Gravitas: China's ambassador to Nepal foul mouths India

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song appeared to violate diplomatic conventions as he attempted to project Nepal's ties with India in a negative light, while pitching China as a better partner for the Himalayan nation.

Ambassador Chen was speaking at a programme held at a hotel in Kathmandu's New Baneswor. Among the attendees was Devraj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal.

During his speech, Chen spoke about what he called "India's influence in Nepal". While acknowledging vastness of Indian market, Chen advised Nepal to tread cautiously.

"Unfortunately, you have a neighbor like India, because India is a huge market, huge potential you can tap into. But at the same time, India’s policy towards Nepal and other neighbours are not so friendly and not so beneficial to Nepal," he said.

Chinese ambassador to Nepal attempts to downplay India-Nepal ties

India beat Nepal in a rain-marred match to enter the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, September 4. India skipper Rohit Sharma, however, said that the players were not at their best and that they have to up the game as there's no room for 'complacency in the Super Four stage.'

"We can't really look too much into these two games, one was washed out, but luckily we got to bat in the first game and bowl in this one. We haven't been at our best, but a few guys are coming out after months out of the game. Once we move ahead in the Super Fours, there's no room for complacency. First game, under pressure, Hardik and Ishan got us into a good position. Today our bowling was okay, but fielding was bad," said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

Rohit was adjudged Player of the Match for his 74 not out off 59 balls, but said: “To start with, there were some nerves, but once I got my eye in, I wanted to cash in and get my team home.”

India, after winning the toss, asked Nepal to bat first in overcast Kandy, Sri Lanka. The Asian minnows made merry of the dropped chances by India - three in the first five overs - as they reached 65 inside 10 overs. The spinners, along with first-change pacers Shardul Thakur and Hardik Pandya, then turned up the heat as Nepal folded for 230 runs in 48.5 overs.

Starting the chase, India were 17/0 in 2.1 overs before rain halted play. At the restart, India were given a changed target of 147 runs in 23 overs as per Duckworth Lewis System (DLS) which they achieved without losing a wicket. Apart from Rohit, Shubman Gill also scored a fifty and remained not out on 67 off 62 balls as India won in 20.1 overs by 10 wickets.

Asia Cup: 'No room for complacency in Super Four,' says skipper Rohit Sharma after India beat Nepal

Coming off a washout, India would hope they only have greenhorns Nepal to tackle and not rain as the heavyweights eye a berth in the Super Four of the Asia Cup here on Monday. From Group A, Pakistan have already qualified to the Super Four with 3 points, and India have one point from the washed-out game against their arch-rivals on Saturday.

Even in the event of another rain-marred match on the morrow, India can advance to the Super Four with two points, but Rohit Sharma's men will certainly not want it that way.

India received some encouraging signals from their match against Pakistan, and they would want to build on them ahead of the business end of this tournament and much sterner assays in the waiting.

Pakistan pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf had reduced India to 66 for 4 by the 15th over. At that point, India's worries might have been accentuated by the fact that they have a jelly middle-order.

Ishan Kishan was playing the first match of his career at No. 5 in ODIs and Hardik Pandya never really fitted the bill of a firefighter.

However, both Kishan and Pandya overcame their personal predicaments to amass 138 runs for the fifth wicket, cornerstone of India's eventual 266.

Kishan was particularly impressive, as his forte is being a dashing top-order batsman.

So, there was that hint of doubt whether Kishan would be able to make the necessary adjustments to his batting and approach to suit the No. 5 slot.

He excelled on both the counts. As a top-order batter Kishan was susceptible to pacers who could move the ball around.

Instead of trusting his defence, Kishan's method to get out of the cage was being aggressive. But here he had to be defensive.

Rauf, Afridi and Naseem Shah tested his fortitude but for once Kishan showed that he can offer a scratch.

Nepal do not have the quality of Pakistan, but Kishan would like to have a go at them and add some more runs under his belt to boost his new profile.

Similarly, the management will also welcome the composure Pandya showed while playing second fiddle to Kishan, and the seamless shifting of gears the all-rounder did after the left-hander's dismissal.

The adaptability and the no-egotistical methods of Pandya would have pleased the think-tank no end.

Even though the stuttering effort of their top four – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer – against Pakistan pacers could be treated as an aberration, the management would want them to get into ODI mode at the earliest.

Rohit and Kohli were rested for the ODIs against the West Indies, while Shreyas Iyer is making his return after an injury lay-off.

Nepal might just give the trio the perfect opposition to earn some valuable game time and runs.

However, the team top brass might be a tad disappointed because the bowlers never got a chance to test their skills against a quality opponent in Pakistan.

They would have been eager to see how Jasprit Bumrah responded to the task of bowling 10 overs and fielding the length of 50 overs.

Hence, his performance will be keenly monitored against Nepal.

Nepal, who lost to Pakistan by 238 runs in the tournament opener, would be eager to mask their lack of cricketing pedigree with their enthusiasm.

Their biggest hope to make some impact in the match will be leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and captain Rohit Paudel.

But in the real world, they will be more than happy to limit the damage to the minimum against a cricketing powerhouse like India.

Asia Cup: India aim Super Four berth against Nepal after washout with Pakistan

Pakistan started their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on Wednesday, August 30, against Nepal and their skipper Babar Azam led from the front. After losing two early wickets, Babar held the innings together first with Mohammed Rizwan and then with Iftikhar Ahmed as Pakistan went on top in their innings.

Babar scored a magnificent 151 as the hosts posted a mammoth total of 342/6 runs in 50 overs. Babar, in the process of hitting his ton, broke an ODI record as well. This was Babar's 19th ton overall in one-day games and he took just 102 innings to get there. He now tops the list of batsmen who are fastest to reach 19 ODI tons, leaving past the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.

Completing the top five of the list are Australia David Warner in 139 innings and de Villiers in 171 innings.

As for the match, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in Multan. Nepal, playing first time in the regional tournament, did well to scalp two quick wickets of openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. Babar then added 86 runs for the third wicket with Rizwan (44) who got out rather funnily.

Nepal created an opening in 28th over of the innings by taking Agha Salman (5) out shortly after Rizwan's wicket but that was the last they celebrated. Ahmed (109 not out) joined his captain on the crease and the duo added 214 runs for the fifth wicket before Pak lost two wickets in last over while trying to accelerate.

For Nepal, Sompal Kami took wickets while Karan KC and Sandeep Lamichhane took one each.

Six Indian pilgrims among seven killed in Nepal bus crash

West Indies and Zimbabwe notched up victories in their respective opening Cricket World Cup Group A qualifiers over the United States and Nepal on Sunday. Two-time world champions West Indies recovered from the early loss of openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers as four players hit half-centuries as they made 297 all out off 49.3 overs.

Johnson Charles top scored with 66, while Jason Holder (56), Roston Chase (55) and skipper Shai Hope (54) all went past 50, Nicholas Pooran also chipped in with 43 runs.

Zimbabwe beat Nepal in one-sided affair

Earlier in the day, unbeaten centuries by skipper Craig Ervine and Sean Williams in a 164-run partnership guided Zimbabwe to an eight-wicket win over Nepal.

Chasing an imposing total of 290, Ervine hit a 128-ball 121 featuring 15 fours and a six, while Williams struck 102 off 70 balls as Zimbabwe reached 291 for the loss of two wickets with 35 balls remaining.

Openers Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh hit 99 and 66 respectively to help Nepal to 290 for eight wickets off their 50 overs at the Harare Sports Club.

Wellington Masakadza eventually claimed both Bhurtel and Sheikh's wickets and Richard Ngarava took 4-43 off his nine overs.

In front of a large crowd, Zimbabwe lost Joylord Gumbie (25) and Wessly Madhevere (32) before Ervine and Williams took control of Nepal's bowling attack.

"We didn't start really well, dropped catches cost us but credit to the guys for pulling it back. We thought that 280/290 would be chaseable because the wicket looked very nice," said Ervine. "I think it's well played today, rest day tomorrow and a quick turnaround when we play the Netherlands next on Tuesday."

A Nepali Congress MP from Kathmandu was arrested, on Thursday, for allegedly possessing fake academic certificates by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Sunil Sharma, who was elected from the Morang-3 constituency, was arrested on charges of forgery related to his educational certificates, Nepal Police spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Kuber Kadayat said.

As per local media reports, Sharma who is also a medical professional and runs a hospital, was charged with a similar case nearly seven years ago.

The ruling party in Nepal, Nepali Congress, opposes his arrest.

"He was arrested because he demanded the resignation of Home and Finance Ministers over a gold smuggling case," Nepali Congress lawmaker Arjun Nar Singh KC alleged.

"Why did the police drop the investigation seven years back against Sharma and why are they digging out now," he asked.

Sharma is a verbal critic of Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Finance Minister Prakash Sharan for their alleged involvement in the gold smuggling case. Shrestha belongs to the CPN (Maoist Center), whereas Mahat is from the Nepali Congress.

Last month, on July 18, Nepal police had seized around 100 kg of gold near the Kathmandu airport.

After the confiscation by the police, Sharma released a statement accusing the Home and Finance Ministries saying that such a quantity of the precious metal cannot be smuggled from Hong Kong to Kathmandu without the involvement of ministries.

After the arrest, Sharma was taken into custody under Article 103 (6) of the Constitution of Nepal, the CIB informed House Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire.

The CIB further said that the MP was arrested as per the law since the probe was considered necessary on the charge of possession of fake academic certificates.

Some of the doctors in Nepal have allegedly obtained registration from Nepal Medical Council by submitting fake academic certificates from India and have then attended exams conducted by the Council for registration certificates, said CIB.

The Bureau further added that at least seven doctors, who used fake academic certificates to pursue MBBS, were also arrested on Thursday and Friday. Similarly, Sharma's certificate of I.Sc. was 'not verified' by the National Examinations Board, news agency IANS reported citing CIB.

The steep increase in tomato prices has led residents living along the India-Nepal border in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district to cross over into Nepal for tomato purchases, according to The Times of India (ToI) report.

People residing in Dharchula and Banbasa, situated near the border, are venturing into Nepal due to significantly lower tomato prices across the border. In India, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 120 (roughly $1.5) per kg or more, whereas in Nepal, they cost between Nepali Rs 100 to Rs 110 (roughly $1.5), equivalent to around Rs 70-75 (nearly a dollar) per kg.

Profitable business for vegetable vendors

A resident of Darchula in Nepal revealed that vegetable vendors are making double the usual profits as Indian shoppers flock to buy tomatoes across the border.

Nepalese farmers have observed the rising trend in vegetable prices in India. In response, the Nepalese government has been supporting farmers to diversify their crops, encouraging a shift from grains to vegetables.

Farmers in Nepal have now begun cultivating seasonal and non-seasonal vegetables, including tomatoes, to meet the high demand in India.

Additional vegetables cultivated and supplied to India

In addition to tomatoes, Nepalese farmers are cultivating cauliflower and spinach, supplying them to the Indian market when demand and prices are favourable. Kamal Joshi, a vegetable businessman in Nepal, shared this information with ToI.

Role of exchange rate and cross-border purchases

The exchange rate between the Indian rupee and Nepali rupee also plays a significant role in attracting Indian shoppers to Nepal for tomato purchases. Nepalese traders prefer payment in Indian rupees as it translates to higher Nepali rupee earnings, said another Nepali resident.

Pithoragarh DM Reena Joshi commented on the situation, stating that people from both sides of the border engage in limited cross-border purchases for daily essentials. Security agencies monitor these transactions to ensure compliance with regulations.

According to agricultural experts, tomato prices are expected to rise further, possibly reaching Rs 300 ($3.65) per kg in the coming weeks.

The incessant rains in certain areas, combined with inadequate showers in others, have significantly affected tomato production and transportation, leading to this increase in the cost of the kitchen staple.
