Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has challenged the result of the election he lost last month to leftist opponent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, alleging that ballots from some polling machines should be "invalidated."

According to Bolsonaro's alliance, certain electronic voting equipment used in the second-round runoff between Bolsonaro and Lula on October 30 showed "signs of irreparable... malfunction."

They claim that older models of the voting machines showed "signs of serious failures that generate uncertainties and make it impossible to validate the results generated". As a result, they argued that the votes cast by those models should be "invalidated."

Despite allowing his cabinet to start making plans for a presidential transition, Bolsonaro hasn't acknowledged the election loss publically.

Given that the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has confirmed Lula's victory and that it has been accepted by influential Brazilian politicians and foreign allies, Bolsonaro's claim is unlikely to succeed. A bipartisan group of 16 US senators in a letter have asked the joe Biden administration to carefully reconsider giving Ukraine the lethal Gray Eagle drones to fight Russia.

Several senators, including Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Joe Manchin, who are both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have expressed alarm at US opposition to the proposal and stated that providing the armable drone "demands careful reconsideration."

Reuters reports that the group has asked Pentagon to explain why Ukraine's request for the drones has so far been rejected. Ukraine has made multiple appeals for the said drones. Here's all you need to know:

Why are these drones special?

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone as per Reuters has an operational ceiling of 29,000 feet. This capability can go a long way in helping Ukraine in its defence and would "represent a great technological leap" for the country.

Does Ukraine only want these particular drones?

No, as Russia increasingly uses kamikaze drones and targets civilian infrastructure, Ukraine has made several requests for the United States to give it sophisticated drones. Its most recent request was for anti-drone missiles.

Why is the US hesitant to grant Ukraine's request?

While the Pentagon hasn't publicly stated its position, it is believed that the denial was motivated by worries that the drones could intensify the conflict and the belief that they are not necessary for Ukraine's military effort. Additionally, there are concerns that drones might be shot down.

The senators as per a Wall Street Journal report have given Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin until November 30 to respond to their questions. They want to know why the Pentagon considered the drone, produced by General Atomics, was inappropriate for the conflict in Ukraine; whether US worries about technology transfer could be alleviated; and whether the Pentagon feared that launching the drone would further enrage Russia.

'Messed up bring-your-kid-to-work day': Is Kim Jong Un's recently revealed daughter N.Korea's next leader?

France is reportedly planning its biggest-ever military exercise. As per an AFP report, it will involve 12,000 troops, including NATO allies Germany, Britain, Belgium, Italy and Spain, along with the United States and will happen in the first half of next year.

The wargames are called Orion and come against the background of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war. As per a senior French official, they are justified because of the geopolitical context.

"The geopolitical context justifies this exercise," said Yves Metayer, commander of the troop deployment division at the French chiefs of staff.

He added that the scenario plans for a major confrontation with an unspecified foreign state and that the plan had been in development since 2020 and was a culmination of a French strategic review that was released in 2017.

Metayer said that the review indicated that preparation for a major conflict was required, given the two decades of "mostly asymmetrical warfare with non-state actors" like Jihadists.

Orion will include components for the land, sea, air, and space as well as cyber warfare— along with civilian operations such as transportation and medical services during conflicts.

The first phase will act as a simulation of an intervention in a nation that is being torn apart by militia activity and is a neighbour to a nuclear-armed superpower.

NASA prepares for third attempt at launching its mega Moon rocket Artemis 1

The crew of detained Crude Oil tanker MT Heroic Idun are being questioned by Nigerian authorities, while the ship remains anchored in Bonny, in the West African nation. Those in touch with the ship's crew and their families told WION that 16 of the 26 crew members have been taken ashore for questioning, while the remaining ten are on board the vessel. The very large crude carrier and its crew have been detained in West Africa since August this year, which has caused severe agony for the sailors and their families.

Authorities in Nigeria have levelled serious allegations. They claim that in August of this year, the vessel attempted oil theft in Nigerian waters and that it sailed on without an identifying flag, despite orders from the Nigerian Navy. The vessel is said to have eventually sailed towards Equatorial Guinea, where it was detained by the country's authorities.

Manoj Joy from the Sailors Society has been maintaining contact with the ship's Indian crew and providing moral support for their families in India. The former sailor told WION that the allegations made by the Nigerian side are baseless and that it has become common practice for authorities around the world to treat seafarers as a soft target.

According to OSM Group, the ship manager for Heroic Idun, the vessel was ordered to load a cargo of oil in early August from the Akpo terminal in Nigeria. Whilst waiting for the necessary clearance papers after having tendered notice of readiness (being ready to receive cargo) in line with voyage orders received from charterers, the Nigerian navy approached the vessel under cover of darkness in a way that caused serious concerns and it was believed to be an attempted piracy attack. The vessel following ‘Best Management Practice’ escaped from the area and out into international waters.

The company added that the tanker was interdicted in International waters by the Navy of Equatorial Guinea, for allegedly not displaying the flag of that country. "A fine was paid at the end of September against a promise of release of the vessel and its crew. However, both the ship and crew remain in captivity" OSM said.

OSM Group CEO, Finn Amund Norbye said, “The vessel and its 26 multinational crew members have now been detained in Equatorial Guinea for more than 80 days. The seafarers have been treated as criminals, without any formal charges or legal process for close to 3 months, it is nothing short of a shocking maritime injustice.”
MT Heroic Idun is manned by a 26-member crew, which comprises 16 Indians, eight Sri Lankans, one Filipino and a Polish national. The families of the Indian sailors were hopeful that the crew would be released and could return home from Equatorial Guinea. However, the vessel being taken back to Nigeria increases the families' agonising wait. It is feared that the crew might have to face trial in the West African country, which could pose further challenges to their return home. Some crew members are said to have possessed their mobile phones till the bygone weekend and it is believed that those devices have now been confiscated by Nigerian authorities.

Recently, India's Minister of State for External Affairs, V. He added that the Indian Embassy officials in Nigeria, were in constant touch with the Indian crew and that efforts were on to secure the crew, as permitted by International law.

Rolf Thore Roppestad, the CEO of Gard, the ship's insurance firm, said, “the treatment received by the crew shows a blatant disregard for basic human rights and international law. They have been held for more than 80 days, without any charges and without any legal representation locally to protect their interests. The situation is quite frankly outrageous.”

Many of the crew members have suffered from malaria, typhoid fever and other illness requiring hospitalisation, it was added.

Burning, drifting, and being devoured by insects, Canada’s Boreal forest is shrinking and climate change is to blame.

Second only to the South American Amazon forest, the Boreal forest is vital to ensuring the future of planet Earth, reports AFP. The forest which encircles the arctic and stretches across Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and Alaska has in recent times been weakened by forest fires, the melting of permafrost, an insect infestation, warming temperatures and drifting trees.

As per AFP experts have categorically warned that “the forest is encroaching on the tundra, and the prairies are slowly taking the place of the trees.”

With the rising temperatures “drunken trees” have become a common phenomenon; trees are tilted sideways due to the melting permafrost. Eventually, the soil will completely erode and the fauna will tumble down.

Edmonton-based researcher for the natural resources ministry warns "You have the potential for large shifts," adding that some areas might be flooded and even lose forests, which can eventually turn into bogs or swamps, and lakes.

The degradation of permafrost is behind this “buckling and sinking”, ground which for the past two years has remained frozen is thawing.

With it, bacteria are eating away at the biomass collected over thousands of years, generating carbon, and methane emissions which are then contributing to the acceleration of global warming.

Data collected by Global Forest Watch, the World Resources Institute, and the University of Maryland also revealed that extreme heat waves are five times more likely today than 150 years ago.

The higher temperatures have also brought on another problem: insect infestations, which are quickly eating away at the trees.

Fauna, already weakened by the droughts brought on by heatwaves struggle to fend off bugs that exploit the longer summers and warmer winters.

Scientists as per AFP say that for now there’s still hope for the ecosystem's continued resilience, even as they ponder whether the forest’s “tipping point”, a threshold after which emissions will be inevitable and changes to the ecosystem irreversible is approaching.

Eventually, the soil will completely erode and the fauna will tumble down. Edmonton-based researcher for the natural resources ministry warns "You have the potential for large shifts," adding that some areas might be flooded and even lose forests, which can eventually turn into bogs or swamps, and lakes. Also read | Climate change effect: ‘Snow-white' Alps turning green, says study after analysing satellite data The degradation of permafrost is behind this “buckling and sinking”, ground which for the past two years has remained frozen is thawing. Also read | How climate change will impact the world's regions differently The higher temperatures have also brought on another problem: insect infestations, which are quickly eating away at the trees.
