Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement is not beneficial for the Maldives Economy. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal he said that the operationalization of FTA is impacting Maldives govt revenue. 

The Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in December 2017 during the administration of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, it marked the Maldives' first FTA with any country. The FTA has been effective since January 2025. India, a traditional partner, expressed concerns in early 2025, warning that the FTA could affect Maldives’ economic health and influence Indian policies in the region.

Nasheed, 56, was&nbsp;president of Maldives from 2008 to 2012. He also served as the Speaker of Parliament (the People's Majlis) from 2019 to 2023.

Reacting to the development, Parliament's Communications Director Hassan Ziyau said Nasheed didn’t inform the parliament before moving to Ghana.&nbsp;

Earlier in December 2023, Nasheed announced he was taking a break from active politics to serve as the CVF’s secretary general. Nasheed’s presidency saw several protests erupt in the country, coupled with constitutional crises and corruption scandals.

However, while announcing his retirement, Nasheed expressed contentment with the positive outcomes of his political journey.

Police said the bikini-clad woman, who was walking on a main road, was "inappropriately" dressed and allegedly unruly and drunk.

In the video, the woman was heard shouting "you're sexually assaulting me" during the incident.

The Speaker, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/maldives-supreme-court-acquits-former-president-mohamed-nasheed-179477">Mohamed Nasheed</a>, told parliament he was extending an apology to the woman over the incident, which saw her detained by police for two hours before they released her.

A police statement on Friday called on tourists to respect "cultural sensitivities and local regulations".

The video of the incident also sparked anger among Maldivians. Some took to social media to criticise the tourist's behaviour after other videos showed her grabbing the sunglasses of a police officer.

Former foreign minister Dunya Maumoon criticised both the tourist and the police.

"She should have respected the religious and cultural norms of the country in terms of modest attire in a residential area," Maumoon said on Twitter.

WION: What was the main focus of your India visit?&nbsp;

Mohamed Nasheed: We have come here on the invitation of the speaker of Lok Sabha and met with the speaker of both the houses of the Parliament and the foreign secretary as well as the Prime Minister. I visited Gujarat and met the state minister and the speaker of the state's legislative body. It has been an extensive visit and the first time I am visiting after the Parliamentary elections.

WION: What were the key issues you discussed?

Mohamed Nasheed: Three key issues that&nbsp;the Maldives is worried about. One is to see and make it certain that the Islamic State is not firmly established in the Maldives, to identify it and to uproot it and to destroy and to see that its ideology and view are not circulated, propagated in the country. That is one issue where we need assistance, ideas and cooperation. Among other issues&nbsp;is our debt to China. We feel that the debt is not real and the amount of assets created through quoted prices is not equal and therefore it will be very difficult for us to pay back via the assets created because it doesn't match to the debt. That is worrying and we must find ways to restructure them. We also spoke about climate change extensively and we are encouraged to believe that India is exactly on the same page as the Maldives. In 2008, when we went to Copenhagen, Indian government was not able to back the Maldives in its advocacy of 1.5 degrees. Right now, India is championing 1.5 degrees and is maintaining its carbon emission commitments. Looks like India will be able to meet its commitments well before the deadlines. &nbsp;

WION: Are you going ahead with the Maldives-China FTA?

Mohamed Nasheed: The FTA is dead. It is not proceeding and it has to come to the parliament first for it to be implemented. I don't see our parliamentarians having the appetite for it. In terms of other construction contracts, we must get the contracts done. We can't stop them halfway. It will not do any good to anyone. WION: You talked about terror, the issue of Islamic State.&nbsp;How can India help you fight the scourge?

Mohamed Nasheed: India has around 200 million Muslims, it has the largest Muslim population&nbsp;and not one person went to fight in the civil war in Syria. So India must have done&nbsp;something good, something appropriate. We can learn a lot from India.&nbsp;Close cooperation exists between both the countries. We are very confident that we have a good grip on the situation and we feel&nbsp;the Maldives will be safe. Our police will be keeping a close watch on who is doing what.&nbsp;

WION: Your view on the Citizenship Amendment Bill?

Mohamed Nasheed: It is an internal matter for the Indian people. We have a lot of faith in the Indian democracy. I have not gone in the intricacies of the bill but one of the founding ideas of India is that anyone persecuted on the basis of religion for whatever reasons will be given a safe haven in India. Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik wanted to enter The Maldives but his request was turned down by the government of the island nation.

Naik, who has been living in Malaysia for the last three years, is facing charges of inciting communal disharmony and committing unlawful activities in India. He is also facing probe both in India and Bangladesh in connection with the terror attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka on July 2016.

In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met his Malaysian counterpart, Mahathir Mohamad, on the sidelines of the 5th East Economic Forum in Russia.

Following their meeting, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had said that the two leaders discussed the extradition of Naik.

The statement informed that welcoming Speaker Nasheed, Prime Minister noted that "engagement between the two Parliaments is a key component of the vibrant India-Maldives relationship and expressed confidence that this visit will help consolidate bridges of friendship between the two sides."

The Prime Minister recalled his last visit to the Male earlier this year when he also addressed the People's Majlis and lauded the continued strong leadership of Speaker Nasheed to the cause of deepening and strengthening democracy in the Maldives.

"The Prime Minister reaffirmed India's commitment to continue to work closely with the Government of the Maldives for a stable, prosperous and peaceful Maldives wherein the aspirations of the friendly Maldivian are fulfilled," said the statement.

On his part, Nasheed thanked the Prime Minister for his continued support for a stronger India-Maldives relationship since the formation of the new government in the Maldives last year.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for the "development cooperation initiatives undertaken in the Maldives for the welfare of the Maldivian people."

The meeting comes at a time when the Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid is on a visit to India.

The Maldives Saturday called for international help to rehabilitate up to 160 of its nationals languishing in Syrian detention camps after the defeat of the Islamic State group.

Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said the Maldives kept a close tab on citizens who had joined the militant group, but that the island nation was not ready to accept them back without an internationally supervised reintegration programme.

Visiting neighbouring Sri Lanka where 258 people were killed in jihadi attacks recently, Nasheed said the question of foreign IS fighters in Syria should be addressed as a global issue.

As many as 160 Maldivians are thought to be held in detention camps after the fall of IS in March.

"We do not know the situation they have gone through. We don’t have the capacity to rehabilitate these people to the extent that they will not have a further impact on society," Nasheed said.

"I think the international community should join together and decide what we should do to the returnees. Hopefully, there is an international arrangement where they are first received, not necessarily to their countries of origin or nationality."

He said the Maldives was concerned about the 30 to 40 children said to be of Maldivian parents now living in detention camps in Syria, but insisted that there should be international involvement to screen the parents.

"I don't think we should say they can come back in the first flight they can catch," he added.

Nasheed said the nation of 340,000 Sunni Muslims was keeping a close watch on any attempt to radicalise its population, which is known to practise a liberal form of Islam -- and relies heavily on luxury tourism.

More than two-thirds of the Maldivian parliament was spending a three-day holiday in Sri Lanka, to demonstrate it was safe for foreigners to visit the island after the deadly Easter Sunday attacks, Nasheed said.
