The Russian missile had hit a cafe in Hroza on Friday (Oct 6) where people gathered to mourn a fallen Ukrainian soldier. Amid repeated accusations by Kyiv that Moscow is deliberately targeting its civilians, the Kremlin yet again denied the allegations.&nbsp;

“The Russians killed 59 people with a direct hit with an Iskander (missile) on the village of Hroza,” said Klymenko on Telegram.

He added, “All victims are local residents. They were pensioners, medics, farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs. All were civilians. Entire families of several generations died.”&nbsp;

The death toll is said to be one of the highest ones among civilians in any single Russian strike in nearly 20 months of the ongoing Ukraine war. Klymenko said forensic experts worked round the clock for six days to identify the victims.&nbsp;

The experts also required mobile DNA laboratories to identify 19 people. One 60-year-old man was identified only after 20 body parts were collected.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian security service SBU on Wednesday (Oct 11)&nbsp;accused two villagers who it said had fled to Russia of helping guide the missile strike.&nbsp;

<h2>Romania finds ‘drone crater’&nbsp;</h2>

Romania, a NATO member and country which borders Ukraine, found a “drone crater” on Thursday after Russia bombarded a Ukrainian port on the Danube river, said Bucharest’s defence ministry.&nbsp;

The country had also found <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/romania-finds-suspected-russian-drone-fragments-on-its-territory-near-ukraine-border-634282">drone debris</a> several times near its border with Ukraine, last month, prompting them to build air-raid shelters in the eastern Romanian village of Plauru.&nbsp;

“Around 5:00 am (local time), the teams on the ground reported the discovery of a drone crater – with a possible explosion on impact – in a vegetated area... about three kilometres west of Plauru,” said the defence ministry in a statement.&nbsp;

“The Ministry of National Defence strongly condemns the attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against targets and elements of civilian infrastructure in Ukrainian Danube ports,” it added. Romania also said that they would work with NATO to investigate the incident.&nbsp;

<h2>Czech Republic and Denmark to send arms</h2>

The Czech Republic and Denmark “in the months to come” will send nearly 50 armoured vehicles and combat tanks, 2,500 handguns, 7,000 rifles, 500 machine guns and 500 sniper rifles to Ukraine as part of a joint project and based on the “demand and needs” of Ukraine’s armed forces, said the Czech defence ministry, on Thursday.&nbsp;

The ammunition will be the first phase of the project which also includes intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance equipment and large-calibre ammunition.&nbsp;

“This is a substantial donation of equipment, for which there is great demand in Ukraine,” said the Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.&nbsp;

As a part of their next phase, Prague and Copenhagen expect to provide the Ukrainian army with 500 heavy machine guns, 280 auto-loading cannons, 7,000 anti-tank weapons, 10,000 hand grenades and 60 mortar systems.&nbsp;

US Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said Australia's contribution to the three-way AUKUS agreement, which includes Britain, "doesn't always have to be dollars".

The pact was signed in late 2021 and is seen as a way of countering China's growing clout in the Asia-Pacific region.

Work under AUKUS has so far focused on supplying Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, a fleet capable of travelling stealthily over vast distances and striking foes at long range.

But the pact is increasingly focused on developing advanced capabilities such as long-range precision firing, artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons.

Wormuth said Australia could be a proving ground for these weapons.

"One thing Australia has in spades is long distances and relatively unpopulated land," she told AFP in a telephone interview from Washington.

"Australia obviously has a tremendous amount of territory where that testing is a little bit more doable -- so I think that's a unique thing, as an example, that the Australians bring to the table."

China has denounced the AUKUS pact as undermining peace in the region -- a charge that Washington, Canberra and London reject.

But critics have also asked whether it is truly cooperative, or whether the United States, because of its size and overwhelming military power, will dominate.

Wormuth said she expected the two smaller partners to pitch in and "have skin in this game -- and they do".

"The sense I got certainly from talking to senior Australian officials is they're not doing this to make us happy, they're not doing this just for fun," said the Pentagon official, who visited Australia last week for the Talisman Sabre multinational military exercise.

"They're doing this because they see it as in their own national interest in terms of being able to meet the different challenges that they see in the theatre."

<h2>'Prohibitively expensive'</h2>

Facing Russia's war in Europe, threats from North Korea and a more bellicose China, the United States has sought to bolster its defence alliances and put more advanced capabilities into the hands of allies like Australia, Ukraine and Taiwan.

For much of the Cold War, it was Washington's policy to be able to fight two major wars at once.

Wormuth admitted that today, budget constraints, US public opinion and the relative strength of Russia and China make such a doctrine impossible.

"I think there is a recognition that when you look at the size of our military, when you look at the size of the defence budget that the American taxpayer is willing to pay for, we... don't plan to fight more than one major war at a time," she said.

Instead, the United States hopes its alliance and nuclear arsenal will "discourage opportunistic aggression".

"Given the sophistication of the Russian military and the Chinese military today, to try to size our military to hypothetically handle two wars at a time would be prohibitively expensive".

The incident took place on Monday (May 29) and the missile came crashing during a rare daytime attack on the capital city. However, no injuries were reported. In the recorded video, the missile crashed in the middle of the road as it narrowly missed two white cars. 
 
The missile first broke the overhead wire displaying street signs and traffic lights before it crashed into the road and exploded. As it crashed, fragments of the missile and the electronic device blasted towards the camera.

<h2>People not intimidated by Russia's strikes</h2>

The head of Ukraine's military intelligence warned that they will quickly respond to a series of missile strikes carried out by Moscow on Kyiv. 
 
General Kyrylo Budanov stated that the attacks that took place on Monday failed to intimidate the residents of the city, who continued with daily life.

According to state media, North Korea warned of causing "extreme uneasiness and horror" to enemies.

"The development of the new-type ICBM Hwasongpho-18 will extensively reform the strategic deterrence components of the DPRK, radically promote the effectiveness of its nuclear counterattack posture and bring about a change in the practicality of its offensive military strategy," said a report by the&nbsp;KCNA news agency.&nbsp;

The purpose of the test launch was to confirm&nbsp;the performance of the high-power solid-fuel multi-stage engines, the stage separation technology, and the reliability of the control systems with different functions, and to evaluate the military effectiveness of the new strategic weapons system.&nbsp;

Photographs released by state media showed supreme leader Kim Jong Un- accompanied by his daughter watching the missile blast off in a cloud of smoke, and smiling in jubilation after the purportedly successful launch.

Kim said the new weapon would greatly recognise North Korea's&nbsp;strategic deterrence and reinforce the effectiveness of its nuclear counterattack, the KCNA reported.&nbsp;
