Protesters against the February 1 military coup came out on the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and other towns on Saturday -- when the country's generals were celebrating Armed Forces Day.

The nation has been in turmoil since the generals ousted and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February, triggering a major uprising demanding a return to democracy.

At least four people were killed when security forces opened fire at a crowd protesting outside a police station in Yangon`s Dala suburb in the early hours of Saturday, Myanmar Now reported. At least 10 people were wounded, the news portal said.

Three people, including a young man who plays in a local under-21 football team, were shot and killed in a protest in the Insein district of the city, a neighbour told Reuters.

Thirteen people were killed in various incidents in Mandalay, Myanmar Now said. Deaths were also reported from the Sagaing region near Mandalay, Lashio town in the east, in the Bago region, near Yangon, and elsewhere, it said.

Myanmar Now said a total of at least 50 people were killed on Saturday. Reuters could not independently verify the numbers killed.

Earlier, after presiding over a military parade in the capital Naypyitaw to mark Armed Forces Day, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing reiterated a promise to hold elections, without giving any time-frame.

"The army seeks to join hands with the entire nation to safeguard democracy," the general said in a live broadcast on state television, adding that authorities also sought to protect the people and restore peace across the country.

"Violent acts that affect stability and security in order to make demands are inappropriate."

The latest deaths will add to a toll of 328 people killed in the crackdown that has followed the coup against&nbsp;Suu Kyi's elected government.

Suu Kyi, Myanmar's most popular civilian politician, remains in detention at an undisclosed location. Many other figures in her party are also being held in custody.

In a week that saw international pressure on the junta ramped up with new US&nbsp;and European sanctions, Russia's deputy defence minister Alexander Fomin attended the parade in Naypyitaw, having meet senior junta leaders a day earlier.

"Russia is a true friend," Min Aung Hlaing said. There were no signs of other diplomats at an event that is usually attended by scores of officials from foreign nations.

Protesters have taken to the streets almost daily since the coup that derailed Myanmar's slow transition to democracy.

The United States is set to impose sanctions on two conglomerates controlled by Myanmar's military over the generals' February 1 coup and a deadly crackdown.

The move by the US Treasury to blacklist Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) and Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd (MEHL) and freeze any assets they hold in the United States could come as early as Thursday, reports said on Wednesday.

The generals staged a takeover on the first day of parliament in February, detaining civilian leaders including Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party won elections in November. The military claimed there was voter fraud but observers said there were no significant irregularities. The coup sparked a widespread uprising, and security forces have responded with violence, killing at least 275 people.

US President Joe Biden, to this end, issued an executive order on February 11 paving the way for new sanctions against the Myanmar military and its interests. The order froze about $1 billion in reserves Myanmar's central bank was holding at the New York Fed, which the junta had attempted to withdraw after seizing power.

The United States and Britain, as well as the European Union and Canada, have already imposed some sanctions against top generals including Commander in Chief Min Aung Hlaing and the chief's adult children. But aside from three gemstone companies hit by US sanctions in February and Commerce Department export blacklisting against the conglomerates, sanctions had until now not targetted the military's business interests.

The military controls vast swathes of Myanmar’s economy through the holding firms and their subsidiaries, with interests ranging from beer and cigarettes to telecom, tires, mining and real estate.

Activists have been calling for sanctions to starve the military of revenue, and want governments to go further and hit oil and gas projects that are a major source of revenue to Myanmar.

US to blacklist Myanmar military companies after coup, crackdown

Security forces Thursday opened fire on anti-coup protesters in Myanmar's eastern Karen state, as demonstrators -- yet again -- took to the streets in nationwide rallies.

The military junta has been struggling to quell nationwide protests against the February 1 ouster and arrest of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and has since unleashed a wave of violence and anarchy in the country.

Overnight, a village south of Mandalay used candles to show support for a group of ousted MPs -- called the Committee for Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), the Burmese word for "parliament" -- working underground against the junta. The junta has banned the group, announcing that any involvement with them is akin to "high treason".

So far, more than 280 people have been killed, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners -- a local monitoring group tracking the death toll and arrests. But the junta puts the death toll as much lower at 164, and has branded the victims as "violent terrorist people".

International condemnation from the UN, United States and former colonial power Britain has done little to quell the violent crackdowns.

Myanmar has freed more than 600 people -- who had been arrested for protesting against last month's military coup. Several buses full of prisoners drove out of Insein prison in the morning, media reports said.

"All the released are the ones arrested due to the protests, as well as night arrests or those who were out to buy something," said a member of a legal advisory group who said he saw the buses leaving.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners activist group says at least 2,000 people have been arrested in the military crackdown on the protests against the February 1 coup.

"We released 360 men and 268 women from Insein prison today," a senior official from the jail told AFP.

Local media showed images of the prisoners on the buses flashing the three-fingered salute -- a sign of resistance for the anti-coup movement -- as people waiting outside the prison waved at them and returned the gesture.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Myanmar activists have planned for more anti-coup protests on Wednesday, including a silent strike with many businesses due to close and calls for people to stay home. Pro-democracy protesters also held more candle-lit vigils overnight including in a district of the commercial capital Yangon and in Thahton in Mon State.

The vigils came after staff at a funeral service in Mandalay told Reuters on Tuesday that a seven-year-old girl had died of bullet wounds in the city - the youngest victim so far in a bloody crackdown of opposition to the February 1 coup.

The bloodshed has not quelled the anger over the ouster of the elected government and the detention of its leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, though some protest organisers say they have to adapt their tactics.

The military has justified its takeover by claiming electoral fraud in elections last November that were won by Suu Kyi's party in a landslide. EU foreign ministers are on Monday set to approve sanctions on 11 Myanmar junta officials. The move comes after the 27-nation bloc last month agreed to target Myanmar's military and its economic interests over its seizure of power.

One diplomat said the 11 individuals to be placed on an EU assets freeze and visa ban blacklist by ministers meeting in Brussels are military and police officers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday condemned what he denounced as the military's continuing brutal violence. A "firm, unified international response" was urgently needed, his spokesman quoted him as saying.

UN rapporteur Tom Andrews called for sanctions to what he called the generals' ruthless attacks on the people.

"The world must respond by cutting their access to money and weapons. Now," he wrote on Twitter.

The US House of Representatives approved legislation condemning the coup and lawmakers decried the increasingly harsh tactics against the demonstrators.

Authorities have tightened restrictions on internet services, making information increasingly difficult to verify, and clamped down on private media.

Ambassadors of Western countries condemned the violence as "immoral and indefensible", in the Hlaing Tharyar industrial district of the commercial capital Yangon, where dozens were killed over several days after Chinese-owned garment factories were torched last weekend.

"Internet blackouts and suppression of the media will not hide the military's abhorrent actions," they said in a statement on Friday.

Asian neighbours have also been speaking out to urge an end to the violence.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, in some of the strongest comments yet by a regional leader, said he would ask Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to call an urgent meeting.

Backing Indonesia's call for a meeting, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he was appalled by the persistent use of lethal violence against unarmed civilians.

Philippine foreign minister Teodoro Locsin said that ASEAN had to act.

Singapore has also spoken out against the violence and the coup that triggered it, calling for the release of Suu Kyi.

But the military has shown no sign of being swayed. Suu Kyi, who has campaigned for democracy in Myanmar for three decades, is now being held at an undisclosed location.

Police in Yangon were forcing people to clear protesters' barricades on Friday, residents said, while demonstrators were out in the second city of Mandalay, the central towns of Aungban and Myingyan and the eastern town of Myawaddy, posts on social media showed.

Police fired tear gas in Aungban and there was also a confrontation in Myawaddy but no reports of any casualties.

Hundreds have fled towns and cities since the coup and are sheltering in areas controlled by ethnic minority militias on the Thai border, an official from one group said.

People have also crossed the western border into India.

The data from the spacecraft would be collected by the Japanese university and cannot be independently accessed by Myanmar officials.

The US government has offered Myanmar citizens, stranded by the violence following the country's military coup, refuge in the United States under "temporary protected status."

The United States has earlier also granted TPS protection to nationals of a number of countries struck by political upheavals or natural disasters that make their return difficult.

"Due to the military coup and security forces' brutal violence against civilians, the people of Burma are suffering a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis in many parts of the country," Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, using Myanmar's former name, said on Friday.

"After a thorough review of this dire situation, I have designated Burma for temporary protected status so that Burmese nationals and habitual residents may remain temporarily in the United States."

The TPS protection is usually set for a limited period, like 12 months, but can be extended if the hardships or threats remain.

The DHS said the February 1 takeover by Myanmar's military has led to an economic crisis and shortages of humanitarian and medical aid in the country.

In addition, it said the people protesting the coup face arbitrary detention, intimidation and lethal violence from the military.

"Such conditions prevent Burmese nationals and habitual residents from returning safely," the department said in a statement.

The initial TPS order will last 18 months. DHS said about 1,600 people in the United States now would qualify for it.&nbsp;

Earlier this week President Joe Biden's administration offered TPS for tens of thousands of Venezuelans who fled political repression and economic chaos in the once wealthy South American country.

On Saturday, activists called for more anti-coup protests on the death anniversary of Phone Maw, a student whose killing in 1988 sparked an uprising against the government. The calls for protests also came as the leaders of the United States, India, Australia and Japan vowed to work together to restore democracy in Myanmar where violence has escalated as authorities crack down on protests and civil disobedience.

The protesters were killed in police firing in the Tharketa district of Myanmar's commercial capital Yangon overnight. DVB News said police opened fire on a crowd that gathered outside the Tharketa police station demanding the release of people arrested.&nbsp;Local media Democratic Voice of Burma and Khit Thit Media confirmed the deaths as well.&nbsp;

The UN rights expert also sought unified and coordinated sanctions against the military and also said that basic rights to freedom of expression and assembly are being denied in Myanmar

"Myanmar is being controlled by a murderous, illegal regime. It's current leadership perpetuated the atrocity crimes that are the focus of the charge of genocide before the international criminal court of justice," &nbsp;Andrews said, adding, "I documented in the annexe to my report, the crimes against the Rohingya people continue," Andrews added.

The United Nations special rapporteur was presenting his latest report on the situation to the UN council but lamented that since its publishing last week, the numbers of people killed and detained by the military had swelled significantly.

The turmoil prompted Britain, the country's former colonial ruler, to urge its citizens to get out if they could, warning that "political tension and unrest are widespread since the military takeover and levels of violence are rising".&nbsp;

"The Foreign, Commonwealth &amp; Development Office advises British nationals to leave the country by commercial means, unless there is an urgent need to stay," the British foreign ministry said.

The move comes after Thomas Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, gave a stark assessment of the crisis.&nbsp;

The country is "controlled by a murderous, illegal regime" that was likely committing "crimes against humanity," Andrews told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

These crimes likely include "acts of murder, enforced disappearance, persecution, torture" carried out with "the knowledge of senior leadership", including junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, Andrews said.

While stressing that such offences can only be determined in a court of law, he said there was clear evidence that the junta's crimes were "widespread" and part of a "coordinated campaign".

Thursday saw at least nine protesters killed in different parts of the country, including six in central Myanmar's Myaing township -- five of them shot in the head, according to a witness.

Rights group Amnesty International released a major report on the crisis on Thursday, accusing the junta of using battlefield weapons on unarmed protestors and carrying out premeditated killings.

International pressure has been building on the generals, but they have shown no signs of heeding calls for restraint, continuing to try to quell daily protests by force.

Meanwhile, the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun called for "de-escalation" and "diplomacy".

"Now it's time for de-escalation. It's time for diplomacy. It's time for dialogue," Zhang Ju asserted.

Zhang added that "China has participated in the (statement) negotiation in a constructive manner. China's friendship policy toward Myanmar is for all the people of Myanmar. China stands ready to engage and communicate with the relevant parties, and play a constructive role in easing the current situation."

Myanmar has been hit by violence ever since the military coup on February 1 which led to the ouster of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The military has imposed a state of emergency for one year even as demonstrators have been campaigning for the military to restore the democratically led government in the country.

At least 60 people have been killed in the violence and several arrested with Yangon and Mandalay becoming the flashpoint of protests.

India on Wednesday played a constructive role in the presidential statement that was issued by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding the situation in Myanmar.

The statement by the UNSC reiterated "deep concern" about the development in Myanmar while condemning the "violence against peaceful protesters". The one-page statement expressed "deep concern" over restrictions against medical personnel, civil society, labour union members, journalists and media workers, and "called for the immediate release of all those detained arbitrarily".&nbsp;

This is the first time the UNSC statement has "condemned" the violence in Myanmar.

India's "constructive" engagement was reflected in the UNSC statement and also in line with its previous statement at the United Nations. When it comes to New Delhi's policy on Myanmar, it was explicitly mentioned by India's ambassador to the UN, TS Tirumurti, at the United Nations General Assembly in February. While expressing "concerns", the envoy called out for "restoration of democratic order", the release of political detainees, and the development should not impact the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to the country.&nbsp;

The UNSC presidential statement builds upon the earlier press statement of February 4. The core UN group had met back then, days after February 1 coup.&nbsp;

Back then, India was widely appreciated for playing an "important" role by being the "bridge" and making sure that there is a balanced approach in the text. In both major conversations at the UN high table, India did not take sides with the Chinese or Russian position.&nbsp;

Interestingly, immediately after the UNSC statement, the Chinese envoy to United Nations Zhang Jun issued a statement and parroted the line of Myanmar's military.&nbsp;

"The international community should create an enabling environment for relevant parties in Myanmar to address differences under the constitutional and legal framework," he added.

Question is that half the "relevant parties" is the disposed civilian government of the country which is in jail for any "differences" to be addressed. As for the "constitutional or legal" framework, many will see it being violated by Tatmadaw or the armed forces of Myanmar in the first place.

Myanmar's military junta has removed Arakan Army (AA) insurgents from its list of terrorist groups in order to help establish peace across the country.

The state media said on Thursday that the Rakhine rebels, as the faction is referred to as, had stopped attacks in Myanmar. The move also comes at a time when the army is struggling to contain daily protests against its February 1 coup in which elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown.

The AA had been placed on the list of terrorist groups last year under Aung San Suu Kyi's government.

The AA is fighting for greater autonomy in the western Rakhine state and over the past two years had become one of the most formidable forces in challenging an army that has been fighting various ethnic wars for about seven decades.

"The designation of this group as a terrorist group is terminated from Mar 11, 2021," state-run Mirror Daily said, citing the end of attacks and the junta's vision of building "nationwide eternal peace".

The AA's ranks are largely drawn from the ethnic Rakhine and Buddhist majority in what was an independent kingdom until the 18th century.

AA spokesman Khine Thu Kha said Rakhine had suffered years of violence and decline and the removal of its designation as a terrorist group was positive.

Notably, the AA had not voiced support for the protesters and there have been very few protests in Rakhine state, which came to world attention in 2017 when 700,000 people from the Rohingya Muslim minority fled an army crackdown.

Meanwhile, as many as seven people were killed when security forces opened fire on anti-junta protests in Myanmar on Thursday even as rights group Amnesty International accused the military of adopting battle tactics against demonstrators.

Six people were killed in the central town of Myaing when forces fired on a protest, one man who took part in the demonstration and helped carry bodies to hospital, told Reuters by telephone. A health worker there confirmed all six deaths.

One person was killed in the North Dagon district of Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city, domestic media said. Photographs posted on Facebook showed a man lying prone on the street, bleeding from a head wound.

Before Thursday's deaths, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners advocacy group has said more than 60 protesters have been killed and about 2,000 people detained by security forces since the February 1 coup.

Amnesty International accused the army of using lethal force against protesters and said many killings documented amounted to extrajudicial executions.

The junta has previously said it is acting with utmost restraint in handling what it describes as demonstrations by "riotous protesters" whom it accuses of attacking police and harming national security and stability.

The army has justified the coup by saying that the election, won by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, was marred by fraud - an assertion rejected by the electoral commission. The junta has promised a new election within a year, but has not set a date.

Security forces for Myanmar's military regime are using battlefield weapons on unarmed protestors and carrying out premeditated killings orchestrated by their commanding officers, Amnesty International said Thursday.

The human rights group collated graphic video clips posted on social media to document what it called a "nationwide killing spree" in the weeks since the military seized power on February 1.

"These Myanmar military tactics are far from new, but their killing sprees have never before been livestreamed for the world to see," Joanne Mariner, Amnesty's director of crisis response, said in a new report.

"These are not the actions of overwhelmed, individual officers making poor decisions," she said.

"These are unrepentant commanders already implicated in crimes against humanity, deploying their troops and murderous methods in the open."

Amnesty presented analysis of 55 videos recorded from February 28 to March 8 in cities across Myanmar, including Mandalay and Yangon.&nbsp;

In one Facebook clip, dated February 28 from the southeastern city of Dawei, a soldier is seen handing his rifle to a police officer next to him. The policeman takes aim and shoots, before personnel around them erupt in apparent celebration.

The footage was recorded from a property above the street. In the background of the audio, women can be heard sobbing.

"Not only does this incident show a reckless disregard for human life, making sport of shooting live rounds at protesters, it also reveals deliberate coordination among security forces," Mariner said.

Amnesty said some military units had been drafted in from restive ethnic-minority areas of Myanmar where many atrocities are said to have occurred, and also alleged extrajudicial executions of protestors.&nbsp;

- 'Deadly new phase' -

Another clip, taken off Twitter from March 3, shows personnel leading a man towards a larger group of security forces in Yangon.&nbsp;

The man appears to be in custody and is offering no visible resistance when an officer beside him shoots him.&nbsp;

He is left on the road, apparently lifeless, for several seconds before officers drag him away.

Amnesty also catalogued the use by security forces of firearms that are "completely inappropriate for use in policing protests", including light machine guns, sniper rifles and semi-automatic rifles.

"The weaponry deployed by the Tatmadaw (Myanmar armed forces) reveals a deliberate and dangerous escalation in tactics," Mariner said.&nbsp;

"Make no mistake, we are in a deadly new phase of the crisis."

Amnesty urged the UN Security Council to step in.

On Wednesday it unanimously agreed on a statement condemning the military's use of violence against the peaceful anti-coup protesters.

It was the second time in just over a month that its 15 members -- including China, a traditional ally of the former Burma -- made a rare show of unity over Myanmar.

However, the statement does not use the word "coup" or mention the possibility of international sanctions if the generals do not halt their repression.

Earlier versions of the British-drafted resolution, under discussion since Friday, was more forthright but was blocked on Tuesday, with China, Vietnam, India and Russia opposed, diplomats said.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi last month, triggering daily protests around the country for the return of democracy.

Meanwhile, shops, factories and banks were closed in Yangon on Monday after trade unions called for a shutdown. The military said it had arrested 41 people on Monday as anti-military protests continued. Protesters have been calling for a return to democracy and freeing Aung San Suu Kyi even as the military has intensified its crackdown. A local campaign manager from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) Khin Maung Latt had died in police custody on Sunday amid reports of torture. Meanwhile, China said it was prepared to engage "all parties" to ease the Myanmar crisis even as several nations including the United States, UK and Canada have imposed sanctions on the country's military officials. The protests which have been going on for over a month since the February 1 coup has severely disrupted normal life in the country. The military has imposed a state of emergency for a year which triggered mass protests against the junta. Heavy security cover has been deployed in Yangon amid reports security forces had taken over several public hospitals. On Sunday, Australia's foreign minister Marise Payne said the country was suspending its defence cooperation programme with Myanmar even as United Nations Special Envoy on Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener demanded an end to the "repression" of protesters.
