Since June, the death toll from floods in Pakistan has surpassed 1,000, with thousands more injured or displaced.

At least 1,033 people have died and 1,527 have been injured as a result of the rains and consequent floods. Almost 119 people have died and 71 have been injured in the last 24 hours.

The floods affected the lives of millions of people after which the Pakistan government declared a national emergency.

Despite the fact that the disaster affects everyone equally, women, the elderly, and the disabled suffer the most.

According to Karachi-based journalist Lubna Jerar Naqvi, the poor, the disabled, and women are especially vulnerable and disproportionately affected by natural disasters.

Naqvi cited UN Assistant Secretary-General Asako Okai, who recently stated that when disaster strikes, women and children are 14 times more likely to die than men.

According to Naqvi, the destruction of infrastructure will have a greater impact on women than on men because women spend more time at home, which means that with so many homes damaged, thousands of women and their children will be forced to live outside.

She added that being forced to remain in the open and share space with strangers could have an effect on a woman's mental state.

Pakistan has been in the midst of a humanitarian crisis since July. The country has been devastated by deadly floods, affecting 15% of its population.

According to the official tally, over 1,000 people have died and another 1,527 have been injured as a result of the rains and flooding since June 14.

These figures do not provide an accurate picture of how many women have been killed, injured, or displaced. Furthermore, women and girls are underrepresented in mainstream media and social media. This is when women account for roughly 48.5 percent of Pakistan's population.

Natural disasters such as droughts, floods, heat waves, extreme colds, and earthquakes are common in Pakistan. Pakistan ranks eighth among countries most affected by extreme weather events between 2000 and 2019, according to the Climate Risk Index 2021.

Pakistan: Women, disabled, and poor more vulnerable during natural disasters

'The Batman', 'Top Gun Maverick' and other Wion picks for the best Hollywood movies in 2022 so far

In an attempt to understand the ‘worry gap’ between the sexes ever since the Covid pandemic, a study has found that women are twice as likely to be worried when compared to men.

According to the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), UK’s independent social research institute, women are now worrying more about work-life balance, parents, and having children, while a minuscule 9 per cent of men said that they worry about the same.

The research, published in January, found out that the ‘worry gap’ between males and females wasn’t as stark before the pandemic, reports Sky News.

The largest divide in levels of worry was seen in the health and wellbeing matrix, whereby three times more women than men expressed serious concern about their lives.

The same level of difference was observed in other spheres, whereby 43 per cent of women said they were experiencing "intergenerational worries" about their children and parents compared to 1 per cent of the men.

While 31 per cent of women said they were extremely worried about their work-life balance, compared with 20 per cent of men.

“While overall levels of worry appear to be the same in 2022 as they were pre-pandemic, this conceals a stark 'worry gap' that has opened up between women and men," the study's co-author Josefien Breedvelt was quoted as saying.

"Women may still be experiencing a greater impact from the ongoing legacy and stress that the pandemic brought about.

"If ongoing challenges from the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis fall disproportionately on women, we may see an even greater divergence in levels of worry between men and women in Britain."

The study is part of NatCen's annual Society Watch report which seeks to examine the kind of impact COVID-19 pandemic had on social lives by extrapolating a representative sample of their worry levels. It then compared the answers to those collected in 2018 and 2019 to arrive at their conclusion.

Women worry twice as much as men about life, children, parents post Covid pandemic: Study

As part of Pride Week celebrations, dozens of men ran through central Madrid on Thursday while wearing high heels.

Men in high heels: Madrid's Pride race

It has been often argued and believed that women are more vulnerable than men. However, the latest suicide figures pertaining to the year 2020 of National Crime Records Bureau tells a different story. The suicide cases of males are more than double than that of females. As per the data, there were 1,53,052 suicide deaths in the year 2020 which means 419 suicide deaths per day. Male suicide deaths consisted of 1,08,532 (70.91%) while female suicide deaths consisted of 44,498 (29.07%), and the balance of 22 suicide deaths consisted of transgenders.

Such huge suicide cases of men may be attributed to gender stereotype. There is a generalized view about attributes that are ought to be possessed by males and females. Men are perceived to be agentic (aggressive, strong, determined, competitive, intelligent etc.). On the other hand, females are perceived to be communal (caring, sensitive, honest, understanding, sympathetic etc.). When a man deviates from his gender stereotype, he faces backlash. This is one of the pivotal reasons why most men do not discuss their problems or sufferings with others to let go of the frustration or find a possible solution to the problem/suffering and ultimately end their lives leading to a higher number of suicide deaths.

National Crime Records Bureau also presents shocking suicide deaths figures pertaining to professional/career problems. Males happen to be more vulnerable than females in the workplace as per the suicide death figures. The total suicide deaths due to professional/career problems for the year 2020 were 1837 which implies 5 suicide deaths per day. Male suicide deaths consisted of 1602 (87.20%) while female suicide deaths consisted of 234 (12.74%) and the balance one suicidal death case pertains to transgender. Although, National Crime Records does not categorically mention the exact nature of professional/career problems; however, the professional/career problems may be attributed to Bullying and harassment at workplace irrespective of gender; Poor career growth; Sexual harassment particularly among women employees; non-performance etc.

While stringent laws are available to deal with sexual harassment against women in the workplace; sadly, there is hardly any law to deal with bullying and harassment at the workplace. There is no legal definition of bully and harassment in the workplace. However, researchers define workplace bullying as “Offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an abuse or misuse of power through means that undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure the recipient”. Bullying and harassment may be done either by a senior member in an organization to its junior member or by colleagues.

Men are also victims of gender stereotypes - e.g. unemployment. In our society, it is expected that men should work and earn livelihoods to support their families and parents. Thus, when he is unable to find suitable employment, the ultimate path adopted is suicide. As per National Crime Records Bureau, the total unemployment suicide deaths were 3548, out of which 3237 (91.23%) were males; 309 (8.71%) were females and the balance 2 suicidal death cases pertain to transgender.

One may argue whether attempt to suicide is a criminal office in India since such attempts are done when an individual is severely stressed. Section 309 in the Indian Penal Code criminalizes attempt to suicide as crime which reads as “Whoever attempts to commit suicide and does any act towards the commission of such offence, shall he punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year 1[or with fine, or with both]”. However, section 115 of Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 gives relief to a stressed individual who attempts suicide. The section 115 reads “Notwithstanding anything contained in section 309 of the Indian Penal Code any person who attempts to commit suicide shall be presumed, unless proved otherwise, to have severe stress and shall not be tried and punished under the said Code”.

It raises a grave concern at the significantly higher number of suicide deaths in India for both men and women. It equally raises high concern over higher suicide deaths of men with 70.91%, making them more vulnerable in society. A mechanism needs to be put in place by the government for curbing suicide deaths by taking into consideration the various factors which forces an individual for suicide attempt.

Are men more vulnerable than women in India?

War is considered a men's game, but studies suggest that more female rulers have waged wars throughout history than male rulers. Here are examples of some of the women leaders whose influence and ambitions breached the borders.

Men or Women: Who gets into wars more?

A study has revealed that women are "significantly" more likely than men to suffer from long Covid. It has also been found that they would experience different symptoms. The study has underscored critical need for sex-disaggregated research.

Long Covid involves the persistence of complications for more than four weeks after initial infection.

Researchers from the Johnson &amp; Johnson Office of the Chief Medical Officer Health of Women Team, who carried out the analysis of data from around 1.3 million patients, observed females with long Covid are presenting with a variety of symptoms including ear, nose, and throat issues; mood disorders, neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological disorders; as well as fatigue.

Male patients, however, were more likely to experience endocrine disorders such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

The study found that there 22 per cent more chance of women developing long Covid than men. The research has been published in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion.

"Knowledge about fundamental sex differences underpinning the clinical manifestations, disease progression, and health outcomes of Covid-19 is crucial for the identification and rational design of effective therapies and public health interventions that are inclusive of and sensitive to the potential differential treatment needs of both sexes," the researchers explained.

"Differences in immune system function between females and males could be an important driver of sex differences in long Covid syndrome. Females mount more rapid and robust innate and adaptive immune responses, which can protect them from initial infection and severity. However, this same difference can render females more vulnerable to prolonged autoimmune-related diseases," they added.

For the study, the team reviewed 640,634 total articles amounting to 1,393,355 unique individuals.

Research suggests that about one in 500 men could be carrying an extra sex chromosome as previously thought, putting them at greater risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis and thrombosis.

The study further states that men who had an extra X or Y chromosome are less likely to be aware of their affliction.

In the study, published in Genetics in Medicine, the researchers analysed genetic data collected on over 200,000 UK men aged between 40 and 70 from UK Biobank, a biomedical database and research resource containing anonymised genetic, lifestyle and health information from half a million UK participants.

The researchers at the University of Exeter&nbsp;examined DNA from 207,067 men of European ancestry aged from 40 to 70 years old. They identified 231 men with an extra X chromosome and 143 men with an extra Y chromosome.&nbsp;

Sex chromosomes determine our biological sex. Men typically have one X and one Y chromosome. while women have two Xs. However, the study found out that some men also carry an extra X or Y chromosome —XXY or XYY—putting them at increased risk of health issues ranging from type 2 diabetes, blocked blood vessels and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—a lung condition.

Yajie Zhao, a PhD student at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, the study's first author, said in a statement, "Even though a significant number of men carry an extra sex chromosome, very few of them are likely to be aware of this. This extra chromosome means that they have substantially higher risks of a number of common metabolic, vascular, and respiratory diseases -- diseases that may be preventable”

Previous studies have found that around one in 1,000 females has an additional X chromosome, which can result in delayed language development and accelerated growth until puberty, as well as lower IQ levels compared to their peers.

"We'd need more research to assess whether there is additional value in wider screening for unusual chromosomes in the general population, but this could potentially lead to early interventions to help them avoid the related diseases,” Professor Ken Ong, also from the MRC Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge and joint senior author,&nbsp;said in a statement.

As per a House of Commons research, companies with more female leaders outperform those dominated by men. The research states that women should play a major role in the UK’s post-pandemic economic recovery.&nbsp;

The shadow secretary for women and equalities, Anneliese Dodds, said that the data showed that it is&nbsp;the women who hold the key to a stronger economy. She further accused the government of ignoring women’s needs during the pandemic.&nbsp;

Speaking to the Guardian, she said, “When you’ve got more engagement from women, when women are in the driving seat to the extent they should be, it makes for far more successful businesses."

The research comes just a few days before International Women’s Day.&nbsp;

As a part of the study, data was collected from the House of Commons library.&nbsp;

It cited McKinsey research which shows that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25 per cent more likely to have above-average performance. Also, the companies with more than 30 per cent female executives were more likely to outperform companies that do not have as many female executives.&nbsp;

The study further highlighted that women-led SMEs contribute about £85bn to economic output. However, Beis research shows that just 16 per cent of small business employers and one in three of entrepreneurs are women.&nbsp;

There is also evidence stating that fewer women get access to financing and business loans. Only 15 per cent of bank financing applications and 22 per cent of new primary business bank account openings are coming from women.

Last week, the authorities arrested 37-year-old Ryan Matthew Conlon of Halethorpe, Maryland and 37-year-old Scott Ryan Merryman of Independence, Kansas. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The case of Conlon was sealed until Monday. He has also been charged with making threats to blow up headquarters of National Security Agency. &nbsp;

Merryman was arrested by the authorities when he travelled from his home to Maryland. He had called the police in his hometown on last Tuesday to say that he was on his way to Washington, DC, to see the president, the federal authorities said. &nbsp;

According to an FBI agent's affidavit, when a secret service agent called him on last Wednesday, Merryman said God had told him to travel to Washington to "lop off the head of the serpent in the heart of the nation." &nbsp;

"Merryman denied that the serpent was the President of the United States, but stated that he had information about the Book of Revelation that he was being instructed by God to give to the President," the agent wrote. &nbsp;

Court filings did not list attorneys for Merryman or Conlon, who was released after his initial appearance in court last week. If a study in the UK is to be believed, meaty diets of men are responsible for 40% more greenhouse gas emissions than those of women. &nbsp;

A quarter of diet-related carbon emissions were due to the “optional” food and drink like alcohol, coffee, cakes and sweets, found the research. &nbsp;

The policies looking to encourage sustainable diets should focus on plant-based foods. The switching of drinks and cutting down on sweet snacks also help, the scientists said. &nbsp;

In western countries, another study found that vegan and vegetarian diets were around one third cheaper to buy than the regular diets. &nbsp;

Published in the journal ‘Plos One’, the new study analysed the emissions linked to over 3,200 specific food items and examined the diets of around 212 British people. The food and drink intake of these people were recorded for three 24-hour periods. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The study found that animal products were responsible for almost half of the average diet’s greenhouse gas emissions. Around 31% was from meat and 14% from dairy. &nbsp;

The non-vegetarian diets lead to 59% more greenhouse gas emissions than vegetarian diets. The diets of men had 41% more emissions as they eat more meat and drinks, the research showed. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A new research warned the gender gap in mortality rates for teenagers or young adults seems to be widening in many countries.&nbsp;As per the study, boys and men are more likely to die young than women. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Boys and young men from the age of 10 to 24 accounted for around two-thirds (61%) of all global deaths in 2019.

The mortality rates in males in this age group have decreased by 15.3% since 1950. It lags behind improvements in mortality rates in females, which decreased by 30% in the same age group in the corresponding time period. &nbsp;

The greatest differences in mortality rates were identified in Latin America and the Caribbean. The mortality rate in men from the age of 20 to 24 was more than three times for women. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The cause of death for men aged 15 to 24 in this region was interpersonal violence and conflict. In 20 years, there has been little or no improvement in mortality for this age group, said the study. &nbsp;

If one goes by a new study, middle-aged and older women are around 10 times more likely to get diagnosed with broken heart syndrome than younger women or men of any age. &nbsp;

The rare condition has become common and has been rising steadily well before Covid pandemic, said the research. &nbsp;

According to the study published in the American Heart Association’s journal, the painful feeling now comes with a severe diagnosis. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Two Hindu men have been killed in fresh religious violence in Bangladesh, police officials said Saturday, taking the death toll to six from recent unrest in the Muslim-majority country.

Protests began on Wednesday after footage emerged of a Koran being placed on the knee of a Hindu god during celebrations for the Hindu festival Durga Puja. The minority community make up about 10 per cent of the population.

Police said the latest violence occurred in the southern town of Begumganj when hundreds of Muslims formed a street procession after Friday prayers on the final day of Durga Puja.

More than 200 protesters attacked a temple where members of the Hindu community were preparing to perform the last rites of the 10-day festival, local police station chief Shah Imran told reporters.

The attackers beat and stabbed to death an executive member of the temple committee, he said.

On Saturday morning, another Hindu man's body was found near a pond next to the temple, district police chief Shahidul Islam told AFP.

"Two men have died since yesterday's attack. We are working to find the culprits," he added.

Anti-Hindu violence spread to more than a dozen districts across Bangladesh this week after footage emerged on social media of the Koran incident.

At least four people were killed late Wednesday when police opened fire on a crowd of around 500 people attacking a Hindu temple in Hajiganj, one of several towns hit by the disturbances.

At least 150 Hindus were injured across the country, community leader Gobinda Chandra Pramanik told AFP, and at least 80 makeshift temples had been attacked. Authorities did not confirm the figures.

Hindus have often fallen victim to communal violence in the country of 169 million.

Local authorities said they have deployed extra security including paramilitary border guards to control any further unrest.

It is not easy to find the rights words to describe something or someone and that tough task has led Lancet into a pool of trouble.<o:p></o:p>

Lancet is a leading medical journal which has faced fury for describing women as 'bodies with vaginas'.<o:p></o:p>

An article titled 'Periods on Display' was published on September 01. In this article the experts tried to examine an exhibition exploring the taboos related to menstrual cycle. It also touched upon the history of periods exhibited at the Vagina Museum in London.

<o:p>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/technology/amazon-launches-dog-like-robot-that-can-monitor-your-home-416781">Amazon launches dog-like robot that can monitor your home</a></o:p>

However, the article gained spotlight due to its poor choice of words, rather than the text. The article was featured on the front page on the journal and in that the term 'women' was replaced with 'bodies with vaginas'.<o:p></o:p>

"Historically, the anatomy and physiology of bodies with vaginas have been neglected," the journal's front page read.<o:p></o:p>

This has brought immense criticism for the journal as many experts have labelled this to be 'insulting and abusive' and others have called it a ‘misguided pursuit of woke points’.<o:p></o:p>

Some people even cracked down on Lancet by calling it a hypocrite institution. Readers took the liberty to point out that an article on prostate cancer, published on September 20, did not label men as 'bodies with penises', contrary to this article.<o:p></o:p>

"This framing makes it sound like a coincidence that "bodies with vaginas"&nbsp;have been neglected by medicine, as if it were not the product of a discrimination and oppression specific to the female sex. Medical misogyny is exists - and refusing to acknowledge women perpetuates it,"&nbsp;Feminist writer Claire Heuchan, who blogs under the name Sister Outrider,&nbsp;said on Twitter.

It is not easy to find the rights words to describe something or someone and that tough task has led Lancet into a pool of trouble. Lancet is a leading medical journal which has faced fury for describing women as 'bodies with vaginas'. An article titled 'Periods on Display' was published on September 01. In this article the experts tried to examine an exhibition exploring the taboos related to menstrual cycle. It also touched upon the history of periods exhibited at the Vagina Museum in London. The article was featured on the front page on the journal and in that the term 'women' was replaced with 'bodies with vaginas'. "Historically, the anatomy and physiology of bodies with vaginas have been neglected," the journal's front page read. This has brought immense criticism for the journal as many experts have labelled this to be 'insulting and abusive' and others have called it a ‘misguided pursuit of woke points’. Some people even cracked down on Lancet by calling it a hypocrite institution. Readers took the liberty to point out that an article on prostate cancer, published on September 20, did not label men as 'bodies with penises', contrary to this article. "This framing makes it sound like a coincidence that "bodies with vaginas" have been neglected by medicine, as if it were not the product of a discrimination and oppression specific to the female sex. Medical misogyny is exists - and refusing to acknowledge women perpetuates it," Feminist writer Claire Heuchan, who blogs under the name Sister Outrider, said on Twitter. "I apologise to our readers who were offended by the cover quote and the use of those same words in the review. At the same time, I want to emphasise that transgender health is an important dimension of modern health care, but one that remains neglected," said Richard Horton, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet. Despite spending similar amounts, men's purchases cause 16 per cent more climate-warming emissions than women's, a study has revealed.

The research published in Journal for Industrial Ecology finds that spending on petrol and diesel for cars was the greatest difference between men and women.

According to researchers, gender differences in emissions have been remarkably understudied and should be acknowledged when action is taken against climate change.

The study compared the emissions produced by single men and women in Sweden, and found that food and holidays were responsible for more than half of all emissions. It was discovered that men and women, both, accounted for roughly one-third of their annual emissions during the holiday season.

According to the research findings, people's emissions can be reduced by 40 per cent if they chop meat and dairy from their diet and switch to train travel instead of flying or driving.

Researchers at Ecoloop in Sweden, who conducted the study, believe it's vital to take men's and women's differences into account in policymaking.

Annika Carlsson Kanyama, of Ecoloop, says that spending habits, in general, are very stereotypical as women spend more on home decorations, health and fashion, and men spend more on fuel for cars, eating out, alcohol and tobacco.

Due to insufficient data for individuals living in families, the research made use of data for individuals living alone.

The study suggests a change in dietary habits and holidaying ways to reduce the number of annual emissions produced by individuals, as these changes do not require any extra spending such as buying an electric car.

Two men who were charged with sending a grossly offensive message and accused of inciting "racial hatred" with a social media video targeting UK Home Secretary Priti Patel admitted to the charge in court on Tuesday.

Jake Henderson, 28, posted a video using a racially abusive word to describe Patel after a Covid-19 pandemic in January this year and co-accused Robert Cumming, 26, who was among those who widely shared it online.

Both men admitted sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication network and will next appear at Mansfield

Magistrates' Court in Nottinghamshire, East Midlands region of England, on August 12 for sentencing. The duo remains on bail until the sentencing hearing.

The 50-second video was played in court, where Henderson can be heard saying: "As a white man, I won't be listening to people of colour."

Cumming then shared it along with the caption: "Haters gonna be hating" and four laughing emojis.

Prosecutor Daniel Church, appearing on behalf of the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said the video was "motivated by hostility towards members of racial groups".

The court heard how members of the public were distressed by the comments linked with the video and feared its contents could incite racial hatred.

The duo was summonsed to court on May 29 and charged with sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication network, which comes with a custodial sentence or fine or both.

"Following complaints in relation to a video targeted at Home Secretary Priti Patel and posted on social media in January 2021, the CPS has authorised Nottinghamshire Police to charge Jake Henderson and Robert Cumming with sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication network,” Janine Smith, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, said earlier this month.

"The function of the CPS is not to decide whether a person is guilty of a criminal offence, but to make fair, independent and objective assessments about whether it is appropriate to present charges to a court to consider,” Smith said.

Police in Denmark said they on Tuesday have arrested six men, who are suspected of joining and financing the Islamic State group in Syria.&nbsp;

Two of those arrested, ages 29 and 30, allegedly travelled to Syria in 2014 where they were recruited by IS. They are suspected of violating Danish terror laws and, if found guilty, they face up to six years in jail. The 29-year-old man tried to reenter Syria in 2015, police said in a statement.&nbsp;

Five of them are also suspected of sending money to financially support the group. One of them, the 29-year-old, allegedly transferred funds from 2013 to 2017.&nbsp;

Police said in a statement that they believed that the 29-year-old man used the four others as middlemen for the money transfers. If found guilty of financing a terror group, they face up to 10 years in prison.&nbsp;

None of the men were identified in line with Danish practice. &nbsp;

Women who face heavy psychological pressures at work are more likely to gain weight, a study claims.

The study, published in the journal International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, included data from over 3,872 participants in Sweden.

"We were able to see that high job demands played a part in women's weight gain, while for men there was no association between high demands and weight gain," said Sofia Klingberg, a researcher at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The participants in the study were investigated on three occasions over a 20-year period with respect to such variables as body weight and demands and control at work.

They were followed either from age 30 to 50 or from 40 to 60.

To estimate the level of job demands, the respondents were asked about their work pace, psychological pressures, whether there was enough time for their duties and how often the demands made were contradictory.

The questions about control at work covered such matters as how often they learned something new; whether the job called for imagination or advanced skills; and whether the respondent was personally able to choose what to do and how to do it.

The results show that the respondents with a low degree of control in their work more frequently gained considerable weight, defined as a weight gain of 10 per cent or more, in the course of the study. This applied to women and men alike.

On the other hand, long-term exposure to high job demands played a part only for women. In just over half of the women who had been subjected to high demands, a major increase in weight took place over the 20 years.

This gain in weight was some 20 per cent higher than in women subject to low job demands.

"When it came to the level of demands at work, only the women were affected," Klingberg said.

"We haven't investigated the underlying causes, but it may conceivably be about a combination of job demands and the greater responsibility for the home that women often assume. This may make it difficult to find time to exercise and live a healthy life," Klingberg said.

Having had or not had an academic education does not explain the associations in the study. Neither does the quality of diet or other lifestyle factors. However, the information about dietary intake comes from the respondents themselves, with a certain risk of incorrect reporting.

At the same time, given the problems associated with work-related stress, the study is relevant in terms of public health.

The researchers think identification of groups who are susceptible to stress and efforts to reduce work-related stress would likely achieve a decrease not only in weight gain but also in the incidence of ill health, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.&nbsp;

High-stress jobs make women put on weight, not men: Study

An NGO’s plea in the Delhi High Court seeking to make marital rape an offence was on Tuesday opposed by another NGO, run by a group of men, which said that married women have been given adequate protection under the law against sexual violence by their husbands. NGO Men Welfare Trust claimed that exception in Section 375 of the IPC, which says intercourse or a sexual act by a man with his wife is not rape, is “not unconstitutional” and setting it aside will create more injustice.

It was opposing the petitions filed by NGO RIT Foundation and the All India Democratic Women’s Association, which have challenged the constitutionality of Section 375 (which defines rape) of the IPC on the ground that it discriminated against married women being sexually assaulted by their husbands. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar posed various questions to the trust’s representatives, who were made intervenors in the matter, and asked whether their stand was that a husband has a right to perpetrate sexual offence on his wife and could he force sex on his spouse?

To this, NGO Men Welfare Trust’s representatives Amit Lakhani and Ritwik Bisaria replied in the negative and said there were existing provisions, including domestic violence law, harassment to a married woman, unnatural sex, which provide adequate protection to a wife against sexual violence committed by the husband. However, no such protection is given to husbands as laws in India are gender-specific, unlike in most parts of the world, they argued.

When NGO Men Welfare Trust said that rape by a husband and a third person cannot be put on the same pedestal, the bench shot back, saying “a rape is a rape. Is it that if you are married, it is okay but if you are not, then it’s a rape? If an uncle or grandfather sexually assaults a woman or a girl, it is covered under the offence of rape.” The arguments remained inconclusive and will continue on April 16, the next date of hearing.

Earlier, Kolkata-based NGO Hridaya had also opposed the plea to make marital rape an offence, saying consent for physical relations is for all time when a person enters the institution of marriage. The high court had earlier agreed to examine the issue raised in PILs by advocate Karuna Nundy, who represented RIT Foundation and the All India Democratic Women’s Association, and a man and a woman, who have sought striking down the exception in the Indian penal law that does not consider sexual intercourse with a wife, not less than 15 years of age, as rape.

The petitions have also sought setting aside of the exception in the rape law that protects husbands, saying that it violates the right to equality, freedom and to live life with dignity provided under the Constitution. The Delhi government had said that quashing the protection husbands enjoy against prosecution for marital rape would lead to “creation of an offence”, which is a legislative job and courts cannot create or legislate an offence, which would be the inevitable outcome of striking down of the exception in the IPC.

The Centre has opposed the main petitions saying marital rape cannot be made a criminal offence as it could become a phenomenon which may destabilise the institution of marriage and an easy tool for harassing the husbands.

Dame Helen Mirren says men used to &quot;expose&quot; themselves to her once a week in her 20s.

The &quot;Queen&quot; star insists she has never experienced sexual harassment in Hollywood but was subjected to it regularly in her younger years.

Speaking in a preview clip of her Today interview with Willie Geist, which airs in full on January 21, she said: &quot;I had never experienced that ... in Hollywood. Because I came to Hollywood, I was in my 30s. I was too old. It doesn&#39;t happen to you unless you&#39;re very young.

&quot;When I was in between 16 and 23, 24 - men would expose themselves to me often, I would say about once a week ... on the subway, on the tube, on the bus, walking down a road and it was like, &#39;Ugh.&#39;&quot;

Helen previously revealed she &quot;wishes she had told people to f**k off more&quot; when she was younger.

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, the 72-year-old actress shared: &quot;It&#39;d be to say &#39;F**k off&#39; more and stop being so bloody polite... In those days, you had to. It&#39;s hard to explain how difficult it is to overcome the culture. You become a voice in the wilderness. No one wants to listen.&quot;

And Helen Mirren believes things have &quot;changed substantially&quot; for women in the film and television industry in the last decade.

She said: &quot;Hugely. In the last 10 years - or really the last three or four years - things have changed substantially. There is a pressure mounting behind a dam, and I hope that that dam is finally bursting in terms of women directors and women-led dramas. When I first did &#39;Prime Suspect&#39; they were not at all sure that a female-led drama would be acceptable to the public. So that&#39;s how much things have changed since we first began &#39;Prime Suspect&#39;. It&#39;s changed hugely.&quot;

Britain&#39;s world number three Andy&nbsp;Murray&nbsp;has stressed the importance of gender equality in tennis, saying the&nbsp;work&nbsp;ethic required to succeed is the same for both men and women.

Murray, who is seen as the voice of&nbsp;women&#39;s equality within the game for his previous views on various issues, was coached by French woman Amelie Mauresmo for two years from 2014.

The Scot, who won seven titles and reached two Australian Open finals with Mauresmo, said he had a better understanding of the struggles&nbsp;women&nbsp;face in the game because of the partnership.

&quot;People often underestimate the amount of&nbsp;work&nbsp;that it takes to become a top tennis player,&quot; Murray&nbsp;said in comments published by BBC Magazine. &quot;And that&nbsp;work&nbsp;ethic is the same whether you are a man or a woman.

&quot;There are hours spent in the gym, on court, in physio, travelling, analysing matches and opponents, talking with your team, managing your body, and of course, making plenty of sacrifices,&quot; added the three-time grand slam champion.

&quot;Anyone who has spent any time with any of the top&nbsp;women&nbsp;will know they make those same sacrifices and are as determined and committed to winning as any of the top men on the tour.&quot;

Murray&nbsp;said he&nbsp;worked with Mauresmo because she was the right person to coach him and not because of her gender but discovered she wasn&#39;t treated the same as men in similar jobs.

&quot;Since then, I have been asked about&nbsp;women&#39;s equality and I would find it&nbsp;hard&nbsp;to look any of the top female tennis players in the eye if I did not speak my mind,&quot; he said.

Germany is moving to close the pay gap between men and women with a proposed new law agreed in principle by the government&#39;s ruling coalition parties Thursday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel&#39;s conservative CDU reached the agreement in talks with its centre-left coalition allies the SPD, without saying when the changes would take effect.

Under the deal, companies with more than 200 employees will have to be transparent about what they pay men and women in equal positions and publish wage data in anonymous form.

Companies with more than 500 staff will have to introduce mechanisms to equalise pay for both sexes, said SPD parliamentary chief Thomas Oppermann.

He hailed the proposed law as &quot;a great step forward&quot; for millions of female employees.

Women in Germany earn around one fifth less than men, according to official data released in May.

In raw or unadjusted terms, the gender pay gap stood at 21 percent in Germany last year, above the European average of 16.5 percent, the federal statistics office Destatis calculated.

In the former communist east of the country, the pay gap was much narrower, standing at eight percent last year, but in the west it stood at 23 percent, Destatis calculated.&nbsp;

Women in Germany tend more often to work in low-paid jobs or sectors and frequently only part time, the statisticians said.

The adjusted pay gap, which compares wages for people with the same qualifications doing the same work, stood at seven per cent.

Germany takes step to close pay gap between men, women

Singapore called for heightened vigilance on Saturday, a day after Indonesian police arrested a group of men they believed were plotting a rocket attack on the wealthy city-state with the help of a Syrian-based Islamic State militant.

The six suspected militants were rounded up on Friday in dawn raids on Batam island, which is about 15 kilometres (10 miles) south of Singapore, and local police chief Sam Budigusdian said they were still being held there while investigations continued.

Singapore&#39;s home affairs minister, K Shanmugam, said the men had plans to hit Marina Bay, the state&#39;s glittering downtown waterfront, where night-time Formula One Grand Prix Races are held alongside a giant Ferris wheel and a swanky casino resort.

&quot;This shows how our enemies are thinking of different ways of attacking us,&quot; Shanmugam said in a Facebook posting.

&quot;Terrorists...will seek to come in through our checkpoints; they will also try to launch attacks from just outside. And this is in addition to lone wolf attacks from radicalised individuals/groups. We have to be extra vigilant.&quot;

Batam is linked to Singapore by frequent ferries and its beach resorts and golf courses are a popular weekend getaway destination for Singaporeans, who are preparing to celebrate their National Day holiday on Tuesday.

Singapore: target for Islamic State

Multi-ethnic Singapore, a major commercial, banking and travel hub that is home to many Western expatriates, has never seen a successful attack by Islamist militants.&nbsp;However, authorities did break up a plot to bomb several embassies soon after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and a Singaporean militant was accused of plotting to crash a hijacked plane into the city&#39;s airport in 2002.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said this week Singapore was a target for Islamic State because it is &quot;a rational, open, cosmopolitan country&quot;, even though it is not involved in the US-led campaign against the group in the Middle East.

The six arrested on Batam, mostly factory workers, according to local media, were suspected of having links to Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian now fighting with Islamic State in Syria.

&quot;There&#39;s a link to Bahrun Naim because there was communication with Bahrun Naim, but whether they were affiliated with Bahrun Naim&#39;s group or not, this is what we&#39;re investigating now,&quot; police spokesman Agus Rianto said.&nbsp;Indonesian investigators believe that Naim was one of the masterminds behind an attack in January in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in which eight people were killed, including the four attackers.

In a blog post after the coordinated shootings and suicide bombings across Paris last November, Naim urged his Indonesian audience to study the planning, targeting, timing and courage of the jihadis who killed 130 people in the French capital.

Turning Point

Asked on Friday if physical evidence of preparations for a rocket attack had been discovered, Rianto said &quot;not yet&quot;.&nbsp;Some security analysts were doubtful that a rocket attack on Singapore from Batam was feasible, but Tim Ripley of Jane&#39;s Defence Weekly said it was possible.

&quot;They would be the long-range variants of the Grad rocket, originally from Russia but copied in China, Iran, Pakistan and several other countries,&quot; Ripley said. &quot;Very simple to use but very inaccurate at the ranges for this attack. The damage would depend on where they hit but the potential for casualties would be high.&quot;

If the plan for a rocket launch on Singapore is confirmed, it would suggest that militants in Southeast Asia are preparing far more sophisticated attacks than those of recent months.&nbsp;Indonesia, home to the world&#39;s largest Muslim population, has itself seen attacks by Islamist militants before. The bombing of two nightclubs on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people was among a spate of attacks during the 2000s.

Police were largely successful in destroying domestic militant cells after that, but they now worry the influence of Islamic State will bring a resurgence of jihadi violence.&nbsp;Authorities in Indonesia and neighbouring Malaysia say dozens of men have gone from those countries to join Islamic State&#39;s fight in the Middle East.

Security officials fear that Naim and other Islamic State leaders are now asking supporters in Southeast Asia to launch attacks at home.&nbsp;However, Jakarta-based security analyst Sidney Jones said it would be a departure for Naim and his supporters if they were thinking of attacking targets outside Indonesia.

&quot;One thing I think is clear is Bahrun Naim has been able to establish a lot of communication with a lot of people through his social media network,&quot; Jones said.

Rocket attack planned on downtown waterfront, where night-time Formula One races are held next to a Ferris wheel and swanky casino: Minister
