<p>Writer-director Sudip Sharma had opened up a new world when he created the procedural drama <i>Kohrra</i> in 2023. The web series, mostly in Punjabi, unusually showcased the state of Punjab, sans all the bonhomie and colour that films often associate the state with. Much like its plot, a murder mystery, the drama had muted colours, with heavy fog shrouding the lives of those involved in the case. Sharma returns with <i>Kohrra</i> season 2, with a new mystery and a new set of complications, but keeps the same aesthetics and mood of the first season. Just like the first season, a heavy fog remains on the lives of the police officers investigating the case, the identity of the killer, the victim’s family and societal prejudices.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Actor Barun Sobti returns as Assistant Sub-Inspector Garundi in season 2 of <i>Kohrra</i>, which shifts the story to Jagrana, a small town in Punjab. Garundi has a new wife and a new boss and has to maintain a fine balance between professional and personal life. &nbsp;As a woman is found dead in the barn of her brother’s home, Garundi and his boss, Assistant-Inspector Dhanwant Kaur (Mona Singh), are given charge of the case. As the two officer get cracking on the case, they have to also face demons of their own past and strike a balance between personal and professional at all times.</p><h2>What’s the plot of Kohrra 2</h2><p>&nbsp;</p><p>When a woman (Pooja Bhamrrah) is found dead in her brother’s (Anurag Arora) barn, everyone is a suspect. Her NRI husband (Rannvijay Singha), a new possible love interest with whom she intended to start a dance studio and the brother himself. &nbsp;At the onset, the case seems like an open-and-shut case, with the cops finding bloodied footprints of the murderer all over the crime scene. But as Garundi and Dhanwant start investigating, the case becomes murky, with past issues of each suspect spilling out in the open. Dhanwant, who has been reappointed to her post and given charge of the case, is battling a dark past of her own. Garundi, newly married, wants to leave his past and start afresh with his wife, but the familial burden keeps pulling him down.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>While the cops investigate the case, more murders pile up. Meanwhile, a young labourer from Jharkhand comes to the same town looking for his father, who had come to Jagrana town about twenty years ago as a labourer but has been missing for over a year. Dhanwant and her team have her hands full and pressure from the top, along with domestic issues of her own; the Sub-Inspector has a lot at stake and a lot to prove her worth.</p>

<h2>What works and what doesn’t</h2><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Director Sudip Sharma, who also serves as a co-writer with Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia, keeps the template of the first season but makes this season darker. There, love defined the lives of each of the characters; here, it is the societal structure that sets the story. Primarily in Punjabi, the fog of mystery, of guilt and of societal norms hang heavy over the plot, making <i>Kohrra 2</i> more compelling. The writing is solid, and one is hooked to the story from the first frame. The compelling plot is backed by powerful performances. While Suvinder Vicky had led the series in the first season, in <i>Kohrra 2</i>, it's Mona Singh and Barun Sobti who steer the narrative well.</p>

<p> </p><p>Singh plays a troubled Dhanwant Kaur, who is a diligent officer but has too much burden of the past that tends to pull her back. It's a restraint perfromance and one in which Singh shines. Pradyuman Singh plays her alcoholic husband and delivers a fine performance.</p><p>Barun Sobti, a man who has been a star on television and someone who has reinvented himself in the OTT space, plays Garundi well. The character has now evolved but is conscious of his background. Sobti brings earnestness to his performance and makes it look effortless, making Garundi a very likeable man. His scenes with a constable called Aujla stand out for their natural chemistry and humour.</p><p> </p><p>There is also a young actor, Prayrak Mehta, who plays Arun, a migrant worker from Jharkhand who comes to Punjab in search of his father. Mehta, a relatively new face, steals the show in the scenes he features in. Your heart goes out to his character, a desperate man looking for his father, whom he has never met and who is constantly failed by the system. Mehta’s track is important to the story and very well written. The young actor does justice to the writing, delivering a stunning performance, one that stays with you long after the show is over.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>While the series, with its layered and dark story, is engaging, it does become a tad sluggish somewhere in the middle, when Garundi and Dhanwant are unable to crack the case and get tied down due to their personal issues.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, the show picks up pace in the fifth and sixth (final) episodes, delaying the revelation of the killer till the end. It’s not something that you expect (which is a good thing) and one that makes you ponder over power dynamics and class divides that exist in our society.</p><h2>Final verdict</h2><p>Kohrra 2 is equally riveting as the first season, with stunning performances from its cast. It is layered and dark, with engaging subplots that seamlessly merge with the main story. Sharma, who had also created <i>Paatal Lok</i> 1 and 2, manages to elevate a mystery thriller into a commentary on societal privileges and prejudices. The result is a series that is compelling and one that stays with you for a long time.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><i>Kohrra 2</i> is streaming on Netflix.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, <em>Kaala Paani</em> actor Mahadev Singh Lakhawat who plays a man named Pundi on the show, opens up about working with Mona Singh on the show and how he was stuck on the islands due to a cyclone while shooting for the show.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: How was your experience collaborating with a talented cast in Kaala Paani? How was working with Mona Singh on the show?&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Mahadev Singh Lakhawat: It was an exhilarating experience. As a trained actor, the script is very important to me, and I was in love with the script of <em>Kaala Paani</em>. Also, when the workshops happened and we all met as co-actors, I was mesmerised to see each actor bringing their unique skills and creativity to the table, which elevated the overall quality of the project. It was inspiring to be surrounded by such talented individuals, and it pushed me to give my best performance. Shooting in a location like Andaman was a completely different experience. We were caught in&nbsp;Andaman for some time because of a cyclone but that only helped&nbsp;bring authenticity to the script.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WION: Did you always want to be an actor?</strong></p>

<p>Mahadev Singh Lakhawat: I have always been passionate about acting. Since my childhood, I had a deep love for storytelling and performing in front of an audience. I was very interested in cultural activities during my school days. Although I graduated in law and have a diploma in cyber law, I always wanted to act because it's what makes me happiest.</p>

<p>I graduated from NSD and gained experience in theatre. I came to Bombay in 2019 and after a few months, the pandemic happened. Once the lockdown started lifting, I was lucky enough to get roles in good projects because people had seen my plays previously and knew my work. Acting allows me to express myself, explore different characters, and connect with people through the medium of storytelling. It has been a lifelong dream, and I feel fortunate to be living it now.</p>

This is my debut film, to be honest. Then there is <em>Sector 36</em>, starring Deepak Dobriyal and Vikrant Massey, directed by Aditya Nimbalkar and produced by Maddock Films. Currently, I'm shooting for Nikhil Advani's film <em>Vedaa</em>, which is slated to release next year. It stars John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh.&nbsp;</p>

A few days before, WION got the chance to speak to the actress Mona Singh - who is not just known for her outstanding acting, but for inspiring millions of women with the bold choices she has made in her life. Over the years, the 41-year-old has never shied away from speaking her mind, especially when it came to women's freedom, gender stereotypes and equality in society. Singh is one of the most loved actors in our industry and her charm is infectious. Mona, who got married at the age of 38 and reiterated the fact that marriage has no age bar, spoke candidly to WION about her life and shared some inspiring messages for young women. Here are the excerpts from the interview: Q: What is it like to be a woman in the entertainment industry? Mona: There has been a strong presence of women in the industry since the 1940s all over the world. As a child, I grew up watching actresses and aspired to be one myself someday. My mother used to watch actresses like Madhubala and Nutan, and I sat with her and saw them when I was a kid. While growing up, seeing actresses like Juhi Chawla and Kajol made an impact on me through the roles they played. Hollywood actresses like Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, and Meryl Streep also left a mark on me. Somewhere, I knew I had that talent in me. There was a sense of belonging here. I am so glad to be a part of this industry. It is a blessing for me and a very humbling experience to receive such love and support from the audience. I believe being a female or a male does not make a difference if you wish to be a part of this industry. It just takes a lot of hard work. Q: Your community on coto #MeriMarzi is all about encouraging women to embrace unconventional choices. Even in the 21st century, young girls are always stopped and questioned about their moves. What is your view on this? Mona: We live in a world where women are always told what to do, what to wear, where to go, and so on. Even when it comes to choosing a career or a life partner, some women don't have the luxury of making that decision for themselves. This must change. We’ve got just one life, and life is short. So why waste it by worrying about what the world thinks? That’s why I created Meri Marzi – a community to celebrate their life and choices. My parents were very supportive, so I was never pressured to marry at a certain age. I got married only when I found the right partner for myself and I felt the time was right. I spoke to my parents and met a family gynaecologist and made the final call. Today I see many women coming forward and taking this step even when they are not married- it’s a beautiful change. Based on Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 Oscar-winning film ‘Forrest Gump’, 'Laal Singh Chaddha' should have ideally been adapted for the Indian audience at least a decade or two back. Tom Hanks was in his 30s and had undergone drastic weight loss to play the part which highlighted a journey of a boy to a man. Be it his mother, who always has encouraged him to do things beyond his capabilities or Bala (Naga Chaitanya), a batchmate while they were training in Army or Muhammad Paaji (Manav Vij) a fundamentalist who Laal saves accidentally during the Kargil war or Rupa (Kareena Kapoor) who is in and out of his life through the course of several decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The writing of 'Laal Singh Chaddha'</strong><br />

The beauty of 'Laal Singh Chaddha' lies in the fact that while some important messages are delivered through the narrative, it never turns preachy. It celebrates humanity above religion and caste —&nbsp;somewhat like Aamir's other film 'PK'. But while 'PK' did have Aamir Khan preaching about humanity, here the messaging is subtle and more layered. At the onset, it is about a slow-witted Laal and the people in his life but when you look deeper, the film is a commentary on evolving socio-political scenario in India. Without taking sides, the film tries to reiterate that humanity is above religion. "Mazhab malaria paida kar sakta hai,"&nbsp;says Aamir to Vij's character in a poignant moment.<br />
<br />
The film takes a few liberties, especially while showing Vij's character who plays a fundamentalist and is saved by Laal during the Kargil war and then treated in an Army hospital. Slightly stretched from reality where the Indian army saves a Pakistani terrorist and then decides to not pursue him when he disappears into thin air after being treated at the Army hospital. Shot all across India by Satyajit Pande, the film's canvas is large and picturesque too. From Ladakh to Kerala, the characters are spread across various cities and states, each having an impact on Laal. The music by Pritam too is praiseworthy.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The performances</strong><br />

Aamir Khan is known to get into the skin of his characters. Here too, as a turban-wearing Sikh, he adapts certain mannerisms from Hanks' portrayal but somehow appears to ham majorly. Wide-eyed with extra eyelashes, he speaks mostly in Punjabi and 'Hmms' more between sentences. On many occasions, Khan's Laal seems a caricature, in others, his performance reminds you of the characters he played in 'PK' and 'Dhoom 3'. It isn't also always very consistent.<br />
<br />
The film though has Kareena Kapoor Khan in top form. As the sad, beautiful, conflicted Rupa, Kareena adds a certain amount of warmth to the story. The actress delivers a restrained performance,&nbsp;similar as in 'Talaash' and totally steals the show in the limited screen time she has. It is so nice to see the actress evolving her craft with this film. Manav Vij and Mona Singh too deliver commendable performances in the film. Naga Chaitanya, in his Bollywood debut, wins heart as the endearing Bala who wants to quit the army and induct Laal into his family business of sewing underwears. Aamir and Naga share great camaraderie on screen. Some of their scenes are the highlights of the film.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The day has finally come! Fans of legendary actor Aamir Khan can see their icon step into the shoes&nbsp;of&nbsp;Laal Singh Chaddha and witness him tell a simple man’s extraordinary story.</p>

<p>Starring&nbsp;Kareena Kapoor in the female&nbsp;lead alongside Aamir, the film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’&nbsp;is a Hindi adaptation of the hit Hollywood film &nbsp;‘Forrest Gump’. The film&nbsp;marks the Bollywood debut of south actor Naga Chaitanya.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is helmed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Viacom18 Studios and Paramount Pictures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The trailer of the film was&nbsp;released by the makers during the first innings of the IPL 2022 finale. Aamir also shared it on his Instagram account for his fans.</p>

<p>The 2-minute-long trailer gives glimpses into the strong and emotional&nbsp;bond between a specially-abled child and a mother, played by &nbsp;Mona Singh. In the trailer, the mother,&nbsp;who is ready to&nbsp;move mountains for her son, is seen&nbsp;making&nbsp;sure that her little munchkin&nbsp;is considered ‘normal’ and behaves like other&nbsp;healthy young boys.</p>

<p>Then we see little Laal overcoming his disability and getting a spot in the armed forces. A romantic connection is also seen between Aamir and Kareena but not much is revealed in the trailer.&nbsp;</p>

The day has finally come! Fans of legendary actor Aamir Khan can see their icon step into the shoes of Laal Singh Chaddha and witness him tell a simple man’s extraordinary story. Starring Kareena Kapoor in the female lead alongside Aamir, the film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is a Hindi adaptation of the hit Hollywood film ‘Forrest Gump’. The film marks the Bollywood debut of south actor Naga Chaitanya. It is helmed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Viacom18 Studios and Paramount Pictures. The trailer of the film was released by the makers during the first innings of the IPL 2022 finale. Aamir also shared it on his Instagram account for his fans. The 2-minute-long trailer gives glimpses into the strong and emotional bond between a specially-abled child and a mother, played by Mona Singh. In the trailer, the mother, who is ready to move mountains for her son, is seen making sure that her little munchkin is considered ‘normal’ and behaves like other healthy young boys. Then we see little Laal overcoming his disability and getting a spot in the armed forces. A romantic connection is also seen between Aamir and Kareena but not much is revealed in the trailer. While sharing the trailer on his Instagram handle, he wrote, "Experience the extraordinary journey of #LaalSinghChaddha, a simple man whose heart is filled with love, hope and warmth. #LaalSinghChaddhaTrailer out now!
