<p>Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has also backed Dravid to join India's backroom staff after Shastri. Prasad also wants MS Dhoni to take a mentorship role with the team alongside Dravid. The former chief selector said it will be fantastic for the Indian team to have the iconic duo of Dravid and Dhoni in coaching and mentorship role.</p>

<p>“I would definitely feel that going forward it should be Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni. Rahul more as a coach and MS as a mentor. Dhoni and Rahul in the Indian team will be a fantastic thing to watch out for post-Ravi Shastri’s era,” Prasad was quoted as saying by <em>Times of India</em> in an interview.</p>

<p>India also reached the semi-final of the ODI World Cup in 2019 and the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship earlier this year under Shastri.</p>

<p>After the match, Dhoni stated at the post-match presentation, "It's the full team (effort). It was tough when we didn't qualify last time. Emotions were quite high. Forget what has happened till now, we wanted to make the most of the 3-4 games left towards the end. A lot of our batters made the most of that period which is why I feel we have come back strongly this year. Credit goes to the support staff and everyone in the team. Without their character you can't really comeback like this."</p>

<p>Dhoni said that he keeps his chats with the team's premier batter Ruturaj Gaikwad simple. "Whenever Ruturaj and I have a chat, it's a simple chat. Want to know what he was thinking. It's good to see how well he has improved. He is someone willing to bat 20 overs," he said.</p>

<p>On promoting Shardul Thakur to No 4, Dhoni said that he wanted to check out if he can get a couple of boundaries that can make a difference when the gap between runs required and balls left is 15 to 20.</p>

<p>"Shardul has done decent batting, as has Deepak. He/they are allowed to go for the shots from first ball unlike other top-order batters," said Dhoni.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was the situation that prompted him to send Robin Uthappa at No. 3 instead of Moeen Ali. "Robin enjoys batting at the top but Moeen has been excellent at No. 3. But we have created a situation where either of them could bat at No. 3 depending on the situation and the opposition."</p>

<p>Dhoni feels the kind of practice they got the last season after being knocked out of play-offs helped this season as it was evident with Ruturaj scoring 600-plus runs with one more match to go.</p>

<p>"Last season was the first time we didn't qualify into play-offs. But we wanted to just make use of the 3-4 games left last season and a lot of our batters made use of that. That is the reason why we have come back strongly this season."</p>

<p>"Actually, everyone wanted him (Pant) to be like Mahi bhai. The way MSD was behind the stumps. I remember if Pant would ever drop any catch or the DRS went wrong, then the whole ground would start shouting 'Mahi Mahi'," Chahal told SGTV.</p>

<p>"So, there was a lot of pressure on that child (Pant)… because he was only around 19 or 20 years old at that time. We would tell him to ignore all these things and focus on your game. He was under tremendous pressure...then he was also out of the team for a while," he added.</p>

<p>Chahal was part of the Indian side when Pant made his international debut in 2017. The young left-hander has since come a long way and is currently India's first-choice wicket-keeper batsman heading into the T20 World Cup 2021. Pant is also leading the Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2021 and has led his side to the playoffs.&nbsp;</p>

His performance has been really good and I guess people should understand that when a sportsperson is on the ground, he tries his best, and nobody wants to perform badly. <p>We have five coaches altogether, headed by Ricky Ponting. We have a very good understanding and communication. There are specific coaches for specific roles. It might look on field that lot of things happen on the 22-yard cricket strip by players, but there are a&nbsp;lot of planning&nbsp;and strategies&nbsp;happen&nbsp;behind-the-door&nbsp;or from the backend.</p>

<p>There have been occasions in this season where we have fielded only three overseas players but still won. We are performing as a team. It has been a complete team performance as we aren't relying on certain individuals. Performances are coming from all corners. Ponting is very communicative with the players and in that&nbsp;way, we have an edge (over others). Players are prepared to be mentally tough under someone like&nbsp;Punter.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Q3) The discussion might have been a lengthy one regarding who should captain DC in the final leg. How has Pant been as captain according to you? Mention one quality of him as a young leader, who is looking to change DC's fortunes this time around.</strong></p>

<p>This is the first time that Pant is leading in the IPL. He has led in the Delhi team in the past but leading an IPL team is a different ball-game. In Rishabh's case, he is quite clear on what he wants to do. It might not seem logical from the outside, but he goes with his instincts and backs himself. Every decision has pros and cons.
