Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it will not provide salary increases for its full-time employees this year.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella cited global macroeconomic uncertainties and a major push towards artificial intelligence (AI) to justify his move to freeze employee salaries. However, certain hourly or equivalent roles may receive salary increases, the company said.&nbsp;

"We are clear that we are helping drive a major platform shift in this new era of artificial intelligence, and doing so in a dynamic, competitive environment while also facing global macroeconomic uncertainties," media reports said quoting Nadella's internal email.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that Microsoft was an early adopter of AI technology, integrating Open AI's ChatGPT with its search engine Bing. According to media reports, Microsoft has invested nearly $13 billion in Open AI.&nbsp;

According to Nadella's email, the decision was carefully considered by senior leadership over several months, with a focus on ensuring the long-term success of the company.

Microsoft also announced that it will reduce the budget for annual bonuses and stock awards to 'historical averages'.

Nevertheless, the email emphasised that Microsoft will remain committed to prioritising and acknowledging exceptional performance by offering substantial rewards. To achieve this, managers will be entrusted with distinguishing and allocating compensation based on individual performance within their assigned budgets, the email read.&nbsp;

This latest announcement comes after Microsoft announced the termination of over 10,000 employees earlier this year. Additionally, LinkedIn, a group firm of Microsoft, recently cut around 716 jobs and announced the closure of its job app in China.

Meanwhile, the&nbsp;decision has disappointed some employees, who view it as a pay cut.

An India-based Microsoft employee, speaking on the condition of anonymity to BQPrime, expressed concerns about the impact on their annual appraisal cycle and the potential for further layoffs if market conditions do not improve.&nbsp;

Indian news website BQPrime cited a Microsoft India spokesperson as saying that compensation would be aligned with the overall market, even though there won't be a hike in salaries&nbsp;this year.&nbsp;

"While we will not be providing salary increases for our full-time salaried employees this year, we will continue to invest in our employees through promotions, bonus and stock," the spokesperson told BQPrime.&nbsp;

As for its China operations, the company said it will be phasing out its InCareeers app from the country by August 9. LinkedIn had decided to withdraw from mainland China in 2021 citing a 'challenging environment'.&nbsp;

"Despite our initial progress, InCareer faced fierce competition and a challenging macroeconomic climate, which ultimately led us to the decision of discontinuing the service," the company told users of the website.

Despite witnessing an increase in revenue each quarter last year, the Microsoft-owned platform is joining the likes of other tech giants in laying off employees.&nbsp;

Notably, in February earlier this year, after Microsoft announced plans to lay off around 10,000 employees, a significant amount of firing took place in the&nbsp;recruitment department of LinkedIn as well.&nbsp;

While the numbers were not confirmed at the time, several employees took to social media platforms to lament the sudden firing.&nbsp;

LinkedIn's ex-staff member Nicole Zawacki (who was employed as "diversity, inclusion and belonging sourcing lead") wrote that it will take a "little time" for her to process.

"Today I'm taking a little time to myself to process, but if anyone has any positions within Talent Acquisition or your Diversity team, or know of someone who does, I would sincerely appreciate any advice,” Zawacki posted.&nbsp;

The chief executives of Alphabet Inc’s Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and top White House officials to discuss key artificial intelligence (AI) issues on Thursday, said a White House official on Tuesday.

The invitation obtained by Reuters to the CEOs noted President Joe Biden’s “expectation that companies like yours must make sure their products are safe before making them available to the public.”&nbsp;

Concerns about fast-growing AI technology include privacy violations, bias and worries it could proliferate scams and misinformation.

In April, the Biden administration said it was seeking public comments on proposed accountability measures for AI systems, as concerns grow about its impact on national security and education.

The meeting will be attended by Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of the National Economic Council Lael Brainard and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo among others, said the White House official who did not wish to be named.

The meeting will emphasize the importance of driving innovation “with safeguards that mitigate risks and potential harms,” the official said.

The companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

ChatGPT, an AI program that recently grabbed the public’s attention for its ability to write answers quickly to a wide range of queries, in particular has attracted US&nbsp;lawmakers’ attention as it has grown to be the fastest-growing consumer application in history with more than 100 million monthly active users.

The yet-to-be peer-reviewed research, posted as a pre-print in arXiv also estimates a conversation comprising 20-50 questions with the AI chatbot in a single system may “drink” a “500ml bottle of water”.&nbsp;

“While a 500ml bottle of water might not seem too much, the total combined water footprint for inference is still extremely large, considering ChatGPT’s billions of users,” said the researchers.&nbsp;

The water consumed also refers to clean freshwater (to prevent corrosion and bacterial development) which the data centres use for generating electricity as well as for cooling servers to run AI models, which was studied using a framework created by the researchers.&nbsp;

The study claims that while training GPT-3 alone, Microsoft may have consumed a staggering 700,000 litres of water, which is the same amount used to make 370 BMW cars.

Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars, has also partnered with ChatGPT creator OpenAI. Meanwhile, scientists have also noted Google's Language Model for Dialogue Application (LaMDA) which is used by the giant’s AI chatbot Bard can also consume a “stunning” amount of water in the order of millions of litres.

Amazon has announced technology geared at its cloud users as well as a marketplace for AI tools from other companies. “Will people be able to ask questions to Google and engage with large language models (LLMs) in the context of search? Absolutely,” said Pichai, while speaking to the news outlet.

“The opportunity space, if anything, is bigger than before,” said Pichai, who also heads Google's parent company Alphabet Inc.

The Alphabet has been developing large language models (LLMs) which can process and respond to prompts in known language with human-like answers.

The company, however, has till now not been able to integrate the technology into its search which accounts for more than half of the revenue that the company generates.

Vague hints were dropped by Google in March about its plan to integrate AI technology into its search engines, however, no information was specified on its timeline. The announcement was made when Google launched “Bard”&nbsp;— its own version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Millions of dollars were pumped into AI powerhouse OpenAI by tech giant&nbsp;Microsoft a few weeks ago, after which ChatGPT was integrated into its Bing search engine. This development gave Microsoft's search engine an edge over Google search which is still following the conventional search approach.

As it continues to face heat from its rival Microsoft after the integration of ChatGPT in Bing, investors have also been pressurising Google to cut costs. Recently, Google announced that it would be laying off 12,000 employees, which comprises 6 per cent of its workforce.

Microsoft has agreed to pay approximately $3 million to settle its potential civil liability for more than 1,300 apparent sanctions violations involving exporting services or software from the US to Cuba, Iran, Syria, and Russia.

On Thursday, the United States and Microsoft reached a settlement over the tech firm's apparent violations of sanctions and export controls, which it voluntarily disclosed.

The US Treasury Department said Microsoft's conduct was "non-egregious and voluntarily self-disclosed."

Most of the violations, which occurred between 2012 and 2019, involved blocked Russian entities or persons in the Crimea region of Ukraine.

These occurred because of Microsoft's failure to identify and prevent the use of its products by prohibited parties, the Treasury Department said.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. As the company takes the bullet for the mishap, it has yet to deal with other complaints.

Sources told the news agency that Microsoft told at least two customers that the use of Bing search index to feed their AI chat tools violates the terms of their contract. They added that Microsoft may terminate licenses providing access to its search index.&nbsp;

The report also said that if they are cut off from the index, smaller search engines would have a hard time finding an alternative. At present, Microsoft and Google are the only two organisations that index the entire web. Google's limitations on the use of its index have led to nearly all other search engines using Microsoft's Bing.&nbsp;

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella stated that the step would "fundamentally change the way we work." The firm, however, accepted that sometimes Copilot can even make mistakes.

"We all want to focus on the 20 per cent of our work that really matters, but 80 per cent of our time is consumed with busy work that bogs us down. Copilot lightens the load," said the tech giant in a statement.

This latest chatbot from Microsoft, with its ChatGPT-like abilities, will make it easier to churn out calendar entries, meeting transcripts, or PowerPoint slides instantaneously in offices.

The idea behind incorporating a ChatGPT-style AI system is to make it work like an assistant for users of Microsoft's workplace software and take over their office tasks unilaterally.

"You could say we've been using AI on autopilot, and with this next generation of AI, we are moving from autopilot to copilot," said Nadella at a virtual release event.

Billions of dollars have been pumped into OpenAI by Microsoft, which has been building the technology that is being used to power ChatGPT as well as its latest version, GPT-4.

AI technology has already been used to create the chatbot on Microsoft's Bing search engine, which is getting more users.

Various tech giants have been cautiously approaching generative AI, fearing the embarrassment that comes when the technology performs incorrectly.

Microsoft said that the probe began after the company received a tip-off from Ukrainian officials. The investigation of cyber activity led to the discovery that the Russian hackers used a loophole, basically an exploitation of a previously unknown flaw in Microsoft's email software, between April and December 2022.&nbsp;

Microsoft says in a security advisory: "The attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted email which triggers automatically when it is retrieved and processed by the Outlook client. This could lead to exploitation BEFORE the email is viewed in the Preview Pane."&nbsp;

Media outlets reported that Microsoft apparently fixed an Outlook zero-day vulnerability which was exploited by a hacking group linked to Russia's military intelligence service GRU.&nbsp;

However, Microsoft still maintains an active Office of Responsible AI, which is tasked with creating rules and principles to govern the company’s AI initiatives. Microsoft states: "We are committed to making sure AI systems are developed responsibly and in ways that warrant people's trust".&nbsp;

As quoted by Platformer, the company said in a statement: "Microsoft is committed to developing AI products and experiences safely and responsibly, and does so by investing in people, processes, and partnerships that prioritise this."&nbsp;

The interaction was shared on 10 Downing Street's official YouTube channel which covered various trending topics like technology, the global economy, and the future.

Bill Gates, who also shared his experience in a Linkedin post, said that he and the UK PM “had a great conversation about the future”, adding, "Spoiler alert: it's bright".

The first question posed by the bot was about the impact of technology on the global economy and job market over the next 10 years.

Gates responded by saying that "we need to be more efficient because there is a labour shortage in healthcare and education. Hopefully, technology like AI can help us be more efficient."

In another question, the AI-powered bot asked them what advice would they give to their younger selves at the start of their careers if they could go back in time.

The Bing chatbot was designed by Microsoft and the start-up OpenAI- which launched ChatGPT in November last year that gained prominence for its detailed responses and articulate answers.&nbsp;

On Reddit, a forum devoted to the AI-enhanced version of Bing shared the experiences of users on Wednesday (February 15), where they said the chatbot, scolded, lied and was confused, news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Posts shared in the Reddit forum included screenshots of exchanges with Bing and told of stumbles such as insisting that the current year is 2022 and telling someone they have "not been a good user" for challenging its veracity. Others told of the Chatbot advising on hacking a Facebook account, plagiarising an essay and also telling a racist joke.&nbsp;

Speaking to AFP, a spokesperson from Microsoft said, "The new Bing tries to keep answers fun and factual, but given this is an early preview, it can sometimes show unexpected or inaccurate answers for different reasons, for example, the length or context of the conversation." The spokesperson added that as the company continues to learn from these interactions, it is adjusting its responses to create coherent, relevant and positive answers.&nbsp;

The above stumbles of Microsoft echoed the difficulties which were seen by Google's chatbot Bard last week, where it made a mistake in an advertisement. The AFP report said that the error led to &nbsp;Google's share price spiralling down by more than seven per cent on the announcement date.

The much loved 'IE' could not keep up with the competition however, and was soon overtaken by Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and more. Internet Explorer even came to symbolise all things slow, a far cry from times of its undisputed reign.

Microsoft is now killing off the browser completely. This is happening&nbsp;after 30 years of its initial release. Currently, desktop users can see Internet Explorer sitting nicely in the 'Start' menu. But now Microsoft is releasing an update that will redirect users to Edge, the new browser from Microsoft stables.

“The change to use Microsoft Edge update to disable IE [Internet Explorer] is intended to provide a better user experience and help organisations transition their last remaining IE11 users to Microsoft Edge,” the firm has said as quoted by The Guardian.

The IE icon will disappear from the 'Start' menu in June. And before that, users clicking on the icon will be redirected to Microsoft Edge.

It appears to be final nail in coffin for Internet Explorer which evokes nostalgia of chatrooms, messengers and much much more.

Asking 'ASL?' to someone would definitely raise eybrows now. But in pre-Tinder era, that's how things rolled. And Internet Explorer was a loyal wingman just standing by.
