Paul Pogba’s brother among four in police custody in relation to £11m blackmail plot against Juventus star

Kylian Mbappe played chief tormentor as Paris St Germain started their Champions League campaign by beating Juventus 2-1 at home on Tuesday, their first victory against the Italian side.

Mbappe opened the scoring with a stunning goal and added a second in the opening half before substitute Weston McKennie reduced the arrears after the break as the French champions' level went down a notch.

Juve had chances to equalise but keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made several good saves to make up for a blunder for the visitors' goal, ensuring PSG beat the Italian side for the first time in nine meetings, having lost the last six.

Christophe Galtier's team are level on three points in Group H with Benfica, who beat Maccabi Haifa 2-0.

"We had a great first half, with big moments. We scored two beautiful goals and played as a compact team," said Galtier, leaving his Juve counterpart Massimiliano Allegri with regrets.

"We were too timid in the first half and it's not easy to recover from such a start against such a top team," the Italian said.

The heavy smoke from the pre-game flares and firecrackers was still in the air when PSG took the lead in stunning fashion, as Mbappe volleyed home from Neymar's brilliant flick over the Juve defence after five minutes.

Vitinha and Marco Verratti bossed the midfield, snuffing out counter-attacks as the home side made a strong start.

Juve struggled to handle PSG on the left flank but had a chance in the 18th minute when Donnarumma denied Arkadiusz Milik with a superb save.

PSG, however, doubled their advantage four minutes later, with Mbappe finishing from just inside the area after a quick one-two with Achraf Hakimi for his eighth goal in his last seven Champions League matches.

In just 22 minutes, Juve had conceded as many goals as in their first five Serie A games.

The hosts soaked up some mild pressure from the Italian side before pressing forward again after the break with Neymar forcing Mattia Perin to a save in the 49th.

Lionel Messi then set up Mbappe down the right flank but the France forward, instead of sending the ball across to the unmarked Neymar, took his chance with a shot that went well wide.

What should have been a 3-0 turned into 2-1 when McKennie headed home from Filip Kostic's cross, benefiting from Donnarumma's ill-timed intervention, as the keeper came out but got nowhere near the ball, leaving the goal unguarded.

The Italy international, however, pulled off a brilliant save shortly afterwards to deny Dusan Vlahovic and was at it again later to block Manuel Locatelli's attempt.

Kylian Mbappe shines as PSG beat Juventus 2-1 to get off to a winning start in Champions League

Two heavyweights will lock horns in the UEFA Champions League group stage fixture when the Lionel Messi-starrer Paris Saint Germain (PSG) will take on the&nbsp;Italian giants Juventus in their first match on Tuesday as the 2022/23 season kicks off with a number of mega clashes in the opening week.&nbsp;

Talking about the PSG line-up, they have a star-studded team in the form of Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and the likes. While they were eliminated in the Round of 16 in last year's UCL season, they are expected to go the distance this time around with enough firepower at their disposal. On the other hand, Juventus have also not been at their best in the marquee tournament in the last few seasons with them having reached the final way back in the 2016/17 season. Since then, all they have managed are quarter-final finishes on the last two occasions.&nbsp;

PSG are currently at the top of the Ligue 1 standings, with five&nbsp;wins in half a dozen&nbsp;games, Juventus are placed 7th in the Serie A standings having earned only&nbsp;two&nbsp;wins in 5 encounters.

Juventus star Paul Pogba's elder brother Mathias Pogba has made some shocking allegations against him, accusing him of using witchcraft among others. Mathias' accusations came after Pogba alleged his brother was involved in attempted blackmail of the Juventus footballer earlier this year.

Mathias had taken to social media on Sunday to share a video vowing to expose his younger brother while promising to make 'explosive' revelations against him. Pogba's brother, who is a professional footballer himself, also mentioned French striker Kylian Mbappe in his video and said he has some information to share about him as well.

Soon after his video went viral on social media, Pogba's camp released a statement hinting that Mathias was part of a syndicate trying to extort money from him. After Pogba's accusations, Mathias took to social media once again on Sunday to respond to the allegations against him and opened a can of worms against his brother.

Mathias claimed Pogba used a&nbsp;witch doctor to cast a spell on his France teammate Mbappe. He also called Pogba a 'traitor' and 'hypocrite' while claiming that he almost died because of the 2018 World Cup winner.&nbsp;

“Hahahaha, what I expected to happen has happened: my little brother is finally starting to show his true face. Since it was he who started talking, lying to the police and who brought out the information, you can’t blame me." Mathias said on Twitter, as per Get French Football News.&nbsp;

"Paul, you really wanted to shut me up completely to lie and send me to prison, I suspected it. Now it’s true, my version of the facts actually happened and unlike you, I have enough to prove my words and your lies.

"I'll tell you again: brother, manipulating people is not good! It’s not about money: You implicated me in spite of myself, I almost died because of you, you left me in a hole and you want to play the innocent one. When everything is said people will see that there is no bigger coward, bigger traitor and bigger hypocrite than you on this earth.&nbsp;

"Kylian, now do you understand? I have no negative feelings toward you, my words are for your good, everything is true and proven, and the witch doctor is known! Sorry about this brother, a so-called Muslim deep in witchcraft, it’s never good to have a hypocrite and a traitor near you," he went on.

Paul Pogba denies allegations, accuses brother of extortion

As per Get French Football News, Pogba had filed a police complaint earlier this year after he was intimidated by two hooded men carrying assault rifles in an apartment in Paris in March this year. The two men demanded 13 million euros from the Juventus star, who was at his former club Manchester United at the time.

Pogba reportedly told the authorities that he believed the men behind the blackmail attempt were some of his childhood friends and his elder brother Mathias. The men told him that they were entitled to the money for 'protecting him' over the years.

"The recent declarations of Mathias Pogba on social media are unfortunately not a surprise. They are coming after threats and attempts of extortion by an organised gang against Paul Pogba," Pogba said in a statement released by his team after Mathias' video went viral on Sunday.

"This has been referred to the appropriate authorities both in Italy and in France a month ago," he added.

Pogba reportedly also told the authorities during questioning that the blackmailers had turned up at Juventus' training ground in Turin, Italy last month following which he decided to report the matter to the club's legal team and the police. Pogba has denied the allegations of using 'witchcraft', which he alleged was a fake story used by the blackmailers to extort money from him.

Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Manchester and joined the Manchester United camp on Tuesday (July 26). The superstar footballer touched down in Manchester along with his superagent&nbsp;Jorge Mendes to hold talks with new manager Erik ten Hag regarding his future with the Red Devils, ahead of the commencement of the new EPL season.

As per various reports, Ronaldo is eager to cut short his stay at the premier club -- with one year still remaining in his contract -- after the Red Devils failed to make a mark in the last EPL season, ending sixth and missing out on Champions League football for the 2022/23 season. Thus, Ronaldo is eager to be associated with a club where he can compete in the Champions League and, hence, the 37-year-old isn't happy with how things have panned out for him in his ongoing second innings at the club. Thus, reports suggest that the Portuguese captain has&nbsp;handed in a transfer request. His absence from Man United's pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia for personal reasons&nbsp;further raised speculations of his exit.

Was Alex Ferguson part of Ronaldo's meeting with Ten Hag over his Man UTD future? Here's the truth

Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has made a huge claim stating that Angel Di Maria's move to the Italian club this summer will be equivalent to Diego Maradona joining the Serie A during his playing days. Di Maria is currently a free agent after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) expired this year and is searching for a new club with Juventus one of the favourites to sign him.

The Argentinian winger was Buffon's teammate at PSG when the legendary Italian goalkeeper played for the French side after leaving Juventus. Di Maria is one of the most decorated footballers of the present era having won several titles at his former clubs Real Madrid and PSG.

Heaping praise on his former PSG teammate, Buffon called Di Maria a technically gifted footballer, who can score goals, produce assists and dribble past defenders at ease. He went on to compare his potential arrival at Juventus to his late Argentinean compatriot playing for Serie A side Napoli in his career.

“Right now, Di Maria in Serie A, is like Maradona. Am I clear?," - Buffon told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Footballers must be valued considering the context where they play. Today Serie A is technically poorer and Angel has so much technique.

He is decisive in front of goal, he dribbles past his opponents so easily. He is good at delivering assists and runs up and down on the pitch. He can play in different roles. In a few words: he is a football player," he added.

At 34, Di Maria might already be past his best but has a plethora of experience playing for top teams across various leagues in the world which can help Juventus in challenging for the Serie A title once again next season. Buffon believes age is just a number for players like Di Maria as he compared the Argentinian winger to the likes of his former PSG teammates Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

“I am 44, but I still play. Age doesn’t matter. Motivation and passion are much more important and the same goes for determination. If Di Maria joins Juventus, it means that he’s ready to do so," said Buffon.

“We are talking of an exemplary professional, a nice guy, one who never gives up and fights during games and training sessions. I repeat, for today’s Serie A, he’d be like Maradona. At PSG, I played with Neymar, a young Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti, but Di Maria was not inferior to any of them.

“When he won the Decima at Madrid in 2014, he was playing with Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. He was always a step back but knew how to play as a winger, attacking midfielder and even mezzala. Whoever signs him, and I hope it’s Juve, makes a deal. We are talking about a champion and football needs champions," he added.

I gave it my all, soon I will be the biggest Juventus fan from the outside. After so many years within this club, you cannot shake it off."

Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini confirms to part ways with club at end of the season

Inter Milan won the Coppa Italia after an extra-time double from Croatian forward Ivan Perisic earned his side a 4-2 victory over Juventus in Wednesday`s final, ensuring Massimiliano Allegri`s team will finish the season trophyless.

Inter, who are still in the running to retain their Serie A title this term, started on the front foot, racing into the lead after six minutes in the Stadio Olimpico as Nicolo Barella arrowed a stunning strike into the top corner. Juventus responded well with Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic denied by a superb save from Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic in a pulsating first half, before defender Alex Sandro levelled five minutes after the break.

Vlahovic then completed the turnaround less than two minutes later to spark wild scenes of celebration among Juve`s players, but Hakan Calhanoglu`s expertly-converted penalty took the match to extra time.
Perisic then took centre stage, firing his side in front once more with another penalty, again emphatically converted, before making sure of a first Coppa Italia triumph since 2011 for Inter with a powerful finish into the top corner.

Allegri, who was sent to the stands for protesting against a decision late on, will become the first Juventus manager since 2011 to finish a season without having won a single trophy, with Juve fourth in Serie A and out of title contention.

"We just have to congratulate Inter for winning," Allegri told Sport Mediaset. "We do not win a single trophy this season, we have to retain that anger for next season, when we must get back to winning.

The Serie A title, where AC Milan have a two-point lead over their rivals with two games to play, is the next target. "This team never gives up," he said. "If I ever needed a response, I got nothing but responses from this side from July to today, it`s been one long whirlwind of emotions.

"Now we have two more Serie A matches to play and we want to end the season as well as possible.
"It is also only fair we enjoy these moments, it had been a decade since we won the Coppa Italia or the Supercoppa, so I am happy for the club, these amazing players and the fans who stuck by us from start to finish."

Inter Milan clinch Coppa Italia to ensure Juventus will end season without a trophy

Juventus substitute Moise Kean struck a late winner to steal a 2-1 comeback win at Sassuolo in Serie A on Monday and boost his side`s hold on the final Champions League qualifying spot.

The victory moved fourth-placed Juve to 66 points from 34 matches, one point behind Napoli in third and eight clear of AS Roma, who are fifth, in the race for Europe. Sassuolo stay 10th.

The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges, taking the lead when Italy forward Giacomo Raspadori drilled the ball past Wojciech Szczesny at his near post in the 38th minute.

But with their first real attempt on goal moments before the interval, the visitors levelled through Argentine striker Paulo Dybala, who fired home from inside the area.

Alvaro Morata thought he had completed the comeback early in the second half but his header was brilliantly saved by Andrea Consigli, only for the goalkeeper to let one through his legs as Kean turned smartly and snatched a winner two minutes from time.

"The team has grown a lot, but we have to manage games better," Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri told Sky Sport Italia. "I don`t think about changing a lot of players, but we will need one or two players (signings). The team is having a good season.

"There is a bit of tiredness, but I thank the guys. Now we have a good advantage over the fifth spot, we are one point behind Napoli and we have to keep working."

Mid-table Sassuolo, who have 46 points and little to play for, were determined to make Juve`s life hard in Emilia-Romagna, and would have gone in front earlier than they did had Szczesny not made fine saves to deny Domenico Berardi and Raspadori.

Their opener did come through the lively Raspadori, a goal Szczesny will not want to see again, as the strike went past him at his near post from a tight angle.

A goal out of nowhere for Juve got them back in the match as Dybala, who has announced he is leaving at the end of the season, gave a reminder of his quality with his ninth league goal of the campaign.

It was all Juve in the second half, with Consigli denying them time and again before Kean stepped off the bench to win it late on.

The victory means Juventus have gained 12 points from losing positions in Serie A since the start of 2022, at least five more points than any other team in this period.

A Spanish judge has lifted measures that prevented UEFA and FIFA from taking action against clubs that wanted to create a European Super League.

In the ruling, published on Thursday, the commercial court in Madrid said it was lifting measures that had been adopted in April last year as even if clubs were punished by FIFA and UEFA it would not stop them going ahead with their Super League plans.

Of the 12 clubs that originally backed the breakaway Super League, only Spanish sides Real Madrid and Barcelona and Italian club Juventus remain.

Spanish judge lifts protection for Super League clubs Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus

Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic pounced 15 minutes from time to earn Juventus a 2-1 comeback victory at Cagliari in Serie A on Saturday.

Juve made a slow start in Sardinia and fell behind when Italy striker Joao Pedro stroked the hosts into a 10th-minute lead.

The visitors dominated the remainder of the opening period and got themselves back on level terms on the stroke of halftime when Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt headed home.

There was only going to be one winner as Juve remained well on top in the second half, with the pressure finally telling as January signing Vlahovic scored his fifth league goal since arriving in Turin to seal victory for his new side.

The win helped fourth-placed Juve close to within four points of Napoli in third, ahead of the Neapolitans` clash with Fiorentina on Sunday.

At the other end of the standings, Cagliari`s fifth successive league loss left them three points above the relegation zone, having played two more games than Venezia in 18th.

"Today it was important to keep the advantage over the teams behind us.

"We have to take into consideration that Vlahovic is 22 and has been playing as a starter for a year and a half. At Juventus there is a different pressure. His growth will become complete when he is able to manage his energies."

An unbeaten league run stretching back to November before Inter's visit to Turin had dragged Juve back into the title race, but the Scudetto would have felt even further away after Joao Pedro's fine finish from the edge of the penalty area – his 12th league goal of the season.

Argentine striker Paulo Dybala, who is leaving the club at the end of the season, wasted a golden chance to complete the comeback early in the second half, firing over from a good position.

Cuadrado drilled wide as that game-killing second continued to elude Juventus, before Vlahovic poked home from close range to break Cagliari's resistance and get Juve back to winning ways.

Serie A: Dusan Vlahovic strikes as Juventus earn crucial win against Cagliari

Villarreal scored three late goals to secure a stunning 3-0 Champions League second-leg victory at Juventus on Wednesday, condemning the Serie A side to a 4-1 aggregate loss and a last-16 exit for the third successive season.

Having fallen before the quarter-finals against Olympique Lyonnais and Porto in the previous two seasons, in-form Juventus, who had lost just once in their last 21 matches in all competitions, were firm favourites to progress.

Juve dominated the first half and were unfortunate not to go into the break in front after Dusan Vlahovic's brilliant flicked effort came back off the crossbar, but they could not keep up the pressure in the second period.

Villarreal were content to sit back and wait for their moment, which came in the 78th minute after the visitors were awarded a penalty following a VAR review, with substitute Gerard Moreno, who had only just come on, squeezing the spot kick home.

Juve threw on Argentine striker Paulo Dybala as they looked to level the tie, but goals down the other end from defender Pau Torres and another penalty, this time converted by Arnaut Danjuma, completed a famous win for Unai Emery's team.

It is the first time Emery has progressed from a tie in the knockout stages of the Champions League, while Villarreal had not qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition since 2008-09.

"I actually missed the last penalty I took in a game, but everyone had my back and I knew I was going to score," Moreno said.

"Once we got ahead we were more comfortable. We showed that we are always able to compete with the best at the highest level, whoever is on the pitch."

Juventus came into the last 16 having also enjoyed an impressive group-stage campaign where they finished top ahead of the current holders Chelsea.

A blistering start saw Spanish striker Alvaro Morata denied by a fine save from Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, giving the home fans hope that progression to the last eight would be a smooth process.

January signing Vlahovic was proving to be a real handful, drilling wide before his improvised effort came out off the woodwork.

Villarreal were enjoying plenty of possession, but could not do much with it. They looked more comfortable after the break, however, as Juve struggled to keep up their momentum.

Daniele Rugani's lunging tackle on Francis Coquelin gave Villarreal the chance to lead the tie for the first time.

Juve keeper Wojciech Szczesny, who saved a penalty at the weekend, almost kept out the spot kick, but saw the ball squirm through his hands.

Torres's finish from a corner sparked wild scenes of celebration with Villarreal knowing the job was done, even though there was still time for another converted penalty, after Matthijs de Ligt’s handball.

Having dominated for such long periods, only Juve will know how they managed to lose by three goals.

"I think the team played well for over 75 minutes," Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "In the second half, Villarreal decided to just defend in block but they had one chance and they took it.

Champions League: Villarreal knock Juventus out with 3-0 victory to enter quarter-finals

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said that Leonardo Bonucci could miss Friday's derby clash with Torino through injury, having just returned to action, and it remains uncertain whether the defender will be fit for next week's Champions League.

The Italy centre back played his first games of 2022 last week following a spell on the sidelines with a muscle injury, but his manager had further bad news over Bonucci's fitness.

"Tomorrow's game is really complicated," Allegri told a news conference on Thursday. "I am sure we won't have Leonardo Bonucci. He has calf fatigue and we`ll see if he can recover for Tuesday (against Villarreal in the Champions League last 16).

"He played in Bergamo (against Atalanta on Sunday) and he was already fatigued in the first half."

I don't know if Dusan Vlahovic, Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala will play. Federico Bernardeschi is still not ready because of an adductor problem, so we can't take any risk. Federico Chiesa is out, Giorgio Chiellini is out, Danilo is suspended."

Allegri's side needed a stoppage-time intervention from Danilo to salvage a point at the home of fellow Champions League chasers Atalanta last weekend, but the draw stretched Juve's unbeaten run in Serie A to 11 games.

Title talk may be premature, given fourth-placed Juve trail leaders AC Milan by nine points still, but they will be keen to keep the pressure on with victory over city rivals Torino, who they have not been beaten by in 15 matches in all competitions.

"The derby is always a special game, we play against a Torino side that has real soul," he added. "Ivan Juric (Torino's coach) has brought their DNA back to the club.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci could miss crucial games due to injury

Tottenham Hotspur signed Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on Monday`s transfer deadline day, as part of manager Antonio Conte`s attempts to reshape his squad.

Conte has called for reinforcements on multiple occasions since taking charge of the Premier League club, but was forced to wait until the final day of the window to sign the midfield duo.

Juventus said in a statement that Spurs signed Bentancur on a contract running up to 2026 in a deal worth 19 million euros ($21.30 million), with six million euros added on in bonuses.

Meanwhile, Kulusevski arrived on loan until June 2023 for a fee of 10 million euros, with an obligation to buy for 35 million euros, pending certain "sporting objectives" being met during the 2022-23 season.

Kulusevski, 21, joined Juventus from Atalanta in a 35 million euro deal in 2020, but has failed to hold down a regular starting spot in Turin.

Bentancur, who signed for Juventus in 2017, won three Serie A titles and made 181 appearances in his five seasons with the club.

The two midfielders are the latest additions to the Spurs set-up to have ties with Turin, with Spurs manager Conte and managing director of football Fabio Paratici also having previously worked with the Serie A club.

Spurs also wrapped up an outgoing transfer on the final day of the January transfer window, with Tanguy Ndombele returning to former club Olympique Lyonnais on loan with an option to buy for 65 million euros, according to media reports.

Seventh-placed Tottenham remain well in the mix for fourth spot, being just two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United in the league with two games in hand and also having games in hand over West Ham United and Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur sign Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus on deadline day

Juventus have signed Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, the Italian club announced on Friday, with the deal worth up to a maximum of 80 million euros ($89.22 million), plus other charges, making it the biggest transfer of the January window so far.

The 22-year-old, who is the joint-top scorer in Serie A this season with 17 goals, has signed a deal until June 2026 in Turin.

"Juventus... has reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the definitive acquisition... of the player Dusan Vlahovic for a fee of 70.0 million euros, payable in three years," Juventus said in a statement.

"Plus the solidarity contribution envisaged by the FIFA regulations and ancillary charges for a total of 11.6 million euros. In addition, bonuses of up to a maximum of 10.0 million euros are envisaged for the achievement of growing sporting goals."

Vlahovic could make his Juve debut when they host mid-table Hellas Verona on Feb. 6 in Serie A.

He becomes the most expensive transfer of the January window so far, ahead of Spaniard Ferran Torres, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City for around 55 million euros.

Fiorentina publicly put Vlahovic up for sale after he refused their offers of a contract extension, with his deal due to expire at the end of next season.

The Serbian also becomes the most expensive January signing ever in Serie A, ahead of AC Milan`s purchase of Lucas Paqueta from Flamengo in 2019 for a reported 35 million euros.

Vlahovic became one of the most sought-after young players in Europe during four years in Florence and hit his stride last season as he scored 21 league goals and won the Serie A Best Young Player award.

He continued that form under new coach Vicenzo Italiano this season, scoring 17 goals in 21 Serie A games, a record only matched by prolific Lazio striker Ciro Immobile.

Only three players in Europe`s top-five leagues have a better record than the Serbian`s tally of 38 league goals over the last two seasons: Bayern Munich`s Robert Lewandowski (64), Borussia Dortmund`s Erling Haaland (43) and Real Madrid`s Karim Benzema (40).

The news did not go down well with Fiorentina fans, as another of their star players left for rivals Juventus, following in the footsteps of the likes of Federico Chiesa and Federico Bernardeschi.

Insulting and threatening banners were left outside the club`s Artemio Franchi stadium on Monday as reports of Vlahovic`s impending move to Turin circulated.

Juventus are fifth in Serie A, six points ahead of seventh-placed Fiorentina with a game in hand.
Massimiliano Allegri`s side have struggled for goals this season, and their record of 34 league strikes is the 11th-best in the division.

Juventus win race to sign Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic

Juventus on Tuesday thrashed Sampdoria to reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup while Lazio booked a clash with AC Milan by defeating Udinese. Juventus outplayed Sampdoria from the first minute as they fired four past the visitors at the Allianz Stadium.

With 15 shots on target from a total of 26 efforts on goal, the Bianconeri oozed confidence which set them well for Sunday`s Serie A encounter with Milan at San Siro.

Juan Cuadrado wasn`t denied for long in the match as a powerful free-kick from the edge of the penalty area gave the keeper no chance and Juve were in front after 25 minutes. One minute later, the Bianconeri had the ball in the net again.

Serie A: Clubs suspend ticket sales as Italy reduce stadium capacity to 50%

Juventus&nbsp;took advantage of Atalanta's goalless draw at Genoa with a 2-0 win over Cagliari which inched them closer to Serie A's Champions League places, as Salernitana's trip to Udinese became the season's first coronavirus-related casualty.

Moise Kean's header five minutes before the break and Federico Bernardeschi's precision finish after a break-away late on at the Allianz Stadium moved Juve to within four points of fourth place in Italy's top flight, currently occupied by Atalanta.

A fourth win in five matches means Massimiliano Allegri's side end 2021 on a high but it was another in a long line of underwhelming performances from the Old Lady of Italian football, who sit fifth nine points behind league leaders Inter Milan ahead of their home clash with Torino on Wednesday.

After the winter break they face a true test of their ambitions for the season, with matches against Napoli, Roma, AC Milan and Atalanta all coming by mid-February.

"If we get to the end of February with the same gap between us and the first four places as now I'll be happy," Allegri said to DAZN.

“You can't win all your matches with your direct rivals so from then on they'll have to play each other while we have a simpler calendar.

Juve were missing Paulo Dybala and Federico Chiesa in attack and rarely clicked going forward, while a troubled away side can wonder what might have been with better finishing.

Twice in the second half Cagliari, who are in the midst of a full-blown crisis after failing to muster a league win since mid-October, failed to put away gilt-edged chances following sloppy defending from the hosts.

Under-fire Cagliari coach Walter Mazzarri could hardly believe his eyes when, picked out completely alone on the hour mark by Raoul Bellanova's perfect low cross, Dalbert somehow shanked wide with the goal at his mercy.

And eight minutes later Joao Pedro, just about the only bright sport for the Sardinian side this season with his nine Serie A goals, headed straight at Wojciech Szczesny from point-blank range.

Bernardeschi's first goal in Serie A since July 2020 late on condemned second-from-bottom Cagliari to their third defeat on the bounce, although one that was less humiliating than the previous two 4-0 thumpings.

<h2>Covid strikes Salernitana</h2>

They are a point behind Genoa, who didn't have a single shot on target as they held a curiously off-form Atalanta team now winless in three and sweating the fitness of striker Duvan Zapata after the Colombian limped off in the first half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The biggest news of the day came earlier at Udinese, as the match with Salernitana officially went ahead despite health authorities in Salerno requesting the away side not leave for northeastern Italy.

The match was eventually abandoned 45 minutes after the official kick-off time of 1830 local time (1730 GMT), with the Udinese players remaining in the Dacia Arena's dressing rooms knowing their opposition was not going to show up.

Before the game Udinese's Pierpaolo Marino expressed annoyance at Salernitana not showing up due to two cases in the squad when just over a year ago his club had sent a team to Lazio despite having seven players and former coach Luca Gotti out with Covid infections.

However Salernitana sporting director Angelo Fabiani was unmoved, saying the club had organised a charter flight for those who had tested negative but were contacted by health authorities, who banned the whole team from travelling as they had to isolate as contact cases.

"If we're banned by the authorities from travelling, what are we supposed to do?" Fabiani asked.

Salernitana now await the ruling from the football authorities regarding the result and whether the match will be rescheduled.

However the head of the Italian FA said on Tuesday that they will be kicked out of Serie A if a buyer for the club is not found by December 31, as they are owned by Lazio chief Claudio Lotito and ownership of multiple clubs in the same division is not allowed.

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said he did not have to convince players to remain at the Premier League club as media speculation grows over the future of French World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

The 28-year-old is returning to Manchester from Dubai, where he spent time rehabilitating after a thigh injury in November and could yet feature in Rangnick's plans, despite being out of contract at the end of this season.

Ralf Rangnick says he does not have to persuade Paul Pogba to stay at Manchester United

Juventus said Italian prosecutors had ordered a new search of its offices under an investigation into the Serie A club's financial accounting and were also examining the terms of the sale of star player Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United.

Publishing a supplement to an investor document for a share issue on Thursday, Juventus reiterated that it had always acted in compliance with existing laws and it was fully collaborating with authorities.

Turin prosecutors said last week they were investigating the club and some of its senior managers, including Chairman Andrea Agnelli and Vice President Pavel Nedved, in a case centred around player transfers.

The prosecutors said they were checking whether Turin-based Juventus provided false communications to investors and issued invoices for transactions that never took place.

Italian financial police searched the club's offices last week to seize documents relating to player transfers between 2019 and 2021.

The latest search mentioned in the investor document was carried out on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Hit hard by the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juventus are seeking to raise 400 million euros in cash by selling new shares to cut debt and repair its finances.

In the supplement to the cash call prospectus, Juventus said prosecutors were also looking at its financial statements for the first half of 2021 in relation to Ronaldo's sale.

In August, Juventus reached an agreement to sell the Portuguese player to Manchester United for 23 million euros ($26 million), including 8 million euros linked to the achievement of specific performance objectives.

Juventus said at the time the deal entailed a 14 million euro hit on its results for the 2020/21 financial year, contributing to a record-high loss of 210 million euros.

A judicial source said prosecutors were checking the accuracy of figures in the club's financial statement relating to the transaction after a wiretapped conversation between club officials mentioned a document that called into question the fairness of the accounting.

Lawyers for Juventus and its managers said the new search did not reflect new charges being investigated, adding the warrant mentioned a document which had yet to be found.

The club said in the supplement to the share issue document that it did not believe the investigation and the searches constituted a "material adverse change" under a contractual clause that would allow the banking consortium guaranteeing the cash call to withdraw its commitment.

Juventus, one of 12 leading European clubs that made a failed attempt to set up a breakaway European Super League in April to beef up their finances, is controlled by Exor, the holding company of Italy's Agnelli family.

Juventus say prosecutors examining terms of sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United

Paulo Dybala saved&nbsp;Juventus&nbsp;on Sunday with a controversial late penalty which earned his team a 1-1 draw at Inter Milan, while Napoli's perfect start to the season came to an end with a goalless draw at Roma.

Argentina forward Dybala slotted home his spot-kick with a minute left after Denzel Dumfries was ruled to have kicked Alex Sandro as he tried to clear the ball, a decision that enraged Inter to the point that coach Simone Inzaghi was sent off by referee Maurizio Mariani.

His leveller came in his first appearance after a month out with a thigh injury, the 27-year-old coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute.&nbsp;

"We were up against a very good team and given the way the game was going, we're happy with the point," Dybala said to DAZN.

Juve are up to sixth on 15 points, level with Atalanta and Fiorentina, while champions Inter are seven points behind Napoli and city rivals AC Milan in third place.

Inter thought they had won the match thanks to a goal from Edin Dzeko, who rolled into an empty net in the 17th minute after Hakan Calhanoglu's rocket of a shot rebounded to him off the crossbar.

It was another important goal from Dzeko, who also starred in Inter's 3-1 Champions League win over Sheriff Tiraspol midweek and has quickly become a fan favourite at the San Siro after arriving from Roma in the summer.

Juve were fortunate to get a point, not only because of the way the penalty came about, but because of another underwhelming display.

Massimiliano Allegri's side offered little in the way of goal threat even after the introduction of Federico Chiesa and Dybala just after the hour mark.

Inter, meanwhile, were livid at being denied a win in what is traditionally their biggest domestic home match of the season thanks to what they saw as a very soft penalty.

"That was the only way we were going to concede a goal... we ran the game from start to finish, we gave them nothing," said Inzaghi to DAZN.&nbsp;

"I'm not happy because the referee is two metres away, says everything is fine and then is called (by VAR)... we deserved more."

<h2>Napoli run ends</h2>

Napoli's winning streak ended at eight games following their draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

Both sides will be ruing missed chances which could have decided a tight, at times bad-tempered, match between two rivals in which both coaches were sent off.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands for dissent with nine minutes left while an incredulous Luciano Spalletti was shown a red card after the final whistle for what referee Davide Massa thought was sarcastic applause.

It was a decent result for Roma, who needed a good showing following their 6-1 humilation at the hands of Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt in midweek.

"It's a good point, we came here knowing Roma wanted to react after Thursday's defeat and had their fans behind them," Kalidou Koulibaly said to DAZN.

<h2>Simeone hits four</h2>

Earlier Giovanni Simeone struck all four goals as Verona hammered Lazio 4-1.

Simeone, the son of former Lazio player and long-time Atletico Madrid coach Diego, struck twice in each half to sink Maurizio Sarri's side, who briefly threatened when Ciro Immobile halved the deficit seconds after the break.

Verona move up to 11th on 11 points after starting the day hovering above the drop zone, while Lazio drop to eighth.

Sarri had selected the great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in his squad for the match, but did not play him.

Defender Romano Floriani Mussolini, 18, came through the youth ranks at the club after previously playing for their local rivals Roma.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, are seventh after their 3-0 stroll past struggling Cagliari, while Atalanta drew 1-1 at home with Udinese in the day's early match.

Inter, meanwhile, were livid at being denied a win in what is traditionally their biggest domestic home match of the season thanks to what they saw as a very soft penalty. "That was the only way we were going to concede a goal... we ran the game from start to finish, we gave them nothing," said Inzaghi to DAZN. "I'm not happy because the referee is two metres away, says everything is fine and then is called (by VAR)... we deserved more." Both sides will be ruing missed chances which could have decided a tight, at times bad-tempered, match between two rivals in which both coaches were sent off. Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said he felt his side had lost their mental sharpness even before the Champions League holders stepped on the pitch ahead of their 1-0 loss to Juventus in Turin on Wednesday.

Federico Chiesa's goal early in the second half was enough to inflict a first Champions League group-stage defeat on Chelsea since September 2019, with the Blues suffering their second successive 1-0 loss in all competitions.

"We had a very good training session yesterday," Tuchel told reporters. "We were absolutely sharp and looked very fresh and very hungry, ready for bounce back (from defeat to Manchester City on Saturday).

"I think it's very difficult to find rhythm against a team that defends so deep, it was completely the other way around in the Manchester City game.

"The big difference was that we gave big mistakes away that cost us confidence. Early today I could tell it was different. We were not as fresh mentally as we were in training yesterday. I don't know why."

Chelsea enjoyed 73% possession in Turin against a Juventus side who have been struggling in Serie A this season and registered just one shot on target all match - Romelu Lukaku`s tame early effort.

Tuchel's team did not have a single attempt on target against City at the weekend, but the German insisted he is not worried by their lack of attacking threat.

"We were lacking runs, we were struggling to find our rhythm and to keep the belief structure," Tuchel added.

"Maybe it is a shooting problem, because if you don’t shoot then you don’t score. But if you play against a team that sit so deep like today it is hard to take shots. We will learn."

The Chelsea success was Juve's third win in a row in all competitions, as the Serie A team moved onto six points at the top of Champions League Group H.

"There is no turning point, let's just take the six points and be happy. The (league) championship is another thing.

Champions League: Thomas Tuchel believes Chelsea lost mental sharpness ahead of Juventus loss

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said his team will be punished if they sit back in their Champions League clash with holders Chelsea in Turin on Wednesday as he called for his side to take the game to their opponents.

Juventus has endured a difficult start to the season after failing to win any of their opening four league games for the first time in 60 years, and come into the match against Chelsea with several injuries.

They did get off to a winning start in the Champions League against Malmo two weeks ago, while Allegri's men also earned victories in their last two Serie A matches.

The Juve coach hopes that will give his side a boost ahead of Wednesday's encounter.

"You need to apply pressure but you have to play well," Allegri told a news conference.

"You can't play 95 minutes under pressure. When you have the ball you have to breathe to build and recover immediately.

"They are strong on the counter-attack, they are strong in dead balls. It will be difficult to find gaps and we will have to be good all over the pitch.

"We will need patience, but we will have to have fun. We have improved in recent games. The emotion is natural. In front of us we have a team where if you make mistakes, you are punished."

Without the injured Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, Allegri said he has no other option but to deploy Moise Kean in the lone striker role.

"He (Kean) has to play and score," Allegri added. "One thing he knows how to do well is scoring. He has to improve when he has to play with the team, in terms of individual technique."

Speaking at the same news conference, defender Giorgio Chiellini insisted no extra motivation was needed ahead of such blockbuster European encounters.

"These are very nice games, you can prepare them easily.

Champions League: We must take the game to Chelsea, says Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri

UEFA, the European football`s governing body, confirmed on Tuesday that it will appeal to a higher court after their legal action against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus was suspended.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are among the 12 founding clubs of the so-called European Super League which was declared to be set up in April to challenge UEFA`s Champions League, but failed within 48 hours as the other nine clubs all announced their withdrawal.

UEFA decided in May that it would fine the nine clubs including the Big Six from English Premier League and would consider to take legal action against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus as they remain committed to the Super League, reports Xinhua.

Late on Monday, UEFA declared that the proceedings against the three clubs "null and void" after a commercial court in Madrid ruled out that governing body had no authority to take action.

However, UEFA changed their mind on Tuesday morning saying that "UEFA does not recognize the jurisdiction of the Court in Madrid and firmly believes that it has always acted in full compliance with the pending proceedings --UEFA has today made formal submissions to the Court in Madrid evidencing its ongoing compliance with the orders."

"In addition, UEFA has filed a motion for the recusal of the judge presiding over the current proceedings as it believes there are significant irregularities in these proceedings. In line with Spanish law -- and in the fundamental interests of justice -- UEFA fully expects the judge in question to immediately stand aside pending the full and proper consideration of this motion," read the statement released on UEFA`s website.

'Sir Alex, this one is for you': Cristiano Ronaldo pens emotional note on Manchester United return, says 'back where I belong'

Lacklustre Juventus began life without Cristiano Ronaldo by suffering a suprising 1-0 defeat at home to promoted Empoli in Serie A on Saturday.

Juve, who this week agreed a deal with Manchester United to sell Ronaldo to the Premier League club, looked shorn of ideas up front in the Portuguese forward`s absence.

Other than some fierce Federico Chiesa strikes from range, the hosts did not threaten to score in the first half as Empoli edged into a surprise lead when captain Leonardo Mancuso swept the ball home at the far post in the 21st minute.

After the break, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri introduced Alvaro Morata, Dejan Kulusevski and new signing Manuel Locatelli from the bench but, even with all that firepower on the pitch, they created few openings of note.

Empoli saw out their first win back in the Italian top flight in relative comfort, leaving Juve on one point from their opening two matches of the season.

"It`s a difficult moment," Allegri told DAZN. "We need to grow, we have to face our problems together.

"There have been too many players who have done things poorly who don`t usually drop to that standard."

Having started the season with a 2-2 draw at Udinese, Juve, even without Ronaldo, were widely expected to have too much for their newly-promoted opponents.

Chiesa, who came in for Ronaldo, almost broke the deadlock early on from distance, but his arrowing effort was brilliantly saved by Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

That was as good as it got in the first half for Juve, with the visitors breaking well and creating the opening for Mancuso, who reacted quickest to the loose ball in the area to fire home.

Juve supporters let their feelings be known as attack after attack broke down, with Paulo Dybala especially guilty of some wayward passing.

The home side threw everything at their opponents late on but apart from Locatelli`s dragged effort wide, an equaliser never looked likely, with that Ronaldo-shaped hole a tough one to fill.

Juve failed to win their first two league matches at the start of a season for just the third time in their last 52 top-flight campaigns.
