Seconds after the NBA's first games in India ended, the packed Mumbai stadium erupted with cheers as spectators -- some of whom were still struggling to understand basketball etiquette -- rose to their feet.

In a country where cricket reigns supreme, basketball has long struggled to make a mark, and the NBA took no chances, launching a promotional blitzkrieg before the pre-season games between the Sacramento Kings and the Indiana Pacers.

As Indiana Pacers power forward Myles Turner, who helped his team to victories on Friday and Saturday, put it, "When you think of basketball, you don't necessarily think of India."

But the 7,000 sold-out seats and howls of enthusiasm at Saturday's match suggested that, at least for some Indians, basketball matters.

"It was an exhilarating experience... a brilliant experience," said 22-year-old graduate student Akash Saraswati, who saved up for his ticket costing more than $90.

Even a broken leg could not stop him travelling to Mumbai from the neighbouring city of Pune. "I didn't hesitate," he said.

Many of those who packed the stands were die-hard fans like Saraswati, travelling from as far afield as Delhi and Bangalore.

Others were there for a taste of something new, grappling with the rules as they watched the players dribble, dive and dunk.

"There's so much grace and effortless co-ordination among the players. It's beautiful to watch," said sales executive Rajesh Kamble, who admitted he was still trying to figure out the sport.

The game may have confused some, but the entertainment was familiar territory -- Bollywood dances replaced cheerleader routines and a Mumbai hip-hop group took over the floor before the tip-off.

The courtside audience included celebrities such as Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. The biggest ovation of the night, however, was for NBA legend Larry Bird, whose presence brought the crowd to its feet.

What happens once 'circus' leaves?

But questions remain about how much the NBA -- whose 2017-18 season revenue was a staggering $8 billion, according to Forbes -- is willing to invest in India and whether its audience will be restricted to hardcore fans and wealthy urbanites.

"The fact that the circus has come to town is a great thing," said Vishal Jhunjhunwala, partner at Mumbai-based sports marketing firm, Square Consulting.

"But what happens once the circus leaves town?

"You need a local connect, a superstar with Indian roots for basketball to take off. That doesn't exist at the moment, unlike say China where the presence of a star like Yao Ming galvanised his whole country into following the sport," Jhunjhunwala told AFP.

No Indian player has ever taken part in an NBA game and although NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told reporters that he hopes to see that change within five years, few are holding their breath.

And, unlike cricket which is played everywhere from India's slums to members’ clubs, basketball enjoys a limited appeal in the country of 1.3 billion people.

The cheapest ticket for Saturday's game cost 4,500 rupees ($65), going up to an astronomical 85,000 rupees for courtside seats. In comparison, a season pass for next week's second Test between India and South Africa in Pune tops out at 5,000 rupees.

Although the high price did not deter well-heeled sports fans, analysts say the NBA risks losing out on a huge chunk of India's audience if it doesn't build up mass appeal.

"You are asking people to spend a lot to watch a sport they don't know much about," said Jhunjhunwala.

To those in the stands, however, the spectacle was well worth the big bucks.

"I am a cricket fan but... basketball also has huge potential and hopefully this is the start of a new sporting journey", said 25-year-old Danish Contractor.

In his comments, the NBA's Silver said the games "required us bringing in a court, a scoreboard, seats, locker rooms" to Mumbai.

They will have to do much more if the sport is to have a long-term future in the country, experts say as the NBA pre-season Asia tour now heads off to Japan and China for further matches over the coming week.

"One game isn't going to turn India into a basketball-loving nation. But it's a first step," said Jhunjhunwala.

"If they lose money on it, well, they have deep pockets".

Joseph Tsai, the co-founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, has made a deal to purchase full control of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets from Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov, the club announced Friday.

The Nets said Prokhorov has made an agreement with the Taiwanese-Canadian businessman to sell the Barclays Center arena and his 51 per cent controlling interest in the Nets.

Tsai bought 49 per cent of the Nets last year for $1 billion, with the chance to purchase more shares before the start of the 2021-22 campaign.

The deal, according to multiple reports, will cost Tsai $2.35 billion, the highest price ever paid for a US sports team.

Tilman Fertitta paid a record $2.2 billion for the NBA's Houston Rockets in 2017, the same price hedge fund owner David Tepper paid last year to buy the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

Tsai has an estimated net worth of $9.4 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Prokhorov bought the Nets in 2010 and guided their move from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

"I've had the opportunity to witness up close the Brooklyn Nets rebuild that Mikhail started a few years ago," Tsai said.

"He hired a front office and coaching staff focused on player development, he supported the organisation with all his resources and he refused to tank.

"I will be the beneficiary of Mikhail's vision, which put the Nets in a great position to compete, and for which I am incredibly grateful.

"We are committed to maintaining Barclays Center's iconic status by bringing together culture, community, and entertainment for our fans and everyone in New York."

The Nets deal, expected to close by the end of September and thus ahead of the mid-October start of the 2019-20 NBA campaign, will make Tsai the arena board of directors chairman and the team owner, provided the NBA board of governors gives its approval as expected.

The current management will run the team and venue, with Nets chief executive Brett Yormark overseeing the ownership transition before departing.

"It has been an honour and a joy to open Barclays Center, bring the Nets to Brooklyn, and watch them grow strong roots in the community while cultivating global appeal," Prokhorov said.

"The team is in a better place today than ever before and I know that Joe will build on that success."

The Nets made two huge free agency signings in the early minutes of the transfer period, landing two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant and star guard Kyrie Irving.

While Durant is likely to miss all of the 2019-20 campaigns with a torn Achilles tendon, the Nets are likely to improve on last season's 42-40 mark and could become a serious Eastern Conference contender upon his return to form.

Toronto Raptors rally: 4 wounded, 3 arrested in shooting at the celebration of NBA title

The Toronto Raptors captured their first NBA crown on Thursday, defeating Golden State 114-110 to become the first league champion from outside the United States by dethroning the defending titleholders.

Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 26 points while Kawhi Leonard and reserve Fred VanVleet each added 22 as Toronto won the best-of-seven series four games to two.

Leonard was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career after the first in 2014 with San Antonio, which traded him to Toronto last July.

"Last summer I was going through a lot. I just kept working hard and had my mind set on this goal right here. This is why I play basketball. This is what I work hard for. I'm glad to see it all pay off," Leonard said.

The Raptors became the first Canadian club to win a major North American sports title since the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays captured Major League Baseball's World Series.

Klay Thompson scored 30 points to lead the Warriors but left the game with a left knee injury late in the third quarter after landing awkwardly on his left leg.

Injury-hit Golden State was already without two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant, who returned in game five Monday after being sidelined for a month only to suffer a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

Andre Iguodala added 22 points for the Warriors, Stephen Curry had 21 and Draymond Green contributed 11 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists.

"Everybody on this team played with a lot of heart. We just came up a little short," Green said.

Golden State had a final shot to win trailing 111-110 but Curry missed a 3-pointer and Green called a timeout when the team had none, setting up three final free throws by Leonard to seal the victory.

The Raptors spoiled the Warriors' farewell appearance at Oracle Arena, Golden State's home since 1971 will be replaced by a new $1 billion venue in San Francisco next season.

Toronto's triumph made this first NBA Finals where road teams won five consecutive games.

Lowry scored 21 points in the first half to give Toronto a 60-57 lead, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Thompson led the Warriors with 18 first-half points.

Thompson goes down

Iguodala scored six points in a 14-4 Warriors run, joining Curry and Thompson in hitting 3-pointers in the spurt to give Golden State an 80-76 advantage just before disaster struck again.

Thompson landed awkwardly on his left leg on a missed shot and went to the floor writhing in pain, being helped to the locker room with a knee injury as the Warriors called a timeout.

Walking to the locker room, Thompson turned back and returned to the court, a standing crowd screaming with delight to see him sink two free throws.

Thompson couldn't have returned had he not shot the free throws, which gave the Warriors their biggest lead at 85-80.

But after he was seen limping, Thompson was removed and later ruled out with a left knee injury, seen walking out of the arena on crutches.

VanVleet big late

Fielding largely reserves, Golden State held off Toronto but VanVleet sank two 3-pointers and his three free throws with 5:39 remaining pulled the Raptors level at 99-99.

VanVleet struck again from 3-point range and Serge Ibaka scored off a rebound to put Toronto ahead 106-101 with 3:03 remaining.

Draymond Green's 3-pointer pulled the Warriors within 108-105 and after trading free throws, Cousins scored a layin to pull Golden State within 109-108 with 46 seconds remaining.

Siakam hit a jumper but Curry answered with two free throws and after Toronto's Danny Green threw a bad pass out of bounds, the Warriors got the ball with nine seconds remaining down 111-110, setting up the closing drama.

A roaring crowd created an electric atmosphere with a standing ovation at the start but Lowry quieted them with three 3-pointers and a layup for all the Raptor points in an 11-2 run to begin the game.

Thompson had 10 points and Cousins five in a 19-9 Golden State run for a 27-26 Warriors edge and the game stayed tight the rest of the first half.

Should college athletes continue to play for free?

New York Knicks center Enes Kanter says he will not go to London for a game with his NBA team because he fears he could be assassinated for criticizing Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Kanter, who is Turkish, expressed his fear after the Knicks' victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. A video of his remarks was posted on Twitter.

The Knicks are scheduled to play the Washington Wizards in London on Jan. 17.

“There is a chance I could get killed out there,” Kanter, a longtime critic of Erdogan, told reporters.

“It’s pretty sad that all the stuff affects my career and basketball because I want to be out there and help my team win."

A Knicks official later said that Kanter was not traveling to London because of a visa issue, the New York Times reported.

Turkey has revoked Kanter's passport, and a Turkish court has declared him a fugitive for his support of U.S-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of orchestrating an attempted coup in July 2016 - an accusation Gulen denies.

Since the putsch attempt, more than 50,000 people have been jailed in Turkey pending trial and 150,000 state workers including teachers, judges and soldiers have been suspended or dismissed in a crackdown on alleged supporters of Gulen.

The Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency reported in December 2017 that a Turkish prosecutor had asked for Kanter to be jailed for up to four years for insulting Erdogan.

Kanter holds a U.S. green card that allows him to live and work in the country on a permanent basis.

Ulysses Lee 'Junior' Bridgeman, a former US basketball player who became a fast-food mogul, is in the lead to acquire Sports Illustrated magazine from US media company Meredith Corp for about $150 million, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The deal would be the result of a review that Meredith is carrying out in its portfolio, following its $1.84 billion acquisition of Time Inc last year. It has already sold off its Time and Fortune magazines and is exploring a sale of Money Magazine.

Bridgeman is in the final stages of negotiating a deal for Sports Illustrated after lining up acquisition financing, the sources added. If his effort is successful, a deal announcement could come by the end of the year, according to the sources.

One aspect of the deal still being hashed out in the negotiations is the outsourcing agreements related to printing and paper costs of the magazine, one of the sources said. These discussions are common when a buyer who does not own a media company purchases a magazine, the source added.

For example, when Marc and Lynne Benioff bought Time magazine for $190 million in cash in September, Meredith entered into a multiyear agreement with them to provide services such as subscription fulfilment, paper purchasing and printing.

The sources asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential. Bridgeman and Meredith declined to comment. Sports Illustrated did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Bridgeman purchase of Sports Illustrated would be the latest example of a wealthy individual taking over a storied media brand that has declined in profitability and influence since its peak years.

Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post in 2013 for $250 million. Earlier this year, Marc Benioff, founder of Salesforce.com, bought Time Magazine from Meredith for $190 million. Chatchaval Jiaravanon, a Thai businessman, bought Fortune for $150 million.

Meredith, which owns lifestyle magazines such as Better Homes & Gardens and Family Circle, also said it would cut more than 1,000 jobs in the wake of the merger. The sale of Sports Illustrated would further Meredith`s push to streamline its business by shedding brands that have less appeal to its core readership, which is predominantly female.

First published in 1954, Sports Illustrated is a US magazine brand best known for its annual swimsuit issue. It has nearly 3 million subscribers but has been scaling back in recent years, reducing its print edition to 24 issues annually, in the face of pressure from online media.

With its roots in traditional publishing, Meredith has been facing a fierce competitive online race against internet giants such as Alphabet Inc’s Google and Facebook Inc for consumer eyeballs and advertising dollars.

Bridgeman played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Clippers during his career with the National Basketball Association, which ran from 1975 to 1987. He later began acquiring Chili`s and Wendy`s restaurant franchises, which he sold for $400 million in 2016.

The New York Post reported in October that 'there is buzz' that Bridgeman was closing in on a deal to buy Sports Illustrated from Meredith.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant wins Oscar for best animated short

Completing a third consecutive unbeaten run to Olympic gold, the United States captured a sixth Games title with NBA talent in seven tries by routing Serbia 96-66 in yesterday's final.

Kevin Durant scored 30 points while DeMarcus Cousins added 13 points and 15 rebounds as the US squad cruised to a 15th overall men's basketball gold medal, every US player scoring in the romp that decided the last gold medal in Rio.

The Americans stretched their Olympic win streak to 25 games and overall decade-long winning run to 76 games.

US forward Carmelo Anthony became the first man to win three Olympic basketball gold medals. He was on the 2004 team that settled for bronze but returned for 2008 and 2012 triumphs, although he has no plans to play in 2020 at Tokyo.

"It was a special moment for me," Anthony said of winning his third gold. "I know this is the end. This is it for me. I committed to this in '04. I've seen the worst and I've seen the best. I'm here today three gold medals later."

It was the farewell game for US coach Mike Krzyzewski, who will be replaced by San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

A Serbian team that tested the US squad before falling 94-91 in a group stage game - the closest call in the Americans' Olympic win streak - stayed close for barely a quarter before the NBA playmakers began going wild.

Serbia led 14-11 with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter when the Americans, who opened the game shooting only 5-of-17 from the floor, began what would become a 32-8 run to break open the contest.

Durant had 14 points in the pivotal spurt, including a spectacular steal and fast break slam dunk that brought the loudest roar from USA fans.

For the game, Durant shot 10-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range.

Durant, who scored 18 of his 24 first-half points in the second quarter, joins the NBA Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors next season after their record-setting 73-win 2015-16 campaign.

Cousins had 11 points and 12 rebounds in the first half, which ended with the Americans ahead 52-29 and playing like the flamboyant side most expected to see once the roster was named.

In the second half, it was only a matter of settling the final margin and seeing some highlight-reel US moves, notably an alley-oop slam dunk by DeMar DeRozan early in the fourth quarter.

Durant and Anthony hugged late in the fourth quarter with the result long decided. The two were the only players back from the 2012 squad, their 10 teammates all Olympic first-timers.

At the finish, the Americans were dancing at mid-court in celebration.

Nemanja Nedovic led Serbia with 14 points.

Spain, which lost to the US team in the past two Olympic finals, edged Australia 89-88 in the bronze medal game.

After NBA Legend AC Green, Satnam Singh became United Basketball Alliance`s (UBA) biggest catch in Season 5.

Green, Director of Sport at the UBA of India, announced the signing of Satnam Singh, who two years ago became the first Indian-national to be drafted into the NBA, as one of the key members this season.

With this signing, UBA continues to reaffirm its commitment towards the growth of Indian basketball by giving the players an opportunity to play at the highest level.

Satnam made history when he was drafted in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks with the 52nd overall pick.

The 7`2" hoopster from Punjab played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA`s Summer League and spent two years with the Texas Legends, a G-League affiliate of the Mavericks. Satnam was awarded a scholarship in the USA at the IMG Academy Florida in 2010 and spent the next five years honing his talent to a level worthy of being drafted in the NBA. His inspirational life story was the subject of a documentary "One in a Billion".

Praising Satnam`s game Green stated, "I watched Satnam play in the NBA during his time in the United States while I was working with the Los Angeles Lakers. We are happy that Satnam has the opportunity to play in India in front of his friends, family, and fans in the upcoming UBA Season 5.

"Hailing from Ballo Ke village in Punjab, Satnam was just nine years old and almost six feet tall when he arrived at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy to train under the tutelage of India`s legendary coach Dr. Subramanian. It was a dream of coach Subramanian to see a professional basketball league in India. Now with UBA, his dream has come true and his students who have grown into stars for India are also getting an opportunity to play at the highest level in the country.

Talking about his association with UBA and his desire to take basketball in India to the next level, Satnam said, "I want to play an active role in the journey to take Indian basketball to the next level. I`m very excited to play in the UBA along with the best players from India and abroad. I`ve been working for an opportunity to show what I can do and this will be the perfect stage for me to compete at the highest level in front of my fans in India. UBA also gives me an opportunity to work on my game and see the love for basketball grow in this country. I`m indebted to my first coach Dr. Subramanian, without whom none of this would have been possible."

Satnam had few opportunities to play for India over the years due to his training commitments and constraints in the United States. Now at the age of 21, this will be the first time Satnam will play in front of Indian fans when he makes his UBA debut this season.

Trump’s remarks rankled black athletes in the NBA and NFL. His disinvitation of Curry, who is black, sounded a racial dog-whistle to those who believe African-Americans do not belong in the White House.

Trump’s subsequent Twitter statements about the NFL suggest deeply troubling assumptions about the proper place of black athletes in public spaces.

The history of White House visits

The invitation of athletes to the White House appears apolitical. Presidents have customarily extended invitations to everyone from Little League World Series to Super Bowl winners. However, tradition has also always been intertwined with America’s racial politics.

Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series winners have regularly visited the White House since the 1920s before black athletes broke the colour line (they were excluded from playing in the league at the time).

The first NBA team to visit the White House was the Boston Celtics in 1963, invited by then-president John F. Kennedy. The 1960s Celtics represented white America in the face of an increasingly African-American league.

White House visits seem innocuous, but they are political spectacles, with handshakes, photos and memorabilia exchanges. When athletes meet the president, they are used as vehicles to promote specific policies.

In the waning years of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan used these visits to symbolise American power, vigour and confidence through athletic achievement. In 1988, for example, Reagan tossed a tight spiral to visiting NFL wide receiver Ricky Sanders. Cameras caught this moment and transformed the president into a game-winning quarterback.

Not all athletes appreciate being used as a tool for policy. Increasingly, they have rejected invitations to the White House to express their discontent. The boycotts by whole teams like Curry’s Golden State Warriors, however, is a new kind of demonstration made even more powerful by the fame of their top players.

A few days after the NBA finals concluded, Curry promised to avoid the White House. His teammates have been effusive in their support of his stance. Coach Steve Kerr said, “he [Trump] was going to break up with us before we could break up with him”.

The team also released a statement:

In lieu of a visit to the White House, we have decided that we’ll constructively use our trip to the nation’s capital in February to celebrate equality, diversity, and inclusion – the values that we embrace as an organisation.

Trump’s comments have had the unintended effect of galvanising support of the whole league behind the Warriors. NBA players have taken to Twitter to openly mock him. The NBA’s biggest star, LeBron James, tweeted:

×

Alluding to the investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties with Russia, Robin Lopez tweeted:

Teeming player protests

But Trump’s words have now shifted the debate onto him, added legitimacy to the demonstrations, and perhaps roused a force powerful enough to battle his own celebrity brand. Trump has taken on the NFL before and lost.

The NFL players’ union and the NFL commissioner – two sides usually at loggerheads – expressed joint anger over Trump’s intervention in the league’s affairs. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell lamented Trump’s “lack of respect” for the league. And the head of the union, DeMaurice Smith, defiantly thundered that the NFL Players Association would:

… never back down when it comes to protecting the constitutional rights of our players as citizens.

The national anthem protests, which initially divided the league and the public, have become ubiquitous. On Sunday afternoon, whole teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, remained in their locker rooms in a forceful rejection of Trump’s remarks. The Ravens and the Jaguars, playing in London, knelt for the American national anthem but stood respectfully for “God Save the Queen”.

The kneeling players have been joined by team owners, performers and cheerleaders. The protest even spread to the more conservative and white MLB, when the Oakland A’s Bruce Maxwell became the first player to kneel during the national anthem.

Trump’s ill-timed comments have given legitimacy to claims of his racial animus. Until he disavows them, we can expect to see more players signalling their disapproval of his presidency.

The growing protests are a healthy new development for American sports. War of words going on between prominent US sportspersons and US President Donald Trump, as he continued his racial comments on public forum

US President Donald Trump is continuing his public attacks on prominent black athletes. Late last week, he urged National Football League (NFL) team owners to fire players who knelt in protest during the playing of the national anthem before the game. “Get that son of a bitch off the field,” Trump told a partisan crowd in the conservative state of Alabama. The next day, he disinvited National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Steph Curry from the White House. Why the US sports stars are not standing up during the national anthem

Anthony Davis scored a record 52 points on his home court as the West team continued their domination by outgunning the East 192-182 in the 66th annual NBA All-Star Game.

The New Orleans Pelicans star Davis was named MVP and broke the scoring record of 42 points set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962. He made 26 of 39 shots from the field, eclipsing Blake Griffin's 2014 record of 19 field goals in an All-Star game.

"I was shocked," Davis said. "I am just happy I was able to take the MVP home in front of home fans.

"The guys said they were going to give me the ball. They were men of their word.

"It was fun game. I didn't want anybody to get hurt."

Defense was non-existent at the Smoothie King Center arena as Davis set the tone with 22 first-half points and Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook combined on a couple of playful passing exchanges including one in the opening quarter with former teammate Kevin Durant.

The teams combined for 374 points and it was the second straight year the teams broke the combined record. Last year, the teams set a record of 369 in the West's 196-173 win.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the league should look at inducements to get the players to try harder.

"I would like to see it more competitive. It'd be good to have incentives for the guys, get charities involved," Kerr said of the lack of defense.

The East was led by Milwaukee Bucks center Giannis Antetokounmpo, who scored 28 points, and Cleveland's LeBron James, making his 13th All-Star start, with 23 points.

Westbrook tallied 41 points as he was reunited for one night with Durant, who is in his first season with the Golden State Warriors after leaving the Thunder.

Halfway through the first quarter, Westbrook and Durant ran across midcourt on either side of the key. Westbrook flicked a pass to Durant on the left side. Durant tossed it right back to Westbrook on a give-and-go that resulted in an easy layup and a 31-28 West lead.

The East led 53-48 after 12 minutes -- the 101 combined points was an All-Star Game record for a quarter -- and the West took a 97-92 halftime lead.

The 189 first-half points broke the All-Star record of 187 points set in the first half last year with the West leading 104-83.

"We had fun and hopefully we put on a show," New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony said.

NBA All-star game: Anthony Davis' record 52 points spurs West to outgun East

Former National Basketball association (NBA) star Dennis Rodman was charged with hit and run, and property damage on Monday for driving the wrong way on a freeway and causing a car crash, police said.

Rodman was charged with misdemeanor counts of hit and run with property damage, driving a motor vehicle across a divide, giving false information to a police officer and driving without a valid license.

If convicted on all charges, the five-time NBA champion and seven-time NBA rebound champion faces a maximum of two years in county jail.

Rodman, 55, will be arraigned on January 20, 2017.

Police say that in the early morning hours of July 20, Rodman drove a sport utility vehicle north in the southbound carpool lane of Interstate 5 in Santa Ana and drove head-on toward a sedan, causing the driver of that vehicle to swerve into a dividing wall to avoid a collision with Rodman's vehicle.

Police say Rodman did not exchange information with the other driver and fled the scene before police arrived.

Rodman became best known for his outrageous behavior and appearance -- tattoos, body piercings and dyed hair among his trademarks -- during an NBA career that lasted from 1986 to 2000, including titles with Detroit in 1989 and 1990 and alongside Michael Jordan with the Chicago Bulls from 1996-1998.

Rodman was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011 and finished his NBA career with 6,683 points, 11,954 rebounds and 1,600 assists.

After his NBA career, Rodman played in Mexico, Britain, Finland and the Philippines. He promoted gambling websites, vodka and backed US President-elect Donald Trump's bid for the White House, having appeared with him on the television show Celebrity Apprentice.

Rodman also made three notable visits to North Korea within 12 months in 2013 and early 2014, meeting leader Kim Jong-un and bringing a team of ex-NBA players for exhibition games against North Korea's national team, one on Kim's birthday.

Basketball: Retired five-time champion Rodman charged in hit-and-run

LeBron James has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which will likely make him the highest-paid player in the National Basketball Association.

"I just want to let you all know I'm re-signing back with the Cleveland Cavaliers, my hometown team," James said on his multi-media website Uninterrupted. "I can't be more excited than this opportunity once again, man, to defend our crown, defend our title... just get the band back together."

James, a three-time NBA champion, did not release details of the contract but US sports broadcaster ESPN reported that it was worth $100 million and would pay him $31 million in the first year and $33 million in the second, making him the league's highest-paid player for the first time in his career.

James has signed a pair of one-year deals with the Cavaliers over the past few years. He chose to go with a longer term deal in Cleveland, his hometown, because of the Cavs' success.

"We all know last year (was) magical, inspiring, all the words you can come up with. It was an unbelievable season," said the Cavaliers' all-time leading scorer. "I just can't wait to get the group back together, the team, the franchise, more importantly, get everybody together. We all know last year as a magical, inspiring, all the words you can come up with, it was an unbelievable season. I just can't wait to get the group back together." The 31-year-old James, a four-time NBA most valuable player, won two championships for the Miami Heat before returning to the Cavaliers in 2014, leading them to the NBA finals where they lost to the Golden State Warriors. The Cavaliers reversed that result this season, bringing the first professional sports championship to the Ohio city since 1964. (Reuters)

San Antonio Spurs star power forward Tim Duncan, one of the best players in NBA history, announced his retirement on Monday, ending a brilliant 19-season career that included five league titles.

The 40-year-old Duncan, who was selected as the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, spent his entire career with the Spurs -- an anomaly in a league where players often change teams.

The Spurs reached the playoffs in every one of his 19 seasons.

"Tim Duncan is one of the most dominant players in NBA history," National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver said, adding that Duncan's "understated selflessness made him the ultimate teammate."

"For two decades Tim represented the Spurs, the city of San Antonio and the league with passion and class."

Duncan, together with Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, formed one of the most successful trios in NBA history. They hold the league record for regular season wins (575) and postseason wins (126).

Duncan and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich also formed a dynamic duo, accounting for the most wins ever by a player-coach duo at 1,001.

Duncan, a three-time NBA Finals MVP and a two-time regular season MVP, led San Antonio to titles in 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2014.

The Spurs posted a 1,072-438 regular-season record since drafting Duncan -- the best 19-year run in league history.

News about Duncan quickly began trending on Twitter, with the hashtag #ThankYouTD taking hold.

"Nineteen seasons. Five rings. One team. #ThankYouTD," the Spurs tweeted on Monday.

He averaged 19 points and 10.8 rebounds per game during his career. But last season's campaign was disrupted by a knee injury and he played in only 61 games.

San Antonio was eliminated in the playoffs this past season by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Duncan's final game was a 113-99 loss to the Thunder in game six of the Western Conference semi-finals on May 12. In his career finale, he scored 19 points, with five rebounds and a block as he played the entire fourth quarter without a rest.

Talk of retirement

At the end of June, Duncan had exercised a $6.4 million player option for next season, but talk of retirement loomed large.

Spanish star Pau Gasol, who during his career has played power forward and center, has reportedly agreed to join San Antonio on a two-year deal worth $30 million, after spending the last two seasons with the Chicago Bulls -- and it now looks like he will help fill the void left by Duncan.

Ginobili, 38, has said he plans to take his time in deciding about playing a 15th season for the Spurs for $2.9 million next season.

He was emotional about Duncan's departure.

"Even tho I knew it was coming, I'm still moved by the news. What a HUGE honor to have played with him for 14 seasons! #ThankYouTD," Ginobili said on Twitter.

Parker said: "Greatest Power Forward Ever! It was an honor to play with you !! #spursfamily."

Kobe Bryant who like Duncan won five league titles over a two-decade career with the same team, the Los Angeles Lakers, before retiring tweeted: "Congrats TD #19yrs #GoSpursGo."

Bryant, who played 20 seasons with the Lakers before also retiring at the end of this past season, is the only player to have played longer with one team.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry admired Duncan for the way he carried himself.

"The end of an era. Thanks 4 everything you did for the game! A Winner, and you Did it your way. Congrats, Tim!"

Five-time NBA champion Tim Duncan retires after 19 seasons

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, whose father was murdered by a violent Islamic group in 1984, has made a passionate plea for stronger background checks on US gun purchases.

Kerr spoke on Friday on a podcast by San Jose Mercury News sports columnist Tim Kawakami about the Warriors` loss to Cleveland in the NBA Finals then took the conversation into politics.

"Our government is insane," Kerr said, for failing to pass gun control legislation.

Democratic members of the House of Representatives staged a 24-hour sit-in Wednesday and Thursday to protest the inability to even have a vote on gun restriction proposals.

Kerr`s father, Malcolm, was the president of the American University of Beirut.

He was gunned down in the hallway outside his office in 1984 while his son was a freshman basketball standout at the University of Arizona.

"When 90 per cent of our country wants background checks on gun purchases and we've got our Senate and our House not only voting it
down but using the Bill of Rights as a reason for people to have rights to carry these automatic weapons, and we`re getting people murdered every day at an alarming rate -- I just have to get this off my chest -- our government is insane. We are insane."

Kerr's call for arms control came two weeks after a terror attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left 49 dead and 53 others wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in US history, a massacre that came the night before Kerr`s Warriors lost game five of the NBA Finals on their way to squandering a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, the worst collapse in finals history.

"What bugs me is this adherence to the right to bear arms," Kerr said. "That was back in 1776. People didn`t own automatic rifles.

"You had to have a musket in case the Redcoats were coming, the British were coming. And the beautiful thing about the Constitution is they left open amendments to change things because things change over time.

"I kind of think that our forefathers would not have OK`d automatic weapons to be sold to everybody if they existed back then. Let`s have some checks. It`s easier to get a gun than it is to get a driver`s license. It`s insane.

"And as somebody who`s had a family member shot and killed, it devastates me every time I read about this stuff -- like what happened in
Orlando -- and then it`s even more devastating to see the government just cowing to the NRA (National Rifle Association) and going to this totally outdated Bill Of Rights, right to bear arms."

Kerr, who spent much of his youth overseas, called for political change to toss out those who back the NRA`s desire to avoid any limits on gun ownership.

"If you want to own a musket, fine, you know, but come on. The rest of the world thinks we`re insane. We are insane," Kerr said.

"And until we vote these senators and congressmen and women out of office, the same thing is going to happen. And it`s infuriating."

Kerr wondered how US lawmakers might react if their family members were at greater risk of being slain in mass shootings.

"You wonder if any of these senators and congressmen and women who are so opposed to even holding a vote on not only the right to
buy an automatic weapon but just the background checks and the lists and all the stuff, how would they feel about this if their own child, their own mother, their own father, sister, brother, wife, husband was murdered. Mass murdered," Kerr said.

"How many times do we have to go through this before our government actually does something about it?"

NBA: Warriors coach Kerr makes emotional gun control plea

LeBron James reportedly joined an NBA All-Star lineup of talent Thursday that will not play for the United States at the Rio Olympics, while Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant will try to bring the Americans a third consecutive gold medal.

A flurry of reports ahead of next week's announcement of the final US roster for Brazil was topped when Cleveland.com said James has told USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo and coach Mike Krzyzewski that he will not play in August.

"I could use the rest," James told the website.

James, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the greatest-ever NBA Finals comeback to dethrone the Golden State Warriors, cited the grind of having logged so much court time through six consecutive trips to the finals.

NBA Most Valuable Player and scoring leader Stephen Curry of Golden State said during the finals that he would not play in Rio.

Star guards Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City, Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and James Harden of Houston also have backed out of consideration, as have San Antonio forward LaMarcus Aldridge, Washington forward John Wall, Clippers forward Blake Griffin and Anthony Davis of New Orleans.

Joining that group Thursday were Portland's Damian Lillard, who wants to rehabilitate a plantar fascitis injury; Utah forward Gordon Hayward and San Antonio forward Kawhi Leonard.

The pullout brings back memories of 2004, when security worries were a concern in the Athens run-up and many top names withdrew. Those who played could only muster bronze.

The roster to be named next week by USA Basketball is expected to include Oklahoma City star Durant and New York playmaker Anthony plus Indiana's Paul George, Golden State's Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins, Chicagos Jimmy Butler, the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan, and Toronto's Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. Two other available spots could include Cleveland star guard Kyrie Irving, who played a key role alongside James in bringing the first sports title to Cleveland since 1964.

A source told the website a desire to rest his body from the title run to better prepare his bid to defend the crown was his only reason for not playing in Rio, the Zika virus not playing a role in his decision.

James, 31, sparked the US squad of NBA stars to gold medals at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. He is the US team's all-time scoring leader with 273 points and second in total rebounds with 95.

He was also a reserve on the 2004 US team that settled for bronze at Athens and on the US team that finished third at the 2010 world championships in Japan.

"King" James is one of three men to play on three Olympic basketball teams and in 2012, he became one of the select few to win an NBA crown and Olympic gold in the same year.

LeBron out, Carmelo in for US team at Rio Olympics

LeBron James ensured his place among the NBA's all-time legends by leading the Cleveland Cavaliers in the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history and has made a solid case for being considered the greatest player ever.

The 31-year-old forward scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and passed out 11 assists to power Cleveland's 93-89 victory over defending champions Golden State Warriors in game seven of the NBA Finals.

With size, strength and speed that enable him to muscle his way to the hoop and finesse as a passer to make teammates a threat from anywhere on the court, James has made himself the dominant player of his era, reaching the NBA Finals six years in a row.

Michael Jordan pushed the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles in the 1990s with remarkable athletic skill and determination, setting the "best ever" standard for many fans over such icons as Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Boston Celtics 1960s big man Bill Russell won a record 11 NBA titles in an era of domination no team is likely to repeat, while Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal both excelled but often with help, sometimes from each other.

But James unleashed a magical comeback in the past week unseen in the NBA's 70-year history.

No team had ever rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win the best-of-seven NBA Finals until he lifted the Cavaliers to deliver the NBA's greatest shocker, ending his city's 52-year wait for a major sports title.

In the process, James matched Johnson, O'Neal and Tim Duncan as three-time NBA Finals' most valuable players.

"You put everything into the game. The game always gives back to people that are true to the game," James said. "I know the history of the game and I was just confident and calm."

The Cavaliers ousted an ultimate foe that won a record 73 regular-season games and boasted the NBA's current top scorer and two-time most valuable player in Stephen Curry.

James was an unprecedented leader in every major finals statistical area, averaging 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.3 blocked shots a game. James flagged off jubilations that continued on Monday when he and the team landed at the Cleveland airport, displaying the championship trophy to more than 20,000 wellwishers. The party is set to continue Wednesday with a victory parade.

Overwhelmed by emotion in the moments after the title was decided revived memories of Jordan's tearful finish at the 1996 final. Both came on Father`s Day and for Jordan it was the first title since his father's death in 1993.

Comparisons with Jordan are apt as he and James may be the central players in the "greatest ever" argument for their versatility and success. Both made spectacular dunks and stunning shots in their younger days before learning to trust teammates as they got older, spreading the ball among talented role players to make their teams even more dangerous.

While James was only seconds away from becoming the first NBA most valuable player to lose five finals, he instead improved to 3-4 in the championship series, having gone 2-2 during four seasons with the Miami Heat. James had the last laugh at naysayers who nagged him all along his quest, posting an Instagram statement Monday beside a photo of him holding the trophy.

"They said u lost a step, wasn't explosive as once was, the best days was in the rear view, questioned your drive, your leadership, your commitment, you don't have killer instinct, going back home is the worst mistake in your career, he got the coach fired, players traded, won't work between him and Kyrie (Irving), Him and Kev (Kevin Love) won't work, love your teammates to much, there's no way he can deliver a championship in his hometown, etc etc etc.. But guess what THATS NONE OF MY BUSINESS Hahahaha!!! Yes sir," he posted.

LeBron: The best ever?

LeBron James powered the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 93-89 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday in an electrifying Game Seven to complete an improbable comeback unlike any seen before. As a result, the Cavs picked up their first NBA championship.

With the win over the top-seeded Warriors, who celebrated a championship win on Cleveland's home court last year, the Cavaliers became the first team to rally from a 3-1 series deficit in the best-of-seven NBA Finals and win the title.

"I've had the goal for two years since I came back to bring a championship to the city," said an emotional James, who returned to the Cavaliers in 2014 after a four-year stint with Miami that included a pair of NBA championships. "I gave it everything that I had. I poured my heart, my blood, my sweat and my tears into this game."

When the final buzzer sounded to end what was the closest game of the Finals, an emotional James dropped to the floor before he was mobbed by his teammates.

James led Cleveland in the championship-clinching win with a triple-double as he recorded 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists en route to being named the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals for a third time.

The win ends decades of heartbreak for the city of Cleveland, which had not won a professional sports championship since the 1964 Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.

For James, the win not only marks his third NBA title, but it will go down as the single greatest achievement of his storied career as it fulfills his promise to deliver a title to his home state of Ohio.

"I came back for a reason. I came back to bring a championship to our city," said James, who was in tears as he wrapped his arms around the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. "I knew what I was capable of doing. I knew what I learned in the last couple years that I was gone, and I knew I had the right ingredients and the right blueprint to help this franchise get back to a place that we've never been."

The back-and-forth game lived up to its billing staying tight throughout. It included 20 lead changes while no team was able to pull ahead by more than eight points.

Facing elimination in each of their previous two games, James carried the Cavs back from the brink as they became only the third team to force a Game Seven after falling behind 3-1 in the championship round.

For the Warriors, who had a record 73 wins during the 82-game regular season, Sunday's defeat marked the first time since November 2013 that they have lost three consecutive games.

"It wasn't easy what we accomplished, and it's not an easy pill to swallow what we didn't accomplish," said two-time league MVP Stephen Curry, who had 17 points in the loss. "So got to just take the good with the bad."

After a record smashing regular season the Warriors could not cap off the campaign with a second successive title, unable to deliver the knockout punch after going up 3-1 in the best-of-season series.

The Warriors were ultimately undone by the disappearance of their high-octane offense, a suspension to defensive stalwart Draymond Green, a season-ending injury to rim-protecting center Andrew Bogut and defensive specialist Andre Iguodala dealing with a balky back.

His 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists make him Most Valuable Player of the finals

I poured my heart, my blood, my sweat and my tears into this game." When the final buzzer sounded to end what was the closest game of the Finals, an emotional James dropped to the floor before he was mobbed by his teammates. I knew what I learned in the last couple years that I was gone, and I knew I had the right ingredients and the right blueprint to help this franchise get back to a place that we've never been." The back-and-forth game lived up to its billing staying tight throughout. "So got to just take the good with the bad." After a record smashing regular season the Warriors could not cap off the campaign with a second successive title, unable to deliver the knockout punch after going up 3-1 in the best-of-season series. The Warriors were ultimately undone by the disappearance of their high-octane offense, a suspension to defensive stalwart Draymond Green, a season-ending injury to rim-protecting center Andrew Bogut and defensive specialist Andre Iguodala dealing with a balky back. "Just an incredible run that obviously didn't end the way we wanted it to," said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. "It's been an incredible two-year run. We're disappointed that it didn't go our way at the end, but that's life." When the Warriors raced out to a 3-1 series lead the Cavs were left for dead by many impartial observers who expected the Golden State to run away with the series. But with their backs against the wall, a Cavaliers team that once seem overmatched never gave up in their quest for a maiden NBA title. "I knew what we were capable of, even being down 3-1 versus the greatest regular season team ever," said James. "Everybody counted us out and that's when we strived the most and that's definitely when I strived the most when everybody counted me out." (Reuters)
