"Both our nations, strong democracies have been tested of late, very much tested. Our institutions are put in jeopardy. Both the United States and Brazil. Democracy prevailed for both the United States and Brazil. Democracy prevailed," Biden said at the White House meet.&nbsp;

"We reject political violence and we put great value in our democratic institutions. Our shared values and the strong ties between our people&nbsp;make Brazil, the United States, especially here in the big global challenges – they put us on the same page, and particularly, especially in climate crisis," Biden continued.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Lula expressed will to reposition Brazil in the new world and geopolitics. He thanked Biden for "solidarity and for acknowledging my ... When I was sworn in office." He acknowledged Biden's "posturing, the defence of democracy. And last but not the least, to congratulate you for your speech, the State of the Union two days ago."

Referring to his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, Lula pointed out that the former president "did not enjoy to keep international relations with any country. His world started and ended with fake news. In the morning, afternoon and at night. It seems that he despised international relations."

Bolsonaro flew to Florida two days before his term ended on Jan. 1, having challenged the results of the Oct. 30 runoff election that he narrowly lost to Lula. Days later, a violent group of election-denying Bolsonaro supporters stormed Brazil's presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court.

Bolsonaro, who lost to Lula in the 30th October runoff election, boarded a flight to Florida two days before his tenure came to an end on 1st January. He had contested the outcome of the election.&nbsp;

"Many people in the military police were complicit. There were many people in the armed forces here inside [the palace] who were complicit," the leftist political veteran said four days after the attack.

"This chap has managed to pollute the entire armed forces," Lula added of Bolsonaro, who escaped to the US on the eve&nbsp;of the January 1 inauguration and refused to accept defeat in last October's polls.

According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Lula has fired at least 80 military personnel from their positions in the last five days in an apparent effort to purge ardent Bolsonaro supporters.

General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, the 62-year-old commander of the military command in charge of the southeast in So Paulo, will take over from Arruda.

Ribeiro Paiva has&nbsp;asked troops to accept the outcome of the election from last October, which Lula won by roughly two million votes, in a speech shared on social media on Friday.

"It doesn’t matter [what the result of an election is], it must be respected. It might not always be what we want, but that doesn’t matter," Ribeiro Paiva asserted, regardless of whatever their commander-in-chief was, the military will carry out its task.

Lula welcomed the invite on social media.

"I am excited to talk with President Biden and deepen the relationship between our countries," he tweeted.

Even though Lula has yet to be inaugurated, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said it made sense to invite him now.

"We want to hit the ground running with that relationship, that important bilateral relationship that we have with Brazil," she told reporters during a briefing.

The leftist leader won Brazil's presidential election in October, defeating far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, who was an ally of former President Donald Trump and was the last G20 leader to recognize Biden's 2020 victory.

The far&nbsp;right's attempts&nbsp;to invalidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva being elected president&nbsp;of Brazil were thwarted when a much-anticipated investigation from Brazil's defence ministry failed to find evidence of recent ballots being cast unlawfully.

Following weeks of speculations&nbsp;that it would embolden accusations by extremist president Jair Bolsonaro that the election was rigged, the military late on Wednesday delivered the 63-page report to Brazil's electoral authorities.

Bolsonaro, an ex-army captain, had hinted for months that he wouldn't accept defeat and regularly questioned the reliability of Brazil's electronic voting machines, while offering no proof to support his claims.&nbsp;

The leftward shift in South America began in 2020 in Bolivia; gained momentum in 2021 with right-wing politicians being worsted in presidential elections in Peru, Chile, Honduras and Nicaragua; and, continues on its winning trajectory. The first to score in 2022 was Colombia and now it is Brazil rooting for Lula and his pro-poor policies which are opposed to the ecological degradation that was rampant under Bolsanaro.&nbsp;

Lula’s victory is far more important than that of the left in that region. Brazil’s population, the size of its economy and its place in international bodies and multilateral forums invest the political outcome with a significance that should resonate far beyond South America. &nbsp;

Conventional, and dominant narratives, have presented that course of democracy as moving from the West to the rest of the world. (This “West” excludes South America). Less known and taught are that South American countries experienced their first democratic impulses in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The revival of truly inclusive and representative democracies in South America striving for equity, justice and accountability and founded on a new political language may now shape new accounts of the history of democracy. &nbsp;

Anachronistic accounts of history that flog the theme of the best of democracy flowing only from the West to the rest may be in for revision. At a time when the US, Europe and Asia are witnesses to the rise of backward nationalism, violent majoritarianism and neo-fascist forces, election outcomes in South America are cause for hope. &nbsp;

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed.

Lula is no stranger to the President’s office as the 77-year-old held the position for two terms from 2003 to 2011. Such was his popularity and approval ratings in Brazil that former United States President Barack Obama once called him “the most popular president on Earth”.

The former factory worker, who was well-known for his work with trade unions, rose to popularity among the leftist movement in the 1980s. It was a direct response to Brazil’s military dictatorship of the period and Lula went on to form the Workers’ party (PT) along with other leftist leaders.

While he was quite popular with a majority of the country’s population, Lula failed to win the presidential elections in both 1994 and 1998. The leftist voters kept supporting his campaigns but an opposition from factory owners and big businesses meant that his dream remained unfulfilled.

However, with strategic partnerships with business leaders and a stronger coalition, Lula finally won the elections in 2002. What followed was a golden period for the Brazilian economy with a lucrative trade deal with China and the impact of two major events - 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

However, his two terms as President were not without controversies. While Lula’s approval ratings remained at an all-time high, his government was embroiled in multiple corruption scandals. The accusations continued even when Dilma Rousseff - Lula’s handpicked successor – became president and in 2016, the reigning PT government had to let go of their position amid rising tensions.

Lula went on to challenge Bolsonaro on a pro-development platform and even gained support from the indigenous population of the country who were not happy with the current regime. He also gained support from his existing left-leaning voter case and while Bolsonaro’s pitch of a more traditional Brazil remained popular, it was not enough to stop the re-emergence of Lula.

The survey has also shown that 94 per cent of Brazilian voters have decided who they will vote for. This leaves 6 per cent of voters both candidates will try hard to sway.

It was the first Datafolha survey since the presidential debate on Sunday, where Bolsonaro attacked corruption scandals under Lula's Workers Party, which governed from 2003 to 2016.

Datafolha interviewed 2,912 voters between Oct. 17-19.

Datafolha was one of the several polling firms that received&nbsp;criticism&nbsp;for underestimating support for Bolsonaro in the first round of voting. In the election, Lula had garnered 48 per cent while Bolsonaro got 43 per cent of the votes.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro and leftist challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva exchanged jabs and insults as they faced off in the first head-to-head debate. The debate took place with Brazil's presidential runoff elections two weeks away.

Lula attacked Bolsonaro calling him the "king of fake news" and a "tiny little dictator". In return, he drew accusations of lying, corruption and a "disgraceful record" from his opponent.

Lula is the charismatic but tarnished ex-president (2003-2010) who is eyeing a comeback at the age of 76. He was particularly fiery as he criticised Bolsonaro over handling of the Covid pandemic. 687,000 people died in Brazil due to Covid-19, second only to the US.

Attacking Bolsonaro over his resistance to buying vaccines and touting of unproven medications such as hydroxychloroquine, Lula said the president "carries the weight of those deaths on his shoulders."

"Your negligence led to 680,000 people dying, when more than half could have been saved," the ex-metalworker said in his trademark gravelly voice.

"No other leader in the world played around with the pandemic and with death the way you did."

Bolsonaro (67) tried to drag the debate's focus to the corruption issue. This was a weak spot for Lula who was jailed in 2018 on now overturned graft charges.

"Your past is disgraceful... You did nothing for Brazil but stuff public money in your pockets and those of your friends," Bolsonaro said.

"Lula, stop lying, it's bad for you at your age," said the ex-army captain at another point, simultaneously defending his own record and taking a shot at his rival's age.

Bolsonaro, the vitriolic hardline conservative who took office in 2019, finished second in the first-round election on October 2 with 43 percent of the vote, to 48 percent for Lula.

But many opinion polls had put Lula's lead in the double digits.

Bolsonaro's stronger-than-expected performance has given him an aura of momentum heading into the runoff, and increased speculation over the possibility of another surprise in two weeks' time.

Lula, who was in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, said that there was a “climate of hatred in the electoral process which is completely abnormal”. He also requested the authorities to look more into the violence and find out if these attacks “had been ordered, or guided, or if it is a political strategy”.
