US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, currently on a two-day visit to India, met his&nbsp;counterpart Rajnath Singh on Monday. "I don't want to get into speculation...a number of things can always happen. I&nbsp;want to make sure we do everything we can to ensure things don't happen. And part of that is to communicate with each other and prevent any incidents from escalating out of control," said Austin.&nbsp;

<h2>India-China relations continue to deteriorate&nbsp;</h2>

Since 2020, the relationship between India and China has remained frosty, primarily due to Beijing's incursion along the border areas. Though China has attempted to intrude into Indian territories for years, it was the Galwan Valley standoff in 2020 that really deteriorated the relations.&nbsp;

Both countries have held more than a dozen rounds of military talks but to no avail. In 2021, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in its annual report stated that China's attempt to change the status quo had impacted the bilateral relationship.&nbsp;

In March, US media reports claimed that Washington&nbsp;provided intel to India&nbsp;to thwart the Chinese threat along the border last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The reports claimed that the US government, for the first time, provided real-time insights to their Indian counterparts. The details helped India neutralise the incursion attempts by the PLA troops in Northeastern India's Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang Sector.&nbsp;

"India was able to repel a Chinese military incursion in contested border territory in the high Himalayas late last year due to unprecedented intelligence-sharing with the US military," read one of the reports.&nbsp;

No NATO in Indo-Pacific

During the same presser, Austin was probed if the US was attempting to establish NATO&nbsp;forces in the region, to which he gave a definitive answer.&nbsp;

"We are absolutely not trying to establish a NATO in the Indo-Pacific. We continue to work with like-minded countries to ensure that the region remains free and open so that commerce can prosper and ideas can continue to be exchanged," said Austin.&nbsp;

"India and US share the same vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific. We want to make sure that we do everything we can to ensure that things don't happen," he added.&nbsp;

Though Beijing didn't officially snub the meet invite,&nbsp;Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday blamed the US for the recent escalation in tension. It said Washington should&nbsp; “earnestly respect China’s sovereignty and security interests and concerns, immediately correct the wrongdoing, show sincerity, and create the necessary atmosphere and conditions for dialogue and communication between the two militaries".&nbsp;

<h2>The aircraft incident&nbsp;</h2>

Notably, last week, a Chinese plane “flew directly in front of and within 400 feet of the nose of the RC-135, forcing the US aircraft to fly through its wake turbulence".&nbsp;In a declassified video footage, a fighter plane is seen crossing in front of the American aircraft which appears to be shaking due to the resulting turbulence.

A senior US defence official stated that there has been an “alarming increase in the number of risky aerial intercepts and confrontations at sea” by Chinese aircraft and ships – actions that “have the potential to create an unsafe incident or miscalculation”.

Despite the cancellation, experts are of the view that the meeting would have been a futile attempt to bridge any tension between the two countries.&nbsp;Last year, Austin met Li's predecessor Wei Fenge at Shangri-La Dialogue privately but the meeting did little to mend the deteriorating ties.&nbsp;

Since the spy balloon incident earlier this year and the subsequent cancellation of&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Beijing, the relations have remained frosty. Declining the US invite is being seen as an attempt by Beijing to even the scales.&nbsp;

The US&nbsp;defence secretary's Sweden visit coincides with the Scandinavian nation's biggest military exercise for more than a quarter of a century, Aurora 23.

Around 700 US marines will take part in the exercise along with troops from Britain, Finland, Poland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Denmark, Austria, Germany and France.

In total, around 26,000 military personnel will take part in exercises around Sweden on land, at sea and in the air.

Along with Finland, Sweden applied to join NATO in May last year. Finland's application was processed in record time and it became the 31st member of the alliance earlier this month.

Sweden's accession has been held up by Turkey and Hungary, who have not&nbsp;yet ratified Sweden as a NATO member.

However, he arrived in Tel Aviv on Thursday and is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant near the Ben Gurion Airport, according to a report by the Al-Monitor.&nbsp;

Earlier, a&nbsp;US official, who did not wish to be identified said, that Washington was concerned that escalating tensions in West Bank could distract Israel and US' attention from Iranian activities. "Secretary Austin is perfectly capable of having conversations about both issues (West Bank and Iran)," the official told the news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

However, the official said that Israel’s preoccupation with the West Bank "detracts from our ability to focus on what the strategic threat is right now and that is Iran's dangerous nuclear advances and continuing regional and global aggression."

"Austin is committed to Israel's security, but one of the dominant ways in which we've been able to work together and strengthen that relationship is because we're two democracies that share values," the official further told Reuters, adding, one of those values included the right to protest.

The US defence secretary's visit to Israel comes as three Palestinian men were shot dead by the Israeli forces in West Bank on Thursday. The men were shot in Jaba, near the flashpoint northern city of Jenin. The Palestinian health ministry identified them as Sufyan Fakhoury, 26, Ahmed Fashafsha, 22, and Nayef Malaysha, 25, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

This attack comes a day after the United Nations urged Israel and Palestine to "immediately" end violence. In a statement, UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland said on Wednesday, "We are in the midst of a cycle of violence that must be stopped immediately."

"The Security Council has spoken with one voice, calling on the parties to observe calm and restraint, and to refrain from provocative actions, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric," Wennesland added.&nbsp;

Austin didn't elaborate on when exactly would there be an increase in the rotations or number of troops, ships or aircraft that will be involved in the rotation.

As tensions continue to escalate between China and Taiwan, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Tuesday (November 22) urged Beijing to avoid actions that could be "destabilising" toward Taipei.&nbsp;

During his face-to-face meeting with Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe, Austin emphasised the need for better communication during a crisis.&nbsp;

A statement from US officials after the meeting revealed that Austin also raised concerns about "increasingly dangerous" behaviour by the Chinese military in the Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;

Tensions escalated after Pelosi's trip to Taiwan, the self-governed democratic island which Beijing claims as its territory. The visit also jeopardised Sino-US relations as in response, China staged massive military exercises.&nbsp;

The mention of Chinese aircraft appears to be related to an incident in June when Australia's defence department said that a Chinese fighter aircraft dangerously intercepted an Australian military surveillance plane in the South China Sea region in May.&nbsp;
