Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Anna Malyar confirmed that the evacuation mission was successful with 53 wounded personnel being taken to hospital in Novoazovsk for treatment and the remaining 211 moving to Olenivka through a humanitarian corridor agreed by both nations. &nbsp;

However, reports suggest that the steel plant housed around 600 Ukrainian soldiers and Malyar said that efforts are underway to rescue all of the soldiers at the Azovstal facility.

“Thanks to the defenders of Mariupol, Ukraine gained critically important time. And they fulfilled all their tasks. But it is impossible to unblock Azovstal by military means,” Malyar said according to AFP.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also thanked the soldiers for their service and provided an update on their health. “We hope that we will be able to save the lives of our guys. There are severely wounded ones among them. They’re receiving care. Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes alive.”

According to local media reports, the troops managed to survive in the Mariupol steel plant amidst heavy shelling and attack from the Russian military. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces also lauded the bravery shown by the soldiers as they took to social media to praise them.

“The supreme military command ordered the commanders of the units stationed at Azovstal to save the lives of the personnel,” the General Staff said in a statement on its Facebook account. “Efforts to rescue defenders who remain on the territory of Azovstal continue.”

Russian forces have battered Mariupol for almost two months. The last pocket of Ukrainian resistance is Azovstal factory. It is a huge Soviet-era plant that was built during Josef Stalin's time. The factory has labyrinth of bunkers and tunnels underneath to withstand external attack.

Civillians along with Ukrainian soldiers have been holed up inside the steel plant. Most civillians have been evacuated from the plant after a deal brokered by the UN and International Committee of the Red Cross.

But Ukrainian fighters remain at the plant. Videos and pictures posted online have shown some with serious injuries.

Relatives appealed on Monday to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul to help extract the defenders.

Igor Pedin was among the people fleeing the besieged city, but his plight took him on a 225km journey to the city of Zaporizhzhia.

Pedin, who is 61 years old, decided to escape the city with nothing more than a small bag of supplies and his nine-year-old mongrel terrier Zhu-Zhu. The long journey took him through Russian-occupied territories, and it was a miracle, according to him, that he made it to Zaporizhzhia safely.

According to the report of The Guardian, Pedin, a former ship’s cook, decided to leave Mariupol on April 20 when Russian military had already invaded his part of the city and were ‘shooting at will’.

He packed all his belongings carefully and the next morning, he decided to travel to the outskirts of the city where he was handed food and water by the Russian soldiers positioned at the barricades before he started walking on Zaporizhzhia Road.

“I looked like a vagabond to them, I was nothing. I was dirty and covered from dust, as my house had been filled with a fog of smoke. I walked out of the city by this motorway and at the top I turned around. I looked back down at the city and I said to myself, it was the right decision. I said goodbye. There was an explosion. I turned and walked on,” Pedin told The Guardian in an exclusive interview.

It took him a long time and a lot of hardship but he was finally able to reach the central part of Zaporizhzhia where he was given a pass by the Donetsk People’s Republic militia.

"The lives of the people who remain there are in danger. Everyone is important to us. We ask for your help in saving them," Zelenskiy said.

Over 300 civilians were evacuated from Mariupol and other areas in southern Ukraine as part of a joint U.N.-Red Cross operation that concluded on Wednesday, U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine Osnat Lubrani said.

"While this second evacuation of civilians from areas in Mariupol and beyond is significant, much more must be done to make sure all civilians caught up in fighting can leave, in the direction they wish," Lubrani said.

A heartbreaking video from Mariupol is making the rounds on the internet. Shot in the besieged Azovstal steel factory in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol this video shows women and children asking to see the sun and return home to their families, saying that they are “running out of strength”.

As per a Guardian report, one woman in the video says in Russian that there are 15 youngsters, ranging from young children to teenagers living in the tunnels under the plant.

"(I hope) we can leave here and see the sun, because we've been sat here for two months already. I want to see the sun because in here it's dim, not like outside. When our houses are rebuilt we can live in peace. Let Ukraine win because Ukraine is our native home," says one unidentified young boy in the video.

Among those hiding, a woman reports that she has been holed up under the factory since 27th February, i.e., more than 50 days.

Mariupol, Ukraine, was "successfully liberated," according to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, April 21.

Russia grabbed control of the port city of Mariupol last week but the remaining resistance took refuge in the Azovstal region. As a result, Russian president Vladimir Putin had earlier ordered a complete blockage of the region in order to contain the movement of the Ukrainian troops.

However, Ukraine has refuted the claim as they said that no agreement has been reached between the two countries when it comes to the humanitarian corridor in the port city of Mariupol

As Russian bombardments devastated their hometown of Mariupol, Yevgen and Tetiana decided they had only one way to&nbsp;escape&nbsp;with their four&nbsp;children:&nbsp;on&nbsp;foot.

Talking Friday to AFP in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia as they waited for a train westwards, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;recounted through tears and laughter their miraculous 125-kilometre (80-mile) trek to safety.

For weeks as the bombing laid waste to Mariupol, the parents tried to prepare their&nbsp;children&nbsp;Yulia, 6, Oleksandr, 8, Anna, 10, and Ivan, 12, for the perilous journey they faced.

"We explained to them for two months, while we were in the cellar, where we would go... We prepared them for this long journey," said Tetiana Komisarova, 40.&nbsp;

"They&nbsp;saw&nbsp;it as an&nbsp;adventure."

Last Sunday, together with her husband Yevgen Tishchenko, a 37-year-old technician, they finally thought the time had come to make their move.&nbsp;

Nervously, they led the&nbsp;children&nbsp;out of their building. It was the first time they had all left together since the Russian invasion began&nbsp;on&nbsp;February 24.&nbsp;

Around them they found a terrifying scene of utter destruction.&nbsp;

"When the kids&nbsp;saw, they walked in silence," Yevgen said.

"I don't know what was going&nbsp;on&nbsp;in their heads. Maybe they too couldn't believe that our city no longer existed."

Life underground&nbsp;

The adults already had a sense of what awaited them. They had snuck out of the house to take food and water from bombed out shops and been confronted by the corpses littering the streets.&nbsp;

"It seemed less frightening to die in a bombing raid than of hunger," said Tetiana.&nbsp;

A shell had hit the roof of their apartment block and for the&nbsp;children, life had been lived entirely underground.&nbsp;

"We brought them books in the basement. The light was so dim that I could hardly see, but they managed to read," Tetiana said.&nbsp;

Mischievous 10-year-old Anna described moments of lightness playing with friends from a neighbouring flat.

"Sleeping&nbsp;on&nbsp;the concrete was not great," recalled the ponytailed girl. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She insisted bravely that when the bombs fell "we weren't so scared".

"The building was shaking a lot and there was a lot of dust," she said. "It was not pleasant to breathe."

Leaving Mariupol&nbsp;

Finally leaving the basement and the city was "hard", said Anna.&nbsp;

"We had to carry our bags and they were heavy," she told AFP.&nbsp;

That was&nbsp;on&nbsp;the first day, at least, before her dad discovered what the&nbsp;family&nbsp;christened "the golden cart."&nbsp;

In reality, it was a rusted and creaking three-wheeled trolley -- but it made the walk much easier.&nbsp;

"My wife pushed our youngest girl&nbsp;on&nbsp;her tricycle. And I pushed the cart, often with one of the&nbsp;children&nbsp;perched&nbsp;on&nbsp;the bags," Yevgen said. "The other two walked beside me."

In five days and four nights of travel, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;passed through numerous Russian checkpoints, telling the soldiers that they were heading to their relatives.

"They didn't treat us as enemies, they tried to help," Yevgen said.&nbsp;

"But every time they asked us: 'Where are you from? From Mariupol? But why are you going in this direction, why aren't you going to Russia?'"

At night, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;slept in the homes of local people who opened their doors along the route and were well fed.

During the day, they moved&nbsp;on, against all odds.&nbsp;

Eventually they got lucky and came across Dmytro Zhirnikov, who was driving through Polohy, a Russian-occupied town located about 100 kilometres from Zaporizhzhia.

"I&nbsp;saw&nbsp;this&nbsp;family&nbsp;pushing a cart&nbsp;on&nbsp;the side of the road," said Zhirnikov, who regularly travels Zaporizhzhia to sell the vegetables his&nbsp;family&nbsp;produces.&nbsp;

"I stopped and told them to put their things in my trailer."

After 125 kilometres&nbsp;on&nbsp;foot, Tetiana, Yevgen, and their little ones finished their journey in his battered van.&nbsp;

Zhirnikov remembered the elation they felt when they emerged from Russian-controlled territory and&nbsp;saw&nbsp;Ukrainian soldiers.&nbsp;

"When we passed the first checkpoint, everyone started crying," he said.&nbsp;

"We had just one goal: that our&nbsp;children&nbsp;could live in&nbsp;Ukraine. They are Ukrainians, we can't imagine that they could live in another country," Tetiana insisted.

On&nbsp;Friday, the&nbsp;family&nbsp;crammed themselves and their meagre possessions into a crowded train heading for the western city of Lviv.

They then plan to move to Ivano-Frankivsk, another large city in western&nbsp;Ukraine, to try to rebuild a normal life.&nbsp;
