UK’s Conservative Party is going through its toughest phase under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s watch, as more and more voters turn to the right-wing Reform Party.

A pollster has found that Sunak’s popularity has dipped below that of his short-lived predecessor Liz Truss, who put the embattled party in power the last time.

JL Partners in a ‘deep-dive analysis’ claimed that Sunak’s period had caused ‘an implosion’ within the Conservatives, thus handing over a clear edge to the Labour Party in the January 2025 elections.

According to the analysis by JL Partners, a mere 59 per cent of Conservatives who backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 elections, are throwing their weight behind Sunak.&nbsp;

That’s down from 74 per cent in August and 63 per cent in September last year.

The pollster also claimed that the Tories have lost a whopping 520,000 votes since the prime minister’s speech at the Conservative Party conference at the beginning of October.

<h2>Reform Party gaining traction</h2>

The report revealed that 15 per cent of Conservatives who backed the party in the 2019 elections were now rooting for the Reform Party. This translates into a net loss of 1.5 million votes for the Tories.

It also said that five per cent of 2019 voters turned to the centrist Liberal Democrat party, while 18 per cent have now started backing Labour.

<h2>Sunak’s biggest challenge</h2>

Amongst all, the immigration policy remains Sunak’s biggest challenge as his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda was ruled unlawful by the UK’s top court last month.

UK's ruling Conservatives suffer major setback as Labour win second by-election

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union brought Ford's largest global plant, the Kentucky truck plant, to a halt, disrupting the production of lucrative pickup trucks and large SUVs. This development marks a significant escalation in the UAW's four-week targeted strike against the Detroit Three automakers, as reported by Reuters.&nbsp;

The UAW initiated the strike after the union claimed that Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, refused to make further concessions in contract negotiations. While automakers have offered substantial wage increases, inflation-linked pay hikes, and better compensation for temporary workers, the union's demands persist, including higher wages, the elimination of a two-tier wage system, and extending union representation to battery plants across all three auto giants.&nbsp;

"We had to choose to do things differently this way," Reuters quoted UAW President Shawn Fain as saying. "If the companies aren't going to come to the table and take care of the membership's needs, then we will react," he added.&nbsp;

The Kentucky truck plant is a key area for Ford, generating approximately $25 billion in annual revenue, which constitutes about one-sixth of the company's global automotive revenue. This unexpected strike has the potential to impact Ford's full-year profits adversely. Ford's stock faced a 2 per cent drop in after-hours trading following the announcement.&nbsp;

The UAW requested a new offer from Ford during a meeting held on Wednesday evening, further escalating the tensions. According to a Ford official, the company did not have a new offer ready.&nbsp;

According to Reuters, Ford responded to the strike, describing it as "grossly irresponsible but unsurprising given the union leadership's stated strategy of keeping the Detroit Three wounded for months through 'reputational damage' and 'industrial chaos.'"&nbsp;

The UAW's decision to shut down the assembly lines that manufacture Ford Super Duty pickup trucks and Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition large SUVs, all of which are high-profit vehicles, may potentially undermine the automaker's profitability.&nbsp;

Fain indicated that the union was prepared to strike at the GM assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, which produces Cadillac Escalade and Chevy Suburban, among other high-priced SUVs. The strike is also a warning to Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, whose wage and benefits offers fall short of those offered by Ford.&nbsp;

As negotiations continue, the labour disruption may continue to disrupt production for the automakers and their suppliers, with thousands of workers potentially being furloughed. Reuters reported that the UAW's strategy is keeping the automakers off balance, and it could be "uncharted territory" for both sides, as labour professor Harley Shaiken from the University of California, Berkeley, commented.&nbsp;

Before this recent development, the UAW had refrained from additional strikes against Detroit Three auto plants, citing GM's willingness to allow workers at joint venture battery plants to be covered by union contracts.&nbsp;

As the Detroit automakers prepare to report their third-quarter financial results between October 24 and 31, the UAW may use their expected robust profits as leverage in negotiations for a more favourable contract.&nbsp;

Separately, Ford's battery joint venture with South Korea's SK On, BlueOval SK, announced that it would provide higher wages for some workers at its Tennessee and Kentucky plants, offering a range of $24 to $37.50 per hour based on experience.&nbsp;

Breaking the glass ceiling, however, is not new for Goldin. She was also the first woman to secure a tenured track at Harvard University's prestigious economics department.

But beyond the usual headlines, Goldin's work on women's participation in the labour force across history is pathbreaking - to say the least. &nbsp;

Goldin began her academic journey in the transformative 1970s, at the height of the feminist movement, when the role of women in the economy was rapidly changing.

In her 1998 essay "The Economist as Detective", she recalls how her lifelong passion, which ultimately awarded her the Economics Nobel, began: "Women were in the data when young and single and often when widowed. But their stories were faintly heard after they married, for they were often not producing goods and services."

As her doctoral guide, University of Chicago's Robert Fogel played a key role in Goldin's early academic career. The 1993 winner of the Economics Nobel was instrumental in drawing her into the field of economic history.

Goldin's 1995 paper, "Cliometrics and the Nobel", is a tribute to Fogel as well as a chronicle of economic history. "They (Fogel &amp; North - the co-winner) are distinctive, because for them economic history is not a handmaiden of economics but a distinct field of scholarship," Goldin wrote arguing that Fogel formalised economic history "in a manner similar to the injection of mathematical models and statistics into the rest of economics".

But what makes Goldin's work special is her ability to see labour and gender through the prism of economic history. In doing so, Goldin has given the world, what the Nobel Prize Committee rightly states, "the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries".

While it is difficult to sum up Goldin's work in a few paragraphs, three of her research papers give us enough insights into her work.

Perhaps, the Harvard professor's most famous research paper is "The power of the pill", which traces the influence of contraceptives on women's work life. The paper argues that "the pill" granted reproductive autonomy to women, boosting their educational and career freedoms.

Another important work, "The quiet revolution", postulates how women have increasingly committed themselves to higher education and professional careers by delaying marriage and motherhood. The study also notes how more and more women entered the fields of medicine, law and management from 1970s onward, while the number of women teachers, librarians and nurses began to fell.

But her most consequential research has been on gender pay gap. Her 2014 paper, "A Grand Gender Convergence: Its Last Chapter", talks about how the gender wage gap is less about human capital differences but more about labor market rewarding long work hours and penalising flexibility.

UK's opposition Labour on course for landslide election victory, poll predicts

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said&nbsp;that a major rewrite of the Brexit deal will be pursued with the EU if the party gets elected, citing the responsibility he has towards his children and future generations. 
 
While unveiling the blueprint for power if the next general elections are won by the party, the Labour Party leader told the Financial Times he plans to seek a closer trading relationship with Brussels when the Brexit agreement, which was negotiated by then-prime minister Boris Johnson, is reviewed in 2025. 
 
“Almost everyone recognises the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal – it’s far too thin. As we go into 2025 we will attempt to get a much better deal for the UK,” said Starmer.

The trip was a part of Starmer's wider international tour. Last week, he visited The Hague and he is set to visit Paris where he will meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday (September 19). 
 
The Labour leader stated that there is “more that can be achieved across the board” between the EU and the UK in a revised deal, especially in the areas of business, veterinary compliance, professional services, security, innovation and research. The leader also ruled out rejoining the customs union, the EU and the single market.

Moody’s compared India’s current education outcome levels to those of Pakistan and Bangladesh, emphasising that better educational outcomes will help nations like India avoid potential job losses from digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence in the long run, especially in services like call centres and BPOs.

The rating agency stated in a report on sovereigns in South and Southeast Asia titled “Population growth alone will not drive credit benefits for emerging economies” that it anticipates continued population growth in the region to support economic expansion because the proportion of people who are working age will remain high relative to the proportion of people who are younger and older.

“However, the availability and scale of labour inputs alone will not drive materially stronger economic strength or better fiscal outcomes. Other conditions such as strong education and quality infrastructure are also key to reaping the benefits,” The Hindu quoted the report as saying.

Moody’s report also mentioned that there exists a significant gap in the quality of education between Pakistan, Bangladesh and India in comparison to China and other countries in South East Asia. This leads to labour force “participation imbalances.”

The organization predicts that, the population of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Vietnam are to grow by a third, thereby leading to a 40 per cent of the increase in people in working age, over the next 20 years.

According to Moody’s, differences in the proportion of the male and female populations who have completed upper secondary education are most prominent in India and Bangladesh. It is believed that variations in the total mean years of education reflect gender disparities in educational success.

“The development of relevant engineering and programming expertise may actually provide employment opportunities, not only in technology-related fields, but also in higher-value-added manufacturing given the increasingly complex products being produced in some of these large countries, for example, smartphones in India and electric vehicles in Vietnam,” the report stated.

“The high participation of women in the workforce in China is a combination of its socialist legacy and subsequent economic reforms and opening up after Mao Zedong's (Chinese communist leader and founder of the People's Republic of China) passing. The high level of investment by the state in human capital, education and health is one of the key achievements of Mao era (1949-78). It also emerged from the socialist understanding that both men and women had to participate in labour - starting from agricultural production,” Dr Anand P. Krishnan, Fellow, Centre for Himalayan Studies, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi NCR, and Visiting Associate Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies in Delhi told WION.

Following initiatives to protect women's rights, including the marriage law passed after the People's Republic's establishment, Chinese women have enjoyed increased mobility and opportunities. This trend continued with economic reforms since the 1980s, leading to more women pursuing higher education and careers. Declining urban birth rates reduced childcare responsibilities, allowing women to delay starting families. Marriage rates have fallen as women prioritise careers, leading to a rise in female CEOs and a strong presence in retail and service industries. They are also increasing moving to heavy labour intensive sectors - like women constitute nearly 14-16 per cent of all construction workers, explains Dr Krishnan.

This comes after reports emerged, earlier this month, that the retail giant might lay off at least 10,000 employees from its workforce across the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Citing people with knowledge on the matter, HT reported that the probe will examine “whether the exits were voluntary and if the terms of services, which includes severance and notice period, were adhered to.” The retail giant is set to lay off at least 10,000 employees by next year, said multiple media reports. Subsequently, the ministry sent a notice to Amazon India last week after it received complaints of mass layoffs which are in violation of India’s labour laws.&nbsp;

The complaints were made by the Nascent Information Technology Employees’ Senate (NITES), a group of over 18,000 members of IT professionals in India, to the Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Bhupender Yadav. However, officials at Amazon India said that the employees have not been fired but the people have opted for the company’s “voluntary separation programme”.&nbsp;

The report citing the ministry official, requesting anonymity also said, “In its response, the company said that they had expected to make more money through their business, but owing to financial expedience, they floated a voluntary exit programme. They said there were no forced layoffs.”&nbsp;

When questioned about the government intervention in the workings of a private company, the official said that their ministry’s aim is to ensure labour laws in the country are not violated. “We will ensure that the aggrieved workers are heard, and their rights are protected. First reported by the New York Times on November 15, Amazon is planning to lay off at least 10,000 employees in their corporate and technology departments, making it the biggest layoff in company history. After the stunning victory at Amazon by a little-known independent union that didn’t exist 18 months ago, organized labour has begun to ask itself an increasingly pressing question: Does the labour movement need to get more&nbsp;disorganized?

Unlike traditional unions, the Amazon Labor Union relied almost entirely on current and former workers rather than professional organizers in its campaign at a warehouse on Staten Island in New York City. For financing, it turned to GoFundMe appeals rather than union coffers built from the dues of existing members. It spread the word in a break room and at low-key barbecues outside the warehouse.

In the end, the approach succeeded where far bigger, wealthier and more established unions have repeatedly fallen short.

“It’s sending a wake-up call to the rest of the labour movement,” said Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union. “We have to be homegrown — we have to be driven by workers — to give ourselves the best chance.”

The success at Amazon comes on the heels of worker-driven initiatives in a variety of other industries. In 2018, rank-and-file public school teachers in states like West Virginia and Arizona used social media to plan a series of walkouts, setting in motion one of the largest labour actions in recent decades and forcing union leaders to embrace their tactics.

White-collar tech workers have organized protests at Google and Netflix over issues like sexual harassment and prejudice toward transgender people. At colleges like Grinnell and Dartmouth, workers have recently formed unions that are unaffiliated with existing labour groups.

And at Starbucks, where workers have voted to unionize 10 corporate-owned stores and filed for elections in roughly 150 more over the past six months, the campaign has largely expanded through worker-to-worker interactions over email, text and Zoom, even as it is being overseen by Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union.

Nonunion Starbucks employees typically receive advice from their newly unionized counterparts, then meet with co-workers in their stores, distribute union cards, decide whether and when to file for an election and respond to media inquiries — responsibilities that professional union staff members often carry out in traditional campaigns.

“I can give my opinions — experience means something, but living it means more,” said Richard Bensinger, an organizer for Workers United, referring to the difference between organizing as an outsider and working at a company.

Some union officials have criticized the labour movement for being content to shrink gradually, like a wheezing media giant ill suited for the internet age, rather than experiment with new models and invest aggressively in recruitment. They have pointed to a decline in funding for an AFL-CIO department dedicated to organizing, although the federation’s president, Liz Shuler, has said organizing remains a priority and is funded through different mechanisms.

Other activists and scholars have complained that even when established unions do invest in organizing, some are too intent on controlling key decisions and use workers merely as props who recite union-crafted talking points.

In her book “No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age,” organizer and scholar Jane McAlevey wrote sceptically of two common approaches of established unions. One is “advocacy,” in which union officials try to hammer out deals with corporate executives or political power brokers to allow workers to unionize, but with little input from workers.

McAlevey also questioned an approach she called “mobilization,” in which the union takes on an employer primarily through the efforts of a professional staff, consultants and a cadre of activists rather than a large group of rank-and-file workers. “The staffers see themselves, not ordinary people, as the key agents of change,” she wrote.

Some union officials have argued that the Fight for $15 campaign, in which the service employees’ union has spent tens of millions of dollars seeking to raise wages and help fast-food workers unionize, and OUR Walmart, which had similar goals for Walmart employees, were effectively mobilization efforts run largely by professional operatives.

“They were engaged in a campaign to try to bring to bear a lot of external pressure, with show strikes and community support, to jack up Walmart to deal with them,” said Peter Olney, a former organizing director of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, alluding to protests involving activists but few workers. “My critique is that was not going to happen. Walmart is not going to respond to show strikes. You have to have real strikes.”

Critics typically acknowledge that the campaigns helped galvanize support for higher wages even if they fell short of unionizing workers. Defenders say the goal is to have an effect on a company- or industrywide scale rather than a few individual stores. They point to certain developments, like a pending California bill that would regulate fast-food wages and working conditions, as signs of progress.

In other cases, workers themselves have perceived the limitations of established unions and the advantages of going it alone. Joseph Fink, who works at an Amazon Fresh grocery store in Seattle with roughly 150 employees, said the workers there had reached out to a few unions when seeking to organize in the summer but decided that the unions’ focus on winning recognition through National Labor Relations Board elections would delay resolution of their complaints, which included sexual harassment and health and safety threats.

When the workers floated the idea of staging protests or walkouts as an alternative, union officials responded cautiously. “We received the response that if we were to speak up, assert our rights publicly, we’d be terminated,” Fink said. “It was a self-defeating narrative.”

The workers decided to form a union on their own without the formal blessing of the NLRB, a model known as a “solidarity union,” whose roots precede the modern labour movement.

For workers who seek NLRB certification, doing so independent of an established union also has advantages, such as confounding the talking points of employers and consultants, who often paint unions as “third parties” seeking to hoard workers’ dues.

At Amazon, the strategy was akin to sending a conventional army into battle against guerrillas: Organizers said the talking points had fallen flat once co-workers realized that the union consisted of fellow employees rather than outsiders.

“When a worker comes up to me, they look at me, then see I have a badge on and say, ‘You work here?’ They ask it in the most surprising way,” said Angelika Maldonado, an Amazon employee on Staten Island who heads the union’s workers committee. “‘I’m like, ‘Yeah, I work here.’ It makes us relatable from the beginning.”

In recent years, a variety of groups have sought to make it easier for workers to organize independently. The nonprofit Solidarity Fund has provided stipends to workers involved in organizing campaigns and awarded $2,500 grants to seven Amazon workers on Staten Island last year.

A for-profit company, Unit, provides software allowing workers to track the support of co-workers and file authorization signatures electronically with the NLRB. The company, structured as a public benefit corporation, pairs workers with one of its professional organizers during the most delicate portions of the unionizing process, such as employer anti-union meetings. It recently helped its first group of workers unionize at Piedmont Health Services, a health care provider in North Carolina with roughly 40 eligible employees.

The problem for independent organizing efforts is that their momentum can be hard to sustain, even with such cutting-edge tools, or after securing a win through a strike or an election.

“The organizing never stops,” said Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of labour education research at Cornell University. “You can’t sit back. For a normal first contract campaign, it averages three years. If Amazon contests this in court, this is going to take a lot longer.”

Established unions like the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which came close to winning a do-over election last week at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, and recently notched a victory at outdoor retailer REI, can provide institutional support to see the effort through.

For worker-led unions, such challenges may point to the need for a hybrid approach in which they retain control of their organizations but seek guidance and resources from more established unions — something that is already occurring to varying degrees.

The Amazon workers on Staten Island received pro bono legal help from employees of established unions as well as office space, and the Communications Workers of America lent them a messaging platform capable of sending out texts to co-workers en masse.

At Starbucks, Workers United has paid for extensive legal work, such as litigating the company’s challenges to election petitions. A Buffalo, New York, barista involved in the original campaign is also an organizer paid by Workers United.

The question is whether traditional unions, while ramping up their contributions to these efforts, including opposition research and other public relations strategies, will be able to resist the temptation to seize control from the workers who fueled them.

Dimondstein, who said his Postal Workers union was prepared to contribute resources to the Amazon campaign with no strings attached, advised his fellow union leaders to stand down and play a similar long game.

“We need to make sure this doesn’t break down into jurisdictional fights — who’s getting these types of workers, these members,” he said.

But when asked whether he thought established unions would be able to resist that temptation, Dimondstein confessed his uncertainty. “Well, I don’t know how confident I am,” he said. “I know it’s necessary.”

When the workers floated the idea of staging protests or walkouts as an alternative, union officials responded cautiously. “We received the response that if we were to speak up, assert our rights publicly, we’d be terminated,” Fink said. “It was a self-defeating narrative.” The workers decided to form a union on their own without the formal blessing of the NLRB, a model known as a “solidarity union,” whose roots precede the modern labour movement. For workers who seek NLRB certification, doing so independent of an established union also has advantages, such as confounding the talking points of employers and consultants, who often paint unions as “third parties” seeking to hoard workers’ dues. At Amazon, the strategy was akin to sending a conventional army into battle against guerrillas: Organizers said the talking points had fallen flat once co-workers realized that the union consisted of fellow employees rather than outsiders. “When a worker comes up to me, they look at me, then see I have a badge on and say, ‘You work here?’ They ask it in the most surprising way,” said Angelika Maldonado, an Amazon employee on Staten Island who heads the union’s workers committee. “‘I’m like, ‘Yeah, I work here.’ It makes us relatable from the beginning.” In recent years, a variety of groups have sought to make it easier for workers to organize independently. The nonprofit Solidarity Fund has provided stipends to workers involved in organizing campaigns and awarded $2,500 grants to seven Amazon workers on Staten Island last year. A for-profit company, Unit, provides software allowing workers to track the support of co-workers and file authorization signatures electronically with the NLRB. The company, structured as a public benefit corporation, pairs workers with one of its professional organizers during the most delicate portions of the unionizing process, such as employer anti-union meetings. It recently helped its first group of workers unionize at Piedmont Health Services, a health care provider in North Carolina with roughly 40 eligible employees. The problem for independent organizing efforts is that their momentum can be hard to sustain, even with such cutting-edge tools, or after securing a win through a strike or an election. “The organizing never stops,” said Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of labour education research at Cornell University. “You can’t sit back. For a normal first contract campaign, it averages three years. If Amazon contests this in court, this is going to take a lot longer.” Established unions like the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which came close to winning a do-over election last week at an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, and recently notched a victory at outdoor retailer REI, can provide institutional support to see the effort through. For worker-led unions, such challenges may point to the need for a hybrid approach in which they retain control of their organizations but seek guidance and resources from more established unions — something that is already occurring to varying degrees. The Amazon workers on Staten Island received pro bono legal help from employees of established unions as well as office space, and the Communications Workers of America lent them a messaging platform capable of sending out texts to co-workers en masse. At Starbucks, Workers United has paid for extensive legal work, such as litigating the company’s challenges to election petitions. A Buffalo, New York, barista involved in the original campaign is also an organizer paid by Workers United. The question is whether traditional unions, while ramping up their contributions to these efforts, including opposition research and other public relations strategies, will be able to resist the temptation to seize control from the workers who fueled them. Dimondstein, who said his Postal Workers union was prepared to contribute resources to the Amazon campaign with no strings attached, advised his fellow union leaders to stand down and play a similar long game. “We need to make sure this doesn’t break down into jurisdictional fights — who’s getting these types of workers, these members,” he said. But when asked whether he thought established unions would be able to resist that temptation, Dimondstein confessed his uncertainty. “Well, I don’t know how confident I am,” he said. “I know it’s necessary.”

“My boyfriend brought his entire gaming system to the hospital during my 21-hour long induction,” Amber wrote at the top of the video, according to the Mirror.

However, several people were displeased with the man’s behaviour, and many questioned his commitment to take care of her pregnant partner.

“Wow. Red flag, friend,” commented one user.

“I love my games, but I’ve never attempted to do this got better things to worry about,” chimed in another user.

Someone else said: "I wouldn’t mind after labour but during is a different story."

But there were others who jumped in to defend the man.
