<p>The acquisition "further deepens our portfolio and fits within our financial framework, adding high-quality, low cost of supply inventory,"&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;chairman and chief executive officer Ryan Lance said in a company statement.</p>

<p>The deal, which includes the assumption of $5.4 billion in Marathon debt, is the latest in a series of acquisitions in the US oil sector, extending the lifespan of petroleum at a time when climate change advocates are pressuring producers to transition to carbon-free energy.</p>

<p>It will enable&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;to strengthen its position in shale oil and gas-rich regions such as the Bakken Basin in the northern United States, the Eagle Ford fields in Texas and the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico.</p>

<p>A company presentation highlighted the proximity of Marathon's acreage in these regions to&nbsp;ConocoPhillips' holdings, creating potential economies of scale.</p>

<p>The deal should see&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;achieve savings of $500 million in the year after completion, according to a&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;press release, largely due to reduced administrative and production costs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ConocoPhillips&nbsp;pledged to return excess cash to shareholders, saying it plans to boost its dividend by 34 per cent and expects more than $20 billion in share repurchases over the next three years.</p>

<p>The deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, gives Marathon Oil shareholders 0.255 shares of&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;common stock for each share of Marathon Oil common stock.</p>

<p>That represents a 14.7 per cent premium over Marathon Oil's closing price on Tuesday.</p>

<p>A note from JPMorgan Chase said the takeover solves a challenging outlook for Marathon, which has done "an excellent job in the field" but would have needed to do more "to address inventory renewal over time."</p>

<p>The 15 per cent premium was an "attractive alternative", said the JPMorgan note.</p>

<p>Shares of Marathon jumped 9.1 per cent in morning trading, while&nbsp;ConocoPhillips&nbsp;fell 3.1 per cent.</p>

<p>ConcoPhillips is the third biggest US oil company by market capitalisation after ExxonMobil and Chevron, both which announced major petroleum-focused takeovers last year.</p>

<p>World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a car crash in western Kenya that left a third passenger injured, police said Sunday (Feb 11).</p>

<p>The 24-year-old was driving from Kaptaget to Eldoret in western Kenya around 11 pm (2000 GMT) on Saturday (Feb 10) when the car rolled.</p>

<p>"The accident happened around 11 pm (2000 GMT). The car had three occupants, two died on the spot, while one was taken to hospital. The two are Kiptum and his coach," said Peter Mulinge, police commander for Elgeyo Marakwet County in western Kenya.</p>

<p>"It is Kiptum who was driving heading to Eldoret and the vehicle lost control and rolled, killing the two on the spot. A female passenger sustained injuries and has been rushed to hospital," he told reporters.</p>

<p>World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said he was "shocked and saddened to learn of the devastating loss".</p>

<p>"On behalf of all World Athletics, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation," Coe said in a statement.</p>

<p>Kiptum ran a world record 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon in October, taking 34 seconds off fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge's previous record.</p>

<p>Kiptum's run marked the third time a men's world record had been set on the streets of Chicago but the first time since Morocco's Khalid Khannouchi in 1999.</p>

<p>At the time, Kiptum was only 23 years old and competing in his third marathon.</p>

<p>World Athletics said Kiptum had not raced since then, but he had been due to compete at the Rotterdam Marathon in April where he was hoping to become the first man to break two hours for the marathon on a record-eligible course.</p>

<p>Kiptum won in his debut in 2022 at Valencia and then in the London Marathon in April last year.</p>

<p>Hakizimana, who is from Rwanda, was a runner who trained for years in Kenya, where he met Kiptum in the youth's village of Chepkorio.</p>

<p>Ten years ago, barely a teen, Kiptum herded goats and sheep then began following Hakizimana and other runners as they trained.</p>

<p>By 2019, Kiptum ran two half-marathons in two weeks, going 60:48 in Copenhagen and 59:53 in Belfort, France, and began training with Hakizimana, who stayed in Kenya when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.</p>

<p>Sukant Singh Suki, 33, recently achieved a feat that most people would find unfathomable. At the world's most difficult marathon, Delirious West in Australia, he completed 350 kilometres in 102 hours and 27 minutes.&nbsp;As per the&nbsp;<a href="https://deliriouswest200miler.com.au/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">official website of the Delirious W.E.S.T</a>, it is rated as one of the top 10 hardest 200 milers in the world. The Delirious West was held between February 8 and February 12, 2023, as reported by NDTV.</p>

<p>Also,&nbsp;Suki uploaded a video on his YouTube account showing him completing the marathon. At the finish line, spectators can be heard applauding the man. He discussed his adventure and how he covered a 350 km run in another video. In the video, he said that this marathon was among the hardest in the world.</p>

<p>"It is a mind game, at times you give up," the man said. "The biggest challenge for me was 4 nights without sleep, your brain stops working. I remember I was struggling so badly on days 2, 3, and 4. But the volunteers present at the event, helped me to complete this challenge."</p>

<p>According to the Guinness World Record, "The most consecutive days to run an ultra marathon distance (female) is 23, and was achieved by Megan Cassidy (USA) in Orlando, Florida, USA, from December 17, 2022 to January 8, 2023."</p>

<p>Cassidy beat the previous record of 22 days and intended to go much longer, but she was forced to give up on her quest to return to work.</p>

<p>They can't rely on changing scenery to keep them motivated as the route is a half-mile loop on a concrete sidewalk around a high school in Jamaica, Queens.</p>

<p>To mix things up a bit, they alternate daily between running clockwise one day and anti-clockwise the next.</p>

<p>"Definitely monotony," said this year's winner, Andrea Marcato, describing the biggest test of the&nbsp;race.</p>

<p>"The first week is quite challenging, especially for the mind. But after a while you get used to it. You have to accept that every day is going to be the same," he told AFP.</p>

<p>Participants have 52 days to run 3,100 miles (4,989 km), meaning they must average 59.6 miles every day.</p>

<p>They run, walk and hobble between 6:00 am and midnight, eating as they go to make up for the estimated 10,000 calories they burn during every session.</p>

<p>For the day's other six hours they sleep, wash and care for their blistered feet in nearby accommodation.</p>

<p>Only ultra-marathon veterans who have completed six-day races are allowed to enter.</p>

<h2><strong>Meditation</strong></h2>

<p>"It's a test of stamina, strength, inner determination, and talent," said&nbsp;race&nbsp;director Sahishnu Szczesiul.</p>

<p>Harita Davies, the sole woman of this year's seven competitors, said the&nbsp;race&nbsp;takes a physical toll&nbsp;but "the kind of unbelievable thing is that as the days and weeks go by your body actually does adapt, you do get stronger."</p>

<p>Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, who lived in New York before his death in 2007, founded the run in 1997.</p>

<p>He advocated "self-transcendence," using spirituality to go beyond the limits of what an individual thinks they can achieve.</p>

<p>Runners in the 25th edition, which began on September 5, said achieving a meditative state was key to completing the&nbsp;race.</p>

<p>"If the mind is focused, you don't have other thoughts or fears or worries or doubts," said Marcato, 39.</p>

<p>Meditating while navigating the 883-metre loop around Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School isn't easy though.</p>

<p>Runners go past a busy highway and basketball and handball courts. The route isn't cordoned off from everyday life and twice a day 2,000 school children flood the sidewalk.</p>

<p>Forty-seven-year-old New Zealander Davies listens to music, audiobooks and recordings of inspiring quotes.</p>

<p>"When you first come here you think oh my god it's a concrete jungle. But you can find beauty everywhere. You can look at the sky, the trees, the birds, the people," she told AFP.</p>

<p>The runners, who are also from Japan, Taiwan, Slovakia, Ukraine and Russia, have a small aid station at their disposal where a doctor is on hand to tend to blisters and shin splints.</p>

<p>Volunteers hand participants copious helpings of food -- from healthy vegan meals and juices to donut holes, ice-cream and sometimes Chinese takeout.</p>

<p>An RV with a bed provides for quick power naps while a rickety scoreboard displays the number of miles completed by each runner.</p>

<p>Supporters come by to clap while residents shout words of encouragement, although not everyone is sure what is going on.</p>

<p>"I grew up here and had no idea that it was a&nbsp;race. I just figured they were really into jogging," said 34-year-old Julio Quezada.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;race&nbsp;returned to New York after occurring in Austria last year due to the pandemic.</p>

<p>Marcato, from Italy, clocked his 3,100th mile late Sunday, completing the&nbsp;race&nbsp;in less than 43 days with an average of more than 72 miles per day.</p>

<p>He tore through some 16 pairs of shoes in the process and will receive a trophy but no prize money.</p>

<p>"This is the ultimate. It was my dream and here I am," said the passionate ultra-marathoner who works for a plant-based food company.</p>

<p>"The last two laps I was completely disconnected from my body. I didn't feel any pain. It was a really special sensation."</p>

<p>For New Zealander Harris, on track to complete the distance before the October 26 deadline, the&nbsp;race&nbsp;is an opportunity to "explore the frontiers of my capacity and potential" and "to make myself a better person."</p>

<p>When it ends, the healing process begins, which means lots of rest, sleep, food and patience.</p>

<p>But one element of the recovery is perhaps the hardest.</p>

<p>The soles of road running shoes cannot be thicker than four centimetres and Hurisa had worn a different set of shoes to the ones he had mentioned on his form.</p>

<p>"We also stressed in the technical meeting the rules about the shoes. Unfortunately, we had no other choice than disqualifying the athlete," race co-ordinator Hannes Langer said.</p>

<p>"It's the first time something like this has happened. I'm pretty sure that from now on there will be some form of checks to avoid something like this to happen again in a major race."</p>

<p>Kenya's Leonard Langat, who finished three seconds behind Hurisa, was declared the winner as a result.</p>

<p>"Of course I would have preferred to have broken the tape," Langat said.</p>
