The five Mexican nationals killed in a helicopter crash in eastern Nepal near Mount Everest on Tuesday had visited India before touring the Himalayan nation for sightseeing.

The Manang Air helicopter 9N-AMV took off from Surke Airport in Solukhumbu district at 10:04 am for Kathmandu on Tuesday and suddenly lost contact at an altitude above 12,000 feet at 10.13 am (local time).

The helicopter crashed in the Lamjura area of Likhupike Rural Municipality in the remote mountainous Solukhumbu district.

The dead pilot has been identified as Captain CB Gurung, a Nepali national. The five passengers killed in the crash — all of them Mexican nationals — were identified as Fernando Sifuentes (95), Abril Sifuentes Gonzalez (72), Luz Gonzalez Olacio (65), Maria Jose Sifuentes (52) and Ismael Rincon (98).

The family had also visited India as one of the victims, Abril Sifuentes Gonzalez, on July 5 posted a photo of herself on a social media platform in front of the Taj Mahal days before the accident.

Mexico's Ambassador to India Federico Salas said that the victims were family members originally from Nuevo Leon, according to Mexican News Daily.

"It was a family of five people, in effect, who were tourists. They went to Nepal. (...) They were a father and mother and three children. (...) The parents and children were adults, they were not little ones", Salas was quoted as saying by the Infobae Mexico.

Meanwhile, the bodies have been airlifted to Kathmandu and are kept at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for post-mortem, Gyanendra Bhul, Information Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), The Himalayan Times newspaper was quoted as saying.

Speaking to the media in Janakpurdham, Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister Sudan Kirati announced that the government would conduct a comprehensive investigation to uncover the factors that led to this unfortunate incident.

"All the passengers who died were from the same Mexican family and had flown to the Khumbu region yesterday for mountain flight as well to observe Sherpa culture," Director of Manang Air, Mukti Pandey said.

Nepal's tourist and mountaineering season ended in May. The flights carrying tourists to the mountains are less common this time of year as visibility is poor and weather conditions fickle.

There seem to be two versions of China's belt & road initiative in Nepal, while Beijing says several projects are under implementation already. Kathmandu has denied such claims - saying not even a single project is underway. They say the projects are still only under consideration. Nepal-China ties have become a war of words. The big question is this-why is China unilaterally placing one project after another in Nepal under the BRI?

A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, on Wednesday (June 28) found that an increase in temperatures leads to a substantial rise in domestic violence against women.

The South Asia-based study looks at three countries, India, Pakistan, and Nepal between 2010 and 2018, where thousands of girls and women spoke about their experience of emotional, physical and sexual violence.

It also noted that without any steps taken to limit emissions which contribute to global warming and climate change, in the 2090s, India might experience the highest rate of violence against women among the three countries studied.

What did the study find?

According to the study, one degree Celsius rise in average annual temperature was linked to an increase of more than 6.3 per cent in incidents of physical and sexual domestic violence across the three countries.

The researchers tracked 194,871 girls and women aged between 15 and 49 to study the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its types which include physical, sexual, and emotional violence across India, Pakistan and Nepal.

“A significant association was found between high ambient temperature and the prevalence of IPV against women,” said the study, adding that with every one degree Celsius increase in the annual mean temperature, they noted a total of 4.49 per cent IPV prevalence.

The research also projected that IPV prevalence would increase by as much as 21 per cent by the end of this century under the “unlimited emissions scenarios.” However, if steps are taken to curb emissions contributing to climate change and global warming, the IPV prevalence would “moderately increase,” said the researchers.

In its projected increase in violence, the study also found that physical (28.3 per cent) and sexual violence (26.1 per cent) were significantly higher than emotional (8.9 per cent).

Speaking about the findings of the research, Michelle Bell, a professor of environmental health at Yale University and a co-author of the study, said there were “many potential pathways, both physiological and sociological, through which higher temperature could affect risk of violence”.

Extreme heat sets off a chain reaction of socio-economic effects like crop failures, and effects on income, and forces people to stay at home without any means to earn a daily wage, which puts a lot of pressure on households and gives rise to violence against women.

The study also found that IPV is significantly more prevalent in lower-income and rural households when compared to heat-related increases in violence in higher-income groups. The research was conducted across all income groups.

“There is growing evidence that extreme heat can affect stress, lower inhibitions, increase aggression, and exacerbate mental illness,” said Bell, as quoted by the United Kingdom-based media outlet.

Heatwave in India and its relation with rise in domestic violence

According to the study, India is projected to witness the highest IPV prevalence in the 2090s among the three countries with 23.5 per cent when compared to Nepal (14.8 per cent) and Pakistan (5.9 per cent). This comes as India witnessed several heat-related deaths, earlier this year, with temperatures up to 45 degree Celsius in certain parts of the country.

Nepal: LGBTQ couples get their happily ever after

Nepal's Supreme Court on Wednesday issued an interim order to the government to temporarily register same-sex marriages, a notice by the court said. A single bench of Justice Til Prasad Shrestha issued the order to the government to make necessary arrangements for registering the marriage of sexual and gender minority couples if they demand so, the directive said. Seven people, including activist Pinky Gurung on behalf of Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an LGBTI rights organisation, filed a writ to the Prime Minister and the Office of the Council of Ministers to legalise same-sex marriage.

Nepal's Supreme Court issues order to register same-sex marriages

The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued an interim order to the government, instructing it to temporarily allow the registration of same-sex marriages. The court order, issued by Justice Til Prasad Shrestha, requires the government to make the necessary arrangements for registering marriages of couples from sexual and gender minority groups if they wish to do so.

Legalisation demanded of same-sex marriage

The decision came after seven individuals, including activist Pinky Gurung representing the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an organisation advocating for LGBTI rights, filed a writ to the Prime Minister and the Office of the Council of Ministers, urging the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

In addition to ordering the government to enable registration, the Supreme Court has given the opponents of same-sex marriage 15 days to provide a written reply on the matter.

Same-sex marriage and Nepal's constitution

The petitioners argue that despite a Supreme Court ruling 15 years ago that allowed same-sex marriages, the Nepalese law has obstructed the implementation of such marriages. They base their argument on Clause 69 (1) of the National Civil Code 2017, which guarantees the freedom to marry for all individuals, and Clause 18 (1) of the Nepalese Constitution 2015, which states that all citizens are equal under the law. They are demanding the legalisation of same-sex marriage based on these constitutional provisions.

Pinky Gurung of the BDS stated that following the court's order, same-sex marriages can now be registered until specific laws are formulated to officially recognise these unions. She emphasised that although the Supreme Court had previously allowed same-sex marriage through an order 15 years ago, the absence of specific legislation had prevented its implementation, thereby forcing individuals from the third-gender community to seek legal recourse.

Same-sex marriage in India

The issue of same-sex marriage is a burning one in India too, where the Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on the legalisation after a hearing that lasted 10 days. According to petitioners who favour legalisation, the official recognition of marriage will give them certain rights and privileges that they can't avail otherwise.

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has also advocated for same-sex marriage legalisation in the country. However, the Central government, the national child rights body NCPCR, and a body of Islamic scholars called the Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind continue to oppose the proposals.

Nepal's former Prime Minister KP Oli, a "self-declared atheist" did something before the 2021 general elections which was widely perceived to be populist. Oli offered 104 kg of gold to Kathmandu's Pashupatinath Temple. It was considered to be a move to appease the Hindu community in Nepal. The gold was used to make 'Jalahari' or an ornament for God.

On Sunday, the Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), which is Nepal's anti-corruption body, uprooted the Jalahari in order to check for impurities as concerns emerged that out of 104 kg, about 7 kg was made of silver or copper alloys. The Jalahari is being checked for impurities, reported Indian Express.

The CIAA began looking into the matter after a complaint was lodged.

International flights are now operating from Nepal's Pokhara International Airport. The airport inaugurated in January has performed barely and has barely managed to sustain itself. Notably, it was built with China's support.

Over six months after Pokhara International Airport (PIA) was inaugurated in Nepal, the airport witnessed its first international landing. A Sichuan Airlines A319 aircraft from Chengdu, China landed on the airport tarmac at 9:06 am on Wednesday. The flight had passengers, including athletes who will be participating in Nepal China Dragon Boat Race Festival to be held from June 23 to June 25 at Phewa Lake in Pokhara. However, the landing, which was supposed to be a milestone, may turn into yet another controversy. After the landing, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song reiterated that the airport was built under Beijing's highly ambitious Belt and Roads Initiative (BRI). “The Pokhara International Airport, which commenced in January 2023, was planned and constructed with the assistance of the Chinese government. It was built by Chinese engineers. Today, we have achieved a significant milestone with the successful landing of an international flight at Pokhara International Airport. This achievement falls within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project," said Chen. Notably, a day prior to the opening of the airport, Chen courted controversy by saying the airport was a “flagship project of China-Nepal BRI cooperation”. “This is the flagship project of China-Nepal BRI cooperation. Warmly congratulations to Nepali Gov and Nepali people!” the embassy said. Despite the first landing, experts remain pessimistic about the airport's future. A Chinese airline landing in an airport constructed using Chinese money does not inspire confidence among the shareholders. Ever since the airport was constructed, it has been in the news but for all the wrong reasons. Two weeks after the inauguration, a Yeti Airlines twin-engine ATR 72 plane crashed, attempting a landing at the airport. Reportedly, the plane crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport. There were 72 people onboard the plane, including two infants, four crew members and 10 foreign nationals. According to reports, 68 died in the crash. WATCH | Nepal Plane Crash: Pokhara International Airport temporarily closed × China's debt trap? According to The Annapurna Express, in March 2016, China's Exim Bank provided $215.96 million in a loan agreement for the construction of the airport, which is surrounded by the pristine Annapurna Mountain Range In order to sustain itself, the airport should be conducting at least 100 daily domestic and 500 weekly international flights, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). The airport has to pay $3.2 million alone in annual interest for which it needs to have income in excess of $19 million when it operates at full potential. However, experts argue that even then, the airport would struggle to pay the instalments on time. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
