Ollie Robinson claimed his 100th Test wicket as Pakistan collapsed to 100/7 in the opening session on day one of the third Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Pakistan made several changes, naming three debutants in their playing XI for this Test, but failed to alter their fate. England, despite a poor show with the bat, made sure they got over the line and clinched the contest to break the duck in the series. An opening stand of 51 runs between Zak Crawley (37) and Ben Duckett (34) saw England take early comfort before losing quick-fire wickets. Jacob Bethell then added 40 runs to the tally before Joe Root (15) and Harry Brook (unbeaten 18) saw the visitors through to win by four wickets. What happened earlier? Having won the toss, England’s decision to bowl first proved crucial as they reduced Australia to 152 runs in the first innings. However, it was not a good day at the office for England as they were also bowled out on the opening day for 110. Australia, therefore, entered Day 2 with a 46-run lead (42 runs in the first innings). Like the first innings, another batting horror followed for the Baggy Greens, who were later bowled out for 132 runs. Only three batters got into double figures as Travis Head top-scored with 46, while Steve Smith amassed 24 and Cameron Green scored 19. ALSO READ | From Steve Smith to Joe Root, 5 active batters with most runs in Ashes For England, Brydon Carse got four wickets, followed by Ben Stokes with three on a perfect bowling day for the visitors. Josh Tongue added two wickets to his five from the first innings, while there was one wicket for Gus Atkinson, who later pulled up his hamstring.

Playing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the traditional year-ending fixture, England's four-wicket victory ended their almost 15-year winless streak on Australian soil in red-ball format.

Ashes: Bowlers run riot on Boxing Day as Australia take rare first innings lead on Day 1

It was a poor start for hosts Australia on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test. English bowlers were on song in the first session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Having opted to bowl first after winning the toss, the decision by Ben Stokes proved right as Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson enjoyed their outing by breaking the back of Australia’s batting order. However, it was the wicket of Australia’s stand-in skipper Steve Smith that caught the eye, which was the highlight reel at Tea on Day 1.

England likely to start home summer without Josh Tongue as plans to replace retiring James Anderson stumble

England were landed a soft blow in their preparations for their upcoming West Indies tour with star speedster Josh Tongue ruled out with an injury. Tongue, impressive in the only Test match against Ireland at Lord’s and then in the Ashes, was tipped for a white-ball cricket debut, but those plans were thrown out of the window after an injury suffered in training on Thursday during the team’s camp in Abu Dhabi. Matthew Potts has been roped in as a replacement for Tongue for the ODIs with no confirmation on whether he will be available for the T20I series.

Injury setback for Tongue

After a disappointing show at the World Cup, England's selector panel led by Luke Wright is firm on focusing on the youth. As a result, Tongue was in line for his ODI debut for England during the West Indies tour with several big stars missing out. He was called into the squad along with fellow uncapped players Ollie Pope and John Turner, with the former also serving as vice-captain in the Test format.

While the extent of the injury remains unknown, Tongue could still return to the squad to face the West Indies during the T20I series which starts on December 12. He will be a vital part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming five-match Test series against India in February. With Stuart Broad’s retirement and James Anderson at the twilight of his career, Tongue along with Chris Woakes and Mark Wood form the backbone of the English bowling unit.

Tongue was offered a two-year deal by the English Cricket Board (ECB) as part of the central contract that sees him being an important part of the near future. His replacement Matthew Potts was also offered a lucrative deal by the ECB and he too is part of the plans.

Only six players from the World Cup squads made it to the West Indies tour with Dawid Malan being the biggest miss. He is predicted to have been done with the national side as the selectors are now focusing on grooming the next generation.

ODI squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Ollie Pope, Phil Salt, Matthew Potts, John Turner.

T20I squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Tymal Mills, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Reece Topley, John Turner, Chris Woakes.

England tour of West Indies: Injury delays Josh Tongue's white-ball debut, Matthew Potts roped in

England cricket team’s preparations have suffered a major setback as star bowler Josh Tongue has suffered an undisclosed injury that has seen him ruled out of the T20I series against New Zealand. Tongue, hopeful for a debut in the New Zealand series has joined John Turner on the casualty list as they miss out on the shortest format of the game. Chris Jordan has been drafted in as a replacement for Tongue as he continues his recovery.

Josh Tongue misses out

"The T20 squad has been picked with a view to having a look at a few other guys. England's white-ball captain. That's been communicated [to Mills and Jordan] as well. We want to try and broaden that talent pool and expose some people to international cricket to see where they're at,” said England captain Jos Buttler.

Tongue had a promising start to his international career when he made his debut in the Test setup. He featured in the only Test against Ireland in June while also earning a surprise call-up to the Lord’s Test against Australia in the Ashes 2023. He has 10 wickets in two matches for the national team and his impressive spell in the Test and The Hundred saw him in the reckoning for the T20I set-up.

"Death bowling is obviously a big focus in short-form cricket and we want to see where certain people are at, and give them a chance. Of course, no one's ever ruled out, but in terms of needing extra motivation, every player should always be motivated in my eyes."

The injury comes at the wrong time for the talented bowler as it will keep him away from The Hundred’s Eliminator clash against Southern Brave for Manchester Originals. He had an impressive stint with the team in The Hundred but now faces time out before he can feature.

ODI World Cup plans

Although the signs have been encouraging for Tongue, he is unlikely to make the ODI World Cup squad. The selectors panel led by former all-rounder Luke Wright has shown faith in Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, and Chris Woakes. They have opted not to pick up Jofra Archer for the New Zealand series, which is a prime indicator that England are focusing on the future.

Pacer Josh Tongue, who made his international debut in the ongoing Test against Ireland, is picked alongside Ollie Robinson. Premier pacer Mark Wood also returns to the 16-man squad. With Anderson and Robinson recovering from respective injuries, their inclusion in the squad comes as a boost for the hosts. Chris Woakes, who missed the Ireland Test to spend some family time with his family following the birth of his second-born child, will be a crucial addition to Stokes’ star-studded bowling setup. Stuart Broad and left-arm spinner Jack Leach are also part of the squad.
