“I am happy that I beat a French player in Paris. I defeated a higher-ranked player. I did not think of creating history and making the pre-quarters, there are more rounds, I will take it match by match and give my best as I always do,” Manika told news agency PTI after the win.

When asked about her strategy for the game, Batra revealed that 'breathing exercise during the match' helped her.

"I had planned to play to her forehand as discussed with my coach but I was getting the points on her backhand, so I did not change the tactics. I did play a few shot on her forehand too, I did not want her to think that I am playing only on her backhand. It was a tough match. Staying relaxed helps me both on and off the court. I do breathing exercises that help me during the match. I will give my best whoever I play against in the next round,” she added.

CWG 2022, Day 1 for Team India: Harmanpreet-led Indian eves, women's hockey stars, Manika & Co. in action

The Indian women`s table tennis team started its defence of the title it won four years ago at Gold Coast by outplaying South Africa 3-0 in a Group 2 preliminary round match at Hall 3 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Solihull, here on Friday. 
 
The team spearheaded by star paddler Manika Batra did not have to break a sweat as it handed South Africa a comprehensive defeat. Manika won her singles match in straight games against Musfiquh Kalam, Reeth Tennison and Sreeja Akula won the doubles while Sreeja Akula overcame Danisha Patel for a comprehensive 3-0 win for the favourites. 
 
Reeth and Sreeja set the ball rolling for India as they defeated the South African pair of Laitaa Edwards and Danisha Jayavant Patel 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. Reeth and Sreeja took an early lead in each of the three games in the best of five games match and did not allow their lower-ranked opponents many chances. 
 
Manika Batra was at the table for the first singles game and thoroughly outplayed her opponent, Musfiquh Kalam, allowing her to win only 10 points combined in the three games, romping to an 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 win in double quick time. 
 
Sreeja took to the table for the second single and defeated Danisha Patel 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6) to seal victory for India in the best-of-five match in Group 2 in which Guyana and Fiji are India`s other opponents besides South Africa.

Though their opponents were not so strong, Manika Batra said they went in strong as they wanted to get their rhythm going early. `It was not too tough, we went in as if to play our best to prepare for the next round,` said Manika after the match. 
 
The highest-seeded Indian woman player is the star attraction of the table tennis competition after bagging gold in team and women`s singles competition at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. However, Manika said she did not feel any pressure of the heightened expectations following her Gold Coast heroics. 
 
`I always go into a tournament thinking that is a new tournament and whatever happened in the previous one has no bearing on this. Pressure will always be there, after all, I am a player. But I try to look ahead and keep my focus,` said Manika after the match. 
 
She said they have a young team as the others are playing in their first Commonwealth Games and she tries to talk to them and share her experiences so that they can learn from that.

India's Manika Batra and Archana Girish Kamath bagged the women's doubles title at the World Table Tennis Contender Lasko 2021 event, beating Puerto Rico's Diaz sisters, Adriana and Melanie, in three games in the final on Sunday. 
 
Manika and Archana, ranked 33rd in the ITTF World Rankings, claimed their first title in the WTT Contender series by defeating the Diaz sisters 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 12-10) in a one-sided contest. 
 
This is the second successive week that an Indian pair has won a title in the WTT Contender Series. Last week in WTT Contender Tunis 2021 event, India's G Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai had won the men's doubles title.

In the women`s doubles final played on Sunday, Manika and Archana established early ascendancy and never allowed the Puerto Rican pair to make a comeback. The first game was totally one-sided and the Indians nailed powerful smashes and capitalised on the errors by their opponents. 
 
The second game was a bit closer and though the Diaz sisters put up a good fight, the Indians always remained close and went on to take a 2-0 lead. 
 
Manika and Archana had opened a handy lead in the third game as they led 6-3 at one stage before the Diaz sisters won seven points in a row to take a 10-6 lead. The Indian regrouped and clawed back into the game, hitting precision shots. They got back the lead and then won six points in a row to eventually win the game 12-10.

The WTT Contender Lasko event is the penultimate stop in the series. The caravan will remain in Lasko for the WTT Contender Nova Mesto 2021 event from November 11-14, before the WTT Championships Finals to be held at Houston, the USA, from November 23-29.

WTT Contender Lasko: Manika Batra, Archana Kamath win women's doubles crown

The Delhi High Court on Thursday stayed the Table Tennis Federation of India's mandate on compulsory attendance at the National Coaching Camp in order to be selected for any upcoming international event and asked the Centre to conduct an inquiry into Manika Batra's complaint against the sports body.

Justice Rekha Palli further said that if warranted, the Union Sports Ministry may look into the affairs of the TTFI as well.

Justice Palli was hearing a plea by Batra who was left out of the Indian contingent for the upcoming Asian Table Tennis Championships and has alleged that the national coach Soumyadeep Roy pressurized her to throw away&nbsp;an Olympic qualifier match in favour of one of his personal trainees.

The judge said the rule mandating compulsory attendance at the national camp has been enforced at a point when there was a complaint pending against the national coach? and the same? does not inspire confidence?.

The court also expressed anguish&nbsp;at the manner in which a committee, constituted by the federation to look into the allegations, was reconstituted after it sought centre's stand on the issue. 
?They are overreaching the court. I will issue a notice of contempt. I pass an order and you appoint a new person. This is shocking... I am expressing my anguish,? the judge stated.

I am of the view that the operation of the rule is required to the stayed till the next date of hearing. Respondent no. 2 (Sports Ministry)...Is itself inclined to hold an inquiry into the serious allegations by the petitioner. There is no reason why respondent no 1 (federation) should continue with its rule,? she ordered.

Respondent no 2 will proceed to hold an inquiry at the earliest...Furnish a copy of the report to the court,? it was added.

The court clarified that at this stage, it was not appointing any committee to look into the issues and directed that the Centre's inquiry report be placed before it in four weeks.

It added that the centre may seek the stand of the national coach and also issued notice on the petition, which was listed for further hearing on October 28.

Senior counsel Sachin Dutta, appearing for Batra, said his client was not desirous of participating in the upcoming Asian Table Tennis Championships.

Some (tournaments) are starting from October 24 and world championship is in November. The event (Asian Table Tennis Championship) is next week and training happens in Pune,? he said.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Centre, stated that the federation's rule on compulsorily attending the national camp was in the teeth of the sports code and defeated merit. He informed that the centre would initiate an inquiry into the athlete's allegation.

Advocate Hrishikesh Baruah, representing TTFI, defended the rule and stated that such a mandate was present on other sports as well including weight lifting and judo. 
The lawyer clarified that his client had no say on grant of access to a venue to Batra's personal coach and physiotherapist at any sporting event.

He argued that the federation has no problem with holding a fair inquiry into Batra's allegations and that claimed that the national coach was not even present at the national camp which she refused to attend.

In the petition, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Khel Ratna awardee has alleged that the federation was carrying out its selection processes in a non-transparent manner, targeting certain individuals such as herself. 
She has asserted that the national coach, in a clear conflict of interest, was running a private table tennis academy simultaneously and on one occasion, pressurized the petitioner to throw away a match only with a view to help one of his trainees at his private academy to qualify for the Olympics, 2020.

This incident happened on 17.03.2021 in respect of the match to be held on 18.03.2021 at the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, 2021 organized by ATTU. Not only did the Petitioner refused to comply with such an unethical, illegal and immoral request, but she also immediately communicated this to the Adviser, TTFI, on 18.03.2021,? the plea reads.

"After conclusion of Olympics, the Respondent No.1 (federation) issued Rules and Regulations dated 04.08.2021 (received by the Petitioner on 27.08.2021) informing her that attending of National Coaching Camp is compulsory, failing which she would not be selected for any upcoming international event," it further reads.

The plea states that Table Tennis is an individual sport, which requires specialised training with support staff and thus the rule against personal coaching is arbitrary, irrational, absurd and have no nexus with achieving excellence in an individualised sport.&nbsp;

HC asks Centre to conduct inquiry into allegations against TT body by Manika Batra

The Table Tennis Federation of India Secretary General Arun Kumar Banerjee has made it clear that Manika Batra's refusal to have national coach Soumyadeep Roy by her side during matches at the Tokyo Olympics will be taken up for discussion once the contingent returns to India.

Banerjee said the executive committee will decide on the course of action that needs to be taken since it was unprofessional from Manika to call Soumyadeep the personal coach of Sutirtha Mukherjee.

Manika had earlier requested India's chef-de-mission BP Baishya to allow the field of play (FOP) access for her personal coach Sanmay Paranjape.

But MP Singh said FOP access for Manika's personal coach wasn't granted and the federation has to see what do when these type of situations arises next time. "We are not against players but she should tell this to the government. Last-minute her personal coach got approval to travel to Tokyo but FOP access was not granted to him," said MP Singh. "I think keeping this incident in mind we will have to make a rule that if this happens next time who will take a call," he added.

India's Manika Batra made a comeback to dominate the third match after losing the initial two against Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine in the second round of the women's singles table tennis event.

In the third game, Manika appeared to be defending more, and that appeared to have filled in as she changed the pace of the game. She hoped to get into an ever-increasing number of rallies as the game advanced. The Indian paddler won the third to remain alive in the challenge.&nbsp;

The two players contended well in the fourth game as it went last minute. Manika looked more positive in that game. It was a teeter-totter fight. The Indian paddler thought of a sublime backhand winner to get the game point. That was the point that appeared to have changed her mind inside and out.&nbsp;

In the third game, Manika appeared to be defending more, and that appeared to have filled in as she changed the pace of the game. Manika looked more positive in that game. It was a teeter-totter fight. The Indian paddler thought of a sublime backhand winner to get the game point. That was the point that appeared to have changed her mind inside and out. The number of cases of novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 341 on Sunday after fresh cases were reported in various parts of the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said.

Seven people have been declared dead.

Sixty private labs have registered so far to conduct tests. Many of them are in the process of being approved.

In addition to this, Section 144 of CrPC will be imposed in Delhi with effect from 9 pm on March 22 to 12 midnight of March 31.

Indian table tennis earned the world's respect in a watershed 2018 when the country won a historic two medals at the Asian Games after Manika Batra's unprecedented showing at the Commonwealth Games.

Sharath Kamal, arguably India's finest player who is still going strong at 36, summed up the year aptly.&nbsp;

"At the start of the year, if anyone would have said we will win one, let alone two medals at the Asian Games, I would have laughed it off. It has been that kind of year. Best ever year for me and best ever for Indian table tennis," the veteran told PTI.&nbsp;

The Sharath-led men's team exceeded its own expectations by winning a bronze at the Asian Games in Jakarta after stunning mighty Japan in the quarter-finals.&nbsp;

His younger teammate G Sathiyan delivered under pressure by winning both his singles against higher-ranked opponents.&nbsp;

The dream run did not end there as Sharath and Manika landed a mixed doubles bronze which has given them the belief that they are good enough to win an Olympic medal.&nbsp;

To put the achievement in perspective, it was the first time that India returned home with an Asian Games medal ever since table tennis was introduced in the mega event's program in 1958. The stellar performance forced even the 'invincible' Chinese to take notice.&nbsp;

While the sport took giant strides, a star too was born with Manika pocketing as many as four medals including two historic gold medals in women's team and women's singles.&nbsp;

She beat the then world number four and Olympic medallist, Feng Tianwei of Singapore, twice to step on the top of the podium.

She later added a doubles silver and mixed doubles bronze to her kitty to become the most successful Indian athlete at the Gold Coast Games.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Considering the bar she has set for herself, the world number 52 will have to keep improving to compete with the global best. It was only fitting that she ended the year by becoming the first Indian to win the Breakthrough Star award at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) awards in Incheon.&nbsp;

Sharath and Sathiyan too ended 2018 on a high as they attained their best ever rankings. Sharath is 30th in the latest list and a place below him is Sathiyan.&nbsp;

"Considering the kind of year we have had, we have to keep performing to maintain the momentum we have got. It is all about preparing for the 2020 Olympics now. Our best chance is in mixed doubles and Manika and I have already planned the roadmap leading up to the Tokyo Games," said Sharath.&nbsp;

Next year will see the players featuring in 14 to 16 events as they aim for the Olympic qualification.&nbsp;

Italian coach Massimo Costantini, who guided India to a record showing in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, has joined the ITTF and the players need a new coach at the earliest.&nbsp;

"While the TTFI is looking for the best available coach, we are losing momentum. 2019 is an important year ahead of the Olympics and whoever comes in will need at least three months to understand the Indian system. So, it is imperative that the coach is appointed as soon as possible," Sharath added.&nbsp;

While India can now aim for an Olympic medal, it got really close to winning one at the Youth Olympics in Argentina where the young Archana Kamath went down fighting in the bronze medal play-off.&nbsp;

Otherwise, it would have been another historic moment in a truly historic year.&nbsp;

India's Manika Batra on Wednesday became the first Indian Table Tennis player to be decorated with the 'Breakthrough Table Tennis Star' award at the prestigious International Table Tennis Federation Star Awards in Incheon.

"I am really honoured and happy to have received the award. I feel, 2018 has been the best year of my career so far and I am happy for what I have achieved," Manika said at the ceremony.

"I would like to thank the Government, the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and most importantly, my family, who has been there for me and motivated me along this journey," she added.

Manika started the year on a high at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, guiding India to its first-ever gold medal in the Women's Team category as they defeated four-time gold medallists and defending champions Singapore 3-1.

She bagged another gold in the women's singles category, defeating former World No. 4 Feng Tianwei. She added two more medals to her kitty by winning a silver in the women's doubles' and a bronze in the mixed doubles categories.&nbsp;

The 23-year-old Arjuna awardee then partnered India's legendary Sharath Kamal to clinch a bronze in the mixed doubles category of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Manika also reached her career-best ranking of 52 in 2018 and became India's highest ranked female player.

TTFI's General Secretary MP Singh congratulated the Indian star.
