This is not the first time that BJP government and its topmost leadership is embarrassed by the statements made by MP Pragya Thakur. Pragya was elected in 2019 Lok Sabha election and she was projected by BJP as a victim of UPA’s agenda against Hindus in the country.

Pragya was shown as a victim of a regime which was more invested in minorities than the majority community.

The politics of Pragya yielded rich dividends to BJP despite gaffes made her during the campaign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to make a statement that he would never forgive Pragya. I do not know whether she was forgiven but certainly, things she said were promptly forgotten by the ruling dispensation.

The top leadership continued to reaffirm its faith in Gandhi but ensured that Pragya Singh Thakur was politically accommodated. She was accommodated as a member in one of the Parliamentary Committees. Her honeymoon continued till she dropped another bomb in Lok Sabha by calling Nathuram Godse a patriot. It shocked everyone. Her statement shocked BJP more as party understood the damage her statement has made. She damaged Narendra Modi.

The biggest political service which Narendra Modi has done to RSS and BJP is ending the stigma that RSS philosophy was behind Gandhi’s assassination. Modi broke those mental shackles by adopting Gandhi very creatively.

It is was a big departure in Indian politics. Narendra Modi appropriated Gandhi in a way that it left Congress ideologically high and dry. He adopted his campaigns and ensured public participation. He brought Gandhi out of the classrooms and seminar circuit.

Pragya by making that statement in Lok Sabha killed that six degree of separation. Pragya is a terror accused. Till the case continues, she remains an accused. She can also be a victim of a campaign but now where it brings Gandhi into the picture. It was a political battle between Congress and BJP. Nothing more and nothing less.

In past, she was projected as a victim of minority politics. Today she is an assault on Hindu sensibilities. Mahatma’s assassination in the Hindu psyche is akin to patricide and Pragya by trying to eulogise Nathuram Godse has put the spotlight on BJP.

Is hatred of Gandhi fundamental to the ideology of Hindutva? Does Pragya’s thought represent BJP’s mainstream? If the thought does not represent BJP’s mainstream, then how come she gets away with a light penalty? Lastly, if the government is so committed to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi then how come Pragya continues to remain in the same august house?

These questions will need to be answered by BJP and RSS. The government will need to take a clear stand on Pragya Singh Thakur and Nathuram Godse. Nathuram cannot be wished away as a misguided patriot. He nursed hatred against Gandhi and believed that he gave away more to Muslims. Token punishment will not work now as she again crossed a red line in the sacred house.

BJP under Modi has evolved into a big party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must ask Pragya Singh Thakur to step down if he really wants every Indian to believe that his commitment towards Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and life is real and resolute. It will only make him tall.

Gandhi pioneered non-violent movements that changed history: U.N. Secretary-General on Gandhi's 150th anniversary

Remembering Gandhi has turned into a political contest between liberal parties and RSS-BJP combine in India. Unlike in the past when RSS stayed away from open appropriation of Gandhi, the Congress and other like-minded parties did whatever they wanted to do with the national icon.

In my observation, he got confined to classrooms and the lecture circuit. Gandhi ended up becoming a political tool for the protection of political constituency which he made during his lifetime but was inherited by existing leadership of the Congress Party.

Narendra Modi’s appropriation of Gandhi with his Swachh Bharat campaign opened the pandora’s box. It resulted in an intense debate on who owes Gandhi? Can RSS even appropriate Gandhi? Does RSS even have the right to appropriate Gandhi when it was intensely opposed to Gandhi’s worldview of the nation, faith, religion, and freedom struggle. In fact, it is an open secret that the RSS stayed away from Gandhi’s call of the Quit India movement. The ideologues of RSS and Hindu Mahasabha like VD Savarkar were intensely opposed to Gandhi. Even in the recent general election, BJP fielded Pragya Singh Thakur who openly praised Nathuram Godse. The question then arises as to how the pendulum has swung the other way and how come the Indian ‘Right’ has appropriated a part of Gandhi.

The biggest battle of RSS has been the charge that their ideology was complicit in the assassination of Gandhi. The charge was that even if Godse was not part of RSS, he represented RSS’s hatred towards Gandhi. What happened post-2014 elections, turned things upside down. Modi not only identified Gandhi as the icon for Swachh Bharat but turned it into a public connect event. It led to the participation of children and civil society groups and re-imagination of Gandhi which was not associated with the tense relationship of Gandhi with RSS during India's Independence and partition.

The failure of the Congress was to confine Gandhi to bhajan sessions and lecture circuit which was devoid of public resonance and participation. Gandhi was appropriated by the Congress as a political ideology devoid of public participation and current issues which concerned the people.

The best critique of this approach did not flow from Modi. It started from films like Munna Bhai MBBS and the Anna Hazare agitation. The former imagined Gandhi in the context of love, violence, and sense of coolness and the second movement was about corruption in public life. The truth was in everyone’s face. Gandhi is not an end-to-end programme like Apple. You can appropriate what you like, and you would not be labeled a heretic. The beauty of Gandhi is that his philosophy is like an open source software which has demonstrated the ability to absorb new trends again and again.

It is for this reason, the debate on who owes Gandhi is meaningless. If you can follow any aspect of Gandhi, it is enough as it is not mandatory to be him or follow him in toto. Politicians have different reasons to imbibe him, but the truth is that Gandhi will be seen differently by people at different points of time. This re-interpretation of Gandhi must be allowed. Whether people find BJP’s move genuine or not will be decided by the electorate, but it is foolish to grudge Narendra Modi that he has wiped the worst stigma around RSS and that being their ideology behind the assassination of Gandhi.

Unlike other parties, Modi did not participate in the lecture circuit. He took to the broom and here lies the answer as to why historical figures and their legacy cannot be cast in stone. Their legacy will always be seen in the context of present circumstances. Today, plastic and waste makes society anxious. It connects rich with poor the way Gandhi’s Dandi Yatra connected every Indian when the Mahatama picked up the issue of salt satyagraha. By taking up the issue of sanitation and the problem of plastic, Modi has taken a leaf from Gandhi’s political campaign tool.

Social problems can only be resolved through public participation. A participation that does not disrupt life dramatically but even a minimum contribution allows a sense being part of a bigger deal. This was the beauty or one of the beauties of Gandhi’s philosophy. It is in play even today. Let’s not grudge who appropriates him and how is in play today.
Unbundling Gandhi: Claiming the Mahatma's Legacy

South Africa has lauded India's role in climate solutions and said the relationship between the two countries is strengthening. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal in New York, South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that India is certainly beginning to lead the way in key solutions to world problems. He also called Mahatma Gandhi a South African hero.

Below is the full transcript of the conversation

WION: What is the status of the ties between India and South Africa?

Naledi Pandor: The ties are extremely strong. India and South Africa are old friends, we have a lot of South Africans whose families originated in India. Their roots are still in India.

India also supported South Africa in the struggle for freedom. India has been a good friend of South Africa during the freedom [struggle], we continued to be partners in BRICS family and the relations are strengthening every year.

Watch: WION exclusively speaks to South Africa's foreign Minister Naledi Pandor

WION: India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. How do you see it?

Naledi Pandor: I think that it is very important for countries to commemorate leaders who have founded our democracies but who have also made an important contribution to the world political philosophy. Mahatma Gandhi, with his wonderful attention to non-violent struggle made a deep impression on our leaders like Nelson Mandela and in fact was a precursor to the concept of mass mobilisation which influenced much of the struggle for freedom in South Africa. So Mahatma stands for us as a great example and is remembered in South Africa as a hero of South Africa as much as he is considered a Mahatma in India.

WION: India has been focusing on providing a solution to the climate change issue... how do you see India's role?

Naledi Pandor: Well, I think that India is certainly beginning to lead the way in showing what some solutions are and the speech that was made by Prime Minister Modi during the Climate Change Summit in the UN was a very important speech where he reported on the steps being taken by the government of India in order to address what is a massive global challenge. Solar energy, renewable sources of energy of all kinds, are very important. We are using solar, renewable, as wells as biomass as new sources of energy and of course India is renowned in advances in innovation, so we look forward to our collaboration with India to build even more solutions to climate change challenges that confront us. India has agriculture as one of the core basis of its economy, and similarly, South Africa relies on agriculture. We have to look at land recovery, new technology and at how to best use our water resources in order to respond to the challenges of climate change.

WION: You met with BRICS foreign ministers. What was the focus?

Naledi Pandor: Well, I think that BRICS is an extremely important grouping because it holds up the values of cooperation and of multilateralism. For me, BRICS is a progressive global forum of countries that have among the largest populations in the region and that play a very important role both in regional affairs as well as world affairs. I believe the work that is being done in BRICS is going to illustrate to the world the value of partnership and collaboration. Our deliberations as foreign ministers went very well today. We got a report from Brazil, which is the current BRICS chair and we will have the summit in November. We also got the indication from Russia, who will assume the chair in 2020 as to what their plans and thinking are for their year of chairing the BRICS family.

WION: What is your view on the Indo-Pacific concept?

Naledi Pandor: We are members of IORA which is the Indian Ocean Rim Association. South Africa has been playing the leadership role there, this brings many nations together and I think that whatever we do with the oceans, we need to understand that we are drawing together many nations because I think oceans are a shared resource and they don't belong to a particular country. Therefore, whatever we do, any alliance that we build must understand these needs to be inclusive alliances who are all surrounded by the ocean benefit from it.

Watch: WION exclusively speaks to South Africa's foreign Minister Naledi Pandor WION: India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Tributes paid to Mahatma Gandhi at UNHRC to mark his 150th birth anniversary

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday hailed Mahatma Gandhi's unifying power of inter-faith and inter-cultural understanding that bind all people and all religions across the globe, at a cultural event hosted by India at the United Nations.

Addressing an event to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), along with other world leaders, Ardern said, "At a time when religion could have been used to divide us we saw the unifying power of inter-faith and inter-cultural understanding. Gandhi himself understood the inner truths of all faiths of dignity and humanity that bind all people and all religion."

"Gandhi himself said that we should cultivate non-violence in our daily lives along with truthfulness, humility, and tolerance. These are challenges not only faced by my country but others across the globe as well," she added.

The Prime Minister started her speech by saying 'Namaste' and stated, "Our presence here is a reflection of the close ties between India and New Zealand and also the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi which was felt in the farthest corners of the globe including New Zealand."

"I had first heard of the Mahatma when I was a schoolgirl," she started.

"Gandhi himself understood the inner truths of all faiths of dignity and humanity that bind all people and all religion. Like Gandhi, we should not be afraid to stand up and transform our society for the better," the prime minister stressed further.

Yet in the face of this act of hatred and violence, the Muslim community in New Zealand opened doors for all New Zealanders and the world to grieve with them.

The act of peace was a powerful and empowering message.

Ardern also said that Gandhi had mulled the expression of political dissent through non-violent opposition.

"It is critical to resolving tensions in a peaceful manner. I believe that Gandhi's legacy as relevant as it was before. It calls on us to reject bigotry and embrace kindness and truth," she told the attendees.

In her concluding remarks, she said, "We look forward to Gandhi's principles to address the pressing problems. There are three aspects of Gandhi message that carry particular weight: tolerance, equality and quantity of non-violence and peace."
