After the loss of significant numbers of wild birds from Avian flu, scientists have claimed that Earth is experiencing a new "Silent Spring."

The term 'Silent Spring' harks back to Rachel Carson's 1962 book that talks about pesticides, particularly DDT that killed birds. It said that the DDT caused egg shells to become so thin that adult birds killed them during incubation which led to nest failure and the deaths of thousands of birds. &nbsp;

Scientists claimed that a significant number of birds have died past year. &nbsp;The World Organisation for Health estimates claimed that over 50,000 birds died due to Avian flu since October 2021 mostly in Africa and Europe.&nbsp;

COVID Horror: Six pictures show reality of coronavirus outbreak haunting China

Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Russian paramilitary forces are summoning cryptocurrency donations to buy weaponry, armour, and drones warned Australian intelligence agency Austrac. Officials at the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre referred to cryptocurrency as a ‘standard part of money laundering tool kit’.

John Moss, the agency’s head executive and head of intelligence, claimed that cryptocurrency has become mainstream, The Guardian reported. "It is no more a niche option for criminal activity," he said.&nbsp;

As Moss expressed his concern over the donations made by Australians to terrorist groups, he mentioned that conventional money laundering methods have shifted to digital currency. The prime reason behind the switch is to send money offshore.

Australians have sent&nbsp;digital money to organised terror groups like al-Qaeda and ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and The Levant), according to Austrac.&nbsp;"This is organisational support for travel, training, salaries of fighters, and uniforms," mentioned Tink.&nbsp;

Earlier in 2022, UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) shut down all the bitcoin ATMs. However, unlike the UK, Australia has a rapidly growing number of regulated crypto ATMs. Moss raised concerns over their illegal usage and the increase in the number of fraud cases.&nbsp;

The finance agency has regulated crypto-exchange providers for money laundering and counter-terrorism financing objectives. However, Tink claims that the case is not the same everywhere. "It is not difficult to cash out crypto-currencies and fly under the radar in parts of Eastern Europe," said Tink.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the senior official at Austrac believes that the crooks are at high risk due to the money laundering cycle's placement stage. He hailed the sector for the quality of suspicious activities and referred to crypto exchanges in Australia as 'first in the line of defence'.&nbsp;

Mary Hastings, a Californian woman, volunteered to drive Zeppelin home.

The family missed having him around and is delighted to have him back. During the press conference, the family expressed gratitude to Mary for her help.&nbsp;

Before he went missing, Zeppelin fathered a litter of puppies. They were only a few weeks old when he disappeared. O'Neil kept two of them, Angus and Sweet Pea, while she gave away the rest.

United States President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden has hired Abbe Lowell, a top Washington lawyer, ahead of the probe by the House Republicans. Interestingly, Lowell had previously represented Jared Kushner - the former senior advisor and son-in-law of ex-president Donald Trump- during inquiries related to Trump-Moscow links, Russian election obtrusion, and in Congress.&nbsp;

The Department of Justice has initiated an investigation against Hunter Biden over taxes on income. His manner of paying taxes over the last few years opened a case against him, reported NBC.&nbsp;

Abbe Lowell will manage overall legal strategies and coordinate Biden's responses to expected congressional inquiries. Kevin Morris, an attorney from Biden's legal team, mentioned that Abbe represented numerous public administrators and high-powered people in various trials. However, Lowell has denied commenting on the same.

The US state of Arizona has agreed to dismantle the hideous-looking and rusting shipping container wall along the border with Mexico. The decision comes after the US government filed a lawsuit and argued that the makeshift wall was illegally built on federal land.

The US state of Arizona has agreed to dismantle the hideous-looking and rusting shipping container wall along the border with Mexico. The decision comes after the US government filed a lawsuit and argued that the makeshift wall was illegally built on federal land. According to court documents, outgoing Republican Governor Dough Ducey, responsible for erecting the containers, stretching almost seven miles along the border and costing the taxpayers $90 million agreed with the decision on Wednesday. “By 4 January 2023, to the extent feasible and so as not to cause damage to United States’ lands, properties and natural resources, Arizona will remove all previously installed shipping containers and associated equipment, materials, vehicles,” read the agreement. According to Ducey, the containers were placed to stem the flow of migrants crossing into the country. Earlier this year, he said the containers were a temporary fix and that his government was going ahead with its plans to close the gaps in the border. “Our border communities are being used as the entryway to the United States, overwhelming law enforcement, hospitals, nonprofits and residents. It’s our responsibility to protect our citizens and law enforcement from this unprecedented crisis,” added Ducey. WATCH | US-Mexico border faces its worst migrant crisis × However, with Democrat governor-elect Katie Hobbs set to take charge in January, the Biden administration has started making moves. The lawsuit was filed by the justice department on behalf of the Bureau of Reclamation, the department of agriculture and the Forest Services last week. Therein, the federal government requested the removal of containers in the San Rafael valley. “Officials from Reclamation and the Forest Service have notified Arizona that it is trespassing on federal lands. This action also seeks damages for Arizona’s trespasses, to compensate the United States for any actions it needs to take to undo Arizona’s actions and to remediate - to the extent possible - any injuries to the United States’ properties and interests," read the complaint. The influx of aliens to the US, especially from the neighbouring country of Mexico is something which both the Democrats and Republicans have failed to find a concrete solution for. While Republicans under former president Donald Trump were more concerned with building physical borders often echoing the pledge 'Build That Wall', the Biden administration is relatively lenient on migrants, allowing them to seep through the porous borders. Consequently, for the major part of this year, states such as Arizona and Texas sent undocumented migrants to Washington DC and Vice President Kamala Harris's residence via buses to send a message to the White House. After announcing its decision of banning women students from studying at universities, Afghanistan's Taliban-run administration has doubled down on its stance. Nida Mohammad Nadim, Afghanistan's acting higher education minister in his first comments since the announcement of the blanket ban, said women were not adhering to the Taliban's interpretation of the Islamic dress code which prompted the decision. "They didn't observe hijab (Islamic female dress code), they were coming with the clothes that mostly women wear to go to a wedding," said Nadim in an interview. Nadim also refused to accept any international criticism and said the ban order was Afghanistan's internal matter and that foreign nations should stop interfering. Taliban's statement comes on the same day when 50 women dressed in hijabs gathered in the capital city of Kabul for a peaceful protest. However, the Taliban security forces attacked the protest and managed to disperse the demonstrators. WATCH | Afghanistan: Group of women hold protest over ban on university education × According to local news agencies, several women were beaten up and journalists covering the protest were also detained. Read more: Armed guards stop women from entering Afghan universities after Taliban ban on higher education for females US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking at an end-of-the-year news conference, took a gloomy look at the recent developments in Afghanistan. Blinked said the Taliban was sentencing the Afghan women 'to a dark future without opportunity' after announcing the ban. “Taliban have tried to sentence Afghan women to a dark future without opportunities. No country will be able to succeed, much less thrive if half of its population doesn't have the opportunity to contribute," said Blinken. “There are going to be costs if this is not reversed." After Taliban took over Afghanistan by scurrying the US security forces away, it promised to take a softer stance regarding women's education in the country. However, after accumulating good PR, the Taliban resorted to its default setting. The recent ban on university education for women is a gradual escalation by the terror outfit after it set up gender-segregated classrooms and entrances and only allowed women students to be taught by professors of the same sex or old men. Amid uncertainty regarding Elon Musk's position as Twitter's CEO, Sinead McSweeney, the company's global vice president for public policy, quit on Thursday, according to a report by Reuters. After McSweeney's departure, Nick Pickles, senior director for global public policy strategy, has stepped up to fill the role, added the publication. Notably, Sweeney was shut down from Twitter's IT system after failing to respond to Musk's infamous email seeking confirmation if employees were onboard his new 'Twitter 2.0'. Afterwards, she won a temporary injunction that stopped Twitter from officially firing her. She was also reinstated at the job. However, after Sweeney did not receive all the assurances she had sought, she settled with Twitter on Tuesday. Ever since taking over the microblogging platform, Musk has personally overseen the firing of over half the workforce of the company, bringing the headcount to under 2,000 from nearly 7,500. The Twitter boss claimed that his severe cost-cutting measures have helped the company avert a $3 billion shortfall. “That is why I spent the last five weeks cutting costs like crazy," said Musk in Twitter Spaces on Tuesday, before adding, "This company is like, basically, you are in a plane that is headed toward the ground at high speed with the engines on fire and the controls don’t work." In Spain, lawmakers today (December 22) will vote on a groundbreaking transgender rights bill that will allow anyone over 16 years of age to change the gender on their ID card. The legislation as per AFP has sparked divisions within Spain's left-wing government and the country's feminist movement.

The bill which has been touted as the "triumph of reason over hatred" has as per AFP sparked a bitter debate in the country's powerful feminist lobby and LGBTQ equality campaigners.

<h2>What does the bill do?</h2>

It effectively simplifies the procedure for changing a person's gender on their national identity card. People over the age of 16 can request a change based on a simple statement, additionally, children as young as 12 can apply, however, this is only available under certain conditions.

Following the submission of this request, the applicant would then have to confirm once after three months, following which the change becomes valid.

<h2>What are the current rules in this regard?</h2>

Before this only adults were allowed to request the change and that too had to be supported by a medical report attesting to gender dysphoria and proof of at least two years of hormonal treatment.

"Today the feminist majority in this House responds to transphobia," said Equality Minister Irene Montero adding that "At last this law depathologises trans lives and guarantees trans people's rights."

<h2>The division over the bill</h2>

The bill which was first adopted by the Spanish cabinet in June 2021 has sparked tensions between the Podemos party and the Socialists who have unsuccessfully reportedly been trying to modify it.

Additionally, it has split the feminist movement between those who favour Montero and the feminist lobby associated with the Socialists, who vehemently reject the document.

"The state has to provide answers for transgender people," however gender is neither "voluntary nor optional", said Carmen Calvo, who served as Sanchez's former deputy and headed the equality ministry under the Socialists.

She remarked that to her it seems like a step backwards in terms of advancement when gender is asserted above biological sex, she said in a September interview with newspaper El Mundo.

There are also fears that the law will lead to abuse and erosion of women's rights by allowing men who self-identify as women to compete in women's sports and even request transfers to women's prisons.
