A missile fired at a merchant vessel in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebel group did not cause any damage to the ship, said the marine security monitors on Friday (March 15) as the Houthis threaten to expand their campaign that has caused disruptions in the global trade.

The Royal Navy's UK Marine Trade Operations and security firm Ambrey had earlier reported that the vessel was damaged after being struck west of the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida in the early hours of Friday.

However, after a daylight inspection, it turned out that the ship had not been impacted by the projectile attack and had also not sustained any damage.

Ambrey stated that the "vessel was listed as Israel-affiliated but had changed ownership in February 2024".

It further added that the merchant ship was headed from Singapore to the Suez Canal with armed guards onboard.

The same tanker, the previous day, was almost struck by a missile southeast of Yemen's port of Aden, said Ambrey.

UKMTO said that when the incident was first reported, the ship was 76 nautical miles (140 km) west of the port of Hodeidah, while a second vessel was 50 nautical miles southwest when it reported missiles flying overhead and exploding in the distance.

"The Master reported two missiles flying over the vessel and heard two loud blasts in the distance. The vessel reported no damage and the crew are reported safe. The vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," UKMTO said in an advisory note.

The Brazilian Navy inducted 'Humaita', the second Scorpene submarine that was built domestically, based on technology transfer from the French firm Naval Group. This is part of Brazil's ProSub programme that aims to enhance their Navy's submarine force with four new conventional (diesel-electric) Scorpene submarines and the development of an indigenous Nuclear-powered submarine.

In recent years, the French-origin Scorpene submarines have had many takers with the Indian Navy inducting six of them, and two each being added to the fleets of Malaysia and Chile.

Scorpene is a modern, high-performant, and stealthy submarine, that is designed for ocean-going and for shallow waters operations. It can undertake a wide range of missions such as Anti-Surface & Anti-Submarine Warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering. Stealthy and fast, these submarines have a level of automation that requires a limited number of crew, which reduces their operating costs significantly.

North Korea on Monday (Jan 15) announced it had tested a new solid-fuel immediate-range hypersonic missile, according to state news agency KCNA, a day after South Korea said its arch-rival had fired an unidentified ballistic missile towards the East Sea.

Pyongyang said the missile launch was aimed at testing the reliability of new multi-stage, high-trust solid fuel engines and that it did not pose a security threat to the neighbouring countries.

"The test-fire was aimed at verifying the gliding and manoeuvring characteristics of intermediate-range hypersonic manoeuvrable controlled warhead and the reliability of newly developed multi-stage high-thrust solid-fuel engines. The test fire was successfully conducted," said KCNA.

"The launch never affected the security of any neighbouring country and had nothing to do with the regional situation," it added.

The state agency did not mention if leader Kim Jong-Un was present at the site to oversee the launch.

According to reports, the testing of the hypersonic missile was the first launch by Pyongyang this year which is now attempting to develop weapons with enhanced precision and ability to better penetrate missile defences.

The launch also comes after Kim branded South Korea his principal enemy and warned he would not hesitate to annihilate Seoul, as he toured major weapons factories last week.

"The historic time has come at last when we should define as a state most hostile toward the Democratic People's Republic of Korea the entity called the Republic of Korea (South Korea)," said Kim.

An American destroyer intercepted two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen on Saturday (Dec 30).

The incident unfolded as the destroyer responded to a distress call from the Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged container ship, which had been targeted in a missile strike while transiting the Red Sea.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the missiles originated from territory controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

This marked the 23rd reported illegal attack on international shipping by the Houthis since November 19, as per CENTCOM.

The rebels, who claim to be targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels, have been launching attacks on vessels in the crucial Red Sea shipping lane, threatening up to 12 percent of global trade.

The USS Gravely and USS Laboon, both destroyers, promptly answered the distress call from the Maersk Hangzhou. While assisting the container ship, the USS Gravely successfully intercepted the incoming missiles.

It's worth noting that the Houthis have stated that their attacks on shipping are in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

The recent escalation in the conflict began with a cross-border attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, resulting in significant casualties. The United States swiftly provided military aid to Israel, which has since conducted a sustained campaign in Gaza, leading to civilian casualties.

This situation has sparked outrage in the Middle East and fueled attacks by armed groups across the region opposed to Israel. Additionally, US forces in Iraq and Syria have faced repeated drone and rocket attacks, attributed to Iran-backed armed groups, further escalating tensions in the region.

American destroyer thwarts Yemeni missile attack on Red Sea shipping

In a concerning development, the Red Sea region has witnessed a significant surge in maritime security incidents, including missile attacks over the past two months, with the week from December 14 to 20 reporting the highest number of incidents in this period.

According to data released by the Gurugram-based Information Fusion Centre - Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), there were nine maritime security threats last week, a stark increase from the previous weeks.

The primary cause behind this escalation appears to have been the uptick in Houthi attacks originating from Yemen.

The Houthi rebels have been targeting vessels they suspect are heading to or from Israel, a response to Israeli actions in Gaza. Israel's substantial offensive in Gaza was triggered by a terror attack by Hamas in October.

During the week spanning from December 14 to 20, a staggering nine maritime security threats were reported, marking a significant escalation compared to the preceding week of December 7 to 13, which documented only two such incidents.

The trend of rising security concerns continued from the week of November 30 to December 6, where five incidents were recorded.

In the preceding weeks, the situation unfolded with two incidents from November 23 to 29, a singular incident from November 16 to 22, and a notably calm week from November 9 to 15, with no reported incidents.

When it comes to last week, on December 13, the tanker Mt Ardmore Encounter faced a missile attack from Yemen's Hodeidah, with two missiles being launched.

Simultaneously, a US Navy ship successfully intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle near Port Hodeidah. The following day, on December 14, MV Maersk Gibraltar became the target of a ballistic missile attack north of the Bab el Mandeb strait.

Fortunately, the missile exploded nearby, ensuring the safety of both the crew and the vessel. Two incidents unfolded on December 15, involving projectiles hitting vessels. MV Al Jasrah was struck by a projectile, and concurrently, MSC Palatium III was hit by a missile, both incidents originating from the Yemen region. In both cases, all crew members were reported safe.

December 16 and 18 each witnessed two incidents. On December 16, a US Navy ship took down 14 unmanned aerial vehicles in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, while a UK Navy ship shot down another UAV off the Yemen coast. On December 18, MT Swan Atlantic faced a projectile attack resulting in an explosion on the port quarter of the vessel.

Similarly, MSC Clara reported an explosion in the vicinity of Mokha, Yemen. Importantly, in both instances, the vessel and crew members were reported safe.

Throughout December, as indicated by the released data, incidents involving vessels being struck by missiles and the interception of drones have been recurrent.

A notable instance occurred on December 3 when three maritime security threats were documented. In the Bab el Mandab strait, a missile hit a Panama-flagged container vessel.

Concurrently, the Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier, Unity Explorer, faced a missile strike resulting in minor damages. The same day witnessed a drone missile attack targeting the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Sophie II in the Bab el Mandab.

Moving forward to December 11, the Norway-flagged tanker Strinda experienced a missile strike. In this case, a US Naval ship assisted and escorted the damaged vessel.

Amid the crisis in the Red Sea, India has been backing free movement of commercial shipping. Earlier in the week, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "have been supportive of the free movement of commercial shipping. So that is something that we are interested in".

He highlighted that India is "monitoring the developments there" and has been "part of efforts to ensure the safe transit of ships in the Arabian Sea and we value the free movement of commercial shipping".

The situation has prompted major shipping companies to rethink their routes, pausing passage through the Red Sea and opting for longer, alternative routes. This shift is likely to have a profound impact on global trade, potentially leading to disruptions in the supply chain and subsequently affecting oil and food prices. The extended travel times for vessels may contribute to increased global inflation.

Iran hit back at the UK, France, and Germany for jointly condemning its recent missile advances, specifically the unveiling of the Fattah-2 ballistic missile, which Tehran says is "hypersonic."

In a joint statement, the E3 countries expressed concern and said, "Iran continues to develop its missile programme despite repeated international calls to halt it, and after years of disregarding UN restrictions."

The Fattah-2, equipped with an advanced warhead and hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), was showcased at the Ashura Aerospace Science and Technology University in Tehran on November 19.

Fattah, translating to "conquer" in Farsi, represents an advanced iteration of its initial domestically produced hypersonic ballistic missile, also named "Fattah".

The new version boasts several notable features. It's HGV warhead is capable of maneuvering and gliding at incredibly high speeds, capable of evading air defence systems.

Propelled by a liquid-fuel rocket propellant, the precision-guided two-stage missile exhibits a striking range of 1500 kilometres. It also achieves a velocity of Mach 15, equating to 15 times the speed of sound, equivalent to 18522 kilometres per hour, as per reports.

The lifting of sanctions, reports say, allows Iran to sell its drones, ballistic missiles, and related technologies, potentially generating revenue for supporting militant and terror proxies in the Middle East.

"The E3 remain committed to taking every diplomatic step to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and to holding Iran to account for its destabilising activity around the region and internationally," the statement read.
