After the ship disappeared, it prompted one of the biggest maritime searches in Australian history. Five of the 26 crewmen survived but the body of only one was ever recovered from the sea while the remaining were lost.&nbsp;

Last month, a high-tech ship owned by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in collaboration with Heritage NSW and The Sydney Project went to investigate a possible wreckage, hoping for it to be MV Noongah.

Notably, locals had spotted the shipwreck years ago in the water off the coast of South West Rocks, about 460 kilometres north of Sydney. However, the lack of technology or diving knowledge needed to identify the wreck stopped the endeavour - that is until the CSIRO ship arrived.

<h2>Flood waters continue to rise</h2>

Notably, while the NSW witnessed clear skies on Saturday, NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned the flood waters were still on the rise.&nbsp;

“The emergency rain situation seems to be easing,” said Minns, adding that it is “important to note that flood levels in some of the rivers particularly in Western Sydney are continuing to rise”.&nbsp;

“Many young families are leaving Sydney because they can’t afford to buy a home. Or they can only afford one in the outer suburbs with a long commute,” said the NSW productivity commissioner.&nbsp;

“If we don’t act, we could become known as the city with no grandchildren,” Achterstraat warned. The report also highlighted the need for greater housing density across the city.&nbsp;

According to the commissioner, the officials must build inner Sydney suburbs and not just add houses on the city’s outskirts. He also said that Sydney needs “hundreds of thousands of new homes over the next two decades” to address the issue. &nbsp;

This, Achterstraat said, would not only help productivity and wages but also cut consumers’ carbon emissions due to shorter commutes and preserve land and green spaces.&nbsp;

“High housing costs work like a regressive tax, with the burden falling disproportionately on low-income earners,” said the productivity commissioner.&nbsp;

<h2>Problem to worsen?</h2>

Australia is also known for being one of the least affordable countries in the world for housing which, as per Bloomberg, has been attributed to strong population growth, limited construction, and an inclination towards smaller households.&nbsp;

Additionally, since there is reportedly a rebound in immigration with more than one million net arrivals in Australia over the next five years, the situation will likely worsen as these people would need a place to live.&nbsp;

However, the problem seems to have been exacerbated in Sydney due to a strong opposition to high apartment blocks among locals.&nbsp;

According to the report, Sydney would have generated 45,000 additional houses without the need for any extra land if the buildings constructed between 2017 and 2022 had been an average of 10 storeys high instead of seven.&nbsp;

Sydney at risk of becoming a city ‘with no grandchildren,’ experts warn

A 56-year-old Australian woman who had served a 20-year prison sentence for the death of her four children had her convictions formally quashed by a court, her lawyers said.

On Thursday (Dec 14), the New South Wales (NSW) Supreme Court found that Kathleen Folbigg was wrongfully convicted declaring that the evidence originally used against her was “not reliable”.

She is expected to seek compensation from the NSW government after the court overturned her conviction.

Often described as one of “Australia's greatest miscarriages of justice”, Folbigg tried to legally challenge the charges through a string of appeals, but they were&nbsp;turned down every time.

The matter was taken up again earlier this year after a landmark inquiry by a retired judge found reasonable doubt over her guilt.

<h2>'How can I kill my own children?'</h2>

On Thursday, she burst into tears outside the court as she thanked the “updated science and genetics” saying that it had given her “answers” as to how her children died.

She also criticised the “system” for wrongly blaming her for murdering her children.

“My children are here with me today and they will be close to my heart for the rest of my life,” she told reporters.

&nbsp;“The system and society need to think before they blame a parent of hurting their children.”

“However, even in 1999, we had legal answers to prove my innocence, but they were ignored and dismissed,” she said.

The court had jailed&nbsp;Folbigg in 2003 on three counts of murder and one of manslaughter after the deaths of her four babies—Caleb, Patrick, Sarah, and Laura —each of whom died suddenly between 1989 and 1999, aged between 19 days and 18 months.

<h2>Media declared her 'Australia’s worst serial killer'</h2>

The first three deaths were initially attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a term used when babies less than a year old die for no apparent reason.

At 18 months, Laura was the longest-lived of Folbigg’s children, and police began investigating after a forensic pathologist determined the cause of her death as “undetermined".

The prosecutors at that time relied on circumstantial evidence, using Folbigg's diaries to paint her as an unstable mother, prone to rage. Notably, the diaries were not examined by psychologists or psychiatrists.

In 2003, she was sentenced to 40 years in jail which was later downgraded to 30 years on appeal.

A 56-year-old Australian woman who had served a 20-year prison sentence for the death of her four children had her convictions formally quashed by a court, her lawyers said. On Thursday (Dec 14), the New South Wales (NSW) Supreme Court found that Kathleen Folbigg was wrongfully convicted declaring that the evidence originally used against her was “not reliable”. She is expected to seek compensation from the NSW government after the court overturned her conviction. Often described as one of “Australia's greatest miscarriages of justice”, Folbigg tried to legally challenge the charges through a string of appeals, but they were turned down every time. The matter was taken up again earlier this year after a landmark inquiry by a retired judge found reasonable doubt over her guilt. 'How can I kill my own children?' On Thursday, she burst into tears outside the court as she thanked the “updated science and genetics” saying that it had given her “answers” as to how her children died. She also criticised the “system” for wrongly blaming her for murdering her children. “My children are here with me today and they will be close to my heart for the rest of my life,” she told reporters. “The system and society need to think before they blame a parent of hurting their children.” “However, even in 1999, we had legal answers to prove my innocence, but they were ignored and dismissed,” she said. The court had jailed Folbigg in 2003 on three counts of murder and one of manslaughter after the deaths of her four babies—Caleb, Patrick, Sarah, and Laura —each of whom died suddenly between 1989 and 1999, aged between 19 days and 18 months. Media declared her 'Australia’s worst serial killer' The first three deaths were initially attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), a term used when babies less than a year old die for no apparent reason. The findings of the research, which is said to be the largest study of its kind ever undertaken globally, were released on Monday (Nov 20).&nbsp;

<h2>‘Deeply concerning’</h2>

The study titled ‘Identifying and understanding child sexual offending behaviour and attitudes among Australian men’ was conducted by UNSW Sydney and Jesuit Social Services and aimed to research the “prevalence of child sexual offending behaviours and attitudes”.&nbsp;

“The first nationally representative research…has shed unprecedented light on sexually abusive behaviours and feelings among Australian men,” said a statement released by the UNSW.&nbsp;

The study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,945 Australian men aged 18 to over 65 and found that one in 10 or 9.4 per cent said they had sexual contact with someone under the age of 18.

This would be around one million men in Australia out of which nearly half of them (4.9 per cent) reported having sexual feelings towards children. The figures also include online offences as 4.3 per cent of Australian men reported having had online sexual conversations with children and 2.5 per cent deliberately watched pornographic material containing people below the age of 18.&nbsp;

According to the study, 4.9 per cent of men with sexual feelings that have committed a sexual offence against children were more likely to be married, working with children, earning higher incomes; report anxiety, depression, and binge drinking behaviours; and have been sexually abused or had adverse experiences in childhood.&nbsp;

These men are also found to be active online, including on social media, encrypted apps and cryptocurrency and consume pornography that involves violence or bestiality, the report added.&nbsp;

At least 3.2 per cent of Australian men said they had had sexual contact with a person below the age of 18 when they were over 18. However, the study also noted that this aspect proved to be a limitation since the age of consent in Australia varies and can be 16 or 17 depending on the state.&nbsp;

According to the study, one in six (15.1 per cent) Australian men reported having sexual feelings towards children.

The UNSW-led study found two distinct groups of child sex offenders - “One which is motivated by sexual interest in children, and a second group who may be offending for situational or opportunistic reasons,” the research found.&nbsp;

<h2>Invest in prevention</h2>

“The prevalence of abuse revealed in this report is deeply concerning,” Georgia Naldrett, Manager of Jesuit Social Services’ Stop it Now! Australia service said&nbsp;in a statement.&nbsp;

The study recommends measures like improving community understanding of the harm of child sexual abuse and challenging attitudes that support it.&nbsp;

It also calls for better online safety measures and safeguarding children where they may be “deemed particularly risky, including schools, day-care, social groups, clubs and any other activity in which children are present.”

They also recommend early intervention for men with sexual feelings towards children who have not committed an offence yet. The study found that out of the men who have sexual feelings, 29.6 per cent want help for their sexual feelings towards children.&nbsp;

Kristin Grace, who posted the video on TikTok first, described the bizarre scene as an “Only in Australia” moment.&nbsp;

The video was immediately flagged with a warning, reading: “The actions in this video are performed by professionals or supervised by professionals. Do not attempt.”

Australia is well-known for its wild and dangerous wildlife. The continent is a hotspot for nearly 200 species of sharks.&nbsp;

Notably, a recent study by California State University found that sharks swim much closer to humans than previously imagined. The researchers arrived at the conclusion after conducting over 1,500 drone flights spanning two years in southern Santa Barbara County and central San Diego County.&nbsp;

"In both spots, the sharks were observed swimming near humans on 97 per cent of the days surveyed, and often within 50 yards of wave breaks. The sharks generally came closest to surfers and stand-up paddle boarders," the study revealed.&nbsp;

It is part of the Temnospondyli family — which refers to resilient amphibians that survived two of the earth's five mass extinction event; including a series of volcanic eruptions that wiped off about 70-80 per cent of all dinosaurs around 66 million years ago.&nbsp;

As per experts, the amphibian which has been named Arenaepeton supinatus, latin for "sand creeper on its back" once lived in the freshwater lakes and streams of Sydney.

As per BBC, the find was serendipity. The farmer, Mihail Mihaildis, was attempting to fix a broken garden wall at his home in Umina, a suburb located around 86 kilometres from Sydney.&nbsp;

For this, he purchased a 1.6 tonne sandstone slab in which he ultimately found the immortalised outline of an unknown creature, this remarkable amphibian of the species Arenaepeton supinatus.&nbsp;The extraordinary find soon goes on full-time display at the Australian Museum.

For NSW, he played over 100 matches and is a member of the state's Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

Following hanging his boots as a player, Taber held various roles within the game, including becoming NSW coach and chairman of selectors. Later, he got selected as manager of the Australian Under-19 Men's Cricket Team.

<h2>Cricket Australia CEO pays tribute</h2>

"Brian's vast popularity among former teammates, and all those fortunate enough to have known him, is just one indication of the impact he had on our game," Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.

"Brian had a passion for the development of young players, and it is fitting that the Player of the Tournament at the Men's National Under-19 Championships will continue to receive the Brian Taber Medal."

New South Wales CEO Lee Germon also paid his tributes to Taber, saying his contribution as a player, coach, manager and selector was immense to Australian cricket. He added, Taber was loved by all for his genuine nature.

"His contribution to Australian cricket was immense, as a player, coach, manager and selector. Tabsy was universally loved for both his skill as a wicketkeeper and his character as a person. He was such a nice, genuine guy, and he will be greatly missed by all," Cricket NSW CEO, Lee Germon said.

Millions of dead and decaying fish have choked up a long length of river in a remote&nbsp; Australian town of Menindee in&nbsp;New South Wales. Multiple videos are going viral on social media showing boats slicing through a layer of dead fish and barely revealing the surface underneath.

According to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, the deaths were probably brought on by low oxygen levels when floodwaters receded. This&nbsp;was made worse because fish needs extra oxygen in the warmer weather. People in the town of Menindee complained of awful smell that the dead fish gave out.&nbsp;

This is&nbsp;the third mass kill in the region in the recent past, the New South Wales government said on Friday. It added&nbsp;that "millions" of fish had perished in the Darling River close to the small town of Menindee.

Earlier,&nbsp;fish fatalities were reported&nbsp;in the same region&nbsp;in 2018 and 2019. About a&nbsp;million fish had&nbsp;died&nbsp;due to inadequate water flow, poor water quality, and abrupt temperature fluctuations.&nbsp;

The Nursing and Midwifery Council also listed examples of OnlyFans scenarios for discussion.&nbsp;

"A patient recognises a nurse from her OnlyFans page and advises other patients and her colleagues of the nurse's OnlyFans content. This creates a difficult situation in the workplace. A colleague reports her to the regulator as she believes her conduct is below the expected standards of a registered nurse and that her behaviour has brought the profession into disrepute," one such example read.&nbsp;

"A senior manager recognises a junior from her OnlyFans page and gives her preferential rostering. He later sends her messages on her OnlyFans account asking for the favour to be returned. The nurse reports him to the regulator," another example read.&nbsp;

According to the Sydney Morning Herald report, nurses were alarmed by the email. “As a nurse, I personally found it very moralising and slut-shaming,” one nurse said. “I found that having an NSW statutory body attempting to regulate what nurses and midwives do in the spare time with their bodies as fairly moralistic … I think unless they are tearing off their NSW Health scrubs and talking about how they are a nurse, what damage is it doing to the profession?” she added.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told the publication that OnlyFans guidelines were a matter for the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is an independent oversight body, and he would not seek to influence it.

Australia: Nurses, midwives warned against posting content on OnlyFans

The Australian police have identified the serial rapist known as “Bondi Beast”&nbsp;after nearly 40 years since his first attack.

Keith Simms, who died in February due to kidney failure aged 66,&nbsp;was named as the criminal who had terrorised Sydney suburbs for over three decades.

According to the police, Simms had targeted 31 women, aged&nbsp;between 14 and 55, from&nbsp;1985 to 2001 by entering their homes or while they were out jogging or walking. He did so even while living an otherwise normal family life.

In 2005, New South Wales Police formed a Strike Force Doreen in order to investigate the five sexual assaults which took place in the city's eastern suburbs.&nbsp;

The police were told by the victims that he would subdue them by using knives or threats and kept his face hidden during the attacks.

Initially the detectives believed there were several men behind these attacks. But after analysing evidence from the 31 sexual assaults and attempted sexual assaults, they concluded it was just one man behind all these incidents.&nbsp;

Owing to the advancement in technology, the investigators were able to link all the incidents to Simms using his DNA.

The link was first found in the early 2000s when women gave similar descriptions of their assailants.

Some of the aspects include 160 to 180 cm in height, dark complexion, brown eyes, wavy hair, and a wide nose. He also wore casual clothes, like tracksuits or hoodies and kept his face covered.&nbsp;

Over the years, he was also known as the “Centennial Park rapist”, “Tracksuit rapist”, the Bondi rapist and the “Bondi Beast” by the media.

The DNA evidence was directly linked to 12 incidents while his modus operandi matched 19 other incidents.

According to reports, his first attack was committed in March 1985 and his last assault on record was in October 2001. &nbsp;

In 2019, police had a breakthrough in the case when they found a familial DNA match in their database and narrowed it down to 324 people which eventually led them to Simms.&nbsp;

“Further investigations and forensic examinations, including additional Y-STR testing, revealed the DNA was linked to a man who died earlier this year, aged 66,” said the NSW police in a statement on Monday.

It said that Strike Force Doreen investigators have since called the victims and advised them the man has been identified but due to his death “no further legal action can be taken.”&nbsp;

The authorities in Hong Kong and Australia were reportedly tipped off by Mexican officials via intelligence exchange. "Mexica-based officers used their international network to alert AFP officers in Hong Kong about the suspicious consignment being shipped from Mexico to Australia via Hong Kong. Ongoing investigations are under way to identify the transnational serious organised criminals involved in the plot," said the AFP in a statement. Authorities believe that the consignment was part of a massive international drug trafficking ring and if it had been unloaded on the New South Wales shores, the drugs could have been sold as about 18 million street-level deals. They added that it was the first time since 2016 that coconut water shipment for drug delivery was observed. The Mexican cartels rarely use this mode of shipment. Last time, the seized contraband weighed only around six kilogrammes. A major Australian gambling firm has been fined AU $100m ($62m) by the regulator for failing to stop money laundering and other criminal activities in its casinos.

According to reports, the Star Entertainment Group’s license to operate its Sydney casino has been suspended, and it will take effect on Friday.

The New South Wales (NSW) Independent Casino Commission's (NICC) action came in response to a report earlier this year which found that the Star’s Sydney casino was involved in money laundering and that it let organised crime thrive.

The report had blasted the operator for taking a "cavalier" approach in monitoring casinos’ activities and also accused it of trying to cover up its illicit actions.

In response to the report at that time, the casino operator pledged to do “whatever necessary” to restore its suitability as an operator and appointed an independent monitor as well as committed to a cultural overhaul.

Under the laws enacted by the NSW government in August, the maximum penalty that can be imposed is a $100 million fine.

On Monday, the regulator said that it won’t revoke the Star's licence altogether in order to protect thousands of jobs, and added that the Sydney casino would function under a manager appointed by the NSW Independent Casino Commission.

“From Friday the Star will not be able to run the casino on its own until it can earn its licence back,” regulatory chief Philip Crawford was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Several of the top executives of the Star group, including former chief executive Matt Bekier, had resigned in light of the scandal.

Robbie Cooke, who took over as the Star’s new chief executive, had earlier committed to restore&nbsp;the firm’s credibility.

“The business had lost its way in a number of areas, but I’m committed to rehabilitating it and restoring the group to suitability [to hold its casino licenses],” Cooke was quoted as saying.

NSW premier crisis deepens, transport minister denies claim that Perrottet offered him lucrative job overseas

The New South Wales (NSW) government has unofficially suggested that children as young as 10 could be put on "extended payment plans" or into unpaid work programmes so that they could pay off heavy fines for breaking Covid restrictions. The news has left the state's community legal centres infuriated.&nbsp;The groups cautioned that children lacked the capacity to pay or comprehend the enforcement mechanism. The Aboriginal flag, flown from government buildings and embraced by sporting clubs and athletes of Aboriginal heritage, was recognised as an official flag of Australia since 1995.

It comes after Australia's centre-left Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, during his election campaign, promised a referendum on giving Aboriginal Australians an institutional role in policymaking.

Cooma, a small Australian town, has a dark secret: a prison that was used to imprison individuals for "homosexual offences" and supposedly served as a human experimentation ground with the purpose of treating homosexuality.

According to historical archives, New South Wales (NSW) Justice Minister Reg Downing is credited with founding the prison.

BBC reports that Downing described Cooma prison as the only criminal institution in the world, devoted only to the incarceration of gay offenders in a press statement in 1958.

In the jail which was reopened in 1957, as per the podcast ‘The Greatest Menace’ many of the prison staff didn’t even know the real reason that gay prisoners were segregated there.

Les Strzelecki, 66, who began working at the prison as a custodial services officer in 1979 and later founded the Corrective Services Museum in Cooma believes that inmates were put there, for their own safety.

"Cooma was a protective institution. We'd red stamp homosexual prisoners with 'N/A': non-association with mainstream prisons," he told BBC. "They were at risk of violence at bigger prisons like Long Bay [in Sydney]."

However, Cliff New, a former employee, maintains it was for less humane motives. He told a podcast series that psychologists and psychiatrists were coming in all the time.

New interpreted these as conversion attempts, as per him these doctors were attempting to put the gay men on the correct path, hoping to "cure them".

The NSW government established a commission to investigate the "cause and treatment of homosexuality" in 1958. A statement stated it would include "experts in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, penology, and social and moral welfare."

As per Patrick Abboud, the podcast’s developer, psychiatrists addressed issues such as 'did your mother's power drive you to despise other women?'. He also said that "over mothering" was concluded to be a significant cause of homosexuality.

Even so, the mission against homosexuality failed despite all the efforts. Gay men had ongoing relationships in prison and would actually commit offences to go back to their boyfriends.

Police officials of New South Wales have launched an investigation after more than a dozen kangaroos were found dead on an Australian coast.<o:p></o:p>

New South Wales police have reported that 14 kangaroos were found dead at two sites near the Batemans Bay on Saturday morning.<o:p></o:p>

Police officials reached the Long Beach area at 7 am after the department received several reports of a number of kangaroos lying dead on the beach.<o:p></o:p>

Officials found five adult kangaroos and one dead joey in Blairs Road and Sandy Place. However, later the officials were informed that seven more adult kangaroos and a joey were dead in the Maloneys Beach area.<o:p></o:p>

While the investigation hasn’t found conclusion yet, officials have reported that initial inquiries have suggested that these kangaroos may have been deliberately killed by someone.<o:p></o:p>

The police department has meanwhile decided to thoroughly examine CCTV footage and are also interviewing several witnesses.<o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile, the police officials have also appealed locals to come forward with any relevant information.
