England were in complete control until half-time, but lost their way after the interval and needed key saves from Jordan Pickford to hold on in their Group C opener.

But Southgate was adamant England could take pride from the way they kept Serbia at bay.

"We had to suffer a bit which I think is really good for us. To defend the box the way we did was really good for us," he said. "I was really pleased with a lot of the play. Second half we didn't keep it as well as I would have liked but to get the win is very important.

"Pleased we had to show a different side and show a resilience to defend our box because as a group that builds a spirit. We defended very well as a unit."

Alexander-Arnold was caught in possession at times, but Southgate praised his contribution to Bellingham's man of the match display.

"I was really pleased. Jude has such a prominent role and Trent had to cover a lot of spaces. It's not a role he's done a lot at all," he said. "He showed great discipline, fabulous passing range he has, we're learning with him in this role but he showed some of the attributes he can bring. It's great to see him come through that test."

Real Madrid midfield Jude Bellingham has hit back at the Spanish&nbsp;Football Federation (RFEF) for imposing a two-match ban on him for dissent during the La Liga match against Valencia over the weekend.&nbsp;

After the UEFA Champions League match against RB Leipzig on Wednesday (Mar 6), Bellingham termed the suspension as "ridiculous".&nbsp;

"I didn't say anything offensive, I didn't say anything different to what my team-mates said and I think that sometimes because I'm new they want to make an example of me," said Bellingham.&nbsp;

"In the end I have to be responsible for my actions and I'm not proud, but I think two matches for that is a bit ridiculous, but if it's two matches I have to take my responsibility and I'll cheer from the stands," he added.&nbsp;

Apart from the ban, the English player was fined&nbsp;$652 (£513) while Madrid was asked to fork out&nbsp; $760&nbsp;(£598).&nbsp;

Bellingham was handed the punishment despite Madrid appealing the red card. RFEF in its statement said Bellingham showed&nbsp;"contempt or&nbsp;disregard" towards referee&nbsp;Gil Manzano when Madrid players and staff surrounded him.

Jude Bellingham has been ruled out of England's final Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, the Football Association announced on Tuesday (Nov 14).

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has also been withdrawn from Gareth Southgate's squad, meaning five players are missing from the initial group announced for the match at Wembley on November 17 and the away fixture three days later.

Midfielder Bellingham, 20, who has scored 13 goals so far in a stunning debut season for Real Madrid, and Colwill both have shoulder issues.

Defender Antonio Rudiger currently wears the number 22, which Bellingham has preferred to date through his career, as it is the sum of shirt numbers 10, eight and four, representing his versatility in midfield and wide skill-set.

"I've said in many interviews how much I admire Zinedine Zidane, the legacy he's had at the club with this number -- I'm just trying to be Jude, but it's definitely a bit of a homage to how great he was," Bellingham told a news conference.

"The number 22 has a big meaning for me, and in my heart I'm still number 22, just with the number 5 on my back."

Bellingham said wearing Zidane's previous shirt did not mean he was trying to emulate the French midfield maestro, who went on to win three Champions Leagues as Real Madrid's manager.

"The (Madrid) shirt itself is enough pressure ... for me it's a bit of homage to a great player," said Bellingham.

"Maybe I can extend the legacy of the number, instead of trying to reach his."&nbsp;

Bellingham has plenty of other reference points still at the club to learn from, including veteran midfielders Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

"The things I'll gain especially from the two older lads, Modric and Kroos, will be unbelievable, with their knowledge of the game," said Bellingham.

"I'll be like a sponge around them, trying to steal anything they've got. They'll probably get annoyed with me."

The England international, who shone at the Qatar World Cup last winter, broke through as a 16-year-old at Birmingham City, who retired his shirt number after he moved to Dortmund in 2020 for 25 million euros.&nbsp;

Bellingham said he had other options on the table but quickly decided Real Madrid was his best option.

"I'd always been aware of the interest from England, that's pretty normal, but it was a bit of a surprise when my dad sat me down and told me, 12 to 15 months ago that you've had a bit of interest from Real Madrid," said the midfielder.

"I had goosebumps, my heart was close to stopping. When that manifests itself it's such an amazing feeling."

Bellingham, who turns 20 in June, was named the player of the season in the Bundesliga as he led Dortmund to the verge of the title, although they were pipped by giants Bayern Munich on the final day of the season.

The player said both learning and winning trophies was his aim at Real Madrid, and brushed off questions about his large transfer fee.

"It doesn't matter how much you come here for, the objective is the same, to help Real Madrid win trophies and keep being the biggest club in the world," said Bellingham.&nbsp;

"I'm a footballer, not a lawyer or an accountant, my job is to play on the pitch."

He will be in Madrid On Thursday before he links with the national squad for the Euro 2024 Qualifiers.

In 132 appearances for the German side, Bellingham has scored 24 goals and will form a midfield partnership with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The former Birmingham City star was signed in 2020 by Dortmund and also made his debut for the national side while playing in Germany.

The 14-time European champions had a disappointing outing in 2023 where they only won the Copa del Rey and lost to Manchester City in the semifinal of the Champions League. Madrid made the 19-year-old one of the most expensive players of all time with a 103 million euro ($110 million) deal, which could rise by up to 30 percent more.

Bellingham burst onto the biggest stage at the Qatar World Cup in 2022, driving England into the quarter-finals, where they were narrowly ousted by eventual runners-up France.

The midfielder, who turns 20 later in June, brought grace and balance to the Three Lions, with tireless energy to contribute at both ends of the pitch and maturity beyond his years.

That cool head helped him become Dortmund's youngest captain when he took the armband last October, and he took them to the brink of a rare title.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic has called Bellingham "the oldest 19-year-old in the world" and was taken aback by his unfluctuating level of performance.

"It is extraordinary to be able to play football so consistently at that age," said Terzic.

Bellingham scored eight goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances this season and was named the German top flight's player of the season in May, two days after his team missed out on the title in the final game of the season.

The Englishman was an unused substitute in the 2-2 draw with Mainz after sustaining a knee injury, watching on with frustration as his team failed to earn the victory which would have clinched their first title since 2012.

Bellingham began his career at Birmingham City, coming through the youth ranks and helping them avoid relegation from the Championship in his one first-team campaign at the club, 2019-20.

Conor Coady, the England’s defender shared what exactly happened when Jude opened up about this to everyone.

"Hendo looks after Jude like there is no tomorrow," Coady said. "The other day he [Bellingham] said something about his mum making his bed.
