A crucial meeting of Nepal's ruling communist party was postponed for the fifth time until Sunday to give more time to Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and the rival faction led by former premier Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' to sort out their differences.

The Standing Committee meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (NCP) was scheduled for Friday but it was postponed until 3 pm on Sunday at the request of Oli and Prachanda.

Earlier in the day, the meeting was deferred for a few hours for parleys.

"The meeting has been fixed for 3 pm Sunday," Surya Thapa, Oli's press advisor, tweeted.
The last time the Standing Committee meeting was held on July 2.

The party has also decided to hold a crucial meeting of its 441-member Central Working Committee (CWC), Ganesh Shah, a Standing Committee member, told PTI.

The Prime Minister's fate will now be decided in the CWC meeting that could be held next week, he said.

The CWC is authorised to take a formal decision on the 'one-man, one-post' to be implemented in the party as per the demand of the dissident group led by Prachanda, he said.

Sunday's Standing Committee meeting is expected to fix the date for the CWC meeting, which will ultimately decide the fate of Prime Minister Oli, Shah said.

The two leaders on Friday held informal talks to sort out their differences.

Friday's meeting of the 45-member Standing Committee was to decide on Prime Minister Oli's future after talks to strike a new power-sharing deal between him and executive chairman of the NCP Prachanda failed to make any headway on Thursday too.

Prime Minister and party chairman Oli, Prachanda and former premier Madhav Kumar Nepal also held an informal meeting at the PM's official residence at Baluwatar in an effort to end the intra-party strife.

During the meeting, Oli refused to resign or give up his position as chairman of the NCP.

A series of meetings tried to sort out the differences between Oli and the dissident group. But, as the Prime Minister didn't accept their condition of a one-man-one-post, the talks failed, party sources said.

Top NCP leaders, including 'Prachanda', have been demanding Prime Minister Oli's resignation, saying his recent anti-India remarks were "neither politically correct nor diplomatically appropriate." They are also against Oli's autocratic style of functioning.

The differences grew further after Oli said that some of the ruling party leaders are aligning with the southern neighbour to remove him from power after his government issued a new political map incorporating three Indian territories.

The Prachanda-Nepal faction rejected the allegations, saying it is them who have asked for resignation, not India.

They asked Oli to show evidence to support his allegation.

Prachanda has said that he will not allow the party to split and any attempt from anywhere to weaken its unity would hurt the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and natural disasters.

Last Friday, the meeting of the Standing Committee was postponed for a fourth time at the last moment, citing floods and landslides in the country.

The differences between the two factions of the NCP, one led by Oli and the other led by Prachanda on the issue of power-sharing, intensified after the prime minister unilaterally decided to prorogue the budget session of Parliament.

Cable operators in Nepal have lifted the ban the government imposed on Indian private news channels -- in view of protests by viewers and people. No official order has, however, been issued by the government.

The resumption may begin from Thursday.

The lifting of the ban began earlier on Monday, where they decided to stream Indian news channels with only a few still debarred.

Dhurba Sharma, vice-president of television operators' association, Nepal, told reporters, "A few news channels airing objectionable content are still banned in the country."

On Thursday, cable television operators stopped the transmission of all Indian private news channels except Doordarshan, accusing them of airing reports hurting Nepal's national sentiment.

Nepal's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology also thanked the cable operators for taking action against Indian news channels.

On Friday, Nepal sent a ''diplomatic note'' to India, urging New Delhi to take steps against the broadcast of materials which it called "fake, baseless and insensitive as well as abusive" to the country and its leadership by a section of the Indian media.

"Such materials are not only misleading and misinforming but also impair the sense of minimum public decency," the ministry said in the note.

The India-Nepal bilateral ties came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8.

Nepal reacted sharply to the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through Nepalese territory. India rejected the claim asserting that the road lies completely within its territory.

Later, Nepal updated the country's political map through a Constitutional amendment, incorporating three strategically important Indian areas.

India termed as "untenable" the "artificial enlargement" of the territorial claims by Nepal. India has handed over a diplomatic note to Nepal over the map issue, Nepalese media reports said.

Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, under pressure to resign amidst a rift in the ruling Nepal Communist Party over his style of functioning, has alleged that some of the ruling party leaders are aligning with the southern neighbour to remove him from power after his government issued a new political map incorporating three Indian territories of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura.

His allegations have been criticised by senior NCP leaders, including former prime minister ''Prachanda'', who demanded Prime Minister Oli's resignation, saying his recent anti-India remarks were "neither politically correct nor diplomatically appropriate."

Nepal's archaeological department plans to start studies and excavation in Thori in the country's south after Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's claim that it is the "real birthplace" of Lord Ram, according to a media report on Thursday.
Several top Nepalese political leaders from different parties have slammed Oli for making "senseless and irrelevant" remarks that Lord Ram was born in Thori near Birgunj and the real Ayodhya lies in Nepal. They have asked him to withdraw his controversial statement.

Following Oli's remarks, the Department of Archaeology (DoA) has been discussing a possible archeological study in the area with different ministries, My Republica newspaper reported.

"The department has been holding several meetings with different ministries to discuss the possibility of starting archaeological studies in Thori of Birgunj," it quoted Ram Bahadur Kunwar, the spokesperson for the DOA, as saying.

DoA Director General Damodar Gautam said the department is serious about conducting archaeological studies in Thori after Prime Minister Oli's statement.

"The department will discuss with experts and will come to a conclusion soon," said Gautam.

However, the DoA doesn't have any basis to start any excavation at Thori - the birthplace of Lord Ram, as claimed by Oli.

"It is our responsibility to carry out a study after such statements by the prime minister. Having said that, I cannot say that we have enough bases to prove that Ayodhya is in Nepal," according to Gautam.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday clarified that the remarks made by Prime Minister Oli "are not linked to any political subject and have no intention at all to hurt the feelings and sentiments of anyone."

It further stressed that his remarks "were not meant to debase the significance of Ayodhya and the cultural value it bears."

"As there have been several myths and references about Shri Ram and the places associated with him, the Prime Minister was simply highlighting the importance of further studies and research of the vast cultural geography the Ramayana represents to obtain facts about Shri Ram, Ramayana and the various places linked to this rich civilisation," the ministry said.

The clarification came after much public outcry in India and Nepal over Prime Minister Oli's controversial remarks on Ayodhya.

BJP national spokesperson Bizay Sonkar Shastri condemned Oli's remarks and said that the Left parties even in India played with people's faith, and the Communists in Nepal will be rejected by the masses in the same way they have been here.

"Lord Ram is a matter of faith for us, and people will not allow anybody, be it prime minister of Nepal or anyone, to play with this," he said on Monday.

Opposition Nepali Congress has strongly condemned Oli's controversial statements on Ayodhya and said that he has "lost the moral and political basis" to rule the country.

The party also sought the official stand of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (NCP) and the government on the Prime Minister's remarks on Ayodhya.

Oli is already facing strong opposition from his own party leaders who are pressing for his resignation over his autocratic style of functioning and previous anti-India statement.

Rashtriya Ekta Samaj, a fringe outfit, on Tuesday, staged a protest outside the Pakistan Embassy in Kathmandu, accusing the Pakistan government of destroying Hindu and Buddhist temples in that country.

The protestors also burnt Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's effigies while raising the issue of atrocities against the minority Hindus in Pakistan.

Recently, another demonstration took place in Nepal on a similar pattern where an effigy of Imran Khan was burnt. It was coordinated by outfits like Rashtriya Ekta Samaj and Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh`s Nepal chapter.

Earlier in June this year, India too had strongly raised the issue with Pakistan. It had issued a strong demarche to the Pakistan High Commission over what India called "systematic" and "targeted" demolition of residences belonging to the minority Hindus in the Punjab province.

This growing assertion of Hindu rights in Nepal comes amid the government`s growing proximity to communist China and its Prime Minister`s controversial claim that Lord Ram didn`t belong to India.

Nepal is desperate to rub India the wrong way. From map fixing to banning Indian channels, the government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has tried it all.

Now, Oli claims that Hindu deity Lord Ram was a Nepali and not an Indian and that India has set up a fake Ayodhya.

Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram and the city of Ayodhya is located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh but misleading the world with 'alternative history' is trick from the Chinese playbook and clearly Nepal is learning.

Nepal is not shy to follow the same path. First, Nepal banned the media, muzzled free press and propaganda then it questioned an age-old status quo just to divert attention from the crisis at home.

There is a media war going on in the country. Nepal has accused the India media of unfair reportage and rumour-mongering. Private Indian channels were taken off air on July 9.

The government of KP Sharma Oli confirmed the ban over the weekend adding that the blackout will be in place till Indian channels change their approach.

It is Nepal's indiscriminate use of territorial nationalism villainising of India to score brownie points from China. It may work for a while or it may seem like it's working but the law of diminishing returns has set in and people have come out in protest demanding accountability, not rhetoric.

All of this is happening in Kathmandu plus the prime minister is struggling to keep his chair. There's no political resolution. Now Nepal's Supreme Court has entered the picture.

It has issued a show-cause notice to the government of Nepal. The notice asks a simple question, "Why are Nepalese working in India not included in the foreign employment category?"

Unlike the Nepalese working in other countries, those working in India do not need labour permits or insurance. Nepal's foreign employment act of 2007 rules out discrimination based on the country of employment.

India has never really treated Nepalese workers as foreigners. There are close to 8 million of them working in India. They have access to an open border. They do not need a visa or a work permit. So the current status is actually in favour of Nepal.

Not just its people, but also the government. The Nepali government did not have to provide financial support or other compensation to its citizens working in India.

But recently, a petition was filed by the forum for national building Nepal. The court's show-cause notice was in response to the petition.

The government hasn't replied yet. It is busy saving itself. The rift in the ruling party the Nepal Communist Party remains as wide as ever. There are two sides. One led by prime minister-- KP Sharma Oli, the other by the party's co-chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Now they're fighting over nationalism. A tug of war to prove who's a bigger nationalist. Dahal has hit out at Oli saying that no one has a monopoly that's because Oli took the entire credit for changing Nepal's map. Nepal depicted Indian territories, Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani as its own. The new map was signed into the constitution last month.

Oli claims credit for it and Dahal won't let him. So they continue to fight. This desperation to impress China by burning bridges with India is doing Nepal no good.
