A federal judge presiding over former President Donald Trump's trial on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election has ordered his attorneys and federal prosecutors to appear in court on Friday for a hearing to help determine how evidence can be used and shared in the case.

U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan set the hearing for Friday at 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT), shortly after Trump's attorneys and members of U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith's office had clashed in a joint court over when to schedule the proceeding.

Prosecutors had said they were available all week, while Trump's lawyers had asked for a postponement until early next week.

Friday's hearing comes after Trump's defense team on Monday opposed a request from prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a protective order to ensure confidential evidence is not shared publicly by Trump, suggesting he could use the information to intimidate witnesses. Trump's attorneys said limits would infringe on his right to free speech, protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Trump is not expected to be present in the courtroom on Friday, after Chutkan waived his appearance.

Typically, defense lawyers do not oppose such protective orders because doing so can delay the government from producing the evidence it intends to use at trial in a process known as discovery.

The disagreement between the parties over the hearing date represented the latest effort by Trump's team to delay or slow legal proceedings.

US judge sets hearing on evidence in Trump's 2020 election case

A court in Texas, USA on Friday (August 4) issued a temporary order to support group of women and doctors who brought a lawsuit to challenge the state's abortion bans.

The ruling however, was stayed just hours later after Texas attorney general's office filed an appeal. Judge Jessica Mangrum's decision has been blocked until the lawsuit is decided on its merits in a trial slated to begin next March.

The case was filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights. It argued that the way medical exceptions are defined under Texas law is confusing. This, it said stoked fear among doctors and caused a "health crisis.

Mangrum wrote in her judgment that she agreed that the women were "delayed or denied access to abortion care because of the widespread uncertainty regarding physicians' level of discretion under the medical exception to Texas's abortion bans."

Judge Mangrum ordered that doctors can't be prosecuted for exercising their "good faith judgment."&nbsp;

She said that doctors should be allowed to decide what they thought constituted medical emergencies which would risk a woman's "life and/or health (including their fertility)," she said.&nbsp;

First Assistant Attorney General Brent Webster said in a statement that the state filed an appeal that "stays an activist Austin judge's attempt to override Texas abortion laws pending a ruling by the Texas Supreme Court."

Last month, the court in Austin, Texas heard harrowing testimony from the plaintiffs last month.

Amanda Zurawski, after whom the case is named, said she was denied an abortion despite her water breaking very early in her pregnancy, meaning a miscarriage was inevitable.&nbsp;

She said that her doctor told her that she "couldn't intervene, because the baby's heart was still beating and inducing labor would have been considered an illegal abortion."

Zurawski went into life-threatening septic shock and the fetus was stillborn.

This lawsuit is the first that was brought on behalf of women who were denied abortions since the Supreme Court in the US overturned a landmark judgment that previously guaranteed constitutional right to abortion.&nbsp;

In Texas, if a physician is found guilty of providing abortions, they may get handed up to 99-year prison sentence. In addition to this, a fine of up to USD 100,000 may be slapped and their medical license may be revoked.

A state "trigger" ban went into effect when Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, prohibiting abortions even in cases of rape or incest. Texas also has a law that allows private citizens to sue anyone who performs or aids an abortion.

Judge in Texas briefly lifts abortion ban for medical emergencies

In a surprise ruling, a Canadian judge stated that the “thumbs-up” emoji can be considered just as valid as a signature. He said the court needs to adapt to the “new reality” of how communication takes place between people and asked a farmer to pay C$82,000 ($61,442), which was part of an unfulfilled contract.

The Court of King’s Bench heard the case in which a mass text message was sent by a grain buyer with South West Terminal to clients in March 2021, which advertised that the company was aiming to purchase 86 tonnes of flax at a price of C$17 ($12.73) per bushel. The incident took place in the province of Saskatchewan.&nbsp;

Kent Mickleborough, who is a buyer, called over farmer Chris Achter on the phone and texted him a picture of a contract which guaranteed delivery of the flax in November. He asked the farmer to “please confirm flax contract” in the message.

Achter, who resides in the community of Swift Current, responded to the contract by sending a thumbs-up emoji. However, in November, Achter failed to deliver the flax and the prices for the crop had surged by that time.&nbsp;

<h2>Dispute over emoji&nbsp;</h2>

Mickleborough and Achter got into a dispute over what is the meaning of the emoji. Referring to the previous contacts which were confirmed over a text message, the buyer suggested that the emoji meant Achter was agreeing to the terms mentioned in the contract.&nbsp;

However, Achter claimed that the emoji was an indication of the fact that he has received the contract in the text message.

“I deny that he accepted the thumbs-up emoji as a digital signature of the incomplete contract,” said Achter in an affidavit. “I did not have time to review the Flax Contract and merely wanted to indicate that I did receive his text message," he added.&nbsp;

In between the court proceedings, Achter’s lawyer raised an objection over a cross-examination of his client into the meaning of the thumbs-up emoji, stating that his client “is not an expert in emojis”.

Justice Timothy Keene, who even went on to refer to the definition of the symbol mentioned in dictionary.com, lamented that the case “led the parties to a far-flung search for the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone in cases from Israel, New York State and some tribunals in Canada, etc. to unearth what a 👍 emoji means”.

The concerns raised by the defence that permitting the thumbs-up emoji to signify acceptance “would open up the floodgates” to new interpretations of various emojis, including the ‘fist bump’ and ‘hand shake’ were also dismissed by Keene.&nbsp;

The ruling said government agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services and the FBI could not talk to social media companies for "the purpose of urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech" under the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

US judge restricts Biden officials from contact with social media firms

US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was accepting luxury travel trips offered by a billionaire Republican for years, as per a report published on Thursday. The gifts included private jet flights across countries and yachting in New Zealand.

Court's longest-serving justice and a staunch conservative, Thomas went on one vacation to Indonesia that alone cost around $500,000, which was paid by real estate tycoon Harlan Crow, revealed a report by ProPublica, a&nbsp;non-profit news outlet.

The investigation of ProPublica was based on reviews of photographs, interviews and other documents, and the&nbsp;legal reform action group Fix the Court after seeing the details said that "the Supreme Court is the least accountable part of our government."

"Nothing is going to change without a wholesale, lawmaker-led reimagining of its responsibilities when it comes to basic measures of oversight," said the group's director Gabe Roth, in a statement.

In 1991, Justice Thomas was nominated for the court after he went through a confirmation process in which he faced an accusation of sexual harassment made by a former aide.

Last year, he joined the majority of judges who gave the historic ruling and overturned the national right to abortion. He also claimed that a conservative-dominated court must examine its rulings on same-sex marriage and contraception.

The New York Daily News, in its report, also claimed that Merchan and his family received threats and quoted a source telling them that “the content of the calls, emails and letters was … harassing and defamatory, with most of the trolls calling from out of state”.

New York office of court administration's spokesperson Lucian Chalfen told the paper, “We continue to evaluate and re-evaluate security concerns and potential threats. We have maintained an increased security presence in and around courthouses and throughout the judiciary and will adjust protocols as necessary.”

Meanwhile, retired conservative judge and former vice-president Mike Pence's adviser, who received national prominence after he gave testimony to the House January 6 committee, J Michael Luttig warned that Trump may receive a gag order over the attacks made by him on Judge Merchan.

A 16-year-old boy from Florida was sentenced to life imprisonment for fatally stabbing his 13-year-old classmate over 100 times on Mother’s Day in 2021.

On Friday, Circuit Judge R Lee Smith handed out the verdict to Aiden Fucci, who had pleaded guilty in February to the first-degree murder of Tristyn Bailey.

Bailey's body was found on May 9, 2021, after her family had reported her missing the previous day. According to the state attorney, she was stabbed 114 times and sustained 49 defensive wounds on her head, hands, and arms.

Fucci was a juvenile when the killing occurred and was not eligible for the death penalty. US media reports said that his sentence can be reviewed after he spends 25 years behind bars.

"This case is probably the most difficult and shocking case that this county, St. Johns County, has dealt with," Judge Lee R Smith said before ordering Fucci to prison for life, according to CBS News.

During the sentencing, Judge Smith said that he factored in several facts while pronouncing his verdict. He said that he took into account Fucci’s young age, the “heightened level” of premeditation, and that he was the “sole participant” who was not pressured by anyone to commit the “devastating crime”.

He noted that Fucci was considered of “average maturity” by his peers and that he understood the consequences of his actions.

Fucci has 30 days to appeal the sentence if he intends to do so, the judge said.

The judge noted that there was no reason for Fucci to murder Bailey, adding that he just had an “internal desire to feel what it was like to kill someone”.

“This was not done out of greed. It was not done in retaliation or retribution or revenge. It was not a crime of passion. It was not a crime that was committed because he felt rejected by her. It was not done in a fit of uncontrollable anger. There was no reason. There was no purpose,” Judge Smith said.

“It was done for no other reason than to satisfy this defendant’s internal desire to feel what it was like to kill someone. This leads this court to the conclusion that there is only one appropriate sentence in this case,” he added.

On January 1, 1951, a petition questioning the decision to shut down the Berhampur Bank was submitted, and on the&nbsp;same day, it was registered as "Case No. 71/1951." Several lawsuits were filed against debtors by Berhampur Bank in an effort to recover lost funds, many of whom filed court documents contesting the bank's claims.

The petition challenging the bank's liquidation was scheduled for two hearings before the HC last September, but no one showed up, according to court records.

Justice Kapur then asked the court's liquidator to provide a report. On September 19, the assistant liquidator notified the court that the matter had been resolved in August 2006. It was found that this was not corrected in the records, which is why the case was still listed as pending.

The case will go on trial on November 7 as a federal judge allowed it but the unified government wants to have the trial moved to Wichita because of extensive publicity in the Kansas City area.

Along with McIntyre, his mother is also seeking a compensation of $30m after she accused the detective of misbehaviour and said that he framed her son for the double homicide in 1994.<o:p></o:p>

She also alleged that the detective abused other women and the pre-trial orders had the initials of 73 women. Golubski, however, denied the allegations and argued that he was a good officer during his career from 1975 through 2010, when he retired, according to his lawyers’ statement.

The government said that even if the allegations against the detective are proven, they are not liable of those actions and it also denies the police chief knew about the alleged misconduct.<o:p></o:p>

For Bilquis, it is a dream come true. "It's been hard work spanning 21 years. It's a dream come true for me. I started my career in 1998 at this very Dal Lake. I represented Jammu and Kashmir for a decade and was a part of the world championships. I thank God for providing me with this opportunity," said Bilquis Mir, Director of Water Sports, Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;

"I had to struggle a lot, and I reached this stage after hard work. I am delighted that I am making my UT as well as my country proud. I am a Kashmiri girl who started from Dal Lake and now has reached a stage to judge Asian games to be held in China," said Bilquis.

When Bilquis started her sports career, there were very few women from Jammu and Kashmir who were playing for the state. She paved the way for many girls to take up sports.

"I had a dream of becoming a judge at an international sports event, as I saw a very small number of girls at these events. I always see men in those teams, and I promised myself that I would be in the decision-making team for these events. If there is any big event after the Olympics, it's the Asian Games. I am extremely happy about this, "said Bilquis.

Water sports in the valley have gained a lot of popularity in the last three years. Bilquis has worked day and night to popularise the sport, and with the help of the government, she has been able to establish water sports centres across the Union territory.

The government wants to make water sports and winter sports the main sports in the union territory.&nbsp;

"In the last three years, there has been a revolution in water sports in Jammu and Kashmir. It gained a fresh impetus because of the PM’s attention. We were able to create a centre with new equipment and finally pave the way for water sports," Bliquis said.

"The government of India and the government of Jammu and Kashmir took various steps. We are very blessed with natural water resources and because of that, we can lead in all these sports. This year, during the winter, we were able to continue training sessions due to new equipment. We have all the equipment that countries like Germany, Hungary, and other nations have, "she said.

The water sports department has been working with many children who can represent the country at various international gaming events.&nbsp;

"They have asked me to convey their strong conviction that women should not feel ashamed to pursue financial settlements in sexual harassment cases because sexual harassment will only start to recede when there is a clear recognition that it has a substantial cost to organisations and individuals who are implicated," he said in a statement.

The Australian government has agreed to pay "an historic settlement" to three women who accused a former top justice of sexual harassment, lawyers for the trio said Monday.

Rachael Patterson Collins, Chelsea Tabart and Alex Eggerking all worked as associates at the High Court of Australia, where they alleged they were sexually harassed by Dyson Heydon, then a justice.

The Attorney-General's Department confirmed the deal, which followed a High Court internal inquiry that upheld the women's claims against Heydon, and those of three other women who had also worked at the court.

In June 2020, the High Court apologised to all six women, with current Chief Justice Susan Kiefel saying, "We are ashamed that this could have happened at the High Court of Australia."

Patterson Collins, Tabart and Eggerking entered into negotiations with the federal government shortly after that apology.

Wife of Qazi Faez Isa, senior judge of Pakistan Supreme Court wrote a letter to Sindh and federal governments saying she was harassed by some people who barged into her house on December 29. As reported by The News, Serena Isa said that abuses were hurled at her.

Sarina Isa stated that she was looking after the white-wash process at her Defence residence in Karachi along with her daughter when two unidentified persons entered their house, harassed her, hurled threats and sought personal and family information from her.

She said that after some time, two more such persons came there and threatened them. After they left the place, two more persons entered her residence and asked various questions in a threatening tone.

She said all those people said they were government department’s personnel. In her three-page letter, she demanded the government hold an inquiry into the incident, the report said.

As per Dawn, the letter has been addressed to Sindh inspector general of police, defence ministry secretary, interior ministry secretary and Sindh home department secretary.

In her letter, Sarina Isa said that the men claimed to be from military intelligence. But when she asked for their ID cards, they refused to provide. As per Sarina, the men did not have any written authorisation that permitted them to enter the house.

49-year-old Kripal&nbsp;has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights in India. He was the lawyer for Navtej Singh Johar and Ritu Dalmia, the two petitioners who fought against the removal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality.

It was in this landmark case&nbsp;that the Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality in India in 2018.

However, this is not the first time that he was recommended for the judge post. Earlier in 2017, the intelligence officials were tasked to carry out mandatory background check on him after his name was recommended.

But his elevation was deferred after the officials came out with an adverse report in 2018 and 2019, suggesting Kirpal’s partner, who is a foreign national, might pose a security risk.

In March 2021, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bobde, writing to the Union government, sought additional information and more clarity on its reservations over his elevation.

But the government reiterated its apprehensions against his partner in April.

Later that time, Kirpal was designated as a senior advocate by the Delhi high court after all 31 judges of the high court unanimously endorsed his designation.

Following the recommendations by the judges of Delhi high court, the current CJI justice Ramana and the four other most senior judges of the collegium, after consulting the other judges in the top court, decided to send Kirpal’s name for appointment as a judge in the Delhi high court.
