Britain`s three current Formula One drivers, led by seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, joined leading sports bodies on Friday in a growing boycott of social media to protest online abuse. 
 
The soccer-led campaign has gathered momentum, spreading from clubs and leagues to national and international bodies in tennis, cricket, rugby and cycling. 
 
European soccer body UEFA has said it will stay silent across its platforms over the weekend, starting at 1500 BST (1600 CEST) on Friday. 
 
"To stand in solidarity with the football community, I will be going dark on my social media channels this weekend," said Hamilton, Formula One`s only Black driver, on Instagram where he has 22 million followers. 
 
"There is no place in our society for any kind of abuse, online or not, and for too long it`s been easy for a small few to post hate from behind their screens. 
 
"While a boycott might not solve this issue overnight, we have to call for change when needed, even when it seems like an almost impossible task," added the Mercedes driver, who is racing in Portugal this weekend. 
 
McLaren`s Lando Norris, who has suffered abuse from online trolls and has a million followers on Twitter, said he was also supporting the boycott. 
 
"Everyone struggles with abuse on here at some point and social media companies need to do more to tackle it," said the 21-year-old. "Hiding behind a keyboard is not okay. Enough is enough." 
 
McLaren said the team was not planning to do a blackout, however. 
 
"We think it`s very important for us over the course of a race weekend to have this positive engagement with our fans," team principal Andreas Seidl told reporters on a video call from Portimao. 
 
Williams` George Russell, 23, said it was time to make a change. 
 
"There is far too much online abuse, hatred, negativity, racism that is just undeserved," he said. "I thought it`s our duty to raise as much awareness as possible, not just in sport."

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton says the conviction of a white former police officer for the killing of George Floyd "marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice".

But the British racing driver warned it was just "one step" on the path towards a more equal society.

Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering African-American Floyd following a racially charged trial.

The 19-year veteran of the Minneapolis police force was seen on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes as he lay face down and handcuffed on the ground saying repeatedly "I can't breathe" in an incident last May.

Hamilton, who said he had been left furious by Floyd's death, last year equalled Michael Schumacher's record of seven world championships against the backdrop of his personal fight against racism.

The 36-year-old, the sole black driver on the F1 grid, wrote on Instagram: "JUSTICE for George! The emotions I feel right now are hard to describe. Derek Chauvin has been found guilty.&nbsp;

"This is the first time that a white officer has been convicted for killing a black man in Minnesota. This is monumental, George's death is not in vain.

"The result of the Derek Chauvin trial today is the right one. Convicting him of all three charges marks a new dawn in the fight for racial justice."

Hamilton, who continues to kneel ahead of races in a sign of his support for the campaign against racial injustice, said much work still needed to be done.

"This is just one step on the path towards a more equal society," he said. "Since George's death, so many other black people have died at the hands of the police and we must ensure the momentum of today continues. The fight isn't over."

Hamilton is top of the drivers' standings ahead of the third race of the season in Portugal on May 2.

Lewis Hamilton claimed his 99th career pole position in qualifying Saturday for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez starting alongside the seven-time world champion's Mercedes at Imola.

Max Verstappen, runner-up to Hamilton at the season-opening race in Bahrain last month, will begin third on the grid in the other Red Bull as the top three were separated by less than one-tenth of a second.

"The day's been great obviously," said Hamilton. "I definitely didn't expect us to be ahead of the two Red Bulls. They've been so quick this weekend.

"There were times when they were six-tenths ahead and we didn't really know where we'd be. But the car was already feeling a lot better from the beginning this weekend."

"I knew going into qualifying and especially that last lap, it was going to take something special," he added.&nbsp;

"It really had to be the most perfect lap and a little bit more to beat the Red Bulls because they really have been so fast all weekend. And I didn't honestly know whether we could do it."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified in fourth ahead of Pierre Gasly, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, who was heading for second but had his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas could only manage eighth, with Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10.&nbsp;

Carlos Sainz failed to make it to Q3 and will start in 11th position in the second Ferrari.

Two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso was a disappointing 15th, six places behind Alpine team-mate Ocon.

Hamilton edged out Perez by 0.035 seconds, the Mexican in turn sneaking ahead of Verstappen by 0.052sec in just his second race with his new team.

"I didn't expect to be here but I should have been on pole - I did a mistake on my final corner, but tomorrow is what matters," said Perez, after securing his best qualifying position to date ahead of a 193rd Grand Prix start.

Verstappen admitted he paid for his mistake.

"Not so good in Q3. I went off at Turn Three, so a bit messy, not a good lap," he said.

"You can't be good every time, so we'll see what went wrong. It's still P3, which is a good starting position."

Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda, who impressed by coming ninth on his F1 debut in Bahrain, planted his Alpha Tauri into the wall coming out of a chicane in Q1 and will set off from the back on Sunday.

"First of all, the body feels OK - no issues," said the 20-year-old Tsunoda.

"Just pushing too much in entry. I had massive instability in entry, massive slap and couldn't control that car and just spun into the barrier.&nbsp;

"The car was amazing and it was just a huge mistake. Really sorry for the team, and I'm just going to have to come back tomorrow."

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff said "track limits won the race for us" on Sunday after Lewis Hamilton claimed a sensational season-opening victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Wolff praised his team for their strategy to help set up a sublime triumphant drive from the defending seven-time world champion – but gave credit to a set of white lines at Turn Four.

It was there, with three laps remaining, that Max Verstappen ran beyond track limits as he passed Hamilton to take the lead, but on the instructions of the race director had to hand back the place immediately. &nbsp;

Hamilton held the lead and did not give Verstappen another chance as the pair provided a thrilling finale with the champion winning by seven-tenths of a second.

"Max made a tiny mistake there and he had to give the position back," said Wolff. "We were told suddenly during the race that track limits were imposed – and that is what won us the race today.

Hamilton agreed.

"If he (Verstappen) hadn't made a mistake he would have won the race," said the winner. "I had to really keep my head and mind set in the car and to make no mistakes."

"What a difficult race that was," added Hamilton. "Max was all over me right at the end, but I just about managed to hold him off. It was one of the hardest races I have had in a while."&nbsp;

"It was such a great fight, but this is not the end for them. They will hit back with a vengeance in the next race."

Wolff said Red Bull looked strong.

"For the first race, I think these guys are a tiny bit ahead of us.

"It was a great battle of strategies," Wolff said.

"We took a very bold move pitting so early with Lewis and we gained a position, but then we thought we are doing the same again to prevent the under-cut."

White lines saved Hamilton, says Mercedes boss

Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday he has been "educating" himself and has "taken steps in private to raise issues" over allegations of human rights abuses in countries where the Formula One circus operates, including this weekend's season-opener in Bahrain.

The 36-year-old seven-time world champion led anti-racism protests on the grid last season, regularly taking a knee before the start of each race.

However, as the new Formula One season kicks off, calls have been made by a coalition of 22 human rights groups for the sport to carry out an independent inquiry into allegations of abuses associated with the Bahrain Grand Prix.&nbsp;

A letter sent to F1 chiefs cites, for example, claims that an 11-year-old boy was arrested for joining protests against last season's race in the Gulf kingdom.

The Guardian newspaper said Hamilton as well as F1's new chief executive, Stefano Domenicali had both received copies of the letter.

Hamilton on Thursday referred to receiving letters from human rights campaigners and alleged victims of torture in Bahrain – asking him to speak out on their behalf.&nbsp;

He has raised questions about the inclusion of a Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on this year's record 23-race calendar.

"It's the first time I received letters like that, so I've taken the last few months to try and educate myself -- because coming here all these years I wasn't aware of all of the details of human rights issues," said Hamilton at a pre-season news conference.

He added he had spoken to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, and taken steps in private to raise the issues.&nbsp;

"I don't want to say too much that may jeopardise any progress," he added.&nbsp;

"But I am definitely committed to helping in any way I can."

He said human rights should not be treated as a political issue.&nbsp;

"I don't think that we should be going to these countries and just ignoring what is happening -- and arriving, having a great time, and then leave."

<h2>- 'Zero tolerance' -</h2>

However, the Bahrain government later Thursday hit back, claiming they have a "zero-tolerance policy towards mistreatment of any kind".

"A range of institutional and legal reforms have been implemented in close collaboration with international governments and independent experts," said a government spokesperson.

"(These include) the establishment of a wholly independent Ombudsman – the first of its kind in the region – which will fully and independently investigate any allegation of mistreatment."

They added: "Furthermore, the National Institute for Human Rights – created with the assistance of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – has independent oversight of promoting and protecting human rights within the kingdom."

Meanwhile, Hamilton said he plans to continue taking a knee this year, hoping it will provoke an uncomfortable conversation about equality and send a signal that he is listening to and representing the black community.

"I can't ignore the fact that last year weighed heavily on me," he said.&nbsp;

"As I get older, I am understanding more. I think we all went through an educational phase last year and we're all learning more."

"I plan to continue to take the knee because I think what's really important is when young children are watching what we're doing here in this sport and when they see us take the knee, they will sit and ask their parents or their teachers 'why are they doing that? What are they taking the knee for?'."

Hamilton 'educates' himself as Bahrain GP under fire over alleged rights abuses

The Mercedes Formula One team despite seven successive constructors titles possesses the "same fire, hunger and passion" says team principal Toto Wolff as when he arrived in 2013.

The 49-year-old Austrian's remarks came as the team launched its car for the 2021 season, one which they hope will culminate in Lewis Hamilton winning a record eighth drivers' title.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance builds on the solid base of its predecessor but includes considerable aerodynamic changes alongside improvements to areas as such as the suspension, cooling system and Power Unit.

It will be seen on the track for the first time in pre-season testing in Bahrain on March 12.

Bahrain kicks off the season with their Grand Prix on March 28.

Wolff says the dominance of Mercedes is not damaging to the sport as there are plenty of 'sub plots' surrounding other drivers such as Jos Verstappen.

However, he says Mercedes are not going to be caught napping by lowering their standards for their drive remains as strong as ever.

"Every year we reset our focus and define the right objectives," said&nbsp;Wolff in a Mercedes statement to mark the launch of the new car.

"That may sound simple but it's damn hard and is probably why there are no sports teams out there with seven consecutive titles.

"So many things can happen and it's very natural to get used to success, and therefore not fight as hard for it.

"But this team has not shown any of that."

Wolff said Hamilton and Finnish team-mate Valtteri Bottas as well as the rest of the staff always have new challenges which keeps them motivated.

"I see the same fire, hunger and passion now as I did the first time I walked through the doors in 2013," he said.

"Every season presents a new challenge and therefore, a new goal for us to achieve.

"2021 brings changes to the regulations, which could impact our competitiveness, plus the cost cap and working on the major rule changes of 2022.

"These challenges excite us."

One of Hamilton's crusades has been to promote and develop more diversity in the sport.

As a result the black base livery remains for a second season "to underline the team's commitment to improving diversity and inclusion within the team and our sport".

Wolff said the team had set itself targets to back up its words with actions.

"We've set ourselves the goal of at least 25 percent of all new starters coming from under-represented groups for the next five years," he said.

"The latest step is a joint foundation that we will create together with Lewis to improve all aspects of diversity in motorsport.

"All of these measures are encouraging, but we know that real change takes time and we're at the start of a very long journey.

"So, this topic will very much remain in our focus for years to come as we build on the foundations we've laid over the past few months."

"So, this topic will very much remain in our focus for years to come as we build on the foundations we've laid over the past few months."

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton is hoping to have his future sorted by Christmas now that the Formula One season is over.

The most successful driver in the history of the sport and his Mercedes team, winner of both titles for an unprecedented seventh year in succession, still have to sit down and put pen to paper.

Hamilton is otherwise out of contract in a few weeks’ time.

The issue, even if it looks a foregone conclusion, is the biggest question of several remaining to be answered around the paddock.

“I plan to be here next year. I want to be here next year,” said Hamilton, 35, after finishing third in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi finale.

“Us, as a team, have more to do together and more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think. I hope we can begin discussions this week and hopefully get it tied up before Christmas.”

The Briton had put off talks while he focused on the championship and then COVID-19 got in the way, with Hamilton testing positive in Bahrain and going into 10 days of quarantine.

Team boss Toto Wolff said there was no concern.

“It is going to happen. There is no reason it shouldn’t happen now,” he told reporters.

“We’ll have this conversation. We always said that we will do it after the title was won and then the virus delayed us for another 10 days, two weeks and now we just have to sit down, maybe virtually or maybe live.”

Championship runners-up Red Bull must decide who is going to partner Sunday’s race winner Max Verstappen next season with Thai racer Alexander Albon the incumbent but Mexican Sergio Perez in the frame.

Team boss Christian Horner said Albon’s performance in Abu Dhabi was probably his “strongest collective weekend of the season.

“That now gives us a complete set of information to go away and analyse and work out what we are going to do. It’s not going to take too long,” he added.

Williams’s new U.S.-based owners Dorilton Capital have to decide the team’s leadership structure after ending the season under acting principal Simon Roberts.

“We’re working on that right now but I can’t say anything about it this weekend,” Roberts said in Abu Dhabi. “Lots of discussion with Dorilton and when we’re ready we’ll be able to announce how we intend to move forward.”

Ferrari are meanwhile looking for a replacement for CEO Louis Camilleri after he announced his sudden retirement last week for personal reasons.

Mercedes on Wednesday announced that seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who tested positive for COVID-19, will be replaced by George Russell of Williams at Formula One’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.

Williams reserve Jack Aitken is set to replace Russell at Williams this weekend and will join Nicholas Latifi. Hence, Russell will become just the third Briton to represent Mercedes in Formula One after Stirling Moss and Lewis Hamilton.

The sport’s most successful driver of all time, with a record 95 wins and 98 pole positions, said on social media that he had tested negative three times in the past week but woke up on Monday with mild symptoms.

The Briton said he then requested another test which came back positive and he immediately started a 10-day self-isolation, ruling out the Sakhir Grand Prix and raising doubts about the Abu Dhabi finale on the following weekend.

“I’m gutted not to be able to race this weekend but my priority is to follow the protocols and advice to protect others,” he said.

“I’m really lucky that I feel OK with only mild symptoms and will do my best to stay fit and healthy.”

Hamilton said he and his team had taken all possible precautions and followed all regulations to stay safe since the season started.

Mercedes said he tested negative at the circuit on Sunday afternoon but he had been informed on Monday that “a contact prior to arrival in Bahrain had subsequently tested positive.”

The Briton wrapped up his record-equalling seventh title in Turkey last month and picked up his 11th win of the season in Bahrain on Sunday.

Mercedes have already won the constructors’ title for an unprecedented seventh year in a row.

Hamilton will not now be able to match the record for the most wins in a single season. Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel share that mark with 13.

Hamilton was also on a record run of 48 successive points finishes and has started 265 races in a row.

However, he woke up on Monday morning with mild symptoms and was informed at the same time that a contact prior to arrival in Bahrain had subsequently tested positive. Lewis therefore took a further test and returned a positive result. This has since been confirmed by a retest.

Lewis is now isolating in accordance with COVID-19 protocols and public health authority guidelines. Apart from mild symptoms, he is otherwise fit and well, and the entire team sends him our very best wishes for a swift recovery.&nbsp;

The Italian company wants to introduce a tyre for next season that is stronger, featuring the same compound but different construction.

“Every time you propose a new tyre, there are some criticisms, there is a change in balance,” said Pirelli’s F1 boss Mario Isola.

“I’m sure they (the teams) will find a way to balance the car and extract performance from the 2021 tyres.”

Friday practice in Bahrain was the second time teams and drivers have had a chance to evaluate prototypes of the new tyres having also run different versions of them during practice for last month's Portuguese Grand Prix at the Portimao track.

Hamilton, who said the new tyres were three kilos heavier and a second a lap slower, was equally unimpressed after running them at Portimao.

His Ferrari rival and four time champion Sebastian Vettel echoed his comments.

"They were not a step forward," said the German after Bahrain practice. "Probably worth a shot, but I hope we don't see these tyres again.

"If that one is the only option for 2021, then absolutely, I would love to stick with the 2019 tyres."

Lewis Hamilton revealed on Thursday that he feels he has not yet processed the impact of his achievement in claiming a record-equalling seventh title to become F1’s most successful driver.

The 35-year-old Mercedes driver pulled level with Michael Schumacher when he secured his seventh title and his sixth in seven years with a momentous win at the Turkish Grand Prix two weeks ago.

He said, however, that he felt just as fired up to win the three season-ending races in the Middle East after ‘switching off’ and relaxing since that triumph. &nbsp;

“It's in my DNA,” he told reporters. “It's how I’m wired. I just love that challenge. We're coming into three races where the pressure is different, but the focus is too.

“It's about getting the best performances out of these weekends, but it's also how can we extract a little bit more?

“How can we learn more from these weekends, almost using them as test races, so that we can apply what we learn in these three particularly, and what we've learned this year, into next year's car?”

Hamilton said he had used the respite from constant pressure to allow him to re-charge for the final races.“I've generally just switched off,” he said.

“It's been really bad in the sense that I've got a lot of messages and I'm trying to catch up now.”

He also revealed that ‘the dream’ of racing for Ferrari “just wasn’t meant to be”.

Hamilton admitted he spoke to Ferrari president John Elkann last year, but never felt he was ready to leave Mercedes with whom he is expected to re-sign for the future before the end of this season.

“I was never close at all to leaving my team," he said. "I think it's only right that as drivers and as people when you're looking at your next phases and committing to periods of time in your life, you have to analyse what your options are -- and make sure you have done your due diligence and have the pros and cons.

“I don't necessarily know that our values are aligned and timing-wise, it just wasn't meant to be. I'm not bothered by it. I'm so proud and grateful for the journey that I have with Mercedes.”

Hamilton also pointed out that his points advantage ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas in this year’s title race had been exaggerated by the Finn’s bad luck.

He said Bottas had become stronger each year. "You've seen this year that while yes, the points gap now is where it is, if you look at a lot of the qualifying, it was the smallest of margins.

“So closing the gap in qualifying, he has done already, which has made it quite challenging… If you look at race weekends, it has been so close. Valtteri has been unfortunate this year with reliability issues so that makes the gap look bigger than it is.”

Hamilton added: “I think you've got to remember who he's driving up against – it's not easy being my team-mate, but he comes in weekend in, weekend out, with just the same mentality.

"Lewis can really be the best of the best and everybody will say that for years and years, or maybe decades, or whatever," he told the F1 Nation podcast.

"So, I think he is just preparing his two or three-year contract, which I think he deserves.

"What he is doing... He shows that he definitely deserves it –- to be different to all of the other drivers in terms of everything and even in terms of salary."

Hamilton departed the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola earlier this month with an enigmatic suggestion, after his record-increasing 93rd win had secured Mercedes' unparalleled seventh consecutive constructors' championship, that he may not return to racing in 2021.

"For sure, Michael helped many other drivers to increase their salary. That's what Lewis is, in my view, trying to do. I think he is 'doing right' and he deserves it."

Even if he wins on Sunday at the Istanbul Park Circuit, returning to the calendar for the first time since 2011, Hamilton can still take the title by finishing second and clocking the fastest lap.

With the title race reduced to a duel between the two 'silver arrows' drivers, many other teams have turned already to plans for next season – Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto deciding to stay in Italy to concentrate on car development.

Sporting director Laurent Mekies will take charge, but maintain close contact with Binotto, missing his first race since taking over last year.

Verstappen ended up puncturing his right-read and 10 laps later smashed the suspension that sent him spinning into the gravel as Bottas regained his second-spot.
