AI to be named 'species' in law books? Credible call made by legal experts

<p>Japan's Supreme Court on Wednesday (Oct 25) in a landmark decision quashed a law that mandated sterilisation&nbsp;surgery to officially allow a gender change for a person on a family registry, media reports said.</p>

<p>Deeming the law "unconstitutional" the court's 15-judge bench gave the ruling in contrast to an earlier ruling in 2019 which had said that these requirements are "currently constitutional."</p>

<p>The case was brought on by an unidentified transgender woman below the age of 50 whose lawyers said that the mandates are in breach of their client’s constitutional right to lead a life without discrimination.</p>

<p>Israel's Supreme Court said Wednesday that it will not block the controversial judicial law passed by the country's Parliament by issuing an injunction, media reports said.&nbsp;This comes a day after the Israeli parliament passed the controversial judicial law which has cut down the powers of the apex court to block the government decisions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court said that it would take up the debate over the controversial legislation in September.&nbsp;Currently, several petitions are in the Supreme Court which seeks to gid rid of the law. One of the groups that have filed the petition includes the Israeli Bar Association.</p>

Sweden considering amending the law to prevent burning of Quran in public

<p>The government of Canada will not purchase advertisements on Facebook and Instagram as it faces a dispute over a new law on payment to online news publishers which has been opposed by the Meta-owned platforms, said Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Last month, the Online News Act, or Bill C-18, was passed, which triggered Meta and Alphabet's Google to claim that they would stop providing access to news on their platforms in Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rules are being finalised by the government which requires the platforms to share some advertising revenue when the law gets implemented by the end of the year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Canada is going to continue to stand firm and ensure that if social media platforms and internet giants want to use media, that they actually ensure that they're paying their fair share for it," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Monteregie, Quebec.</p>

<h2><strong>Tighter regulations on internet giants</strong></h2>

<p>The government drafted the legislation after receiving calls from the media industry of Canada for the need for tighter regulations on internet giants to help news businesses recoup financial losses which they have suffered in the years as Google and Facebook continued to gain a greater share of the online advertising market.</p>

<p>Rodriguez said that 80 per cent of the revenue generated from advertisements in Canada, which was worth $7.5 billion in 2022, went to Google and Facebook, and the Liberal government wanted that the two social media platforms contribute to domestic journalism.</p>

<p>He added that the decision to suspend the government advertisements can cost Facebook and Instagram around $7.5 billion per year, he said.</p>

<p>Facebook "refused to discuss and they did not want to compensate the media accordingly and so we've decided to suspend advertising," Rodriguez stated while speaking alongside two of three Canadian opposition parties, which also have been supporting the legislation.</p>

<p>“Platforms benefit from the status quo. They benefit from the fact that there’s currently nothing forcing them to contribute to our Canadian news system. That status quo isn’t working. All we want, all Canadians want, is for these platforms to contribute their fair share," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sounding hopeful about reaching a compromise with Google, Rodriguez said that the government was convinced that "what Google is asking at this moment can be done."</p>

China passes new foreign policy law broadening Xi Jinping's powers to counter US

China has passed its first foreign relations law in an effort to counter Western sanctions. Beijing claims that this law will serve as a deterrent to sanctions and safeguard its national sovereignty and security. The law was passed at a time when China and the US are embroiled in a dispute over the sanctions. The new law is scheduled to take effect on July 1st.

<p>German Parliament on Friday (June 23) passed a reform to immigration law&nbsp;aimed at encouraging non-EU jobseekers to seek jobs in Germany.</p>

<p>"This draft law secures prosperity in Germany," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) as quoted by German news outlet DW. She presented the reforms in the parliament. She said that the reform would only work if bureaucratic hurdles were dismantled while implementing it.</p>

<p>"It's unacceptable that you have to fill in 17 different applications to bring a new care worker into the country," she said.</p>

<p>The opposition parties had some objections, though they welcomed some of the government's ideas. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) criticised the government's plans to lower qualification hurdles for foreign workers. Andrea Lindholz of the CSU said plans to lower the required German language skills would encourage low-skilled workers.</p>

<p>Lindholz argued that reforms do nothing to tackle what she described as the main problem: Bureaucratic bottlenecks.</p>

<p>She added that plans to provide opportunities for asylum seekers who were already inside Germany had a risk of "turning the asylum process into a kind of state-financed job-seeking opportunity in Germany".</p>

<h2><strong>Far-right complains</strong></h2>

<p>&nbsp;Alternative for Germany (AfD), the far-right party, opposed the reforms vehemently.</p>

<p>"What you have put together in a 100-page draft law could be summed up in one sentence," said Norbert Kleinwachter "Everyone gets in, but no one gets thrown out."</p>

<p>Kleinwachter was quoted by DW.</p>

<p>Green Party's Lamya Kaddor rejected AfD's assertions. She said that speaking German was not the most important prerequisite to working in Germany.</p>

<p>"You integrate best when you have to speak German at work — ever noticed?" she asked sarcastically.</p>

<p>"This is finally, finally, really good news for this country. In the competition with other successful countries of immigration like the US or Canada, we have made some crucial steps forward," she said.</p>

<p>The Free Democratic Party (FDP) which is part of the German government's three-party coalition, supported the law.</p>

<p>"It's ridiculous that it's easier in Germany today to emigrate into the asylum system than the job market," said the FDP's Konstantin Kuhle. "We're turning that around with this law."</p>

She presented the reforms in the parliament. She said that the reform would only work if bureaucratic hurdles were dismantled while implementing it. "It's unacceptable that you have to fill in 17 different applications to bring a new care worker into the country," she said. The opposition parties had some objections, though they welcomed some of the government's ideas. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) criticised the government's plans to lower qualification hurdles for foreign workers. Andrea Lindholz of the CSU said plans to lower the required German language skills would encourage low-skilled workers. Lindholz argued that reforms do nothing to tackle what she described as the main problem: Bureaucratic bottlenecks. She added that plans to provide opportunities for asylum seekers who were already inside Germany had a risk of "turning the asylum process into a kind of state-financed job-seeking opportunity in Germany". Far-right complains Alternative for Germany (AfD), the far-right party, opposed the reforms vehemently. "What you have put together in a 100-page draft law could be summed up in one sentence," said Norbert Kleinwachter "Everyone gets in, but no one gets thrown out." Kleinwachter was quoted by DW. Green Party's Lamya Kaddor rejected AfD's assertions. She said that speaking German was not the most important prerequisite to working in Germany. "You integrate best when you have to speak German at work — ever noticed?" she asked sarcastically. "This is finally, finally, really good news for this country. In the competition with other successful countries of immigration like the US or Canada, we have made some crucial steps forward," she said. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) which is part of the German government's three-party coalition, supported the law. "It's ridiculous that it's easier in Germany today to emigrate into the asylum system than the job market," said the FDP's Konstantin Kuhle. "We're turning that around with this law."
