Sri Lanka’s Mendis ditches PSL for maiden IPL stint; replaces Butter at GT for playoffs

Kusal Mendis hit an unbeaten 68 to help clinch Sri Lanka's first T20 international series win over the West Indies with a thumping nine-wicket victory in the third and final game on Thursday.

Sri Lanka chased down their 163-run target with 12 balls to spare as a sell-out home crowd in Dambulla erupted.

"On that day I went for the press conference and I was not aware that Virat had scored a century. When suddenly that journalist asked that question, I didn’t know what to say.&nbsp;And also I didn’t understand the question clearly," Mendis was quoted as saying by Asian Mirror.

"Scoring 49 ODI tons is not an easy job to do, Virat is one of the brilliant cricketers in the world, later I realised what I said was absolutely wrong. I now feel I shouldn't have reacted the way I did," he added.

Notably, on the day Kohli scored the record-breaking ton, Mendis was asked in an interview if he would like to congratulate the Indian batter for the feat. However, Mendis, visibly irritated by the randomness of the question replied:&nbsp;"Why I would congratulate him?"

While a section of fans sympathised with Mendis saying he was not obligated to congratulate a rival, others said a simple positive message would not have done any harm to the Sri Lankan captain.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named Rumesh Ratnayake as the interim coach for the Australia tour but the former test bowler has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Ratnayake will not travel to Australia with the team but will join before the 1st T20I game, as he is currently in self-isolation," the SLC said in a statement.

Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera has retired from international cricket but would be available to play domestic games, the statement added.

The 34-year-old off-spinner laid bare Australia&#39;s spin frailties, claiming 6-70 as the world&#39;s top ranked test team folded for 183 in their pursuit of an improbable 413-run victory target. 
 
Perera, who had claimed 4-29 in the first innings and scored 64 in his team&#39;s second innings, became the first Sri Lankan player to score a fifty and claim 10 wickets in the same match as his side clinched their first test series victory over Australia since 1999. 
 
Resuming on 25 for three, Australia captain Steve Smith (30) and deputy David Warner (41) showed positive intent, frequently using their feet against the spinners and dealing mostly in boundaries even though it was merely delaying what looked inevitable. 
 
Perera separated them, trapping Warner leg-before with a straight delivery. The batsman reviewed the decision but could not get it overturned. 
 
The spinner then returned to induce Smith into giving a bat-pad catch to Kusal Mendis at forward short leg. 
 
Perera, whose all-round performance earned the man-of-the-match award, completed his five-wicket haul when Adam Voges (28) attempted a reverse sweep only to have his leg stump pegged back.
