The famed boxer Floyd Mayweather, 44, was filmed refusing to pose for a photo with a teenage lad, ostensibly due to his painted nails.

The event, which occurred after the end of an NBA game in Los Angeles on Saturday, was captured on film by TMZ.

In the video, a male fan approaches Mayweather and requests a photo with him.

"You've got painted nails," the boxing star says, dismissing him. "I don't take photographs with individuals who have painted nails."

Before the youngster switches the camera to selfie mode and states: "Floyd is an outspoken homophobe.You guys were the first to notice it.Floyd refuses to take a picture with me because I have painted nails.Really, bro?"&nbsp;

When contacted by TMZ for comment on Tuesday, Mayweather's attorney flatly refuted any homophobic charges.

According to the representative, the ex-boxer was merely in a rush to get out of the NBA game.

However, eyewitnesses informed the magazine that around the same time, Mayweather was joyfully posing for selfies with other supporters.

'I don’t take pics with guys with painted nails’: Boxer Floyd Mayweather

Boston Celtics games were abruptly pulled from the Chinese internet Thursday after a center on the team, Enes Kanter, said on social media that the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, was a “brutal dictator,” citing his government’s repressive policies in Tibet.

The incident could spell fresh trouble for the NBA in China. The league has millions of devoted fans there but has also just spent two years mending its image in the country after a Houston Rockets executive tweeted support in 2019 for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

That tweet, by Daryl Morey, who now works for the Philadelphia 76ers, was quickly deleted, though not before setting off an uproar in China. Sponsors in the country severed ties and the state-run broadcaster stopped airing games, leading to financial fallout that the league estimated cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.

Geopolitical tensions and rising nationalism have made China a minefield for multinational companies, whose access to the country’s 1.4 billion consumers is often contingent on not taking the “wrong” stance on issues such as Beijing’s rule in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang.

An NBA representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a video that was posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, Kanter spoke into the camera for nearly three minutes and decried what he called a “cultural genocide” in Tibet.

“I say, ‘Shame on the Chinese government,’” he said, wearing a T-shirt with the image of the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing considers a criminal separatist. “The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture.”

Another social media post by Kanter on Wednesday showed off sneakers emblazoned with Tibetan flag motifs and the words “Free Tibet.”

By Thursday, recent Celtics games were marked as unavailable for replay through Tencent, the Chinese internet giant that has partnered with the NBA to stream its games in the country. The website for Tencent Sports also indicated that upcoming Celtics games would not be livestreamed.

Tencent Sports has not been livestreaming games involving the 76ers, either. The team hired Morey last year as president of basketball operations.

A Tencent spokeswoman declined to comment.

On the Chinese social platform Weibo, a Celtics fan account declared that it would immediately stop posting about the team.

The account told its 615,000 Weibo followers: “Resolutely resist any behavior that damages national harmony and the dignity of the motherland!”

China considers Tibet part of its historical empire, although the authorities have long confronted protests against their rule there. The Communist Party under Xi has intensified efforts to defray ethnic tensions by encouraging the region’s residents to assimilate into Chinese society and making Mandarin Chinese the dominant language in public life.

Kanter, who is of Turkish heritage, has been an outspoken critic of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkish prosecutors have sought Kanter’s arrest, and his Turkish passport has been revoked. He has expressed concern that Turkish agents might kill him overseas.

Celtics games are pulled in China after Kanter’s pro-Tibet posts

The National Basketball Association (NBA) player Enes Kanter on Wednesday (October 20) slammed Chinese President Xi Jinping and branded him as a "brutal dictator" over China's treatment of Tibet.&nbsp;

Taking to his social media accounts, the Boston Celtics center Kanter posted a nearly three-minute-long video wearing a T-shirt of the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader. In the&nbsp;caption,&nbsp;Kanter wrote, "Dear Brutal Dictator XI JINPING and the Chinese Government. Tibet belongs to the Tibetan people!"

In the video, Kanter said, "My message to the Chinese government is free Tibet. Tibet belongs to Tibetans. I'm here to add my voice and speak out about what is happening in Tibet. Under the Chinese government's brutal rule, Tibetan people's basic rights and freedoms are non-existent."

"There have been more than 5,000 political prisoners in Tibet the last 25 years. 5,000! Did you know that simply owning a photo of the Dalai Lama in Tibet is grounds for arrest. Even flying the Tibetan national flag could get you arrested. I say shame on the Chinese government. The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture."

China claims that Tibet has long been part of its territory and that the military action was part of a "peaceful liberation" of the region. But human rights campaigners and exiles have accused China of religious repression, torture, forced sterilisation and cultural erosion through forced re-education.

"The cultural genocide in Tibet is so stifling that more than 150 Tibetan people have burned themselves alive, hoping that such a horrific act of sacrifice will raise awareness and attention towards the ongoing abuses within Tibet," the player said.&nbsp;

He also said that he cannot stay "silent" and will stand with Tibetan brothers and sisters as he supports their cause for freedom.&nbsp;

The 29-year-old highlighted the point that the communist ideology of China has been around for only about 100 years, however, the Buddhist civilisation, ideology and philosophy have been around for thousands of years.&nbsp;

"Brutal dictator of China, Xi Jinping, I have a message for you and your henchmen. I will say it again, again and again, loud and clear. I hope you hear me," Kanter further added in the video message.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a news briefing on Thursday (October 21) that Kanter was "trying to get attention" and that his remarks "were not worth refuting". "We will never accept those attacks to discredit Tibet's development and progress," he said.

Kanter posted similar messages on his Instagram feed. On Wednesday, he wore shoes emblazoned with the phrase "Free Tibet' during the game against the New York Knicks made by Baidiucao.&nbsp;

The National Basketball Association (NBA) player Enes Kanter on Wednesday (October 20) slammed Chinese President Xi Jinping and branded him as a "brutal dictator" over China's treatment of Tibet. Taking to his social media accounts, the Boston Celtics center Kanter posted a nearly three-minute-long video wearing a T-shirt of the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader. In the caption, Kanter wrote, "Dear Brutal Dictator XI JINPING and the Chinese Government. Tibet belongs to the Tibetan people!" ALSO READ | EU lawmakers push for closer ties with Taiwan amid rising Chinese pressure In the video, Kanter said, "My message to the Chinese government is free Tibet. Tibet belongs to Tibetans. I'm here to add my voice and speak out about what is happening in Tibet. Under the Chinese government's brutal rule, Tibetan people's basic rights and freedoms are non-existent." "There have been more than 5,000 political prisoners in Tibet the last 25 years. 5,000! Did you know that simply owning a photo of the Dalai Lama in Tibet is grounds for arrest. Even flying the Tibetan national flag could get you arrested. I say shame on the Chinese government. The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture." Watch the video here: Dear Brutal Dictator XI JINPING and the Chinese Government Tibet belongs to the Tibetan people!#FreeTibet pic.twitter.com/To4qWMXK56 — Enes Kanter (@EnesKanter) October 20, 2021 × China claims that Tibet has long been part of its territory and that the military action was part of a "peaceful liberation" of the region. But human rights campaigners and exiles have accused China of religious repression, torture, forced sterilisation and cultural erosion through forced re-education. "The cultural genocide in Tibet is so stifling that more than 150 Tibetan people have burned themselves alive, hoping that such a horrific act of sacrifice will raise awareness and attention towards the ongoing abuses within Tibet," the player said. He also said that he cannot stay "silent" and will stand with Tibetan brothers and sisters as he supports their cause for freedom. × The 29-year-old highlighted the point that the communist ideology of China has been around for only about 100 years, however, the Buddhist civilisation, ideology and philosophy have been around for thousands of years. "Brutal dictator of China, Xi Jinping, I have a message for you and your henchmen. I will say it again, again and again, loud and clear. I hope you hear me," Kanter further added in the video message. Kanter posted similar messages on his Instagram feed. On Wednesday, he wore shoes emblazoned with the phrase "Free Tibet' during the game against the New York Knicks made by Baidiucao. Kyrie Irving, the NBA star who has been indefinitely barred from practicing or playing with the Brooklyn Nets because of his refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccine, spoke out publicly Wednesday night for the first time since the team decided to keep him off the court, saying his refusal was a matter of personal freedom.

"You think I really want to lose money?"&nbsp;Irving, who is set to make about $40 million this season, said on his Instagram feed in a meandering monologue that had incorrect medical information. More than 90% of players in the league are vaccinated, a proportion much higher than in the general population of the United States.

"You think I really want to give up on my dream to go after a championship?"&nbsp;Irving, 29, said. "You think I really just want to give up my job? You think I really want to sit at home?"

On Tuesday, the Nets said they had barred Irving from playing until he becomes "eligible to be a full participant." New York City requires most teenagers and adults to have at least one vaccination shot to enter facilities such as sports arenas, and Irving has not practiced with the Nets in Brooklyn. Irving joined the Nets in 2019 as they built a team of superstars that include Kevin Durant and James Harden.

Irving asked that his decision to remain unvaccinated be respected and said that he has no plans to retire. He couched his refusal to get vaccinated in his opposition to mandates, saying nobody should be “forced” to do it.

Irving falsely claimed his decision to remain unvaccinated does not harm other people. The highly contagious delta variant has quickly spread in areas with low vaccination rates. And hospitals in those areas have been overrun with unvaccinated patients, leaving few beds and staff members to treat other patients.

"The LAPD conducts very thorough 'use of force' investigations which typically requires the police officers to interview multiple witnesses and analyse significant amount of forensic evidence. We are still at an early stage of investigation, which can often take upto a year to complete," said Captain Stacy Spell, commanding officer of the media relations division of LAPD, in a video released by the department.

The 21-year-old basketball player was arrested for resisting arrest. However, minor injuries on him were evaluated by a hospital.&nbsp;

The incident comes a year after the infamous killing of George Floyd. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, when Derek Chauvin pressed his knee against his neck for up to 9 and a half minutes over suspicion of a counterfeit $20 bill. The streets of U.S. cities filled with protesters demanding an end to police killings, in the largest mass movement for civil rights in a generation.

Chauvin was later convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter and was expelled from the police force and sentenced to 22 and a half years in jail.&nbsp;

However, similar scenes were witnessed during Jaxson Hayes' arrest. The 15-minute long video showed how the NBA player was gasping for breath and kept saying "I can't breathe". In the video, Hayes' arms and shirt showed specks of blood.

Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine was given the all-clear to travel to Tokyo for the Olympics on Wednesday after being placed into Covid-19 safety protocols this week.

The 26-year-old, who played in all four of the United States' recent exhibition matches in Las Vegas, averaging 10.8 points and 2.5 rebounds, was sidelined on Monday.

USA Basketball said at the time he did not travel with the three-time defending champions to Japan "out of an abundance of caution" after starting Covid-19 health and safety measures.

But it did not say if he contracted the virus or was being kept back for contact tracing.

"US Olympic men's basketball team member Zach LaVine has cleared USA Basketball's health and safety protocols and will join the USA team in Tokyo Thursday afternoon," USA Basketball said in a statement Wednesday, without giving further details.

The US squad has already lost Washington guard Bradley Beal after he was placed into Covid-19 protocols, and center Kevin Love to a calf injury.

The Americans added Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee and San Antonio Spurs guard Keldon Johnson to replace Beal and Love.

The US squad, which opens its Olympic campaign on Sunday against France, is set to add three more players in coming days following the conclusion of the NBA Finals -- Phoenix guard Devin Booker and Milwaukee's Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points in an astonishing all-around execution and the Milwaukee Bucks won their first NBA title since 1971 by crushing the Phoenix Suns 105-98.

NBA Finals: Giannis Antetokounmpo's 50 power Milwaukee Bucks to end 50-year title drought

In what was yet another fitting game for a Finals series, the stars from Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns descended on the floor in Phoenix for Game 5 on Saturday night. But Devin Booker’s 40-point game wasn’t enough as the Suns were handed a 123-119 loss by Bucks, and the series tipped in favour of Bucks 3-2.

In what was a roller-coaster of a game, the Suns took a 16-point lead in the first quarter to eventually see the Bucks erase that and take lead going into halftime. Bucks outscored Suns in the middle two quarters 79-53, effectively handing a 10-point cushion to the visitors going into the last.

The headliner of the game though came only with 17 seconds left. Suns were down by a point with the game online. Jrue Holiday stripped the in-form Booker to toss the ball for Giannis Antetokounmpo to finish a highlight-reel-worthy alley-oop.

This was the first time this postseason that the Suns did not win after leading by double digits. They were 13-0 prior to Game 5. Booker also got his name up against a tough stat to live with; becoming the first player in Finals history to lose back-to-back games despite scoring 40+ points in both games. Chris Paul (21 pts) and Deandre Ayton (20 pts) combine couldn’t help the Suns cross the line.

The Bucks’ Big 3 got together when it mattered the most. Giannis Antetokounmpo (32 pts), Khris Middleton (29 pts), and Jrue Holiday (27 pts) combined for 88 points becoming the fifth trio in NBA Finals history to each score 25 points on 50 per cent shooting.

Antetokounmpo was happy with the team effort that handed them the crucial home-court advantage going into Game 6. “We kept our composure down 16 and we kept fighting,” said Antetokounmpo. “This is the NBA Finals, so you got to give everything you got and that’s what the team did tonight.”

Booker was stoic while talking about the 16-point lead that the Suns gave away. “We came out and did what we intended to do, get off to a great start, and we let it go,” said Booker. “They stayed resilient and they kept playing through. Tough loss for us.”

The series moves back to the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee for Game 6. But going by the last two games that have been decided by six points or less, it would be interesting how Suns respond to the pressure of having to win the remaining games to win the championship. Bucks would look the end bring their first title in 50 years on Wednesday.

NBA Finals: Milwaukee Bucks outlast Phoenix Suns in Game 5 thriller to take a 3-2 lead

The Milwaukee Bucks took a big win against Phoenix Suns in Game 3 to fight their way back into the NBA Finals. The home team would look to replicate that performance even as Suns look to get their act together in Game 4 on Wednesday night (Thursday morning IST).

Giannis Antetokounmpo has stamped his authority of being the most dominant player in the series and the two back-to-back 40-point games may just be the wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee moment Bucks needed. The Greek star is finally flexing every muscle of his body to beat Suns in size.

“He’s doing whatever it takes,” said Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer. “He does a lot and we need a lot from him.” Antetokounmpo has averaged 34.3 points, 14 rebounds, and shot 62% in the series so far, and Bucks couldn’t have asked for a better time to peak for their superstar. Antetokounmpo became the second player in league history to tally 100-plus points and 40-plus rebounds over his first three career Finals games, according to Elias Sports.

But Antetokounmpo still believes his best is yet to come. “I believe that year by year if I’m healthy and I keep working hard, by the grace of God, I’m going to keep getting better as a player,” said Antetokounmpo. “I’m going to be more effective. I’m going to be able to read the plays better. I’m going to be more mature.”

Chris Paul is painfully aware that they need to stop Antetokounmpo from having another highlight game. “We’re going to keep trying to build a wall. He’s coming full speed every play, like a running back coming downhill,” said Paul. “We try to get in his way but he’s able to do get past because he’s surrounded by some really good players. We’re just going to stick with our game plan and see what we can do.”

The two-time MVP knows how to run through the ‘Wall’. “I started seeing the wall, two years ago. Now, it’s about trust. And it's kind of hard, because you want to be effective, you want to get downhill, you want to do everything, but now you also – and you take it personally,” said Antetokounmpo. “I was always a capable passer before the wall was created, which is funny that there’s a defense out there called the Giannis Wall.”

The wall or not, at the back of his tremendous run, Antetokounmpo has climbed to the top in the NBA Finals MVP Ladder. Though his eyes are focused on the larger prize, that of bringing the first NBA title for the Bucks in 50 years and Game 4 will give a clue which way the series is headed.

The Suns will retain home-court advantage even if they lose Game 4, but taking a game in Milwaukee would boost their Championship hopes tenfold and give them a chance to put their hands on the Larry O’Brien at their home-court.

We’re just going to stick with our game plan and see what we can do.” The two-time MVP knows how to run through the ‘Wall’. “I started seeing the wall, two years ago. Now, it’s about trust. And it's kind of hard, because you want to be effective, you want to get downhill, you want to do everything, but now you also – and you take it personally,” said Antetokounmpo. “I was always a capable passer before the wall was created, which is funny that there’s a defense out there called the Giannis Wall.” The wall or not, at the back of his tremendous run, Antetokounmpo has climbed to the top in the NBA Finals MVP Ladder. NBA Finals: Bucks look to climb over ‘Giannis Wall’ to make it even-stevens

The Milwaukee Bucks’ 47-year wait to enter the NBA Finals ended this season. But if they want to achieve what they haven’t in 50 years, to win the Championship, they will need to register their first win in an NBA Finals since May 10, 1974.

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has led this team all year and is aware of the historic stakes of this series. He is excited to bring Finals basketball back to the city of Milwaukee, “It's going to be fun. We know playing in the NBA Finals in front of the fans that have supported us all year long, and it's been (almost) 50 years since we played one here in Milwaukee.”

The Bucks have a 7-1 record at home in the postseason. And they would look to maintain that as the series arrives to Cream City. But coming to the Fiserv Forum is a Suns team that was 24-12 on road in the regular season and has gone 6-2 in the postseason.

The Suns have a cushion of two wins. But the challenge of going on the road is something that Chris Paul and his band of young boys will keep in mind. Paul isn’t ready taking comfort in a 2-0 lead, especially as Game 3 is in Milwaukee, “For us, the biggest game of the year is tomorrow. It's a must-win game for us,” said. Paul. “We know that they're home, they're more comfortable, they will be in front of their fans but have got to be us and we have got to be the hungrier team.”

The Bucks will be hoping for their stars to align. Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday will have to supplement Antetokounmpo and his production if they have to overcome the Suns’ team-oriented play. Perhaps the home crowd will be the nitro boost Bucks need to race away in the game.

No team in the NBA has overcome a 3-0 deficit, so the Bucks are already playing with their season on the line against a Suns team that closed out all three of its series in the NBA Playoffs in its opponent’s building.

Game 3 will take place on Monday (5:30 IST) and will be available on Disney+Hotstar, Star Sports Select, and NBA League Pass.

NBA Finals: Bucks search for their first win as Suns look to go one step closer

“It’s not over until it’s over”, said the former NBA All-Star Baron Davis after the Phoenix Suns took Game 2 of the NBA Finals with a 118-108 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at the Phoenix Suns Arena on Thursday night. Devin Booker led the way with a 31-point performance, while young forward Mikal Bridges put up a postseason-high 27 points.

Booker certainly echoed the sentiment shared by Baron Davis after the game. “It’s a 0-0 mindset for us going into Game 3,” Booker said. “It’s a Game 7 for us. Every game is a Game 7 at this point of the season. We’re locked in.”

All the starters for the Suns scored double digits, with Booker and Bridges leading the way. Chris Paul added 23 points, Jae Crowder 11 and DeAndre Ayton had 10. Game 2's highlight reel was owned by the Suns through a 12-pass possession that ended with Ayton closing it with a layup and getting a foul late in the second quarter. The Bucks’ defensive rotation was tight on that play but the passing from the Suns involving every player touching the ball twice at least was a masterclass in ball movement.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had an impressive night with 42 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Antetokounmpo (20 points in the 3rd quarter of Game 2) became the 4th player to score 20+ points in an NBA Finals quarter over the last 50 seasons. The other three being Michael Jordan (1993 Finals), Isiah Thomas (1988 &amp; 1990 Finals) and Joe Dumars (1989 Finals).

However, the monster-night wasn’t enough as the Bucks fell to a 0-2 deficit in the series. Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday went 12-of-37 in the game when Antetokounmpo got 15 on 22. However, coach Budenholzer appreciated the defensive value that Middleton and Holiday bring regardless of their offensive performance.

“You always give credit to the defense,” Budenholzer said. “Those guys do a good job. There’s probably a few looks that they’ve got to go in, and I think they just keep working and they’ll be good.”

Only four teams in NBA history have lost an NBA Finals series after being up 2-0. The Suns will want to avoid becoming the fifth team on this list. As the series moves to Milwaukee, Bucks will look to repeat their Eastern Conference semifinals performance when they were down 0-2 on the road and then went on to win the series against Brooklyn Nets. Game 3 at the Fiserv Forum on Sunday night (Monday morning IST) could just be the start of that.

Phoenix Suns beat Milwaukee Bucks to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals

Devin Booker scored 31 points and Chris Paul added 23 on Thursday to spark Phoenix over Milwaukee 118-108 and give the Suns a commanding lead in the NBA Finals.

Phoenix's Mikal Bridges scored a playoff career-high&nbsp;27 points for the Suns, who seized a 2-0 edge in the best-of-seven series, which shifts to Milwaukee for games three and four on Sunday and Wednesday.

"It's a 0-0 mindset for us," Booker said. "It's a game-seven mentality for us. Every game is a game seven for us. It gets rowdy up there but we'll be ready for it."

Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 42 points and added 12 rebounds, but the Bucks could not offer the 26-year-old Greek forward enough support as they went down 0-2, the same deficit they overcame to beat Brooklyn in the second round.

"We've just got to keep staying aggressive," Antetokounmpo said. "We've been here before. We know what the deal is. We've got to enjoy the game. It's hard when we're losing but we're going to figure it out."

The Suns seek their first NBA crown while the Bucks are trying to capture their first title in 50 years.

"We've got to just keep making it tough on them," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "We've got to look at the film and keep working to get better against this group."

Booker delivered his eighth 30-point game of the playoffs while Paul, in his first NBA Finals at age 36, added eight assists&nbsp;

Bahamas big man Deandre Ayton added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns while Jae Crowder had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix, but the surprise effort came from Bridges, who hit 8-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

"We need that," Booker said. "It takes a lot of pressure off everybody once we get it going on the offensive end."

Phoenix outscored Milwaukee 15-4 over the final 4:40 of the second quarter to seize a 56-45 half-time lead.

The Suns, without a prior playoff loss after seizing a 10-point lead, let the Bucks shoot only 35.8% in the first half.

Antetokounmpo scored 20 points in the third quarter, the most by any player in an NBA Finals quarter in 25 years, but the Suns still led 88-78 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bucks closed within 93-88, but an Ayton layup and back-to-back 3-pointers by Booker gave the Suns a 101-88 edge with 7:18 remaining.

Milwaukee answered with a 7-0 run, Jrue Holiday scoring five of his 17 in the spurt to pull the Bucks within 103-97 with 5:15 to play.

Paul responded with a 3-pointer and assisted on a Bridges' layup, boosting the Suns' lead to 108-97, and the Bucks came no closer than eight points after that.

"We had a 10-point lead and we just wanted to hold that," Booker said. "We knew they would come out desperate. We defended well and made some shots at the end."

That lifted the Suns, who went 20-of-40 from 3-point range, two wins from their first title, but they aren't thinking that way.

"We have to approach every game with a level of desperation," Suns coach Monty Williams said. "We can't look at the series numbers. Our mentality is play every game as if we're coming off a loss."

The Suns lost swingman Torrey Craig to a right leg injury at the end of the third quarter just a day after losing Croatian forward Dario Saric with a torn right knee ligament.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Antetokounmpo, who missed two games with a hyperextended left knee before returning in the opener, scared the Bucks when he fell to the court in the second and third quarters but he rose and continued each time.

"Just a cramp," he said. "I don't think it was connected to my knee."

The Bucks, who surrendered 25 points at the free throw line in the opener, went almost 16 minutes before being whistled for their first foul.

Milwaukee drove inside repeatedly, outscoring the Suns 20-0 in the paint, while Phoenix went 8-of-14 from 3-point range in a first quarter that ended with the Bucks up 29-26. The Suns matched their first-game total of 11 3-pointers by halftime.

Phoenix Suns beat Milwaukee Bucks to seize 2-0 lead in NBA Finals

Chris Paul made his debut in the NBA Finals with Phoenix Suns, Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the Milwaukee Bucks line-up, but the series that is rewriting history with every game has just started with Suns taking a 1-0 lead. Game 2 of the NBA Finals will definitely set the tone.

If the Suns make it two at home, the Bucks will have their backs against the wall at home in Game 3. If Bucks take one on the road, they will go to Fiserv Forum with a home-court advantage. But losing Game 1 is not a situation Bucks haven’t been in. They lost Game 1 of their last two series against the Brooklyn Nets and the Atlanta Hawks as well.

For Bucks, the return of Antetokounmpo didn’t bring in the desired result but the Greek star was on the floor for over 35 minutes doing everything he could, including a highlight-worthy block on Mikal Bridges. “Going to Game 2, hopefully I can feel more comfortable, more confident to go downhill, to make more plays,” Antetokounmpo said.

Paul, who starred in Game 1 with 32 points and nine assists, knows the Bucks will come back with a better game plan but said the Suns are prepared for everything that comes their way. “If they going to trap, they trap. They switch, they switch. But whatever it may be, all season long we have adjusted and prepared for whatever a team has thrown us,” said the 16-season veteran.

But both sides have time and again proved that they are a team more than an alpha-led outfit. “We have a real team, Paul said. “Like a team where you can’t just key on one guy or two guys.” Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton both have formed the trident with Paul that Suns have got their opponents on the back foot with. Booker added 27 points and six assists, and Ayton finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds in Game 1.

The Bucks too have players that have made themselves count when it mattered leading to the summit clash. Jrue Holiday is one of the best defensive guards and will put behind his 10-point performance in Game 1. Khris Middleton will also be expected to come out stronger if the Bucks hope to make a series out of this.

“We’ve got to be better defensively. We’ve got to keep them off the free throw line and we got to be more aggressive attacking and getting to the free throw line and getting to good offense,” said Mike Budenholzer admitting that it was frustrating to see Suns hitting a remarkable 25-for-26 from the free-throw line in Game 1.

NBA Finals Preview: Suns look to continue; Bucks eye a start

It didn’t matter that Giannis Antetokounmpo was not playing and it didn’t matter they were on the road. The Milwaukee Bucks just proved that nothing could stop their pursuit to win Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night (Sunday morning IST). At the back of a 118-107 win, the Bucks entered the NBA Finals for the first time in 47 years. History, indeed, in the making.

Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday combined for 59 points, exactly half of the Bucks’ total, as expected. Middleton finished with a game-high 32 points, 23 of which came in the 3rd quarter that eventually proved to be the difference. Holiday added 27 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

“Just want to win,” Middleton said of his third-quarter play that included 16 points in less than four minutes. “That’s all it is. I don’t care how many points I have. Stats go out the window. Even though I had a great third quarter, I told Jrue (Holiday) I was struggling.”

At half-time, Hawks were trailing by just four points and they opened the second half with a bucket to make it 47-45. At that point, Middleton had more turnovers (6) than points (5). But the two-time All-Star scored 16 straight points and then started a chain of passes to Holiday that put the Bucks up 91-72 at the third quarter.

“Khris caught a streak there in the third quarter, and particularly coming out to start it,” Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer said.&nbsp;“So, I think that was the turning point in the game. We were only up four but then to kind of weather a lot of turnovers in the second quarter and still be up four was I think just an indicator of good defense.”

Star of Game 5, Brook Lopez had 13 points, Pat Connaughton 13 points and Bobby Portis 12.

Returning after almost a week, Trae Young didn’t have enough to keep the series alive for the Hawks. Shooting 4-of-17 from the field, the Hawks’ cornerstone finished with 14 points and nine assists. Cam Reddish was the only Hawks player with a hot hand scoring 21 points on 6-of-7 from 3-point shooting while the rest of the team could only manage 6-of-26.

Despite a disappointing finish, the Hawks branded themselves as a future force. The undeterred Young in the post-game conference said, “This is the beginning. We've accomplished so much this year, but we all understand that this is just the beginning.”

Milwaukee Bucks advance to the first NBA Finals since 1974

By winning Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Thursday night, Milwaukee Bucks are closer than Atlanta Hawks to the NBA Finals. Going into Game 6 on Saturday night (Sunday morning IST), the momentum has slightly shifted in favour of the Bucks that found a roster capable of lifting the heavyweight of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence.

After losing Game 5, Hawks coach Nate McMillan as a matter-of-fact stated Game 6 is do-or-die. But Hawks aren’t strangers to such situations. Game 4 of this series was win-or-go-home in some ways as Hawks were down 2-1, and a loss would mean 3-1 deficit with Game 5 in Milwaukee. And Trae Young was out too. But Hawks soared in Game 4 and how.

The last two games exhibited the prowess of the supporting cast in both teams that missed its star players. The Bucks had four of the five starters scoring 22+ points in their convincing win in Game 5 while the Hawks found Lou Williams, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela, and Kevin Huerter contributing to the Game 4 blowout of Bucks.

There is still no update whether Young and Antetokounmpo will step on the hardwood in Game 6. But don’t be surprised if they make the cut as Hawks will need Young’s playmaking skills to stay alive while Bucks will want their Greek superstar to close the deal.

Hawks’ top-scorer in the last game Bogdan Bogdanovic spelled out improvements his team needed going into Game 6. “We have to start better, execution offensively, and game plan and defence. Obviously, turnovers, control the game better, control the ball,” explained Bogdanovic. “Better one-on-one defence, better rotations defensively and box out.”

Brook Lopez, who had a career playoff game, didn’t want to think about being one game away from the NBA Finals. “It's exciting. You know, but it's obviously not done. We need to bottle that energy and effort that we had and do it again in two days,” said Lopez.

A win for Bucks means they will make it to their first NBA Finals in 47 years, while if the Hawks wish to make it to the summit clash for the first time in 60 years, they will have to win two games back-to-back. But for now, they would look to survive the series.

While Lopez led the scoring for Bucks with 33, Khris Middleton got 26 with 13 rebounds and eight assists, Jrue Holiday tallying 25, and Bobby Portis registered a playoff-high of 22. For Hawks, Bogdan Bogdanovic stepped up with 28 points, but Hawks missed the creative spark their star player Trae Young provided them through the Playoffs.

Bucks showed intent and aggression as they led by 20 points at one point in the first quarter. The home team never conceded the lead and the closest Hawks came was at 65-59 at the start of the 3rd&nbsp;quarter.

“They were more physical. They hit us in the mouth, and we just did not recover from that,” said Hawks coach Nate McMillan. “They were more aggressive team from start to&nbsp;<a>finish tonight</a>.”

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer was happy how Portis played his role of the backup big man in Antetokounmpo’s absence. “He brings that passion for the game, for life. He's fun to be around. I think the crowd can feel that. His teammates can feel that. Coaches can feel it,” said Budenholzer.&nbsp;

As the series moves back to Atlanta, Hawks will be hoping their star player Trae Young is back for must-win Game 6 on Saturday (<a>Sunday morning</a>&nbsp;IST). “We've got to get back home and get ourselves ready to take care of business at home… I expect us to respond. It's do-or-die now,” said McMillan.

NBA: Brook Lopez helps Milwaukee Bucks ground Atlanta Hawks

The Eastern Conference Finals is evenly poised as Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks are tied 2-2 ahead of tomorrow’s game at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. However, both teams are likely to miss their biggest weapons.

Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks’ leading scorer, injured his foot in Game 3 and hasn’t played since then. His status for Game 5 is still not clear, but the Hawks showed they can win without him taking Game 4 by 112-88.

Coach Nate McMillan has had an impressive debut with the Hawks and acknowledged that that Game 5 in Milwaukee isn’t going to be easy. “We know it's going to be tough to go into Milwaukee and win there, but we've done that. We're capable of doing that,” said McMillan. “We're going to have to dump everything we have out on that floor again tomorrow.

The Bucks saw their star player Giannis Antetokounmpo leave the floor in the third quarter with a knee injury in Game 4. He has been listed as doubtful for Game 5 at home.

Coach Mike Budenholzer said they put his health and safety first and together make good decisions. “Hopefully there’s a way that we play both with Giannis and without Giannis,” said Budenholzer. “We’ve played games without Giannis, without Khris, without Jrue, without whoever it may be, and so hopefully you have a structure and a system where you can function at a high level on both ends of the court no matter who is playing.”

Hawks won the series opener in Milwaukee, so they know what it takes. A win in Game 5 would take them one step closer to the NBA Finals with Game 6 at home. Bucks may not read too much into it but they surely have a task at hand, fortunately in the comfort of their home.

The game will be live on Star Sports Select and the NBA League Pass at 6:00 AM

Tokyo Olympics: Kevin Durant to lead USA men's basketball team

James Harden erupted for a 34-point triple-double as the Brooklyn Nets wrapped up their NBA Eastern Conference playoff series over the Boston Celtics with a 123-109 victory on Tuesday.

Harden added 10 rebounds and 10 assists while Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant also weighed in with big contributions as the Nets completed a 4-1 victory in the best-of-seven series.

Second seeds Brooklyn will now face the third-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in the conference semi-finals.

On Tuesday's evidence at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn will head into the semi-finals brimming with confidence after signs that their big three of Harden, Irving and Durant are starting to click just at the right time.

While Harden led the scoring for Brooklyn, both Irving and Durant came up big as the Nets accelerated away in the fourth quarter after the Celtics had pulled to within seven points at the end of the third period.

Irving finished with 25 points while Durant added 24 points as Brooklyn piled on 37 points in a fourth-quarter scoring blitz.

"We've dealt with so much adversity through the regular season, it felt good to get some meaningful games in," Harden said. "It's time to lock in now."

"They're a tough Boston team. They were down a few players. But they kept fighting and fighting and made it tough for us.

"We're a special group, especially when we lock in defensively. If we can get three or four stops in a row -- we can get it going offensively because we've got that much firepower."

Boston's scorers were led by Jayson Tatum, who despite being clearly short of full fitness finished with 32 points. French international Evan Fournier finished with 18 points while Romeo Langford added 17.

Westbrook has asked for more protection for the players after the incident. He said: "I wouldn't come up to me on the street and throw popcorn on my head because you know what happens," Westbrook said.

"In these arenas, you got to start protecting the players. We'll see what the NBA does.

"For me, there are a lot of incidents where fans, they say whatever, and the consequences for me are a lot more instrumental than to the fans in the stands because they feel they are untouchable," Westbrook added.

Stephen Curry scored 46 points and claimed his second NBA scoring title as the Golden State Warriors won their sixth straight by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 113-101 on Sunday in San Francisco.

Curry finished the regular season with a 32.0-point scoring average, claiming the league title over Washington's Bradley Beal who scored 25 points earlier Sunday to finish at 31.3 points per game.

"I had a lot of good looks all night," Curry said. "We were in sync. The guys set great screens for me."

The 33-year old Curry won his first scoring title in 2016. He and Michael Jordan are the only NBA players to win a scoring title after turning 33.

Curry also joins Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain as the only players with multiple scoring titles, most valuable players awards and NBA championships.

"He's like the Picasso of our time," said teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson. "You can't have a knock on him. He's the best doing it right now."

Curry scored 17 of his game-high 46 points in the third quarter as the Warriors seized the Western Conference number eight spot in this week's play-in tournament.

Golden State will now play on Wednesday, at either Portland or the&nbsp;Los Angeles Lakers, both of whom took the court later Sunday.

"He's never been better, I can say that," coach Steve Kerr said.

Curry got plenty of help from his supporting cast, including Jordan Poole who halted a Grizzlies rally with a late three pointer.

The Warriors outscored the Grizzlies 45-18 from three-point range and outshot their opponents 49.4 percent to 43.5 overall.

"It is just confidence and the expectation and ability to know they are going to have opportunities," said Curry of his teammates. "If I get a lot of attention we move the ball, they are out there to make plays.&nbsp;

"Everybody has to be confident they are going to make an impact on both ends of the floor. We are going to need that."

Andrew Wiggins finished with 21-points and 10-rebounds, while Draymond Green just missed a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and a game-high-tying nine assists. Kevon Looney a team-high 11 rebounds for the Warriors.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 29 points and delivered 16 rebounds for Memphis, who had all five starters in double figures.

Brooks finished with 18 points, while Ja Morant tallied 16 and nine assists for the Grizzlies, who trailed 86-69 at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors outscored the Grizzlies 45-18 from three-point range and outshot their opponents 49.4 percent to 43.5 overall. "It is just confidence and the expectation and ability to know they are going to have opportunities," said Curry of his teammates. "If I get a lot of attention we move the ball, they are out there to make plays. "Everybody has to be confident they are going to make an impact on both ends of the floor. We are going to need that." Andrew Wiggins finished with 21-points and 10-rebounds, while Draymond Green just missed a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and a game-high-tying nine assists.

The US retail chain Target will not be selling the much-demanded&nbsp;Pokémon playing cards anymore, solely for the safety of their staff members and other shoppers.

This decision was taken by the retail giant after a man pulled out a gun in the parking lot of a Target store in Brookfield, Wisconsin on May 7. As the 35-year-old man left the store, he was approached and allegedly assaulted by four men, aged between 23 and 35. Within minutes of the fight, the man pulled out a gun, the local police said.

Considering the fight was simply about playing cards, Target has decided to stop the sale of Pokémon, MLB, NFL and NBA cards.

"The safety of our guests and our team is our top priority," Target told a games website. "Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve decided to temporarily suspend the sale of MLB, NFL, NBA and&nbsp;Pokémon&nbsp;trading cards within our stores, effective May 14. Guests can continue to shop these cards online at Target.com."

The resale value of playing cards of MLB, NFL, NBA and Pokémon increased manifolds during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.

"When Covid-19 hit, a lot of Gen X and Millennials were looking for things to do and we found a lot of these guys and girls started playing Pokémon again because they grew up with it," Joe Maddalena, executive vice-president at Texas-based Heritage Auctions explained the reason behind the increase in value of playing cards.

Westbrook ties Robertson for most NBA triple-doubles all-time

Washington's Russell Westbrook notched the 181st triple-double of his career on Saturday, tying Oscar Robertson for the most in NBA history.

Westbrook matched Robertson with his 10th assist of the night in the third quarter of the Wizards' 133-132 overtime victory over the Pacers in Indianapolis.
Westbrook finished with 33 points, 19 rebounds, and 15 assists, draining the go-ahead free-throws with one second left in overtime then blocking the Pacers' last shot.
Bradley Beal scored 50 points for the Wizards, so it was no surprise that when Westbrook secured his triple-double with his 10th assist late in the third it was with an arching pass to Beal for a floater in the lane.

Westbrook has 35 triple-doubles on the season -- including 25 in his last 32 games.
"Man, it's unbelievable," Westbrook said of matching Robertson, who played from 1960-74. "I'm truly blessed and thankful. I'm just thankful for everybody along the way along this journey."

Grateful to Oscar
It's not the first time Westbrook has etched his name alongside that of Robertson.
Westbrook was playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2017 when he broke Robertson's single-season record with 42 triple-doubles -- recording double digits in three major statistical categories in a feat that has become a measuring stick of all-around excellence.
In that 2016-17 season, he joined Robertson as the only player to average a triple-double for the season -- which Westbrook has now done for the fourth time in five years.

"To be in conversation with Oscar, one, I want to just thank him because he set the stage," Westbrook said. "He sacrificed a lot of things for us to be able to go out and play, and the times he played in and the things he was able to do back in the day has allowed me to be able to do things I want to do today.

"Just grateful for him, grateful for his words and appreciative of his support, as well," added Westbrook, who can pass Robertson on Monday when the Wizards play the Hawks in Atlanta.

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson is third on the NBA's all-time triple-double list with 138 and Jason Kidd is fourth on 107.
Current Lakers superstar LeBron James is the only other active player in the top five, with 99 career triple-doubles. But Westbrook had his eye on a different stat, as the narrow victory in a game that featured 33 lead changes saw the Wizards inch ahead of the Pacers into ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
The seventh through 10th-placed teams will compete in the play-in tournament for a berth in the playoffs proper.

"I take so much pride in going out and leaving everything I have on the floor," Westbrook said. "Tonight was another one of those nights where you've got to grind it out and figure it out."

Beal, who took a knock early but returned to the game before departing for good late in the fourth, wasn't on the floor when Westbrook blocked Caris LeVert's attempted game-winner for Indiana -- taking care not to foul him.

"I used my left hand on purpose," he said. "I tried to swipe left so I could go by him and block the shot.
"I'm happy it worked this time. Fortunately, we got the win -- a big win for us, it moved us up in the standings a little bit."

NBA star LeBron James was facing a firestorm of criticism from the US rightwing Friday over an incendiary tweet targeting an Ohio police officer who fatally shot a Black teenager, with conservative pundits accusing the athlete of racism and irresponsible behaviour.

The policeman shot dead 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant as she lunged with a knife at another girl in James's home state of Ohio -- prompting the Lakers star to post a picture of the officer on Twitter with the words "YOU'RE NEXT #ACCOUNTABILITY."

The killing coincided with the guilty verdict against the white police officer charged with the murder of George Floyd, a Black man whose death in Minneapolis last year sparked nationwide protests.

The 36-year-old NBA star, popularly known as "King James," took down the tweet hours later, explaining his post was "being used to create more hate -This isn't about one officer. it's about the entire system and they always use our words to create more racism. I am so desperate for more ACCOUNTABILITY."

That explanation did little to stem the tide of anger on social media, stoked by prominent rightwing pundits led by former president Donald Trump who said "His RACIST rants are divisive, nasty, insulting, and demeaning. He may be a great basketball player, but he is doing nothing to bring our Country together!"

Tom Cotton, a hardline Republican senator from Arkansas, took to Twitter to say that "Lebron James is inciting violence against an Ohio police officer. This is disgraceful and dangerous. Is the NBA okay with this? Is Twitter?"

James had avoided wading into social issues in the early days of his sporting career, but that changed with the shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager shot dead in 2012 by a man who subsequently avoided jail under Florida's "Stand your ground" law. &nbsp;

"I think it starts with the Trayvon Martin situation and the reason it starts with that, I believe is because having kids of my own — having boys of my own — it hit home for me to see and to learn the story and to think that if my boy left home and he never returned," he said in an interview with CNN in 2018.

Since then he has often spoken out about racial discrimination in the country.

"I think it's just the natural evolution and growth of a man," his longtime friend Maverick Carter told the sports new website Bleacher Report in 2018.

Thanks to his status as an athlete, his commentary on social issues and his activism, James is now seen as one of the most influential sports personalities in the political sphere. &nbsp;

He had several very public spats with Trump in the past, most frequently played out on Twitter before the social media platform barred the former president over his own incitement of a mob that attacked the US Capitol on January 6.

James even produced his own 2018 documentary series on the political engagement of Black athletes called "Shut Up and Dribble," whose title was drawn from a Fox News commentator's reaction to the basketball player's clashes with Trump.

He also has a television talk show on HBO with Carter, who is a businessman, called "The Shop" in which he discusses social issues of the day with prominent personalities.

In 2020, the four-time NBA player of the year went even further by launching "More Than a Vote", recruiting tens of thousands of volunteers to encourage Black people to register to vote ahead of last year's elections, in which Trump was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden.&nbsp;

"LeBron James should focus on basketball rather than presiding over the destruction of the NBA, which has just recorded the lowest television RATINGS, by far, in the long and distinguished history of the League," Trump said in his statement.

In 2016, Trump linked bad ratings at the NFL to the movement started by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who had taken a knee during the national anthem at ball games in protest of police violence against Black people.

The WNBA women's basketball league racked up the highest ratings gains among major US leagues in 2020 when its players were by far the most active in supporting the movement that emerged after George Floyd's death.&nbsp;

After his tweet on Wednesday, several conservative figures recalled that in October 2019 LeBron James had criticized a tweet by an NBA executive who publicly supported pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.&nbsp;

At the time, LeBron was accused of putting his own financial interests in China ahead of the struggle for democracy and human rights.

NBA star LeBron James's police tweet sparks uproar on US right

NBA chief Adam Silver applauded the outcome of the Derek Chauvin murder trial on Tuesday, saying justice had been served against the former police officer found guilty of killing unarmed Black man George Floyd.

In a joint statement with the National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts, the NBA chief said the league would continue to campaign for criminal justice and police reforms.

"George Floyd's murder was a flash point for how we look at race and justice in our country, and we are pleased that justice appears to have beens served," Silver and Roberts said.

"But we also recognize that there is much work to be done with the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association, together with our newly formed Social Justice Coalition, will redouble our efforts to advocate for meaningful change in the areas of criminal justice and policing," they added.

NBA players joined nationwide protests against Floyd's killing in Minneapolis in May last year, and the league later encouraged players to share social justice messages when the pandemic-interrupted season resumed.

The words "Black Lives Matter" were painted prominently on courts at games staged in the NBA's bubble in Orlando.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx WNBA teams both praised Tuesday's verdict in a joint statement.

"One year ago, George Floyd was murdered, causing unimaginable pain and trauma for his family, the Minneapolis community, and communities across the nation," the teams said.

"We are hopeful that today's decision will serve as a step forward, but it does not ease the physical and emotional pain that continues in an environment where systemic racism exists."

Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis edged closer to his return from injury after he was cleared for full on-court activities, coach Frank Vogel said late on Thursday.

Davis has not played since the Lakers' 122-105 defeat by the Denver Nuggets on Feb. 14 when he injured his right calf and Achilles tendon.

"He's tired of being a patient and ready to be a player again," Vogel said, adding, however, that the 28-year-old was unlikely to play in the two-game set against Utah Jazz on Saturday and Monday.

NBA Draft set for July 29 with lottery for top pick June 22

NBA commissioner Adam Silver says the league won't require players to be vaccinated against Covid-19, but if progress continues against the virus the league can play a normal schedule in "relatively full" arenas next season.

"Roughly half of our teams have fans in their arenas right now and if vaccines continue on the pace they are, and they continue to be as effective as they have been against the virus and its variants, we're hopeful that we'll have relatively full arenas next season as well," Silver said Saturday in a virtual press conference on the eve of the All-Star Game in Atlanta, Georgia.

Silver said there are no plans for any overseas exhibition or regular-season games in the upcoming campaign, but he remains confident teams will be able to play a full 82-game schedule starting next October and ending in June.

"I'm fairly optimistic, at this point, that we will be able to start on time," Silver said.

The commissioner said he believed it was a "personal decision" whether to be vaccinated "that players need to make just like everyone in our communities needs to make."

He said the league and players association were working together to provide players with information on vaccines "and also encouraging them to seek out information on their own" from personal physicians or other advisers.

Silver said that, to his knowledge, no NBA players had yet been vaccinated, although some coaches and other staff who qualified to be innoculated because of age or other reasons had been.

Even so, Silver said, the league's coronavirus protocols including mask-wearing, social distancing and rigorous contact tracing and quarantining, had allowed the season to proceed with only "a relatively small percentage of games" having to be postponed.

The coronavirus pandemic shut down the NBA in March of 2020, the league eventually cancelling 171 games before resuming in a quarantine bubble in Orlando, Florida.

After the Los Angeles Lakers captured the title in September, the new season tipped off on December 22 with each team scheduled to play 72 games.

Silver said the financial hit had been and continues to be "significant" and was being borne by both owners and players.

"Last season and this season has required a significant investment on the part of the team owners," Silver said. "They accept that. Players will end up taking a reduction in salary this season because they are partners with the league and teams on revenue.

"League executives, team executives have all taken haircuts on their salary," he said.

"But I think when we all step back, we all feel very fortunate to be working under these circumstances and my sense is the players feel the same way."

And despite his optimism, Silver sounded a cautionary note when discussing progress made in containing coronavirus.

"One thing we've all come to understand over the last year is that the virus is firmly in charge," Silver said.

The victory opened a seven-game road trip for the NBA champion Lakers, who are hoping this is the beginning of another run of victories.&nbsp;

They had a five-game winning streak snapped in their most recent outing, a 115-113 loss to Golden State.

"Our motivation was not losing two in a row tonight. We were able to get that accomplished," said forward Anthony Davis.

James made a key three pointer and capped his night with an emphatic double clutch slam dunk as the Lakers improved to a NBA best 12-4 on the season after Thursday's gritty performance at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 23 points and Davis finished with 18 points and nine rebounds in the win. Caldwell-Pope sank seven-of-10 threes as the Lakers went 19-of-37 from three-point range.

Going on a seven-game road trip might be a daunting task for some teams but not the Lakers, who have the best record in the league.

They have excelled away from Staples Center arena by compiling a franchise best 8-0 start on the road this season.

"It is coming along. We are just playing for each other," said Caldwell-Pope.

The Lakers bottled up reigning league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds but had a career high nine turnovers.

"We've got to keep working, keep playing good basketball for longer periods of time, make shots, defend better, rebound the ball better," Antetokounmpo said. "Ultimately we've got to get better."

Jrue Holiday tallied 22 points and Khris Middleton scored 20 for the Bucks, who dropped their second straight game for the first time this season.

The Bucks led by as many as seven in the first quarter before taking a 33-29 lead into the second.

The Lakers started the fourth with a five-point lead, 86-81, but quickly extended that to 11 points. The Bucks took advantage of some sloppy Laker defence to go on a 9-0 run to close the gap to 98-96 with three minutes to go on a layup by Middleton.

But four-time MVP James and Alex Caruso each drained key three pointers in the final two minutes. James, who beat the shot clock with his three pointer, then put the game away in style by driving hard to the basket and dunking it with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth.

"There were stretches where we were really good on both ends of the court," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said.&nbsp;

"We had a bad stretch, I felt like the last four or five minutes of the second quarter, on both ends of the court we were not good. We were not sharp like you need to be for 48 minutes."

&nbsp;

<h2>- Green ejected for yelling -</h2>

&nbsp;

Elsewhere, R.J. Barrett recorded a career best with 28 points, and the&nbsp;New York Knicks used a 40-point first quarter to build a lead they relinquished only momentarily in a 119-104 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Stephen Curry had a game-high 30 points for the Warriors, who were coming off back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.&nbsp;

The Warriors lost Draymond Green to a disputed technical ejection in the second quarter, when he appeared to be yelling at his own teammate&nbsp;James Wiseman -- but the officials saw it differently.

The Knicks outshot the Warriors 46.3 percent to 38.4 from the floor.

James Harden scored 34 points, and Kevin Durant's 30 included the go-ahead three-pointer in the final minute as the NBA's new-look Brooklyn Nets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 125-123 on Monday.

Harden, playing his second game for Brooklyn since arriving in a blockbuster trade, added 12 assists.

Durant added six assists and nine rebounds as the Nets held off two-time defending NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in a clash of Eastern Conference powers.

Antetokounmpo scored 34 points with 12 rebounds and seven assists for Milwaukee. Khris Middleton added 25 points -- but couldn't get a potential game-winning three-pointer to drop in the final second.

"That's a huge win for us," Harden said. "Not having a chance to practice, just going on the fly, we beat a really good Bucks team."

In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Nets trailed 122-123 when Harden missed a three-pointer but managed to corral the rebound and get the ball to Durant, who drained a three-pointer to put Brooklyn up 125-123 with 36.8 seconds remaining.

After Middleton missed a three-point attempt, Durant turned the ball over to give the Bucks one more chance, but Middleton missed again.

"It's a rejuvenation," Harden said of arriving in Brooklyn, who were without star guard Kyrie Irving for a seventh straight game. "This organization, the Brooklyn Nets, has welcomed me with open arms.

The game at Brooklyn's Barclays Arena was one of the marquee match-ups on the NBA's holiday slate honoring civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

Across town at Madison Square Garden, Julius Randle scored seven of his 21 points in the final 93 seconds as the New York Knicks held off Orlando 91-84.

Randle shot only 5-of-19 from the floor but added 17 rebounds, while R.J. Barrett had 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Knicks, who ripped Boston on Sunday, won on consecutive days for the first time in 41 tries over more than three years.

"Back-to-back is always tough for us," Randle said. "We had the lead the whole game, played well. They made a run. Stayed together.

"I couldn't throw a rock in the ocean but we got it done. It's a great win for us."

The Knicks led 19-13 after the first quarter and boosted the margin as high as 14 points early in the fourth. The Magic made a late charge but came up short in their sixth straight defeat.

The Miami Heat, missing Jimmy Butler due to Covid-19 safety protocols and Tyler Herro to neck spasms, bounced back from a 20-point loss to Detroit on Saturday with a 113-107 victory over the same Pistons team.

The Heat trailed the Pistons by 19 early, but unlike on Saturday, they were able to battle back with 28 points and 11 rebounds from Bam Adebayo, 22 points from guard Goran Dragic and 18 from Duncan Robinson.
