Considering his mother is such an illustrious filmmaker, it is rather surprising that he has never been too keen about the world of cinema. I think he can be engaged in the world in some way to make a difference. He is very very interested in that, " Nair had said at that time.<br />

<p>Mira Nair, two episodes of whose six-part television series 'A Suitable Boy' will close the 45th Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, received the Jeff Skoll Award for Impact Media on Monday evening at a remotely conducted TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony.<br />

The presentation of the award to Nair was initiated by Tabu, star of 'A Suitable Boy' as well as the director's critically acclaimed 2006 drama 'The Namesake'.<br />
<br />
The actor said, "When Mira Nair was a kid, she asked herself, can art change the world? She has proven it can."<br />
And in doing so, the filmmaker has, Tabu added, set "the very highest standards of cinema."<br />

Nair was one of six recipients of the TIFF Tribute Awards alongside octogenarian actor Sir Anthony Hopkins, Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet, Chinese-American filmmaker Chloe Zhao (whose Venice Golden Lion-winning 'Nomadland' is one of the highlights of TIFF 2020), indigenous Canadian director Tracey Deer and musician Terence Blanchard.<br />

<p>Mira Nair is all set to adapt Vikram Seth classic ‘A Suitable Boy’ for a special six part TV show. And she has already zeroed in on the lead cast. Nair’s film will star Tabu, Ishaan Khatter and newcomer Taniya Maniktala- who will play the central character of Lata in the film.<br />

Ishaan, who &nbsp;who made a splash in the films ‘Beyond The Clouds’ and ‘Dhadak’ last year, took to Instagram to announce his new project which will be aired on BBC one. “Elated to announce that I’ll be playing Maan Kapoor in @pagliji ’s and @bbcone ‘s official adaptation of Vikram Seth’s ‘A Suitable Boy’. It’s not only my pleasure but an honour to be working on this illustrious material alongside such distinguished artists and technicians led by the indomitable Mira Nair. <p>It is a tale charting the fortunes of four large families and exploring India and its rich and varied culture at a crucial point in its history.</p>

<p>"Vikram tells the story of a free India and our people with wit, clarity and love -- I am deeply honoured to be the one bringing this intimate, epic tale of an unseen India to the world," Mira said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Today, `A Suitable Boy` is timelier than ever. With a mix of legendary and cutting-edge actors from the subcontinent, shooting entirely on location in palaces, villages and streets across northern India, we will keep the history and dream of an alternate India alive."</p>

<p>Ishaan will be seen as Maan who is determined to enjoy life to the full whatever the consequences, much to the concern of his politician father. He is infatuated with courtesan Saaeda Bai (Tabu).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The six-part series, which will be distributed by BBC Studios, is filming at a number of locations across India including Lucknow and Maheshwar.</p>

<p>Venice Golden Lion-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, who is in Cannes this year as the mentor of the Institut Francais' La Fabrique program, is all set to begin filming her long-in-gestation adaptation of Vikram Seth's best-selling novel 'A Suitable Boy' in September in Delhi and other locations across northern India.</p>

<p>"I'm already deep into the project, which is a BBC series of six one-hour episodes. The casting is 80 percent done," she told PTI in an interview here.&nbsp;<br />
However, she has yet to take the final call on who will play Lata, the young woman at the heart of the sprawling story.</p>

<p>"I've been looking for an actress to play Lata for six months now. A major movie star wants to do it. I would love to have her on board. But I am also looking at a couple of unknown possibilities. I cannot, therefore, declare a name because it is still cooking," said Nair.</p>

<p>Her connection with 'A Suitable Boy' goes back to 1994, the year the book was published.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I simply love the book. I tried to get the rights when it was written," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But it was too big and too hard to adapt at that point. So, I created my own microcosmic response to the huge epic by making my own intimate 'Monsoon Wedding'. It is great to be going back to it."</p>

<p>A large part of the ensemble cast for 'A Suitable Boy'&nbsp;is already in place and among the names, Nair mentions are Tabu, Shefali Shah, Vivek Gomber, Rasika Dugal and Vivaan Shah.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She is also close to signing up Naseeruddin Shah in a key role.</p>

<p>"We would love to premiere 'A Suitable Boy' in a major film festival," said Nair.&nbsp;</p>

<p>''In fact, we'd like to bring it to Cannes. We'll be finished in time for the festival in 2020. But if not Cannes, then Venice."</p>

<p>''The other big Mira Nair project that will premiere in 2020 ? in July, to be precise ? is a stage musical version of "Monsoon Wedding".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am shooting all of this year and then editing 'A Suitable Boy'. 'Monsoon Wedding' will be first staged in Roundhouse Theatre after the BBC series is wrapped," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first Indian filmmaker to win the Cannes Camera d'Or ? for "Salaam Bombay" in 1988? she failed to get either "Monsoon Wedding" or "The Namesake" into the Cannes Film Festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was dejected, and grateful in hindsight, that 'Monsoon Wedding' was rejected by Cannes. But I came to the Cannes Film Market and the film was sold to virtually every major territory," she recalled.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Monsoon Wedding" eventually went to Venice and the rest is history.</p>

<p>Asked why Indian films have been finding it difficult to crack Cannes of late, she said, "The onus isn't only on us. The answer also lies in what the French are looking for, and who they want to champion."&nbsp;</p>
