India's capital city of Delhi has a notorious reputation for being unsafe for women. Recently released data by the country's National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has done little to improve on the said reputation by terming Delhi as the most unsafe metropolitan city in India for women.

Reportedly, Delhi saw a more than 40 per cent rise in crimes against women in 2021, compared to a year prior. A total of 13,500 crimes were reported against the fairer sex in 2021, compared to a little under 10,000 in 2020.

Of the 43,414 crimes reported against women in 19 major cities across the country, Delhi accounted for 32.20 per cent of the cases, suggesting that law and order authorities were not working properly to create a safe environment for women.

Amongst the category of crimes, over 3,948 cases of abduction and kidnapping were reported while 2,022 cases of assault on women with an intent to outrage their modesty were registered by the Bureau.

Similarly, 1,357 reported cases were under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (girl child victims only) while 833 cases of girl child rape came from the capital city alone.

However, what may come as most surprising is the cases of dowry deaths, despite a concerted campaign by the central and state government to discourage dowry.

According to the data, the national capital witnessed 136 cases of dowry deaths, which again accounted for 36.36 per cent of the total cases.

United States' Deputy National Security Advisor for international economics Daleep Singh is likely to visit India in the next few days.

The visit by the US official comes amid a flurry of high-profile visitors, including UK's foreign secretary Elizabeth Truss and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, to New Delhi.

Daleep Singh, an Indian American, has been described as the key architect of Washington's sanctions against Russia since the latter's invasion of Ukraine.

Last week in a statement he said, "The United States and our allies and partners will continue taking action to further isolate Russia from the international economic order as long it continues its brutal war against Ukraine".

Responding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the West, led by the US, have imposed several economic sanctions against Russia and President Vladimir Putin.

While the sanctions have broken the back of Russia’s economy, Moscow is looking towards Asia, in particular China and India, for increased economic engagement.

India's finance ministry and central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, have been working on the rupee-ruble trading system. This is one of the key topics on the agenda of FM Lavrov's Delhi visit.

Daleep Singh is the great-grandnephew of Dalip Singh Saund who was the first Asian American and the first person from non-Abrahamic religion to be elected to US Congress.

The 46-year-old is an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Daleep's visit comes a week after three top US diplomats visited Delhi for foreign office consultations.

They were United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affair Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu and Deputy Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Amanda Dory.

The situation in Ukraine, Quad, and Indo-Pacific were among the key issues of discussions in Delhi when Nuland held talks with Indian foreign secretary Harsh Shringla.

In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the murder of her two-month-old daughter. The police on Tuesday (March 22) said that the body of the baby was found inside a microwave oven in the Chirag Dilli region of India's capital, New Delhi.

As per the police statement, the accused woman has been identified as Dimple, a resident of Chirag Dilli. She was found unconscious in her house on Monday.

The body of her infant daughter was found inside an oven on the second floor of the house. The initial report didn't reveal much but the police have said that the woman has been giving inconsistent statements since her arrest, becoming a key suspect in the baby's death.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Benita Mary Jaiker said, "She [the woman] seems to be disturbed." Jaiker added that she has been interrogated twice, Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Revealing further about the case, Jaiker said, "We received a missing report of a child on Monday around 4.30 pm (local time)."

"When our staff reached the house of the family, it was revealed that the infant had been found and shifted to Madan Mohan Malaviya Hospital. We reached the hospital. There we were told she was declared brought dead," she added.

The post mortem of the child was conducted on Tuesday. Prima facie, the doctors have conjectured that the child was smothered, and might have died a day earlier, and not Monday when she was found.

But, Jaiker said, the exact cause of death can only be ascertained after the post mortem report. The infant had injury marks on her body when she was found, she said.

"It is clearly found that the victim was in her mother's custody. All circumstantial evidence point towards the mother. We have no reason to believe that she was not involved," Jaiker said.

As of now, no other person has been found involved in the incident. The body was put inside the oven in order to hide it from others, police said.

Microsoft Corp unveiled its fourth data centre in India on Monday, betting on rising digital consumption in one of its fastest-growing markets.

"A public cloud data center is not a one time investment, it is a continuous investment that we have," Maheshwari told Reuters. "In the last two years, we doubled the capacity in the existing three data centers."

The overall Indian public cloud services market is expected to reach $10.8 billion by 2025, according to research firm IDC.

India's government has been nudging foreign tech companies to store more of their data locally, a move seen as New Delhi's attempt to gain stricter oversight of Big Tech firms.

Maheshwari said Microsoft was continuing to grow its workforce in India from 18,000 currently "both through the pandemic and going forward."

"We already serve more than 340,000 companies in the country," Maheshwari said.
