public due to interviews and other media coverage, the judge, as per CNS News, said that the substance in question was not salacious and should not be kept sealed.

However, given that some "J.Does" are minors and possible victims of the paramours, the Judge said their information would remain sealed.

Among Epstein's known associates are the Duke of York Prince Andrews, former US presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.&nbsp;

According to the ruling, the names were to be made public on January 1, 2024, individuals were given 14 days to appeal against the revelation of their names.&nbsp;

Court documents explicitly allowed "impacted Doe the opportunity to appeal."&nbsp;

<h2>The crimes of Jeffrey Epstein</h2>

Jeffrey Epstein was a financier with a powerful network in the United States and abroad. He has been accused of sexually assaulting minor girls and running a sex trafficking network with his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.

In the 1990s, the duo reportedly exploited a large number of girls — some of them as young as 14 years, grooming them into having sex with wealthy clients.&nbsp;

The allegations of sexual battery against Jeffrey Epstein started in 2015, when a woman contacted Florida's Palm Beach Police Department, alleging that her 14-year-old stepdaughter had been taken to Epstein's manor by an older girl. She alleged that the teenager was paid $300 to undress.

Following this, the Palm Beach Police began a thirteen-month undercover investigation of Epstein. This included a search of his home, which uncovered a large amount of pictures of young girls, along with two hidden cameras.&nbsp;

Soon, the FBI became involved, launching its own investigation nicknamed "Operation Leap Year". In June 2007, the federal agency submitted a 53-page indictment against him. Subsequently, Epstein agreed to plead guilty in Florida, registering as a sex offender.

In 2008, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to a state charge of procuring for prostitution a girl below age 18.

On July 6, 2019, he was arrested on sex trafficking charges by the FBI-NYPD Crimes Against Children Task Force. He was jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

A subsequent search of his Manhattan townhouse turned up evidence of sex trafficking, and also found "hundreds – and perhaps thousands – of sexually suggestive photographs of fully – or partially – nude females". On July 8, prosecutors with the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York charged Epstein with sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex.

He sought release on bail, but the request was denied on July 18 by US District Judge Richard M Berman, who said Epstein posed a danger to the public and a serious flight risk to avoid prosecution.&nbsp;

On July 23, 2019, he was found injured in his cell, with marks around his neck. Finally, awaiting trial over charges of one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage females, Epstein committed suicide in jail on August 10, 2019. Soon, Epstein's death became the subject of widespread controversy and debate. Many believe that his death was a homicide.

<h2>Virginia Giuffre v. Epstein and&nbsp;Virginia Giuffre v. Ghislaine Maxwell</h2>

As per British media reports, the defamation claim which dates back around nine years was settled in 2017. In an affidavit, Virginia&nbsp;Giuffre (then known as Virginia Roberts) alleged that at age 17, she was sexually trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell. Giuffre said that she was used by Epstein and others, including Prince Andrews and retired Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz.

She also claimed that the duo and others had sexually abused her and that the FBI may have been part of a cover-up against her.&nbsp;

Apart from this, numerous other cases were filed against him&nbsp;by alleged victims under pseudonyms and other entities.&nbsp;

Sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's associates have become public knowledge. On Wednesday (Jan 3rd), a New York judge began to unseal the identities of people linked in court documents to the US financier, who had committed suicide a couple of years back. This comes as last month (on Dec 18), Manhattan federal court judge Loretta Preska ordered the New York Court to "unseal in full" the names of around 180 people associated with Epstein. Here's everything you need to know about financier Epstein and the controversy that surrounds him...even after his death. Unsealing names Judge Preska's order is part of a defamation proceeding between Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend, and known accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, and plaintiff Virginia Giuffre, who had sued the duo in 2015. The names of more than 150 associates mentioned in the lawsuit, many of them appearing under the pseudonym "John Doe" or "Jane Doe", are now being released, after their identities remained a secret from the public for so long. The rest of the names will be kept sealed as the individuals objected to them becoming public knowledge. Also read | Stephen Hawking visited Epstein's disgraced island but did he engage in 'underage orgy' too? The unsealing, as per AFP, includes names of Epstein's associates, suspected accomplices and his victims. In December, noting that many of the names are already public due to interviews and other media coverage, the judge, as per CNS News, said that the substance in question was not salacious and should not be kept sealed. However, given that some "J.Does" are minors and possible victims of the paramours, the Judge said their information would remain sealed. Among Epstein's known associates are the Duke of York Prince Andrews, former US presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. Also read | 'Bill Clinton likes them young', claimed Epstein, unsealed court files show According to the ruling, the names were to be made public on January 1, 2024, individuals were given 14 days to appeal against the revelation of their names. Court documents explicitly allowed "impacted Doe the opportunity to appeal." The crimes of Jeffrey Epstein Jeffrey Epstein was a financier with a powerful network in the United States and abroad. He has been accused of sexually assaulting minor girls and running a sex trafficking network with his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. In the 1990s, the duo reportedly exploited a large number of girls — some of them as young as 14 years, grooming them into having sex with wealthy clients. The allegations of sexual battery against Jeffrey Epstein started in 2015, when a woman contacted Florida's Palm Beach Police Department, alleging that her 14-year-old stepdaughter had been taken to Epstein's manor by an older girl. She alleged that the teenager was paid $300 to undress. Also read | Prince Andrew's reputation 'highly damaged' after involvement in Jeffrey Epstein case, experts say Following this, the Palm Beach Police began a thirteen-month undercover investigation of Epstein. This included a search of his home, which uncovered a large amount of pictures of young girls, along with two hidden cameras. Soon, the FBI became involved, launching its own investigation nicknamed "Operation Leap Year". In June 2007, the federal agency submitted a 53-page indictment against him. Subsequently, Epstein agreed to plead guilty in Florida, registering as a sex offender. In 2008, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to a state charge of procuring for prostitution a girl below age 18. On July 6, 2019, he was arrested on sex trafficking charges by the FBI-NYPD Crimes Against Children Task Force. He was jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. A subsequent search of his Manhattan townhouse turned up evidence of sex trafficking, and also found "hundreds – and perhaps thousands – of sexually suggestive photographs of fully – or partially – nude females". On July 8, prosecutors with the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York charged Epstein with sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex. He sought release on bail, but the request was denied on July 18 by US District Judge Richard M Berman, who said Epstein posed a danger to the public and a serious flight risk to avoid prosecution. Also read | Ghislaine Maxwell claims Jeffrey Epstein was murdered On July 23, 2019, he was found injured in his cell, with marks around his neck. Finally, awaiting trial over charges of one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage females, Epstein committed suicide in jail on August 10, 2019. Soon, Epstein's death became the subject of widespread controversy and debate. Many believe that his death was a homicide. Virginia Giuffre v. Epstein and Virginia Giuffre v. Ghislaine Maxwell As per British media reports, the defamation claim which dates back around nine years was settled in 2017. In an affidavit, Virginia Giuffre (then known as Virginia Roberts) alleged that at age 17, she was sexually trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell. Giuffre said that she was used by Epstein and others, including Prince Andrews and retired Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz. Also read | Who's Who in the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandal She also claimed that the duo and others had sexually abused her and that the FBI may have been part of a cover-up against her. Apart from this, numerous other cases were filed against him by alleged victims under pseudonyms and other entities. United Nations experts have urgently implored the United States authorities to reconsider the scheduled execution of Kenneth Smith in Alabama on January 25. The unsettling twist in this case is the proposed method: asphyxiation using pure nitrogen, an untested and unprecedented approach that has never been used anywhere in the world.&nbsp;

In a plea for compassion and justice, experts have cautioned that the execution method may subject Smith to "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or even torture."

<h2>Who is Kenneth Smith?&nbsp;</h2>

58-year-old Kenneth Smith is a murderer-for-hire who was&nbsp;sentenced to death for a 1988 killing. In his scheduled execution, a face mask connected to a cylinder of nitrogen will be used to cut off his oxygen supply.

Smith found himself in a harrowing situation after Alabama botched his initial execution attempt in November 2022. The lethal injection failed due to multiple futile attempts to establish an intravenous line, leaving him as one of only two individuals in the US to survive an execution attempt.

<h2>Cruel execution</h2>

International experts, including four UN human rights special rapporteurs, argue that subjecting Smith to asphyxiation with an inert gas raises serious concerns about potential "grave suffering" and "a painful and humiliating death".

They say that the execution would likely violate an international treaty that expressly forbids torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading punishment—a treaty to which the United States is a party.&nbsp;

Smith's lawyers also vehemently assert that this untested execution protocol likely infringes upon the US Constitution's prohibition against "cruel and unusual punishments."

They also contend that any subsequent attempt to execute him, by any means, would be unconstitutional.

As the legal battle unfolds, a federal judge in Alabama is weighing Smith's plea for a temporary injunction. It aims to halt the execution and provide space for his lawsuit, challenging the constitutionality of the new protocol to progress.

In the US, executions via lethal injection have been the norm. For this, lethal doses of a barbiturate are used.

However, with a European Union law banning pharmaceutical companies from selling drugs that could potentially be used in executions, some states have struggled to obtain the drugs.

International outcry over US plans to use 'inhuman' nitrogen asphyxiation to execute death row inmate

Donald Trump is off the presidential primary ballot in two of the US states—Maine and Colorado, due to the role he played in the unfolding of the&nbsp;Capitol riots, which has been etched in American history as a 'dark day'. However, a new poll found that a majority of Americans, mainly Republicans, remain sympathetic to Trump and his supporters who on January 6, 2021, stormed the Capitol Hill.&nbsp;

They are also slightly less likely to view President Joe Biden's election win as legitimate, it emerged according to a poll.

<h2>Public's 'not guilty' verdict for Trump</h2>

Even as Trump faces multiple bans over the Capitol riot, a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll has found that Republicans in the US are more sympathetic to his supporters who stormed the government office.

The poll found that Republicans are now less likely to believe that Jan 6 rioters were "mostly violent."

Furthermore, they are also less likely to believe Trump bears responsibility for the attack. As per a Washington Post report, respondents during follow-up interviews revealed that they now believe that the "riot was instigated by law enforcement to suppress political dissent."

This, as per the report, is a "baseless conspiracy theory" that Trump himself has made mention of in his speeches. Furthermore, it has also been promoted by right-wing media.

However, Democrats still, for a large part, continue to believe that the Riot was "a violent threat to democracy for which Trump bears responsibility."

Only 55 per cent of the poll participants said that the Jan 6 riot threatened democracy, others, most of them Republicans, disagree.

More than 7 in 10 Republicans said it was "time to move on".

<h2>Joe's win illegitimate, feel poll respondents</h2>

Even after audits in more than one state and nationally televised congressional hearings that confirmed that there was no evidence of fraud in the 2020 elections Trump lost, an increasing number of Americans question the legitimacy of Biden's win.

This is down from 69 per cent who in another Washington Post-University of Maryland poll from 2021 said the win was legit.&nbsp;

The recent poll conducted from December 14 to 18 found that older Americans were "slightly more" likely to accept the win as legitimate, compared to the younger generation.

Faced with nearly 100 lawsuits related to decades-old sex abuse claims, the Roman Catholic organisation, Franciscan Friars of California, has filed for bankruptcy.

In a statement, the California-based organisation devoted to helping the poor said it was driven to bankruptcy by a California state law that has enabled sexual abuse victims to file complaints over decade-old incidents. Previously, such complaints were time-barred under the state's statute of limitations, reports Reuters.

<h2>Sexual abuse lawsuits against the organisation</h2>

The Franciscan Friars of California faces 94 lawsuits, most of which have been filed in the western US state of California.&nbsp;

All these lawsuits, as per the group, are based on abuse that allegedly dates back at least 27 years. "I am deeply saddened by the sinful acts committed, and the damage caused to abuse survivors — then only children — who put their trust in friars," said Provincial minister Father David Gaa in a statement.

As per Gaa, even if "no apology or any amount of financial compensation can reverse the harm," the bankruptcy would allow the organisation to fairly compensate survivors of abuse.

<h2>Surprising survey findings</h2>

A nationwide survey by INSIGHT UK, an organisation that "aims to address the concerns of the British&nbsp;Hindu and British Indian (BHI) communities," has revealed shocking data. Conducted between November 2022 and February 2023, it had 2,061 respondents.

Former US president Donald Trump on Tuesday filed an appeal against a ruling that would keep him off the presidential primary ballot in Maine.

Calling Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows a "biased decision maker", Trump's attorneys asked the Maine Superior Court to toss out the ruling. They alleged that the top election official, a Democrat, "acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner."

Americans favour Trump, finds poll Even as Trump faces multiple bans over the Capitol riot, a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll has found that Republicans in the US are more sympathetic to his supporters who stormed the government office. The poll found that Republicans are now less likely to believe that Jan 6 rioters were "mostly violent." Furthermore, they are also less likely to believe Trump bears responsibility for the attack. They are also slightly less likely to view President Joe Biden's election win as legitimate — more than one-third or 36 per cent of Americans, do not accept his victory as legitimate. The skeletal remains of five members of the same family have been recovered from inside a house in the Chitradurga district of the south Indian state of Karnataka. What makes the development more shocking is that the family was last seen five years ago in July 2019.&nbsp;

The police learnt about the incident on Thursday (Dec 28) through local media, who were informed by a person in the locality. Over two months ago, locals had noticed that the main door was broken and that there had been repeated attempts of ransacking the place. However, the police were not notified until this week.&nbsp;

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found four skeletons, two on beds and two on the floor, in one of the rooms. The fifth skeleton was discovered in the other room.&nbsp;

Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team from Devengere and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) were quickly summoned to the scene and collected evidences as to what had transpired in the house.

Donald Trump has escaped being removed from the presidential primary ballot of yet another state. Despite requests for his removal, California's Secretary of State, Dr Shirley Weber, has declined to remove the 2024 Presidential hopeful.

On Thursday (Dec 28), Weber's office released a list of certified candidates, which included Trump's name. However, the California Secretary of State has yet to comment on her decision to include Donald Trump in the state ballot.

<h2>A narrow save</h2>

California's decision comes just hours after Maine disqualified the Republican leader from the primary ballot. Before that, Colorado had barred Trump from the ballet, which the Republicans are appealing in the US Supreme Court.&nbsp;

According to CBS News, Webber's decision comes despite an open letter by the state's Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, who asked her to explore "every legal option" to remove Trump from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot.

In response to last week's letter, Webber only said that her decision would be guided by her office's "commitment to and respect for the rule of law."

"Removing a candidate from the ballot under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment is not something my office takes lightly and is not as simple as the requirement that a person be at least 35 years old to be president," she added.

After the two strikes, California's decision comes as a relief for Trump. &nbsp;

<h2>Colorado and Maine's reasoning</h2>

The two states took this step over the ex-president's alleged role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. On that 'dark day,' a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the Washington Capitol building in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, where Joe Biden had defeated the Republican leader.&nbsp;

Announcing its decision, Colorado had invoked the "insurrection clause" which the state's supreme court said was violated by Trump. Following the lead, Maine's Secretary of State Shenna Bellows on Thursday said: "The US Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government, and Section 336 requires me to act in response."

"Given the compressed timeframe, the novel constitutional questions involved, the importance of this case, and impending ballot preparation deadlines, I will suspend the effect of my decision until the Superior Court rules on any appeal, or the time to appeal …has expired," wrote Bellows, a Democrat, in her decision.

As restrictions on visa routes came into force on Monday (Jan 1), the United Kingdom has banned the "unreasonable practice" of overseas students bringing their families to the nation. The decision is set to affect thousands of Indian nationals who represent the largest international student group in the UK.

<h2>A cut in migration</h2>

On Monday, announcing the move, British Home Secretary James Cleverly said the ban would cut migration by tens of thousands.

"This government is delivering on its commitment to the British public to cut migration. We have set out a tough plan to rapidly bring numbers down, control our borders and prevent people from manipulating our immigration system, which will come into force throughout this year," he said.

"Today, a major part of that plan comes into effect, ending the unreasonable practice of overseas students bringing their family members to the UK. This will see migration falling rapidly by the tens of thousands and contribute to our overall strategy to prevent 300,000 people from coming to the UK."

In a post on X, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced,&nbsp;"From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK."

"In 2024, we're already delivering for the British people," said the leader who next year will face general elections that may end or extend his stay at 10 Downing Street. &nbsp;

Another post by the UK Home Office stated, "We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration."

<h2>The ban</h2>

It was introduced in September 2022 by Britain's former home secretary, Suella Braverman.

At the time, in an interview, Braverman said that dependents were "piggybacking" on student visas and "not contributing to growing our economy".

The restriction affects all foreign students, except those enrolling in postgraduate research courses and the ones with government-funded scholarships.&nbsp;

Citing a British High Commission spokesperson, a Times of India report from November 2023 said that Indian nationals "represent the largest international student group in the UK, receiving the largest share of our study visas and 42 per cent of all Graduate Route grants."

As per an SCMP report, revised Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures released last month show that in December 2022 in the UK, net migration ran at a record figure of 745,000. This number stood at a provisional 672,000 in the year to June 2023.

<h2>Experts criticise the ban</h2>

Experts have previously expressed their concern about the tough restrictions.&nbsp;

Naomi Goldshtein, director and solicitor at Fragomen immigration lawyers, as quoted by Inside Higher Ed, said that the full scope of the decision is not known, but that placing such "harsh restrictions" on international students could end in long-term disruption for short-term gain.

"When compared to the ability of students, for example in the US and Canada, to have their spouse and dependent children join them for the duration of their studies, it underscores the fact that many students with families may look to complete their education elsewhere," said Goldshtein.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wrapped up the year with fresh threats of a nuclear attack on Seoul and orders for a military arsenal build-up to prepare for a war that can "break out any time" on the peninsula, state media reported Sunday.

Kim lambasted the United States during a lengthy speech at the end of five days of year-end party meetings that set his country's military, political and economic policy decisions for 2024.

The meeting announced plans for further military development in the coming year, including launching three more spy satellites, building unmanned drones and developing electronic warfare capabilities, as well as strengthening nuclear and missile forces, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

This year, Pyongyang successfully launched a reconnaissance satellite, enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution and test-fired the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal.

Kim accused the United States of posing "various forms of military threat" and ordered his armed forces to maintain the "overwhelming war response capability", according to KCNA's account of the meeting that ended on Saturday.

The meeting concluded that it is a "fait accompli that a war may break out on the Korean peninsula any time due to the enemies' reckless moves for invading the DPRK," KCNA said, using the acronym of the North's official name.

In an effort to deter Pyongyang, Washington deployed a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Korean port city of Busan this month and flew its long-range bombers in drills with Seoul and Tokyo.

The North has described the deployment of Washington's strategic weapons, such as B-52 bombers, in joint drills on the Korean peninsula as "intentional nuclear war provocative moves".

The military "should rapidly respond to any possible nuclear crisis and put continuous spurs to the preparations for a great event to suppress the whole territory of south Korea by mobilising all physical means and forces including nuclear forces in contingency," Kim said.

<h2>'Uncontrollable crisis'</h2>

Kim told the meeting he would no longer seek reconciliation and reunification with South Korea, noting the "uncontrollable crisis" that he said was triggered by Seoul and Washington.

Inter-Korean relations have deteriorated to a low point this year, with Pyongyang's spy satellite launch prompting Seoul to partially suspend a 2018 military agreement aimed at defusing tensions.

Kim said it would be a mistake to regard South Korea "who publicly defined us as the 'principal enemy'... as the partner of reconciliation and reunification", according to KCNA.

Kim also ordered the drawing-up of measures for reorganising departments handling cross-border affairs to "fundamentally change the principle".

Leif Easley, a professor of international relations at Ewha University in Seoul, said the emphasis on North Korea's "significant military capabilities" was likely aimed at hiding its poor economic achievements this year.

"Much of what state-controlled media publishes is recycled propaganda," he said, adding. "Pyongyang's bellicose rhetoric suggests its military moves are not only about deterrence but also domestic politics and international coercion."&nbsp;

Pyongyang declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear power in 2022 and has repeatedly said it will never give up its nuclear weapons programme, which the regime views as essential for its survival.

The United Nations Security Council has adopted many resolutions calling on North Korea to halt its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes since Pyongyang first conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A boss became a honeytrap victim in the western Indian city of Vadodara in Gujarat after his employees lured him into sending his nude photos which were later circulated to his known people, including his wife as well as company HR.&nbsp;

The victim, Samir Gupta (name changed for anonymity purposes) was targeted by Preeti and Anish (names changed), according to the police. Preeti had quit her job as she could not stand Gupta's overbearing attitude.&nbsp;

Together, the duo furnished a plan to honeytrap Gupta and created a fake Instagram account. Pretending to be a woman, the duo established connection with Gupta and soon engaged in sexually explicit conversations.

A boss became a honeytrap victim in the western Indian city of Vadodara in Gujarat after his employees lured him into sending his nude photos which were later circulated to his known people, including his wife as well as company HR. The victim, Samir Gupta (name changed for anonymity purposes) was targeted by Preeti and Anish (names changed), according to the police. Preeti had quit her job as she could not stand Gupta's overbearing attitude. Together, the duo furnished a plan to honeytrap Gupta and created a fake Instagram account. Pretending to be a woman, the duo established connection with Gupta and soon engaged in sexually explicit conversations. India: Overbearing boss honeytrapped by disgruntled employees who leak his nudes

If reports are to be believed, the pro-Iranian terror outfits have once again struck the US military base of&nbsp;Kharab al-Jir in Syria. The attack took place on Friday (Dec 29) afternoon and follows the pattern of an intensified campaign of violence by the Islamist groups that want a spillover in regional tension.&nbsp;

Previously, the&nbsp;Kharab al-Jir base was attacked in October on two consecutive days. At the time, the attacks were claimed by groups either directly controlled by Tehran or sharing the ideology of other groups currently fighting Israel.

The fresh attack&nbsp;comes in the backdrop of&nbsp;the US&nbsp;military carrying out retaliatory strikes in Iraq after three American soldiers were wounded in a drone attack on December 26 by Iran-aligned terrorists.

A US base in Iraq's Erbil that houses American forces came under attack from a one-way drone earlier on Monday (Dec 25), leaving one soldier in critical condition. The retaliatory attacks were carried out at the discretion of US President Joe Biden.&nbsp;

"These strikes are intended to hold accountable those elements directly responsible for attacks on coalition forces in Iraq and Syria and degrade their ability to continue attacks. We will always protect our forces," said&nbsp;General Michael Erik Kurilla, head of US Central Command.

Morning news brief: Trump disqualified in Maine; death of Israeli-American woman, and more

The Polish Army on Friday (Dec 29) claimed that a Russian missile passed through the country's airspace as Moscow launched its biggest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began in February last year.&nbsp;

General Wieslaw Kukula, chief of the general staff of the Polish armed forces confirmed that the missile briefly entered the Polish airspace before getting redirected towards Ukraine.&nbsp;

"Everything indicates that a Russian missile entered Polish airspace. It also left our airspace.&nbsp;We have national and allied radar confirmation,"&nbsp;Kukula told reporters.&nbsp;

Although the missile was in Polish airspace for only three minutes, it was sufficient for the army to&nbsp;raise its defence preparedness. According to&nbsp;armed forces spokesman Jacek Goryszewski, the jets were scrambled in the direction of the missile in response to the violation of the airspace.&nbsp;

"We sent our forces, fighter jets, to intercept it and shoot it down if necessary but the duration and the flight path... made this impossible and allowed the missile to leave Polish territory," said Maciej Klisz, the operational commander of the Polish army.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;Klisz, the Polish air defence systems were put on alert soon after Russia launched a mega drone and missile onslaught on Ukraine, earlier in the day.&nbsp;

After the intrusion,&nbsp;Polish President Andrzej Duda dialled NATO chief Jen Stoltenberg and had a conversation over the incident.&nbsp;

Notably, in November 2022, a&nbsp;Ukrainian air defence missile fell in the Polish village of Przewodow near the border, killing two civilians.

Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday failed in its bid to block a California state law that makes it mandatory for social media companies to publicly disclose how they moderate content on their platforms.

In September, Musk's microblogging platform sued California seeking to undo the content moderation law, however, a judge dismissed the request.

<h2>The law and X's argument against it</h2>

California's content moderation law requires social media companies with a sizeable gross annual revenue to issue semi-annual reports describing their content moderation practices. It also requires them to provide data on the number of objectionable posts moderated and how they were addressed.&nbsp;

However, the social media website argues that the California law infringes upon its free speech rights under the US Constitution's First Amendment and California's state constitution.

<h2>The Judge's ruling</h2>

In the eight-page decision, US District Judge William Shubb dismissed X's request and said: "While the reporting requirement does appear to place a substantial compliance burden on social media companies, it does not appear that the requirement is unjustified or unduly burdensome within the context of First Amendment law."

Shubb, as per Reuters, also held the "terms of service" requirement as integral and said that their presence could be a major deciding factor for users.

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, the highly secretive rocket, blasted into space carrying the US military's clandestine X-37B drone to a research mission.&nbsp;

The eagerly anticipated lift-off happened after weeks of delays. It unfolded at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 8:07 pm Eastern Time (0107 GMT Friday). A real-time live stream of the launch was shared on SpaceX's website.

<h2>Where is the spacecraft headed?</h2>

A veil of secrecy surrounds the uncrewed and autonomously functioning X-37B spacecraft, and it is unknown where exactly it is headed on its seventh mission.

The Pentagon has shared minimal insights into the spacecraft and its latest endeavours. Initially, it was scheduled for launch on December 7.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;its statement, SpaceX only referred to it by the Pentagon's mission code name — USSF-52, and said "Falcon Heavy launched the USSF-52 mission to orbit from Launch Complex 39A."

<h2>What do we know about the heavily secret mission?</h2>

While the Pentagon remains tight-lipped about the specifics, it did disclose that the X-37B's seventh mission involves "multiple cutting-edge experiments."&nbsp;

Last month, the US Department of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office in a statement said: "These tests include operating the reusable spaceplane in new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies, and investigating the radiation effects on materials provided by NASA."

Significantly, this marks the first time the X-37B has hitched a ride on the Falcon Heavy, renowned as one of the most powerful operational rockets, capable of ferrying payloads up to 26,700 kilogrammes (around 58,900 pounds) into the depths of space.

As per AFP, the X-37B US space drone resembles a downsized version of the now-retired manned space shuttles and has dimensions akin to a small bus. With a length of 30 feet (nine meters) and a wingspan of 15 feet (4.57 m), it harnesses solar panels for propulsion. Previous missions of the X-37B have involved conducting tests for NASA, including an exploration of the impact of radiation on seeds and other materials.

The Falcon Heavy's launch comes just two weeks after China deployed its enigmatic robotic space plane, Shenlong on December 14.&nbsp;

According to China's state news agency, Xinhua, "During this period, reusable technology verification and space science experiments will be carried out as planned to provide technical support for the peaceful use of space."

Also read | ISRO’s New Year’s gift: XPoSat will lift-off on January 1, will study black holes As per AFP, the X-37B US space drone resembles a downsized version of the now-retired manned space shuttles and has dimensions akin to a small bus. With a length of 30 feet (nine meters) and a wingspan of 15 feet (4.57 m), it harnesses solar panels for propulsion. Previous missions of the X-37B have involved conducting tests for NASA, including an exploration of the impact of radiation on seeds and other materials. The Falcon Heavy's launch comes just two weeks after China deployed its enigmatic robotic space plane, Shenlong on December 14. According to China's state news agency, Xinhua, "During this period, reusable technology verification and space science experiments will be carried out as planned to provide technical support for the peaceful use of space." Ahead of the January 7&nbsp;elections, Bangladesh's ruling party, the Awami League, has released a comprehensive 108-page election manifesto which reinforces the party's commitment to strengthen ties with India and expand cooperation on various fronts. The manifesto, unveiled by the Sheikh Hasina government, outlines the continuation of policies to "cooperate with India" in areas such as cross-border connectivity, transit, energy partnerships, and equitable water sharing.

The manifesto explicitly states, "the Government will continue bilateral trade and security cooperation with India," reflecting the positive engagement between Bangladesh and India in recent years. Joint projects, including an oil pipeline and India's use of Bangladesh ports, underscore the collaborative efforts between the two nations.

Notably, the document goes beyond regional partnerships, expressing a commitment to open new avenues of cooperation with India, Bhutan, and Nepal for hydropower generation and joint management of common river basins. Key foreign policy achievements, such as "resolving long-standing issues with India through demarcation of land boundaries and exchanging enclaves", are highlighted as cornerstones of the government's successful tenure. It said this has helped in encouraging "continued multilateral cooperation and friendly relations with India". The manifesto recognises the settlement of maritime boundaries with Myanmar and India as significant accomplishments, unlocking immense potential for the blue economy.

In a global context, the Awami League aims to build a "strong friendship" with Russia to expand the energy sector. Regarding ties with China, the manifesto declares Dhaka's willingness to "strengthen relations... in terms of development financing." The party envisions strengthening relations with ASEAN countries and developing better and closer ties with Australia and Pacific nations.

It reaffirms a commitment to "strengthen and diversify development cooperation" with&nbsp;the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, and Canada. The document reiterates the government's "determination" to prevent the presence of militant, international terrorists, and separatist groups within its territory.&nbsp;

Among the manifesto's listed achievements, the ruling party proudly highlights Bangladesh's active participation in ten global peacekeeping missions, deploying over 7000 peacekeepers. The manifesto positions this as a "manifestation of Bangladesh's significant contribution to international peace and security." The document also underscores the publication of the Indo-Pacific framework in April 2023, aimed at "promoting open, peaceful, secure, inclusive, equitable prosperity for all".

Morning news brief: Israel issues advisory to citizens in India, Chennai ammonia leakage, and more

Robots are the future, yet, many warn that the technology is a danger to humans. Lending weight to this warning, in a shocking incident, at Tesla's Giga Texas factory near Austin, a malfunctioning robot reportedly attacked an engineer.

As per a Daily Mail report, the incident occurred on November 10, 2021, in the section of the factory floor where the vehicle chassis is initially assembled.

The incident adds to concerns about workplace safety and the risks associated with automation.&nbsp;

<h2>The injuries</h2>

Witnesses reported that the robot, designed to grab and move freshly cast aluminium car parts, pinned the Tesla engineer, who was programming software for other robots nearby. The engineer suffered injuries to his back and arm, leaving a "trail of blood" on the factory surface.&nbsp;

The incident happened a couple of years back and was disclosed in a 2021 injury report filed by Tesla with the Travis County and federal regulators.

The injury report, submitted to maintain tax breaks in Texas, claimed that the engineer did not require time off work.

A brief entry makes mention of a "laceration, cut, open wound" suffered by an "engineer", and identifies the "cause object" as a "robot".

<h2>Is it all good?</h2>

As per the report, an attorney representing Tesla's Giga Texas contract workers has flagged concerns about under-reported injuries at the factory.&nbsp;

In an interview with Daily Mail, attorney Hannah Alexander stated that Tesla's reports to the authorities did not accurately reflect instances of injuries. Alexander, who works with the non-profit Workers Defense Project, cited her conversation with factory workers as proof.

As&nbsp;per Alexander, the under-reporting stretches to a worker's death on September 28, 2021. However, as per a report from the Travis County medical examiner, the worker, a contractor named Antelmo Ramírez, died of heat stroke. This reportedly happened while the construction worker was helping build Tesla's over 2,000-acre-long Giga Texas factory.

"My advice would be to read that report with a grain of salt," she said.

"We've had multiple workers who were injured," said Alexander, adding, "and one worker who died, whose injuries or death are not in these reports that Tesla is supposed to be accurately completing and submitting to the county in order to get tax incentives."

Tesla is yet to release a statement on the issue.

<h2>Tesla's sub-par safety standards</h2>

Last year, the Workers Defense Project filed a complaint on behalf of workers at Giga Texas&nbsp;with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It alleged that Tesla's contractors and subcontractors gave some hires false safety certificates.

Previously, state regulators and investigative journalism non-profits have also voiced similar concerns about Tesla under-reporting cases.

An earlier report by the Center for Investigative Reporting's Reveal team found that to evade state regulators, Tesla had misclassified a number of on-the-job accidents and injuries as 'personal medical' cases.

Another report by California OSHA investigators found that, in 2018 alone, the company left out 36 injuries in its mandatory government filing.

For the United Kingdom, this year's Christmas has been the hottest in more than a decade. Authorities have declared Christmas Eve 2023, the warmest one since 1997, with temperatures in some areas hitting 15.3C on Sunday.

<h2>Warmest ever?</h2>

The unlikely Christmas temperatures, as per the UK Meteorological Office (Met Office), were recorded in Heathrow, west London and Chippenham in Slough.

<h2>Toasty Christmas</h2>

As per the report, this unseasonably mild weather could mean that this year, Christmas Day will be the hottest in years.&nbsp;

Talking to the UK's PA news agency, Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said that "the temperatures will peak today."&nbsp;

"There is a slight downward trend in temperatures for Christmas Day, but we're still expecting them to be comfortably above average."

The warmest Christmas on record was in 1920 when in Devon, the temperature reached 15.6C.

<h2>White Christmas: A thing of the past?</h2>

For a Christmas to officially be classified as a "white" Christmas, only one snowflake is needed.

As per the forecasters, a white Christmas is still likely in parts of Northern Scotland — especially on higher ground in areas like Caithness and Sutherland. Most parts of Scotland are expected to see rain showers and relatively warm highs of 8C or 9C.

Three police officers accused of killing Manuel 'Manny' Ellis, an unarmed Black man, were acquitted on Thursday (December 21) in Washington. Disappointed by the jury's decision, chanting "No justice, no peace," on Thursday evening, a crowd of around 100 people, including the victim's family, blocked an intersection near a mural of Manny Ellis in Tacoma.

The killing, which happened back in 2020, bears parallels to the murder of George Floyd the same year;&nbsp;the dying pleas for air by both men sparked widespread protests.

<h2>The 'not-guilty'&nbsp;judgement</h2>

Three Tacoma, Washington, police officers Christopher Burbank, Matthew Collins, and Timothy Rankine were accused of killing Ellis.&nbsp;

However, a jury found Officers Christopher Burbank and Matthew Collins not guilty of murder and manslaughter charges. Officer Timothy Rankine was found not guilty of manslaughter.

The judgement comes after a trial that lasted more than two months.

<h2>What happened back in 2020?</h2>

As per video footage of the incident — including bystander video — on March 3, 2020, the officers punched 33-year-old Manuel Ellis and put him in a chokehold from behind. They also shot him with a stun gun and knelt on his back, which cut off Ellis' air supply.

Witness testimonies and the videos showed that Ellis was walking home after getting doughnuts from a 7-Eleven when he passed a police patrol car at a red light. Inside the car were Collins and Burbank.

The two officers claim they saw Ellis try to force open the door of a passing car, and that he became aggressive upon questioning. Collins, as per AP, also testified that Manuel Ellis demonstrated "superhuman strength" and&nbsp;lifted him off the ground and threw him through the air.&nbsp;

However, three witnesses testified that they saw no such thing and that Ellis didn't do anything to provoke the officers.&nbsp;

They said that after a brief conversation, the two white officers knocked down Ellis, even as he&nbsp;held up his hand in surrender. However, Burbank still shot him in the chest with a taser. A doorbell surveillance camera corroborated this.&nbsp;

Soon, many officers appeared for backup. Among them was Rankine, who arrived after Ellis was already handcuffed face-down. The officer knelt on Ellis' upper back.

Video evidence showed the victim addressing the officers as 'sir' and telling them he can't breathe. During his testimony, Rankine called the death a tragedy, but said: "The only response at that point that I could think of is, 'If you can talk to me, you can still breathe'".

The Pierce County medical examiner ruled Manny Ellis' death a homicide caused by oxygen deprivation. However, lawyers for the officers argued that Ellis, who had methamphetamine in his system, died due to drug use and a heart condition.

<h2>Distressing witness testimony</h2>

One witness, Sara McDowell, 26 told the court: "When I saw Manuel not doing anything, and him get attacked like that, it wasn't right."

"I'd never seen police do anything like that. It was the worst thing I've ever seen. It was scary. It wasn't OK," she added.

However, despite the evidence, the jury gave the not-guilty verdict. AP reported&nbsp;that as the first not-guilty verdict was read, there was a gasp from the gallery.

In a statement, the City of Tacoma said that the verdict would not affect an internal police department investigation. It said that once the investigation findings are approved by Chief Avery Moore, decisions about any possible discipline, "up to and including termination," will be made. This is expected to happen within the next two weeks.
