US competition watchdog seeks to stop Microsoft-Activision mega gaming deal

<p>The Pentagon said on Wednesday (December 7) that it has awarded cloud computing contracts worth USD 9 billion to Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle. Previous such deal has been scrapped due to dispute between two of these firms.</p>

<p>The Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) is a "multiple-award contract vehicle that will provide the DoD the opportunity to acquire commercial cloud capabilities and services directly from the commercial Cloud Service Providers," the Pentagon said in a statement.</p>

<p>Defense Department spokesperson Commander Jessica McNulty told AFP that JWCC is "composed of four contracts with a shared ceiling of $9 billion."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pentagon had scrapped a USD 10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud computing contract, thus sidestepping bitter dispute between Amazon and Microsoft.</p>

<p>The Defense Department said the contract was canceled because it no longer met current needs, and that it would start a process for a new "multi-cloud/multi-vendor" computing contract.</p>

<p>Microsoft had won the previous contract in 2019. This had led to challenge from Amazon with allegations that company was shut out of the deal because of what it called Trump's vendetta against the company and its chief executive Jeff Bezos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amazon was considered front runner for JEDI considering Amazon Wed Services dominates cloud computing arena. The company already supplies classified servers for government agencies like the CIA.</p>

<p>Officials said at the time that instead of going forward with the deal in the face of litigation, the government would start over with the aim of getting the most up-to-date technology.</p>

<p>The probe will look into the effects of the takeover "to determine whether its initial competition concerns are confirmed", the commission said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"By acquiring Activision Blizzard, Microsoft may foreclose access to Activision Blizzard's console and PC video games, especially to high-profile and highly successful games (so-called 'AAA' games) such as 'Call of Duty'," it said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In September, media reports stated that Microsoft's deal to buy Activision Blizzard might face an investigation in Brussels and the United Kingdom. Activision Blizzard makes the blockbuster "Call of Duty" game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And concerns were raised after reports emerged that Microsoft's $75 billion acquisition of the video game maker is apparently anti-competitive and will exclude rivals from accessing the popular game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Chrome will be tentatively launching its latest update 'Chrome 110' in February next year. The web browser&nbsp;will be available for the two operating system users but they will not be receiving any security updates or extended support.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No security updates may put the users at a greater risk of hacking as online fraudsters often exploit the loopholes in older versions to make their scams work. Moreover, the problem may be compounded because Microsoft has also pulled the plug on the aforementioned OS' which will make them unstable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Phishing is an online scam, wherein malicious actors use sleazy emails, messages, advertisements or other resources to steal sensitive information. In every message there is a link in which some confidential information is asked from you.</p>

<p><strong>How does it work?</strong></p>

<p>To entice the users, the cyberthugs send a mail containing a replica URL of a big website or platform. That URL link is a proxy server between a potential victim and the targeted website so that the users are redirected to lookalike landing pages designed to capture credentials and MFA information.</p>

<p>"The phishing page has two different Transport Layer Security (TLS) sessions — one with the target and another with the actual website the target wants to access," Microsoft explained.</p>

<p>"These sessions mean that the phishing page practically functions as an AitM agent, intercepting the whole authentication process and extracting valuable data from the HTTP requests such as passwords and, more importantly, session cookies."</p>

<p>Once in possession of this information, the attackers injected the cookies into their own browsers to circumvent the authentication process, regardless of whether the victim had enabled MFA protections, it said.</p>

<p>"The session cookie is proof for the web server that the user has been authenticated and has an ongoing session on the website," Microsoft explained.</p>

<p>"In AitM phishing, an attacker attempts to obtain a target user's session cookie so they can skip the whole authentication process and act on the latter’s behalf."</p>

<p><strong>How to protect yourself from phishing?</strong></p>

<p>Speaking to DNA news website, a Delhi-based lawyer, Anurag, who monitors cases related to cybercrime, said that some important things should be taken care of to avoid phishing.</p>

<p>Do not click on any unverified link. If clicked, then do not fill the details. No company benefits you unnecessarily.&nbsp;No company gives the desired amount.&nbsp;Never fall for such calls, calls or emails, in which you are being offered with a bang.&nbsp;Do not share your banking details with anyone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of Microsoft's AI-powered facial analysis products, which purports to determine emotions based on videos and images of participants, is apparently being phased out of public access. Because there are no universal facial expressions, and even if there were, they would vary between groups, and because it is blatantly unscientific to "equate exterior displays of emotion with inside feelings," experts have long criticised such "emotion recognition" programmes.</p>

<p>Professor of psychology at Northeastern University, Lisa Feldman Barrett, told The Verge that while AI-powered emotion identification programmes may recognise frowns, "that's not the same as recognising fury." The topic of AI-based emotion recognition has been reviewed by Barrett.</p>

<p>The decision by Microsoft to discontinue this specific product is a part of a "bigger revision" of the organization's AI ethics guidelines.</p>

<p>In order to stress accountability and "find out who utilises its services and stronger human control into where these technologies are employed," the corporation has updated its Responsible AI Standards, which were first presented in 2019.</p>

<p><strong>What does this mean, then?</strong></p>

<p>Microsoft will first remove some parts of its facial recognition services from "Azure Face" and restrict access to others. Users will now need to apply to utilise Azure Face and provide specific information about their deployment plans to Microsoft. However, some use cases, such as the automated face blurring in pictures and videos, will continue to be available to everyone.</p>

<p>Microsoft is also retiring Azure Face’s ability to identify attributes like gender, smile, age, hair, facial hair, and makeup.</p>

<p>"Experts inside and outside the company have highlighted the lack of scientific consensus on the definition of ‘emotions,’ the challenges in how inferences generalise across use cases, regions, and demographics, and the heightened privacy concerns around this type of capability," wrote Microsoft’s chief responsible AI officer, Natasha Crampton, in a blog.</p>

<p>According to the corporation, existing users will lose access to these capabilities starting on June 30, 2023, while new customers will no longer be able to take advantage of them starting on June 21.</p>

<p>The twist is now here. Microsoft is ending "public" access to these tools, but they will still be used in "at least one of its own products," according to the company. For people who are blind, this product is an app called Seeing AI that "uses machine vision to describe the world."</p>

<p>End of an era as after 27 years of service, Microsoft plans to retire the oldest browser, Internet Explorer. It is a discontinued series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft, a report by Mashable stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, it was included in the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems and later was provided for free as part of the package. It was first released in 1995. As per a report by Mashable, Internet Explorer will be rendered inoperable from June 15.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the start, the browser was popular and it reached a peak of 95 per cent usage in 2003. However, the user base started to decline dramatically and it was unable to maintain its top position.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Faster internet speeds and better user interfaces offered by other competitors caused Internet Explorer's popularity to decline. It was unable to keep up with the competition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Mashable, Sean Lyndersay Microsoft Edge program manager stated that "the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies in Microsoft Edge."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company said: "We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode ("IE mode") built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge," as per the company release," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and more, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10," the company release said.</p>
