Spirit of the thousands of protesters who have been marching through the streets of Myanmar's biggest city saw an uptick on Sunday with the return of internet services that had been blocked a day earlier.

Norwegian telecoms provider Telenor has restored its data network in Myanmar, the company said.

"Telenor Myanmar has restored the data network nationwide, following instruction from the MoTC [Myanmar Ministry of Transport and Communications]," the firm said in a statement.

Authorities had cut access to the internet as the protests grew Saturday, fanning fears of a complete information blackout. On Sunday afternoon, however, internet users in Yangon reported that data access on their mobile phones had suddenly been restored.

Sunday saw people rallying across Myanmar to denounce last week's coup and demand the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in the biggest protests since the 2007 Saffron Revolution that helped lead to democratic reforms.

Crowds in the biggest city, Yangon, sported red shirts, red flags and red balloons, the colour of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy Party (NLD).

"We don’t want military dictatorship! We want democracy!" they chanted.

In one of the gatherings, at least 2,000 labour union and student activists and members of the public gathered at a major intersection near Yangon University.

Massive crowds from all corners of Yangon gathered in townships, filling streets as they headed towards the Sule Pagoda at the heart of the city, also a rallying point during the Buddhist monk-led 2007 protests and others in 1988.

A line of armed police with riot shields set up barricades, but did not try to stop the demonstration. Some marchers presented police with flowers as a sign of peace.

Protesters gestured with the three-finger salute that has become a symbol of protest against the coup. Drivers honked their horns and passengers held up photos of Suu Kyi.

An internal note for UN staff estimated that 1,000 people joined a protest in Naypyidaw while there were 60,000 in Yangon alone. Protests were reported in the second city of Mandalay and many towns and even villages across the country of 53 million people that stretches from Indian Ocean islands to the fringes of the Himalayas.

The demonstrations have largely been peaceful, unlike the bloody crackdowns seen in 1998 and 2007.

Suu Kyi, 75, faces charges of illegally importing six walkie-talkies and is being held in police detention for investigation until February 15. Her lawyer said he has not been allowed to see her.

She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for campaigning for democracy, and spent nearly 15 years under house arrest during decades of struggling to end almost half a century of army rule before the start of a troubled transition to democracy in 2011.

Army commander Min Aung Hlaing carried out the coup on the grounds of fraud in a November 8 election in which Suu Kyi's party won a landslide. The electoral commission dismissed the allegations of malpractice.

The military has accused Suu Kyi and her party of failing to act on its complaints that last November's election was marred by fraud, though the election commission said it had found no evidence to support the claims.

It also confirmed that other Facebook products -- Whatsapp and Instagram -- were facing disruptions.

Friday also saw around 200 teachers and students protest at a Myanmar university — the largest show of public dissent within the country so far.

The 79-year-old NLD stalwart, considered Suu Kyi's right-hand man, has spent long stretches in detention for campaigning against military rule.

The coup has drawn condemnation globally.

On Thursday, US President Biden reiterated his call for the generals to reverse course.

"The Burmese military should relinquish power they have seized, release the advocates and activists and officials they have detained, lift the restrictions in telecommunications, and refrain from violence," he said.

His National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also said the White House was "looking at specific targeted sanctions" on military-linked entities.

The UN Security Council took a softer line, voicing "deep concern" -- a step down from a draft Tuesday that had condemned the coup.

Diplomats said veto-wielding China and Russia, Myanmar's main supporters at the UN, had asked for more time Tuesday to finesse the council's response.

It is still unknown where Suu Kyi is detained who has not been seen in public since Monday when the military moved in to oust the democratic leadership and detained &nbsp;Myanmar president Win Myint.

The military had blocked internet services in the country on Thursday and restricted access to Facebook which is used by a majority of Myanmar population even as there were some reports of residents and NLD supporters hitting out against the military in Yangon.

"We will do everything we can to mobilize all the key actors and international community to put enough pressure on Myanmar to make sure that this coup fails," Guterres told The Washington Post.

"After elections that I believe took place normally and after a large period of transition, it's absolutely unacceptable to reverse the results of the elections and the will of the people."

Speaking on the indictment of Suu Kyi, the UN Secretary-General said if she can be accused, it's for being "too close to the military" and for protecting "too much of the military".&nbsp;

"I hope that democracy will be able to make progress again in Myanmar but for that all the prisoners must be released, the constitutional order must be reestablished," Guterres said.&nbsp;

He also criticised the Security Council for its failure to issue a common statement on the coup after an emergency meeting was initiated by the UK.&nbsp;

The draft text that was proposed at the beginning of the week for negotiation and accessed by news agency AFP said that the Security Council would condemn the coup and ask the Myanmarese military to "immediately release those unlawfully detained."

It also demanded that the state of emergency for one year must be repealed.&nbsp;

As of Wednesday evening, negotiations are ongoing with 15 Council members, particularly with China and Russia, which blocked Tuesday's adoption of the statement.&nbsp;

Myanmar is surrounded by five countries -- there is China in the North; India in the North and the West; Bangladesh in the West; Laos in the East; and Thailand in the South.

And all these countries stand to get distinctly affected by the coup.

Let's start with India.

India is actively looking East, and putting its neighbourhood first. And Myanmar is very much a part and parcel of it.

India has expressed concern over the coup.

We don't exactly think the world's largest democracy will engage with a military that has toppled the neighbourhood's youngest democracy.

But we also know that shunning a neighbour should be the last option.

India engages even with hostile neighbours like China. There's more to lose wtih not talking, than talking -- that's the number one rule of diplomacy.

India will hence have to walk a tightrope. There are important strategic projects at stake, and at the same time it's imperative to be on the side of democracy, and not legitimise a military dictator.

India will also have to take into account the sanctions imposed by the world. The last time the US imposed sanctions, it pushed Myanmar into China's arms.

This time the situation may be worse -- China already sees opportunity. It has not criticised Myanmar's generals, and has called the coup a reshuffle.

As we all know, China is not a fan of democracy. In 1989, it toppled the goddess of democracy at the Tianenmen Square. Last year, it supressed the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

So a setback to democracy across the border is not a bad news for Beijing.

In fact, many believe China may have supported this coup.

Experts have said Myanmar's military could not have gone ahead with a move so grave -- without the support of China.

And the only way Myanmar can survive sanctions from the West is garnering China's support.

China, on the other hand, is now maintaining an eerie silence. It says it has taken note of the situation, and has called for a reconciliation.

There is no mention of restoring democracy, or call for releasing Aung San Suu Kyi.

China is not even calling this a coup. It has termed it as 'a major cabinet reshuffle'.

China was close to the civilian government in Myanmar. It was voluntarily overseeing Rohingya repatriation talks between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

But in a way, Myanmar's coup helps China more than its democracy did. No country would want to trade with a US-sanctioned state. Except China.

Because China will now get monopoly over Myanmar's market. It will get to sell Chinese vaccines in Myanmar, construct more of its roads and buildings, and ultimately, debt trap it.

Myanmar also gives China access to waterways.

Currently, China is Myanmar's second-biggest investor. It is behind Singapore with $21.5 billion in foreign capital.

Beijing also accounts for around a third of all Myanmar's trade. The number will grow exponentially once companies and countries stop dealing with Myanmar.

Let us now go South.

Thailand has been witnessing some of the largest protests in its history.

Toppling of democracy across the border hence does not help its cause. It's a loss of momentum.

Thailand is estimated to forego around 50 million baht a day from transport inconvenience caused by the coup -- that's over a million dollars.

The economic loss is not limited to Thailand. It extends to ASEAN -- the neighbourhood as a whole.

As far as Bangladesh is concerned, the coup leaves the Rohingya repatration talks hanging by a thread.

The Rohingya refugees were skeptical of returning to Myanmar even when there was a civilian government in place. Now, their country is ruled by the same military that carried out a genocide.

In addition to this, there's no guarantee the military will even honour the repatriation commitment. It's a stalemate of the worst kind.

In a nutshell, the coup is bad news for Myanmar and its neighbours. And the only country that stands to gain is China.

Suu Kyi is the daughter of Aung San — the man who led Burma to the brink of independence in the 1940s. Suu Kyi was just two years old when her father was killed. She attended school in India, studied at Oxford and accidentally entered politics in 1988.

For decades she shouldered the dreams of her father —&nbsp;building up a free Burma.

She survived detention, house arrest. Her countrymen put her on the same pedestal as Václav Havel, Lech Wałęsa, and Nelson Mandela. Though Suu Kyi never really compared herself to Gandhi, his photo hung on the wall of the house in which she was detained for the better part of two decades.

In 2015, she finally had her shot to steer Myanmar into democracy but she chose to make exceptions to the country's democratic progress.

When Myanmar's military orchestrated a genocide in the Rakhine state and forced millions of Rohingyas to flee their homes, Suu Kyi&nbsp;looked the other way. She did little to stop the atrocities and&nbsp;indifference was seen as a betrayal by&nbsp;her supporters abroad.

The Nobel committee awarded her the peace prize in 1991. This award had made her one of the world's most prominent dissidents — the face of human rights. However, Suu Kyi ended up as one of the biggest challengers of human rights. She defended the army against charges of genocide. She said the military was "exercising the rule of law"&nbsp;in Rakhine.

In 2018, she described the generals in her cabinet as 'rather sweet'. In 2019, she went to the Hague, stood in front of the international court of justice and defended the genocide as a legitimate military operation against terrorists. She traded her goodwill to be in the good books of the military.

Three years on, the same military has imprisoned her. This coup marks the end of her career, and we can give you three reasons why.

The generals have taken control of Myanmar. The constitution allows the state of emergency to go on for one year and the&nbsp;military has no plans of handing the baton back to the parliament before that. After&nbsp;that, if they want to continue the facade of democracy, the military will obviously help its proxies come to power.

They may not want Aung San Suu Kyi to be the future of Myanmar.

While the world is campaigning for democracy in Myanmar, they are unlikely to campaign in favour of Suu Kyi specifically.

She has lost the mystique of self-sacrifice. Once a&nbsp;face of resistance against the military, she now&nbsp;became one of its staunchest spokespersons.

Yangon,Myanmar's commercial hub and&nbsp;its former capital was seized by the troops. Banks are closed and the supporters of the military are cruising around with flags. The day was supposed to mark the start of a newly elected parliament, but&nbsp;tanks are now crushing every scope of democracy.

Myanmar's is a fragile democracy and it was meant to be that way. The country's constitution was drafted by the military in 2008. The objective was never to uphold democracy, but to safeguard military supremacy.

The country came out of a 49-year-old military rule in 2011 and it has seen two coups before.

All the three branches of democracy&nbsp;have once again come under the control of the army. Sitting at the helm&nbsp;is army chief min Aung Hlaing — a&nbsp;man&nbsp;who made headlines for spearheading the Rohingya genocide and&nbsp;for being slapped with US sanctions. His men have promised balance and fairness in Myanmar.

University student activist, Si Thu Tun, said, "Our country is just a bird, learning to fly. Now the army broke our wings."

Alarm bells have gone off in the world's leading democracies, from Australia to India, United States, Britain and Japan. Even India said&nbsp;the rule of law and democratic process must be upheld. Many countries have called for the release of Myanmar's leaders.

The UK prime minister Boris Johnson, also tweeted, "The vote of the people must be respected and civilian leaders released."

However, China has not had much to say. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said, "China is a friendly neighbour of Myanmar. We hope that all sides in Myanmar... Can properly manage their differences."

"On my life I swear, that this request to the people is Aung San Suu Kyi’s genuine statement," wrote the party chairman Win Htein in a handwritten note at the bottom.&nbsp;

The US, too, issued a statement condemning the arrest of the state counselor and the upheaval caused by it in the country. "The United States is alarmed by reports that the Burmese military has taken steps to undermine the country’s democratic transition, including the arrest of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and other civilian officials in Burma," read the statement.

US President Joe Biden was also informed about the recent developments in Myanmar, "President Biden has been briefed by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. We continue to affirm our strong support for Burma’s democratic institutions and, in coordination with our regional partners, urge the military and all other parties to adhere to democratic norms and the rule of law, and to release those detained today."
