<p>The apparent cover-up of Austin’s hospitalisation has led Republican lawmakers to criticise Democrat Biden’s administration and have since demanded an explanation.</p>

<p>Top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Roger Wicker, accused the Pentagon of failing to inform Congress immediately about such matters and said that the incident further eroded the public’s trust in the Biden administration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also cited past failures of the current administration to quickly disclose information about national security incidents, including the appearance of a Chinese spy balloon over the US last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“When one of the country's two National Command Authorities is unable to perform their duties, military families, Members of Congress, and the American public deserve to know the full extent of the circumstances,” said Wicker in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Pentagon Press Association which comprises of journalists who cover the Defense Department, in a statement expressed “significant concerns” over the apparent cover-up, saying that Austin was a public figure who had no claim to medical privacy in such a situation.</p>

<p>Blinken said a halt to US aid for Ukraine could encourage other countries to follow suit. "This is an instance where we've seen very significant burden-sharing that would almost certainly go away if we go away," he said.</p>

<p>"The message it would send... to each and every one of these countries is that the United States is abandoning ship -- well, we may as well do, too," the secretary of state added.</p>

<p>Israel's retaliatory offensive following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7 has killed more than 8,500 people in the Gaza Strip. On the Israeli side, over 1,400 people have been killed by Hamas.</p>

<p>Antony Blinken also said on Tuesday the Palestinian Authority should retake control of the Gaza Strip from Hamas, with international players potentially filling a role in the interim.</p>

The extreme measure is unlikely to become a law, especially when Democratic Party controls US Senate. Democrats in the House dismissed Republican move as just a political stunt.</p>

<p>The House Republicans approved similar proposals targetting defence officials as part of debate on fiscal 2024 defence appropriations bill. Officials who have drawn ire of Republicans for range of reasons were target of the salary-cut proposals.</p>

<p>Pentagon's director of diversity and inclusion, head of the department's equity and inclusion office, US military's chief diversity officer, and assistant secretary of defense for readiness (a transgender woman) were target of these measures.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, Republicans lashed out at Austin on the floor of the house. They criticised him for US troops' chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.</p>

<p>“Many Americans agree: We do not want the United States’ military led by failure, causing us to be weak,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, Republican Representative from Georgia. She was the sponsor of Austin salary provision.</p>

<p>“We need to pass this amendment,” she said.</p>

<p>There was also a proposal to cut Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley's salary to USD 1. The proposal was floated by Paul Gosar, Republican Representative from Arizona. However, the proposal was dismissed by party leaders before Wednesday's debate.</p>

<p>The proposal of Austin's salary cut, floated by Green, was approved by a voice vote. The Democrats did not press for a roll-call vote.</p>

<p>"You may disagree with the administration’s policies, as we all have done over the years with different administrations. But Secretary Austin has done nothing to merit this,” said Democrat Representative Betty McCollumn from Minnesota.</p>

<p>“There’s no need for us to make such a personal, drastic attack by eliminating his pay.”</p>

The US is India's third-largest arms supplier with an 11 per cent share, below France's 29 per cent.</p>
