A missile fired at a merchant vessel in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebel group did not cause any damage to the ship, said the marine security monitors on Friday (March 15) as the Houthis threaten to expand their campaign that has caused disruptions in the global trade.

The Royal Navy's UK Marine Trade Operations and security firm Ambrey had earlier reported that the vessel was damaged after being struck west of the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida in the early hours of Friday.

However, after a daylight inspection, it turned out that the ship had not been impacted by the projectile attack and had also not sustained any damage.

Ambrey stated that the "vessel was listed as Israel-affiliated but had changed ownership in February 2024".

It further added that the merchant ship was headed from Singapore to the Suez Canal with armed guards onboard.

The same tanker, the previous day, was almost struck by a missile southeast of Yemen's port of Aden, said Ambrey.

UKMTO said that when the incident was first reported, the ship was 76 nautical miles (140 km) west of the port of Hodeidah, while a second vessel was 50 nautical miles southwest when it reported missiles flying overhead and exploding in the distance.

"The Master reported two missiles flying over the vessel and heard two loud blasts in the distance. The vessel reported no damage and the crew are reported safe. The vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," UKMTO said in an advisory note.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Iran-aligned Houthi group successfully tested a hypersonic missile, as per a claim made by the group to Russian media on Thursday (Mar 14).

Citing a source, news agency Sputnik reported, "Missile forces of the movement have successfully tested a missile that can reach speeds of up to Mach 8 [6,200 miles per hour] and is powered by solid fuel."&nbsp;

"Yemen plans to begin manufacturing it for use in attacks in the Red and Arabian Seas and the Gulf of Aden, as well as against targets in Israel," it added.&nbsp;

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked the United States ship 'Pinocchio' with missiles in the Red Sea, as per a speech by the military spokesperson of the group which was televised early on Tuesday (Mar 12).

“The Yemeni Armed Forces have confirmed that they will continue to prevent Israeli navigation or these (ships) heading to the ports of occupied Palestine in the Red and Arab Seas until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted," he added.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm that their military operations will be escalated, with the help of Allah the Almighty, during the month of Ramadan, the month of jihad, in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and for our mujahideen brothers in the Gaza Strip," the spokesperson said.

<h2>US-British coalition airstrikes kill 11&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, the US-British coalition carried out airstrikes on Monday (Mar 11) on port cities and small towns in western Yemen in which at least 11 people lost their lives and 14 others were injured while defending commercial shipping, said a spokesperson for Yemen’s internationally recognised government, while speaking to Reuters.

In a statement, Magen David Adom's emergency response service said that an anti-tank missile hit "foreign workers who were working in a plantation".&nbsp;

The statement noted that the wounded were all Indian men in their 30s. The official statement didn't reveal the nationality of the person killed.&nbsp;

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that an aid mission to two hospitals in northern Gaza found horrifying scenes of children dying of starvation, amid shortages of food, fuel and medicines.&nbsp;

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency's visits over the weekend to the Al-Awda and Kamal Adwan hospitals "were the first since early October 2023 despite our efforts to gain more regular access to the north of Gaza".&nbsp;

The findings were "grim", he said on X, adding that "the situation at Al-Awda was particularly appalling, as one of the buildings is destroyed".&nbsp;

The Kamal Adwan hospital, the only paediatrics hospital in northern Gaza, was overwhelmed with patients, he said.

The US military's Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed to have carried out another strike on Saturday morning (Jan 27) on a Houthi "anti-ship missile aimed into the Red Sea and which was prepared to launch". 
 
"Forces subsequently struck and destroyed the missile in self-defence," CENTCOM said, in a statement shared on social media platform X. 
 
Houthis' military spokesman Yahya Saree had earlier said that the British oil tanker, named Marlin Luanda, was struck by missiles which were launched by Yemeni naval forces, said the Houthis' military spokesman, Yahya Saree. "The strike was direct, and resulted (in) the burning of the vessel," he said. 
 
Later, CENTCOM, confirming the strike, said, "The ship issued a distress call and reported damage. USS Carney (DDG 64) and other coalition ships have responded and are rendering assistance. No injuries have been reported at this time."

<h2 lang="en-US">Oil tanker on fire in Gulf of Aden</h2>

The Houthis, on Friday (Jan 26), fired an anti-ship ballistic missile towards the Carney in the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, said CENTCOM. 
 
"The missile was successfully shot down by USS Carney. There were no injuries or damage reported," it said. 
 
Earlier, risk monitor Ambrey said that a Panama-flagged oil tanker "reported seeing two blasts" in the Gulf of Aden, which was corroborated by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) of the British Navy. However, no damage was reported on the oil tanker.

The security firm said that the missiles blasted nearly a mile from the India-affiliated oil tanker and 200-300 metres (650-1,000 feet), which was above the waterline. UKMTO said that the missiles were detonated in the water. 
 
In the month of November, the Houthis started targeting Red Sea shipping, stating that they were striking Israeli-linked vessels to express their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian Navy responds to distress call by vessel in Gulf of Aden</h2>

Indian Navy's guided-missile destroyer responded to an SOS call issued by a merchant ship, Marlin Launda, after it was struck by a missile and caught fire in the Gulf of Aden, said the Indian Navy in a statement on Saturday (Jan 27).&nbsp;

There were 22 Indians and a Bangladeshi crew on board. On the basis of the request from MV Merlin Luanda, INS Visakhapatnam sent the Ship's NBCD team along with firefighting equipment to provide assistance to the crew in its firefighting efforts, said the Indian Navy.

"Indian Navy remains steadfast and committed to safeguarding merchant vessels and ensuring safety of life at sea," said the Indian Navy, in the statement.

The Humaita successfully completed its sea trials and has now been delivered and entered into service within the Brazilian Navy. The submarine was&nbsp;commissioned by the Brazilian Navy at the Itaguaí Naval base, in the presence of José Mucio Monteiro, Brazilian minister of defence and Emmanuel Chiva, French General Delegate for Armaments.&nbsp;The first submarine of the ProSub program, the Riachuelo, was commissioned by the Brazilian Navy in September 2022. The remaining two submarines of the series, Tonelero and Angostura will respectively be launched in 2024 and 2025.

As part of the Brazilian ProSub programme, Scorpene submarines are manufactured and assembled in the shipyard built in Itaguaí by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN). Naval Group, France, contributed to this programme by transferring technology, supplying the submarine design, the equipment that makes up the submarines and technical assistance. Teams from the ICN shipyard have also been trained in submarine construction techniques in France&nbsp;as part of a vast training programme for Brazilian welders, formers, pipe fitters and electricians. This training, along with technical assistance, enables ICN to master the entire production process, the Naval Group said.&nbsp;

North Korea on Monday (Jan 15) announced it had tested a new solid-fuel immediate-range hypersonic missile, according to state news agency KCNA, a day after South Korea said its arch-rival had fired an unidentified ballistic missile towards the East Sea.&nbsp;

Pyongyang said the missile launch was aimed at testing the reliability of new multi-stage, high-trust solid fuel engines and that it did not pose a security threat to the neighbouring countries.&nbsp;

"The test-fire was aimed at verifying the gliding and manoeuvring characteristics of intermediate-range hypersonic manoeuvrable controlled warhead and the reliability of newly developed multi-stage high-thrust solid-fuel engines. The test fire was successfully conducted," said KCNA.&nbsp;

"The launch never affected the security of any neighbouring country and had nothing to do with the regional situation," it added.&nbsp;

The state agency did not mention if leader Kim Jong-Un was present at the site to oversee the launch.&nbsp;

According to reports, the testing of the hypersonic missile was the first launch by Pyongyang this year which is now attempting to develop weapons with enhanced precision and ability to better penetrate missile defences.&nbsp;

The launch also comes after Kim branded South Korea his principal enemy and warned he would not hesitate to annihilate Seoul, as he toured major weapons factories last week.

"The historic time has come at last when we should define as a state most hostile toward the Democratic People's Republic of Korea the entity called the Republic of Korea (South Korea)," said Kim.&nbsp;

When it comes to last week, on December 13, the tanker Mt Ardmore Encounter faced a missile attack from Yemen's Hodeidah, with two missiles being launched.

Simultaneously, a US Navy ship successfully intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle near Port Hodeidah. The following day, on December 14, MV Maersk Gibraltar became the target of a ballistic missile attack north of the Bab el Mandeb strait.

Fortunately, the missile exploded nearby, ensuring the safety of both the crew and the vessel. Two incidents unfolded on December 15, involving projectiles hitting vessels. MV Al Jasrah was struck by a projectile, and concurrently, MSC Palatium III was hit by a missile, both incidents originating from the Yemen region. In both cases, all crew members were reported safe.
