US online retail giant Amazon has reached a settlement with the European Union and has agreed to make big business changes avoiding a 10 per cent fine.

The European Competition Commission in a news conference said, "The Commission has decided to accept commitments offered by Amazon. These commitments address our preliminary competition concerns about Amazon practices on its e-commerce marketplace."

The retail company faced three charges, Reuters reported.

The second charge dealt with equal treatment of sellers when ranking offers the "buy box" on the website, generating bulk orders.

Amazon agreed to set up a secondary buy box for the rival product if it has a different price and delivery time in comparison to the ones in the first box.

The EU further added that the commitments will stay in force for seven years in the case of the Prime and Buy box policy and five years for other parts.

The United States on Monday halted the scrapping of a key policy that has been in place since the last days of the Donald Trump administration and blocked the entry of migrants at the country's southwest border.

Chief Justice John Roberts placed an emergency stay on Title 42 amid concerns that its removal will cause an influx of undocumented migrants.

The decision comes after a Washington appeals court last week ruled that there was no longer any justification for Title 42.

However, a last-minute petition by 20 mostly Republican states including Texas, Arizona, Missouri, Ohio and Virginia argued that ending the policy would create a gush of migrants mostly from Mexico and Latin Americas.

Citing a prediction by the Department of Homeland Security they said that the number of those seeking asylum could triple to 18,000 every day. The states have asked the court to take on the full case over the law.

The stay will remain in place as a Republican challenge moves forward, and "individuals who attempt to enter the United States unlawfully will continue to be expelled to Mexico."

Conservative lawmakers commended the stay and some even urged that Title 42 be turned into a codified law. The parties have been given 24 hours to respond. This means that Title 42 may end this week as planned or it may remain in place as the Supreme Court reviews the case more broadly.

North Korea has denounced Japan's new security strategy and has vowed action to show just how "wrong" Japan's choice is. The nation also said that international sanctions will not stop its efforts to step up its own security efforts.

Days after Tokyo unveiled its ambitious military buildup that as per Reuters stands to be its biggest since World War two, Pyongyang said that Japan's strategy effectively formalised a "new aggression policy" and stands to fundamentally change the regional security environment.

"Japan is bringing a serious security crisis on the Korean Peninsula and in the East Asia region by adopting a new security strategy that effectively acknowledges its pre-emptive strike capabilities against other countries," said a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson.

"Japan will soon learn with a shudder it has made a clearly wrong and very dangerous choice," warned the North as it denounced the Japanese military buildup as a "serious challenge" to international peace adding that it is in violation of the UN charter.

"We make it clear once again that we have the right to take bold and decisive military measures to protect our fundamental rights ... in response to the complicated regional security environment."

In a separate statement Kim Yo Jong, sister of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un addressed the reports of North developing a spy satellite and said that her country's attempts to develop the equipment were a "pressing priority" with a direct link to Pyongyang's security.

Singh, 94, recalling the event said that as the Pakistani commander agreed to surrender, India's Major General JFR Jacob asked him to arrange the event.

Before being transformed into a church and then a mosque, the temple was originally devoted to the goddess Athena.

According to the official Vatican News website, one of the four horses in Athena's chariot was sown on one of the marble fragments.

Israel's ambassador to India Naor Gilon has said Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's PM-designate, will be visiting India next year once he takes charge. India and Israel are celebrating 30 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties and a prime ministerial visit is something that has been considered. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Gilon said, "we are hoping for the visit of our Prime Minister, PM Netanyahu, who is just going into office soon. Then we will try to work with him. I am sure, he has the wish because of his personal friendship with PM Modi and his high admiration for India".

Netanyahu last visited India in 2018 and since then plans were made for more of his visits but they could not materialise. Both leaders share close personal relationships and PM Modi was quick to congratulate Netanyahu in November after his electoral success. Netanyahu's first foreign visit after taking charge will be to the UAE. UAE and Israel established diplomatic ties after the landmark Abraham Accords.

Pointing to the accords, Ambassador Gilon explained that "the landscape of the Middle East has changed in the last few years and India is part of it". Both countries are working under the I2U2 grouping and hoping to increase trade with the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). India is Israel's third-largest trade partner in Asia and ninth-largest globally. The Israeli Ambassador highlighted, "FTA, we have been working for a long time. When Dr Jaishankar was in Israel, he spoke about the need to go forward fast.... if the PM will be coming, it will be a boosting element into the negotiation of FTA and motivation to start going to signing". From $ 200 million in 1992, bilateral merchandise trade stood at $7.86 billion (excluding defence) during the period 2021 –2022 with the balance of trade being in India’s favour.

Irmgard Furchner, 97, a former secretary who worked as a typist for the commander of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, has been convicted of complicity in the murders of over 10,505 people.

Hired at Stutthof, she is also one of the first women who served a two-year suspended jail term.

Despite being a domestic worker, the typist was found guilty as the court believed she was aware of all the activities, BBC reported.

But Stefan Hordler, a historian played a crucial role. He presented pieces of evidence. It became clear that Furchner was able to see one of the worst conditions at the camp.

Since the conviction of former Nazi death guard John Demjanjuk in 2011, a number of prosecutions have taken place in Germany. He was found to have given sufficient evidence to prove conspiracy.

It is believed that Furchner's case could be the last to take place for Nazi-era crimes.

A day after firing two ballistic missiles, North Korean state agency on Monday confirmed that an 'important, final phase' test for the development of a first-of-its-kind spy satellite that Kim Jong-un wants to be readied by April 2023 was completed. According to KCNA, National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) conducted the satellite test at the Sohae satellite launching station in Cholsan, North Pyongan province. “We confirmed important technical indicators such as camera operating technology in the space environment, data processing and transmission ability of the communication devices, tracking and control accuracy of the ground control system,” said NADA, adding that the launch took from a 'lofted angle to an altitude of 500 kilometres. It termed the results “an important success which has gone through the final gateway process of the launch of reconnaissance satellite.” Two black-and-white, low-resolution images of Seoul and Incheon, the two big cities in South Korea were captured by the satellite. However, experts analysing the photos said they were of extremely low-quality given the military standards. WATCH | BREAKING: South Korea military says North Korea fired unidentified ballistic missile × On Sunday, the South Korean military claimed that Pyongyang had fired an "unidentified ballistic missile" towards the sea off the Korean Peninsula's east coast. "North Korea's ballistic missiles were launched at steep angles and landed in the East Sea," it added. Notably, the South Korean presidential office in a statement said that Seoul convened a National Security Council (NSC) meeting over the missile launch and "strongly condemned" Pyongyang for escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Reports stated that the missile was fueled by a high-thrust solid-fuel engine which will allow the North to facilitate quicker and more mobile launch of such ballistic missiles.
