Indian students not to be deported immediately, task force to investigate: Canadian minister

"While I will take a day or two to process this latest development, I intend to be back in Parliament soon where I will continue to represent my Glasgow Southside constituents to the very best of my ability.”

Police earlier confirmed that 52-year-old Sturgeon was taken into custody as a suspect and was being questioned by detectives.

In 2021, an investigation was initiated by Scotland Police following complaints regarding the Scottish National Party's utilisation of a fund exceeding £600,000. This fund had been raised by activists with the specific intention of being allocated solely for campaigning in support of Scottish independence.

"I'm a human being...of course I've got regrets about all sorts of things". I'm proud of my time as first minister.&nbsp;Maybe I want to spend a bit of time on Nicola Sturgeon, the human being. Does that sound selfish? Chinese police outposts are often under the radar by the authorities in countries such as the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, or the US for allegedly instilling fear into Chinese citizens living overseas and stomping its control to throttle criticism of the ruling Communist Party.&nbsp;

In an interview with CTV’s Question Period Marco Mendicino said,&nbsp;"I am confident that the [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] have taken concrete action to disrupt any foreign interference in relation to those so-called police stations, and that if new police stations are popping up and so on, that they will continue to take decisive action going forward."&nbsp;

These Chinese outpost facilities are allegedly run under the directions of China in locations outside its mainland territory.&nbsp;Though Chinese people running these establishments claim that these outposts are to cater to the issues faced by the Chinese community living in the country, it is still unclear as to what purposes these outposts really serve.&nbsp;

As per a few reports, these facilities are intimidating Chinese activists living abroad who speak out against the CCP led by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It's important to note that the establishment of Chinese outposts is a complex geopolitical issue, often subject to territorial disputes, criticism, and concerns from other countries in the regions where they are located.

In Canada, the police in the month of March said they were investigating the centres&nbsp;in Montreal. This month, the Canadian press reported that these centres&nbsp;were operating normally. This is despite the fact that the statements by the minister that all of these 'secret' stations in Canada have been closed down. As far as China is concerned, the country has refuted all claims made in connection to these police outposts.&nbsp;

Canadian minister flags potential presence of more 'Chinese outposts' in country

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan stated that 1250 Indians have been brought to Jeddah from Port Sudan under the ongoing Indian government evacuation efforts, Operation Kaveri.

Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal from Jeddah, Minister Muraleedharan said,'' the government of India will be to bring every Indian safe and secure back to India and we will continue the effort to bring them out of the conflict zone."

The minister is on the ground in the Saudi city which has been the nerve center of Indian evacuation.&nbsp;

According to Indian govt estimates, around 3400 Indians are in the conflict-torn country, with ongoing evacuation efforts focusing on evacuation by road, sea and air.

During the interview, he was joined by General Abdullah, the commander and the chief of the King Abdullah air base where Indians are being brought, and explained, "It is our duty towards our friends. I hope we did the right thing."

V Muraleedharan: I am here in Jeddah, King Abdullah air base where the C130 Flight from port Sudan has landed. You can see my background, the Indians from Karnataka who have come from port Sudan. They have reached here and after immigration and they will be accommodated in a transit facility and take them back to India.

WION: The challenges faced by you in the evacuation efforts? 
V Muraleedharan: This evacuation that is happening. I will term it as happening in four stages. The first stage is bringing all those who are in the conflict zones to comparatively safer zones in Khartoum. Then the road travels which amounts to around 800 kilometres from Khartoum to Port Sudan. And from there, both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy are involved. Indian Air Force has deployed 2 C130 planes, as well as Indian Navy's INS Sumedha and INS Teg. They have done one trip each and we have INS Tarkesh also. So this is the facility that we are utilizing to bring the Indians from the Port Sudan to Jeddah. In Jeddah, we have a control room functioning for almost a week where the transit facility is here. All the Indian air force planes are landing at the King Abdullah air base of the Saudi Royal Air Force. Here all the arrangements are being done by the Saudi authorities for immigration, for even refreshments. From here they are being taken to the transit facility. So the most crucial part is the almost 800-kilometer journey from Khartoum to Port Sudan where without any problems, and issues they need to be brought in by road. We have been successful, till now 1250 Indians have reached Jeddah. Maybe tomorrow we'll be able to transport the rest of those who are in the transit facility.

WION: If you can give details of the Indian nationals who are still in Sudan? How many Indians are still in Sudan that need to be evacuated? 
V Muraleedharan: &nbsp;As per our estimate, the number of Indians who have either registered with the Indian embassy or the Indian Embassy is in touch with them. The number amounts to around 3400 of which now, almost 1250 have reached Jeddah. Rest of them, I would say are either in Port Sudan or are on there way from Khartoum to port Sudan. Of course, that number altogether would be around 2000. The rest of them, effort is on to bring them also back to Port Sudan, to Jeddah and then India.

WION: So when it comes to all the coordination efforts with foreign countries, if you can give details, role of the Saudi government? 
V Muraleedharan: Saudi Arabia is extremely helpful, supportive. I have with me General Abdullah, the commander and the chief of the King Abdullah air base here. He has personally been with us during the last three days and nights. The whole night we had to stay awake. He was with us throughout, extending all assistance. And I would say that the India-Saudi partnership during this period of evacuation is on full display. The Saudi authorities have been extending all help and support to the Indians who are coming over to provide all the facilities here in the King Abdullah airbase and the External Affairs Minister has personally thanked the Saudi authorities, the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia for the assistance and support that they have been providing in this evacuation.

General Abdullah: It is our duty towards our friends. I hope we did the right thing. What you need for your people. All we have done is done by the order of our king, the crown prince and also the directions of our commander. We are happy to do it, a duty for our brothers. Inshallaha, hope this crisis will finish and this operation will be successful. Anything you want, most welcome for everybody, and all capabilities we have are for you. &nbsp;

WION: What is the message you will send to Indians, and their families still stranded in Sudan. 
V Muraleedharan: As you know, the Prime Minister has already mentioned the effort of the government of India will be to bring every Indian safe and secure back to India and we will continue the effort to bring them out of the conflict zone. Bring them back safely to India.

WION: Are you in touch with any Sudanese Generals? 
V Muraleedharan: &nbsp;I'm focusing on the evacuation efforts. I'm in Jeddah, and that's my mandate. So I'm trying to coordinate these efforts with the Indian authorities, with the Indian Embassy here as well as in Khartoum, as well as the Saudi authorities here the Foreign Ministry of Saudi, the Air Force, the Air Force Base, which is here. So the rest of the things I think we will discuss later.

Exclusive: 1250 Indians evacuated to Jeddah from Sudan, Minister V Muraleedharan to WION

French minister and feminist Marlene Schiappa, who recently posed for Playboy, sparking controversy, said to the magazine she believed that women have the right to pose nude if they want to.

Schiappa, who is currently the country's minister for the social economy and associations, was featured in Playboy's French edition this month which will hit shelves on Thursday, although her photos were already leaked in the French media.

On Wednesday, the minister received fresh criticism from her cabinet colleagues for her stunt. In the photographs which will accompany the 12-page long interview, the minister strikes various poses in revealing outfits of&nbsp;blue, red and white colour of the French tricolour.

The minister called Pamela Anderson her inspiration after the US glamour model said that shooting for Playboy had been “an act of emancipation”.

“Like the Miss France. If they enjoy winning a beauty contest, I find that great too and we should support them,” Schiappa said.

The interview includes various innuendo-laden questions like “is politics an aphrodisiac?”&nbsp;and talks about the minister's past as an erotic novelist and author who wrote on issues like the female orgasm.

Some colleagues of the minister were left aghast by the interview's timing which came when France is going through a major political crisis and battling multiple strikes and violent protests over the increase in the retirement age.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne had called Schiappa to inform her that the unauthorised shoot was “not at all appropriate”, meanwhile, Equalities Minister Isabelle Rome broke the magazine's cover to criticise the initiative.

The Taliban regime grabbed power immediately after US-led coalition forces left Afghanistan last year. Initially, the Taliban sought to assure the world that it will not revert to its radical ways as seen during their previous rule in late 1990s. They even said publicly that women would be allowed to attend universities.&nbsp;

However, the regime slowly began to roll back social progress that had been achieved in two decades under US-supported regime. Primary schools for girls were shut and unreasonable social restrictions on women made return.

The latest in the backward journey was Taliban's decision to prohibit women from going to universities.

The decision has already drawn sharp reactions from the United States and the United Nations

"It's another very troubling move and it's difficult to imagine how the country can develop, deal with all of the challenges that it has, without active participation of women and the education of women," said Stephen Dujarric, United Nations spokesperson.

Harin Fernando, a Member of Parliament representing the opposition, had recently joined Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government and was sown in as the new Minister of Tourism and Lands, irking his party Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB).

He said had that he joined the government to help Wickremesinghe in uplifting Sri Lanka’s battered economy, but his party members viewed it as a sign of betrayal.

In an exclusive conversation with WION correspondent Dasuni Athauda, Fernando opened up on a range of issues—from his party members seeking his dismissal, to revealing why he joined the government.

He also blamed the brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for the widespread violence that erupted on May 9 between the anti-government agitators and supporters of Mahinda.

WION: Is the new govt unstable and can it run smoothly?

Fernando: It's a risk…a challenge, but we are working through these challenging times and doing our jobs. Like I am taking care of my department and trying to fix it, make the tourists visit Sri Lanka.

WION: As of now, whom are you representing, the government or the opposition?

Fernando: I am still an opposition MP in the cabinet. I think (PM) Ranil's intentions are honest. I believe that this man is taking the challenge, and it is my duty is to support him. It's not about anyone’s personal interest, he is only trying to stabilise (the economy). I hope Sri Lankan people view it without any judgements.

WION:&nbsp; Your party, SJB, is working to suspend you. Your political career is hanging&nbsp;in balance. What are your views?

Fernando: Well, it is. But what bothers me right now is not my personal (interest), it's quite common for a politician. But I think about my country. But I have to confess that in six months we might not have a country. So, I had to take this challenge. Tough times make a tough man. I wanted to take this challenge.

WION: Days after assuming your responsibilities, you wanted the government to push for the 21st amendment of the Constitution (aimed at curbing the unfettered powers of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa). What made you made you raise this issue?

Fernando: I wanted to bring the 21st amendment and the 22nd amendment ( to ensure that no dual citizen can hold a position as a member of Parliament or be the President of Sri Lanka). I believe it will happen in stages. Even the protestors want it and sought a clear timeline. The bar association gave18. But what I am concerned about is the SJB refusing to support this.

I think more power should be given to the PM as he is responsible to the parliament. Whatever decision he makes, has to be endorsed in the parliament. This is the system we want in the country. 21st amendment should be the priority and the 22nd should be next.

We must set our timelines. Hence, I was very vocal. If they (government) delay it, I will be the first to come out. I joined with a good heart, faith, and intention

WION:&nbsp;In the parliament, you said that the president is failing.&nbsp;However, you are working with him to overcome the crisis. Why?

Fernando: Correct. What matters to me right now is not my personal agenda. Sri Lanka is undergoing one of its worst crisis. If (PM) Ranil hadn’t taken the charge, I would have assumed the power by now. There are long power cuts and scarcity of fuel. I am being targeted because I joined the government, but I support the call for the ouster of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. I thought that it's better to fight with the dragon rather than stay out and talk about the dragon.

My whole purpose is to make sure that we are stable position, hence I took over the tourism department, which has performed worst. The tourism sector used to generate $5-6 billion in revenue, but now, it is barely generating $1 billion. We hardly can afford this and if this goes on, we will crash. That is why I left party politics and joined for what I believe in.

WION: On May 9, the peaceful protests suddenly turned violent. What was the cause? Who do you think was behind this incident, as a leader of your party was also attacked?

Fernando: I was lucky that I was not attacked that day. I think it is former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa's fault. Any rational person wouldn’t have gone against these protesters. He is actually responsible for this violence. But I think that Mahinda wanted to show his brother… I believe something was brewing internally which got out of control.

People hate politicians and this is a time when the entire country should come together and call it the truth. I now believe that we have to go beyond and let the protest go, to keep the pressure on the president. But we all need to get together to fix the country because it's not looking good.

WION: Do you think the protesters should call it quits now?

Fernando: Not really. I believe Sri Lankans are very nice people. But I feel that the politicians whose houses got attacked are filled with vengeance, and seeking revenge. They know the faces of those who attacked their houses. And it doesn't look good as many people are being arrested, which would not stop.

I fear the next parliament is going to be the worst parliament in Sri Lankan history. It's a dangerous sign.

But we have to come together. Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed a brilliant idea to attract youngsters into politics, there will be oversight committees in the parliament headed by MPs in the parliament. They are trying to rope in three young representatives from the protest.

Sri Lanka's president sacked his energy minister on Thursday as fuel shortages left the near-bankrupt island facing its worst blackouts in 26 years and the nation's buses largely sidelined.

Udaya Gammanpila was booted from the cabinet a day after publicly criticising the government's monetary policy, saying it had worsened the dollar shortage that has slammed oil imports.

Another cabinet member who had accused Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, a younger brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, of mismanagement was also sacked.

"The president used his executive powers to remove Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila with effect from today," presidential spokesman Kingsly Rathnayaka said.

No reason was given for the summary dismissals, but official sources said the president was livid over their scathing attacks on the government's handling of the worsening economic crisis.

As per the report, the Indian economy is estimated to grow by 9.2 per cent in real terms in 2021-22 (as per first advanced estimates) subsequent to a contraction of 7.3 per cent in 2020-21 and the GDP is projected to grow by 8- 8.5 per cent in real terms in 2022-23.

The draft of Sri Lanka's new Constitution has been completed and it is expected to be ready for Parliament's approval by early 2022, Foreign Minister G L Peiris said on Tuesday.

Peiris said that as pledged by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in his presidential election manifesto in 2019, he has appointed a committee of experts to formulate the draft.

This draft has now been completed and awaiting to be sent to the Legal Draftsman,&nbsp;Peiris said, hoping that the final draft would be made available by the turn of the new year.

Sri Lanka has in the past made many attempts to change the current Constitution. Since 1997, all such attempts, including the last in 2015, were aborted after months of deliberations.

In 2019, the ruling alliance was making platform speeches about the abolishment of the country's provincial councils system, which was mooted by India under the thirteenth amendment to the current Constitution adopted in 1978.

The 2017 Act will have to be amended as in 2018, the Parliament had rejected the delimitation report which should have been approved with a two-thirds majority to make the new hybrid system legal.

Rajapaksa since being elected annulled the 19th Amendment adopted in 2015 which had curtailed presidential powers by strengthening the functions of Parliament.

Dutch Foreign Minister&nbsp;Sigrid&nbsp;Kaag&nbsp;resigned on Thursday after parliament formally condemned her handling of the Afghanistan evacuation crisis.

Lawmakers approved a motion criticising the government for failing to evacuate some Afghans, and for missing signs of an imminent Taliban takeover.

Kaag's resignation comes a day after Britain's Dominic Raab was demoted from his position as foreign minister over the way he dealt with the situation in Afghanistan.

"The House considers that the government has acted irresponsibly,"&nbsp;Kaag&nbsp;said in a statement to parliament after parliament voted by 78 votes to 72 to condemn her.

"And although I stand by our commitment, I can only accept the consequences of this judgement as the minister with ultimate responsibility," she added.

"In my view on democracy and the culture of our administration, a minister should go if the policy is disapproved of.&nbsp;I will therefore submit my resignation as minister of foreign affairs to his majesty the king."

Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld however refused to resign despite also being hit with a so-called censure motion by parliament.

Kaag&nbsp;said she would stay on as leader of the centre-left D66 party, which is in coalition talks with Prime Minister Mark Rutte after winning the second-most seats in elections in March.

Rutte said her resignation was a "great loss" to the cabinet.

Russia’s Emergencies Minister Yevgeny Zinichev died while trying to save a cameraman's life during a civil defence exercise in the Arctic city of Norilsk, the ministry said on Wednesday.

Zinichev, 55, had died in Norilsk while trying to save someone's life. A cameraman had fallen off a cliff during an interview, Margarita Simonyan, the head of Russian broadcaster RT, said.

“He and the cameraman were on the edge of a cliff. The cameraman slipped and fell into the water. Zinichev rushed after the fallen man and died after hitting a protruding rock,” she said.

The cameraman, who was later identified as 63-year-old film director Alexander Melnik, also died.

The two-day drills he was participating in across several Arctic cities including Norilsk, kicked off on Tuesday and involved over 6,000 people.

Zinichev had been the Emergencies Minister since 2018 and for years was reportedly a key member of President Vladimir Putin's security detail.

Zinichev was a member of the KGB security service in the last years of the USSR and his career took off after he served in Putin's security detail between 2006 and 2015.

He held a number of high-profile jobs, briefly serving as acting governor of Russia's exclave region of Kaliningrad and then as deputy head of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

He was appointed head of the emergencies ministry in May, 2018. He was also a member of Russia's Security Council.

As head of the emergencies ministry, he held one of the highest-profile cabinet jobs, dealing with natural and man-made disasters and other rapid-response situations across the vast country.
