Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho says Fulham have little reason to complain about being told to play a Premier League game at short notice as his opposite number Scott Parker called the scheduling "scandalous".

Spurs had been due to play Aston Villa on Wednesday, but a coronavirus outbreak at the Midlands club forced a postponement on Monday.

The Premier League acted quickly to put Spurs' match with the Cottagers into the vacant slot after the original fixture was postponed with three hours' notice on December 30 due to a Covid-19 outbreak in Parker's squad.

The Fulham boss criticised the decision, with their game against Chelsea scheduled for Friday also put back 24 hours.

But Mourinho, who had feared a crippling fixture pile-up for Tottenham, offered little sympathy given the short notice of the original game's postponement.

Asked whether Fulham had a right to be upset, Mourinho said on Tuesday: "Are you serious? They had 48 hours to prepare for this game. You think so? I had the news I was not going to play them two hours before the game started."

"The biggest impact is to have matches postponed," he added. "That is the biggest impact.&nbsp;

"The changing of the order of the matches, the impact is minimal because in the end you have to play 19 matches at home and away, you have to play two matches against every team.

"So if it's to help the Premier League to go and to end properly, I think it is a solution we all have to accept as a positive solution."

Parker, who played under Mourinho when the Portuguese was in charge at Chelsea, was furious with the decision.

"I am normally the last one to moan or whine," he said. "To confirm a Premier League game at 09:30 on Monday morning is scandalous."

Parker, whose side are third from bottom of the table, said league chiefs had no idea what it took to prepare for a particular opponent.

"It's not about the fixture," he said. "I accept we have to play but it's the notice. The people making these decisions don't understand."

Mourinho has no sympathy for Fulham over fixture switch

Jose Mourinho said Tottenham's lack of attacking intent was not inspired by him after dropping more points from a winning position in a 1-1 draw at Wolves on Sunday.

Spurs have now failed to win in four consecutive league games to heavily dent their hopes of a first league title in 60 years.

Mourinho's men edge up to fifth, but remain six points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Tottenham have dropped eight points by conceding equalisers in the final 10 minutes this season after also blowing leads against Newcastle, West Ham and Crystal Palace. They also conceded a 90th-minute goal to lose at Liverpool.

The visitors made a dream start at Molineux as Tanguy Ndombele opened the scoring in the first minute.

But it was a familiar story for Mourinho as, just as against Palace a fortnight ago, they sat on a precarious 1-0 lead for most of the match and were punished.

"We didn't have that ambition, that desire to go for more," said Mourinho.

"One point against Wolves normally wouldn't be a bad result because they are a strong opponent, but scoring a goal in the first minute and having 89 minutes to score more goals, you feel frustrated.

"Defending deep, that's not the intention. They know what I asked them at half-time, if they couldn't do better it's because they couldn't do better."

Romain Saiss's late leveller was no less than Wolves deserved as they dominated after a nightmare start.

"We conceded in the first minute and that requires a lot of character," said Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo. "We played a good game after that."

The normally reliable Rui Patricio was at fault for the opener as Ndombele's shot from the edge of the box deceived the Portuguese international goalkeeper.

Wolves have struggled for goals since losing Raul Jimenez to a fractured skull last month.

The Mexican was at Molineux for the first time since his injury, but his presence was missed on the field as the hosts dominated possession without a cutting edge.

Fabio Silva flashed a shot into the side-netting and Daniel Podence fired too close to Hugo Lloris from the edge of box before the break.

Espirito Santo's men have made a habit of scoring the bulk of their goals in the second-half and looked like the only side capable of scoring after the break.

Silva's claims for a soft penalty were waved away as Tottenham largely restricted the hosts to potshots from range.

Ruben Neves curled narrowly over before Wolves' danger man Pedro Neto saw another effort from the edge of the area deflected just wide.

Neto was the provider when Wolves did score the goal their second-half performance deserved. Saiss beat his marker to a corner at the near post and flicked the ball into the far corner.

Wolves should even have gone on to win the game when 18-year-old Silva wasted a golden chance for his first Premier League goal from open play with a header straight at Lloris deep into stoppage time.

Mourinho bemoans Spurs' lack of ambition in Wolves draw

Chelsea`s Women`s Super League game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday has been called off due to COVID-19 cases in their team, both clubs said on Saturday.

Chelsea were scheduled to host London rivals Spurs at the Kingsmeadow stadium on Sunday at 1400 GMT.

"The decision was agreed between both teams and the FA after a number of positive tests for COVID-19 were returned within the Chelsea FC Women`s team set-up after the last round of testing," the west London club said in a statement https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2020/12/19/tottenham-hotspur-wsl-match-postponed.

"Those affected immediately began a period of self-isolation in accordance with Public Health England and Government guidelines."

Chelsea are second in the league with 20 points after eight games, three points behind leaders Manchester United but with a game in hand, while Spurs are eighth with nine points from nine.

Earlier, West Ham United`s home game against Aston Villa on Sunday was also called off due to "a small number" of positive COVID-19 cases at their training ground.

Chelsea v Spurs WSL game postponed due to COVID-19 cases

Jose Mourinho said Tottenham must learn to kill games off if they are to win a first league title in 60 years after Roberto Firmino's late winner earned Liverpool a 2-1 win over his side on Wednesday.

The Brazilian's towering header ended an 11-game unbeaten league run for Mourinho's men and opened up a three-point lead for the defending champions at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool enjoyed 76 percent possession and had 11 shots on target to Tottenham's two, but Mourinho still believed Spurs would have been deserving winners had they taken their chances early in the second half.

Steven Bergwijn hit the post and Harry Kane uncharacteristically headed a huge opportunity over at 1-1.

"We were so close to a win, not so close to a draw," said Mourinho, who had an exchange of words with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at full-time.

"A draw would be a bad result in relation to the performance, so you can imagine how we feel with the defeat.

"Of course they had more of the ball but when we had it, we knew how to hurt them. We have to score -- the second, third goal, we have to score it to kill the game.

"In matches like these where you don't have 10 chances, just three or four, you have to score three and kill it, which we didn't."

Liverpool are now 66 games unbeaten in the league at Anfield and showed why they remain the favourites in a wide-open title race with their ability to consistently win tight games late on.

"Completely deserved," said Klopp of his side's victory.&nbsp;"A really good game against a top side, a counter-attacking monster.

"You lose one ball and you end up with an 80 percent possibility in your own box so you have to really concentrate."

<h2>- Houllier tributes -</h2>

Before kick-off, the Liverpool support, players and officials paid their respects to former manager Gerard Houllier, who died earlier this week at 73.

Unusually kicking towards 2,000 fans in the Kop in the first half, Liverpool made a storming start as they swarmed over Spurs and could count themselves unfortunate not to have been out of sight by half-time.

Liverpool earned their luck for the opening goal when Mohamed Salah's shot took a huge deflection off Toby Alderweireld and looped beyond the helpless Hugo Lloris in off the far post.

Curtis Jones should have done better with a big chance to double the home side's advantage moments later as Lloris was again well-positioned to make a comfortable save.

But the moment Tottenham had been waiting for to launch the counter-attack that has thrust them into title contention, beating Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal in recent weeks, arrived on 33 minutes.

Giovani Lo Celso's brilliant pass opened up a makeshift Liverpool backline with 19-year-old Rhys Williams partnering midfielder Fabinho in central defence.

Son Heung-min timed his run to perfection to stay onside and coolly slotted past Alisson Becker for his 14th goal of the season.

Having weathered the storm, Spurs went on to enjoy the far better chances early in the second half.

Bergwijn prodded wide from a narrow angle after Williams showed his inexperience by getting caught under a simple ball down the middle.

The Dutch international had an even better sight of goal just after the hour mark when he hit the base of the post when clean through and from the resulting corner, Kane headed a glorious chance over.

Liverpool continued to enjoy more possession and nearly unpicked the lock of the Tottenham defence when Sadio Mane spun Serge Aurier and crashed a rising shot off the bar.

But Mourinho will be bitterly disappointed that his side were eventually undone by a set-piece as from Andy Robertson's corner, Firmino rose highest to silence the critics of his goal record with what could be one of the most important all season.

United needed a draw to qualify for the last 16 but were punished for a sloppy start and slumped to a 3-2 defeat, a result that left them third in the group to ensure they drop down to Europe's second-tier competition.

"The teams that drop from the Champions League are strong and normally don't belong to the level of the Europa League," Mourinho, who guided United to the Europa League trophy in 2017, told reporters ahead of Thursday's home game against Antwerp.

"United are one of the top teams. The group was very hard with Paris St Germain and Leipzig. We knew it was not going to be easy for any of them."

Mourinho went on to condemn the incident that took place during the PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir match. The match was suspended in the 13th minute when fourth official Sebastian Coltescu was accused of directing a racist term towards the Turkish club's assistant coach.

"Every form of racism has to be fought and never accepted," he said. "To be involved, indirectly, not directly in the game that will become quite iconic is not a nice thing. The fourth official only he can express his feelings.

"Of course, he made an unacceptable mistake but only he can open his heart, apologise and accept the consequences."

Chelsea's heavy spending in transfer window has put pressure on Lampard: Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho takes his table-topping Tottenham side to former club Chelsea this weekend determined to prove he is back where he belongs at the top of the Premier League.

Four straight wins have taken Spurs to 20 points after nine games, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, but Frank Lampard's Chelsea are just two points behind them.

Champions Liverpool travel to Brighton, while goal-shy Manchester City host Burnley in the unaccustomed position of 13th in the table and Arsenal seek&nbsp;a win to lift them out of their slump.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the weekend action in the Premier League.

<h2>Mourinho has point to prove</h2>

Spurs boss Mourinho has a point to prove against Lampard, with whom he won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho and the former Chelsea midfielder-turned-manager have met four times in different dugouts.

Lampard gave Mourinho a bloody nose when his Derby side dumped Manchester United, then managed by the Mourinho, out of the League Cup on penalties in 2018.

After returning to Chelsea as manager, Lampard twice outwitted his former boss, by now in charge at Tottenham, in the Premier League last season.

The 57-year-old veteran will be hoping this season's League Cup win against Chelsea on penalties has turned the tide. He has never lost three consecutive league matches against the same manager or club before.

Mourinho was keen to play down title talk after last week's impressive 2-0 win at home to Manchester City, which took them top.

"People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title," he told the BBC.&nbsp;

"We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches."

But, like it or not, Spurs&nbsp;are in the title mix and will have to get used to the pressure, which will be ramped up on Sunday.

<h2>Can Arteta stop the rot?</h2>

Arsenal's indifferent start to the season has left them languishing 12th in the Premier League table, with just four points from their past five matches.&nbsp;

Mikel Arteta, whose side host Wolves on Sunday, remains optimistic despite his side's poor run and struggles in front of goal -- Arsenal have now not scored from open play in five Premier League games.

"When I see the young talents we have got here and the future that we can produce for them, it's things that get me really excited," he said.

"We know that we are going to go through difficult periods because you don't change issues that have been going on for years in a small amount of time."

Fans have been patient so far with their manager, who arrived late last year, but will start to get edgy unless they see an upturn in results soon.

<h2>City search for goals</h2>

Manchester City, who host Burnley on Saturday, have not scored more than once in a Premier League match since September.

It was the same old story last weekend. City had 22 shots in their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham, who mustered just four shots, with two on target.

The club's record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero, had a brief runout in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Olympiakos as he makes his way back to fitness following a hamstring injury.

City boss Guardiola said this week he was being cautious with the Argentine striker.

"We have many, many games to play this season and we'll need him," he said. "What we want is him to recover in his best condition."

But it is a difficult balancing act for the manager, whose side are already eight points behind Spurs and Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho takes his table-topping Tottenham side to former club Chelsea this weekend determined to prove he is back where he belongs at the top of the Premier League.

Champions Liverpool travel to Brighton, while goal-shy Manchester City host Burnley in the unaccustomed position of 13th in the table and Arsenal seek a win to lift them out of their slump. AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the weekend action in the Premier League. Mourinho has point to prove Spurs boss Mourinho has a point to prove against Lampard, with whom he won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge. "People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title," he told the BBC. "We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches." But, like it or not, Spurs are in the title mix and will have to get used to the pressure, which will be ramped up on Sunday. Can Arteta stop the rot? Arsenal's indifferent start to the season has left them languishing 12th in the Premier League table, with just four points from their past five matches. "We know that we are going to go through difficult periods because you don't change issues that have been going on for years in a small amount of time." Fans have been patient so far with their manager, who arrived late last year, but will start to get edgy unless they see an upturn in results soon. City search for goals Manchester City, who host Burnley on Saturday, have not scored more than once in a Premier League match since September. It was the same old story last weekend. City had 22 shots in their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham, who mustered just four shots, with two on target. 'We have to adapt': Jose Mourinho to Jurgen Klopp over hectic schedule

Tottenham Hotspur moved top of the Premier League after an impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City while Chelsea beat Newcastle United and Manchester United secured their first home win of the campaign on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs, unbeaten in their last eight games, have 20 points from nine matches while Frank Lampard's Chelsea are on 18 points after their 2-0 win at Newcastle.

Third-placed Leicester City (18 points) are at fourth-placed Liverpool (17 points) on Sunday and would go back to the top with a win at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola's City slipped to 11th with United's victory moving them above their local rivals to ninth.

Spurs now fully look like a Mourinho team, solid at the back, hard-working in midfield and deadly on the break and that was enough to beat a City team who have managed just 10 goals in nine games.

Son Heung-min's prolific form continued, the South Korean opening the scoring in the fifth minute with his ninth goal of the season.

A beautifully weighted pass from Tanguy Ndombele picked out Son's perfectly timed run and the striker kept his cool to slip the ball through the legs of the advancing Ederson.

Harry Kane for Spurs and Aymeric Laporte for City both had goals disallowed before substitute Giovani lo Celso settled the match just 35 seconds after coming off the bench.

While Mourinho will have been delighted to have put one over on Guardiola, who he jousted with during his time in Spain when he coached Real Madrid and his rival was in charge of Barcelona, he wasn't getting carried away by the table.

"We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match," said the Portuguese coach.

THIRD WIN

At St James' Park an own goal by Federico Fernandez and Tammy Abraham’s second-half effort secured a third straight win for Chelsea.

The Blues took the lead in the 10th minute when Fernandez, under pressure from Ben Chilwell, turned in Mason Mount’s cross.

Isaac Hayden wasted a great chance to equalise on the hour but Timo Werner burst through on goal before passing to Abraham to double Chelsea’s lead.

"We put the game away with a professional performance," Lampard said. "The result is key because the Premier League is tough and relentless."

A twice-taken penalty from Bruno Fernandes gave United a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, their first Premier League win at Old Trafford this season.

Fernandes’s first effort was saved by West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone but the referee ordered the kick be re-taken after ruling the keeper had come off his line and the Portuguese midfielder made no mistake with the second attempt.

Winless West Brom’s frustration was doubled by the fact that the penalty came eight minutes after they had a spot-kick award overturned after review.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion won at Aston Villa for the first time with an enthralling 2-1 victory.

Solly March grabbed the winner with a lovely finish after Ezri Konsa’s equaliser had cancelled out Danny Welbeck's first goal for Brighton, a clever chip.

There was late drama, however, when Brighton full back Tariq Lamptey was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time and Villa had a penalty overturned after the referee rescinded his decision having viewed the monitor.

Premier League: Spurs go top, Chelsea keep pace, United move above City

Tottenham Hotspurs manager Jose Mourinho has said that the experience he gained due to his previous coaching stints with other clubs should be reflected in a new name for himself: 'The Experienced One'.

In 2004, Jose Mourinho called himself 'A Special One' when he entered the Premier League as a Chelsea manager. After a successful stint with the Blues, Jose went on to manage Inter Milan and Real Madrid followed by a second stint with Chelsea before taking over at Manchester United and then Spurs.

Asked how he would describe himself, Mourinho told Tencent Sports in an interview: "The 'Experienced One.' I am very experienced. Basically everything that happens to me in football now is deja vu, is something that has happened to me before.

"There are jobs that you need a special fitness condition like a football player. A 40-year-old does not have the same potential like a 20-or 30-year old, unless you're (AC Milan's Swedish striker) Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho calls himself 'The Experienced One' after several stints

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is unhappy that Gareth Bale's return to the Wales squad next week will be partly overseen by a coach at North London rivals Arsenal.

Wales boss Ryan Giggs is not taking charge of games against the United States, Ireland and Finland later this month after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend.

The former Manchester United star denies all allegations against him, but "mutually agreed" with the Football Association of Wales to sit out the upcoming matches.

Robert Page will take temporary charge with Albert Stuivenberg, who is also on Mikel Arteta's staff at Arsenal, acting as assistant manager.

"The fact that one of the coaches is an Arsenal coach does not make me very comfortable," said Mourinho. "National team matches should have coaches that work exclusively for them, not coaches who work for other clubs."

Bale is edging closer to full fitness after an injury-hit start to his second spell at Spurs.

He scored his first goal since returning on loan from Real Madrid in the 2-1 win against Brighton last weekend, but is yet to complete 90 minutes this season.

"It's about managing the situation and keeping him safe, because he's a player that needs to be safe, he's a player that had enough problems in the past," said Mourinho.

"He's working so much and we're all working so carefully with him that we don't want to destroy the work everybody is doing for the last couple of months."

Last month Mourinho put pressure on England manager Gareth Southgate not to play Harry Kane in a friendly against Wales.

And he repeated the call for Bale to miss the friendly against the USA to prioritise the Nations League clashes with Ireland and Finland.

"Wales has two matches where they play for the Nations League and I expect him to play," said Mourinho. "But if they care as much about him as we do, they have to manage the recovery period.

"They have to manage how many days' difference between one match and another. They have to manage the minutes that he plays and they should not let him get to fatigue levels."

Mourinho uneasy with Arsenal coach managing Bale

Jose Mourinho has insisted Harry Kane did nothing wrong after the England forward was criticised for how he won a penalty in Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 win over Brighton in the Premier League last weekend.

Kane appeared to draw a foul from Adam Lallana to win the spot-kick, which he then converted to open the scoring at home to the Seagulls.

Mourinho, during his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League tie away to Ludogorets, was adamant any fault lay with Lallana.

"Harry Kane was in a position to control the ball and Lallana came in a reckless fashion. Why are you saying it is clever?" Mourinho said. "Clever is taking the ball and scoring a goal. It's a foul."

The experienced Portuguese boss added: "I thought it was a direct free-kick but VAR said it was inside the box because it was on the line. What are we talking about being clever?

"Harry Kane just wants to score goals. Lallana was reckless.

"Why are you speaking about us? Speak about Liverpool, Manchester United, City and others with 'clever' players and getting penalties. Don't speak about Harry Kane."

Tottenham will be without Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier for the trip to Bulgaria after the trio missed training on Wednesday.

"Reguilon is ill but not Covid, just ill," said Mourinho. "Lamela was having a little problem for quite a few weeks and we decided it was the time to stop.

"Aurier has a little problem, nothing important."

Tottenham Hotspur's Jose Mourinho has downplayed the hype created after Bale's return to the English club after seven years. According to the Portuguese manager, Bale cannot be the same explosive player who left the Premier League club to join Real Madrid seven years ago.

Bale has featured for three games in all competitions this season, including Thursday's 1-0 Europa League defeat by Belgian league leaders Royal Antwerp. He has not played any major role in these matches despite Mourinho's statement that the Welshman was ready to "fly".&nbsp;

However, Mourinho said: "Seven years is a long gap, so which player in the world is the same as he was seven years ago? Sometimes they're not better or worse, just different players."
&nbsp;
"You look for example to (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Lionel) Messi and compare them with seven years ago. They play in different areas, different positions.

"They transform their qualities, try to explore their qualities in other responsibilities on the tactical system of their teams. I think it happens with the majority of the players. So for sure he's a different player.

Mourinho backed Bale to regain his best form with more minutes under his belt.

"Every word I said on Wednesday I believe, because he's working hard, he's improving, he doesn't have one single injury since he recovered from the last one," Mourinho added.

"He didn't miss a single minute of any training session. To play 90 minutes is still hard, to play high intensity is still difficult, but he's improving and hopefully he'll be back to a better level soon."

Tottenham Hotspurs boss Jose Mourinho was left fuming after a disappointing loss in the Europa League against Royal Antwerp on Thursday. The London-based club was beaten 1-0.&nbsp;

The Portuguese manager made nine changes to the lineup from Monday’s 1-0 Premier League win at Burnley. However, an error from defender Ben Davies allowed Antwerp forward Lior Refaelov to score and take lead within the first 30 minutes.

Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani lo Celso and Carlos Vinicius were all replaced at halftime but Spurs were unable to get back on level terms. It was their first defeat since losing 1-0 to Everton on the Premier League’s opening weekend in September.

“I would like to have made 11 changes at halftime,” Mourinho told reporters. “I didn’t make five as I was afraid of a long 45 minutes.

“I always like to think the players deserve an opportunity. We have a big squad with lots of good players,” he added.

“It’s my responsibility to give them opportunities but it’s also their opportunity to catch the chance with both hands and ask for more.

“Tonight shows my future choices are going to be very easy.”

Welsh star Gareth Bale might not have pace the way he had six year's ago, but the player can make up for it with his improved passing range, the Premier League club's former manager Glenn Hoddle said. Last month, Tottenham star Bale returned to London from Madrid on a year-long loan spell and is set to make his debut for the club against West Ham United on Sunday. Also read: Manchester United extend Paul Pogba's contract after triggering clause Hoddle, the Spurs boss from 2001-03, said current manager Jose Mourinho could tweak his formation to get the best out of Bale in a more creative role. "Mourinho might go to three at the back... and ensure his team are dangerous on the counter. Gareth might not be that box-to-box player he was five or six years ago, when he was all about using his pace," Hoddle said in a podcast. "Now, he might be as much a creator if he's played deeper or drops deeper, much the way Harry Kane did when he provided all four goals for Son (Heung-min) at Southampton recently. I can see Bale doing that for Kane. "I think Bale has the sensational ability to pass, he's not just a 'runner' at defenders, I can see him as the creator maybe the team are lacking. Gareth's always been one that has got that ability to pass the ball as well, he can play with his head up." Mourinho could use a creative position for Tottenham star Bale: Glenn Hoddle

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho took a swipe at Gareth Southgate on Thursday as he called the England manager 'Gary' and questioned his plans for Harry Kane.

Mourinho does not think Tottenham striker Kane should be involved in all three of England's forthcoming friendly against Wales and Nations League fixtures with Belgium and Denmark.

After a gruelling run of fixtures for Tottenham, which continued with a 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League on Thursday, Mourinho fears Kane could be in danger of burnout.

Southgate recently said Mourinho must look after Kane in April and May with the European Championships around the corner.

With tongue in cheek, Southgate also pointed out that Mourinho had only namechecked England assistant coach Steve Holland as a friend in his comments.

Kane showed why both men want him to play every minute of every game with a hat-trick and an assist in the romp over Maccabi Haifa which booked Tottenham's place in the group stages.

But Mourinho used his interviews after the game to get the final word in, although he made a slip by calling the England boss 'Gary'.

"What I can promise to my friend Steve Holland and for Gary (sic) not to be jealous. For my friend Gary, I can promise that until the end of the season I don't play Harry Kane one minute of any friendly match," Mourinho said.

"His match was a fundamental match for us. A match that means a few million pounds and means that we are in a group phase of a competition that we have ambitions."

Jose Mourinho believes players are being put in danger by the football authorities after Tottenham beat Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after a 1-1 draw.

Mourinho's men were&nbsp;playing the second of four games in eight days in three different competitions.

Eric Dier was the only outfield player retained in the Tottenham team that started Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Premier League against Newcastle and the England defender had to dash from the field for a comfort break in the second-half.

"The number of minutes played is dangerous. What I did today with I Eric Dier today is very dangerous," said Mourinho, suggesting that dehydration could have led to the defender's problem.

"It should be forbidden to play two matches in 48 hours. What Eric Dier did is not human."

Timo Werner's first goal for Chelsea compounded Mourinho's woes in a dominant start from Frank Lampard's men.

But Erik Lamela deservedly levelled for Spurs seven minutes from time and new Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was unable to stop Dier, Lamela, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane scoring from the spot.

Tammy Abraham, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and Emerson also converted their penalties as the first nine of the shootout were successful.

But Mason Mount's effort clipped the post to the delight of the watching Gareth Bale, who could be fit to feature in the last eight with the quarter-finals not till late December.

"Anything can happen on penalties," said Lampard. "You want to stay in these competitions of course but there's lots to like. We dominated the first half but the game changed (in the second-half)."

Mourinho claimed the fixture pile up gave him no choice but to prioritise Thursday's Europa League tie against Maccabi Haifa given the financial incentive on offer for the club.

"I told the players they should only think about this game, but I have to think about three games," added Mourinho, who faces another of his former clubs Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

"I cannot believe in 48 hours we are playing a European game. The boys were absolutely phenomenal."

Lampard made eight changes, but Werner was one of those retained from the 3-3 draw at West Brom on Saturday and he took the opportunity to get his first goal for the club after a big money move from RB Leipzig.

Tottenham debutant Sergio Reguilon was twice at fault in the build up as he gifted possession to Azpilicueta and then dived in trying to block the Spaniard's cross, which allowed the Chelsea captain to pick out Werner at the edge of the box to arrow a shot into the bottom corner.

Lampard had won his previous three meetings against his former manager Mourinho and the tensions between the two flared during the first-half as they exchanged angry words on the touchline.

On the field, Spurs were the better side as Mendy made important saves from Lamela and Reguilon either side of half-time.

Mourinho showed his intent by introducing Kane from the bench with 20 minutes to go.

Moments later the Portuguese was marching down the tunnel after Dier as the defender made a dash to the dressing room before quickly returning.

Chelsea did not make the most of a brief period with an extra man as Callum Hudson-Odoi fired over and Werner's fierce effort was saved by Lloris.

"He wasn't happy but there was nothing I could do about it, nature was calling," said Dier of being pursued by Mourinho. "I heard there was a chance, but thankfully they didn't score."

Chelsea were punished when Lamela slotted home at the far post from Reguilon's cross to send the game to a shootout and ultimately Spurs into the last eight.

Mourinho bemoans 'dangerous' schedule as Spurs see off Chelsea

Tottenham Hostpur manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a fun incident before their UEFA Europa League match against Shkendija after the Portuguese, after being alerted by his keepers, found out that the size of the goalposts were smaller than the actual size allotted by FIFA.

Spurs goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Joe Hart noticed the dimensions had some errors and told Mourinho, who took the matter up with UEFA’s delegates at the match. Following the match, Mourinho posted photograph of himself on Instagram as he was seen nearly touching the crossbar.

“Before the game was a funny situation because my goalkeepers told me that the goal was small,” said Mourinho after goals from Erik Lamela, Son Heung-min and substitute Harry Kane fired his side to a 3-1 victory.

'Bale is back': Gareth Bale returns to Tottenham Hotspurs after 7 years

Welsh star Gareth Bale has returned to Tottenham Hotspurs after a 7-year stint with Real Madrid. Bale is relishing the opportunity to work with manager Jose Mourinho who had unsuccessfully tried to sign the Welshman in the past.

Jose Mourinho has tried signing Bale during his managerial tenure in Real Madrid, the Welshman was regularly linked with Manchester United when the Portuguese was the coach at Old Trafford.&nbsp;

"He's spoken to me about a few positions that he would like me to play and obviously I'm happy with that," Bale, 31, told BT Sport.

"He was a big reason for me coming back here, he's a household name and a winner. He's the perfect fit for Tottenham. We need to win trophies and he knows how to do that better than anyone.

"I know every Tottenham fan is desperate for a trophy and we'll be trying as hard as possible in every competition to do that."

Bale, who injured his knee playing for Wales this month, is likely to play for the north London club after the October international break and is excited about the prospect of linking up with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

"I haven't trained since the Wales camp so I need to get on the training pitch," he said. "Hopefully, I can hit the ground running in my first game, whenever that may be."

"Harry's done incredibly well since he burst onto the scene and scored a lot of goals. To play with him and Son is an exciting prospect for all of us. If we're all pushing in the same direction it could be a very exciting season."

'He's the perfect fit': Gareth Bale on working with Spurs coach Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is confident Tottenham will have a new striker before the end of the transfer window as he aims to build a squad capable of dealing with a brutal early-season schedule.

Spurs face having to play two midweek matches for two consecutive weeks later this month should they progress in the Europa League qualifying rounds and the League Cup.

"Yes I want, I need a striker but I want to make it clear, the club knows that I need a striker and they also want a striker," Mourinho said on Friday.

"Are we going to get one? I believe so. For the balance of the squad, the team needs it. Especially after the gift we had from the EFL (English Football League) and UEFA.&nbsp;

"We had an amazing gift that gives me after 20 years of football a unique experience of playing Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday for two consecutive weeks."

Mourinho has already added Joe Hart, Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to his squad but does not believe the presence of Harry Kane should discourage other strikers from joining Tottenham.

"I know we have one of the best strikers in the world, I know we have the best in England but I don't like the word 'back-up'," he added, speaking about problems in attracting a striker willing to be a reserve to the English captain.

<h2>- 'Best striker' Kane -</h2>

"A striker can play with Harry Kane -- a striker that comes here is not to be just feeling that he is in that back-up situation.&nbsp;

"So, yes we have the best striker in the country, but we want a striker who can give us more than we have and that is to play, and why not play with Harry?"

After hosting Everton to begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday, Spurs face the first of potentially three Europa League qualifiers with a trip to Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Should Mourinho's men progress they will play Leyton Orient or Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the League Cup on September 22 and then have another long Europa League trip to Romania or Macedonia two days later.

Win both ties and Tottenham will have to do the same again a week later.

One of Mourinho's main aims when he was appointed was to end Tottenham's 12-year trophy drought and he blasted the scheduling that puts their chances in two cup competitions at risk.

"It's not human. It is a big risk in terms of our ambitions first of all," he said.

"If we decide that one of these competitions is not important for us we go against the nature of the club, we go against our own nature, we go against our own ambitions, our rights to try and fight for the competition.

"Which professionals, who are the people, who are the illuminated who make these decisions?

"I would like to know who makes a team play Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday. Do they want us to play with the youth team in the Carabao (League) Cup? That's my question."

"My heart was telling me, 'don't do it'. My brain was telling me 'I need to' - it was more than just an employer-employee relationship," Levy is seen saying.

Even though the series shows glimpses of how the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium was built and turns Levy into some sort of messiah, it would have been a bit better had they focused how the sacking of Pochettino happened.&nbsp;

In what can be termed as the most ‘gripping’ scenes from the first three episodes, Kane discusses Pochettino’s sacking with other players in the canteen. Vetronghen asks: "Apparently they (Pochettino’s camp&nbsp;knew already?"

Review | All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur - Jose Mourinho masterclass so far

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has said that his side would win next season's Europa League if they get qualified.&nbsp;

Spurs took a big step towards qualifying into Europa League after defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the derby clash on Sunday.&nbsp;

Mourinho has won the second-tier European competition two times, once with Manchester United and other with Porto and is eyeing a third with his current team.&nbsp;

"I would love to play Europa League," said the Spurs boss, whose side currently is placed eighth in the Premier League table.&nbsp;

A seventh place on the table could be enough for the London-based team to qualify, depending on results in the FA Cup.

"It is not a competition I am in love with, it is not a competition that I like very, very much to play, but when you cannot play the Champions League, you play the Europa League," added Mourinho.

"In my career I have only played the Europa League twice and I have won it twice. It would not be bad to play a third time and win it a third time. We have to fight until the end to finish in a Europa League place.

"If you ask (six-time Formula One world champion) Lewis Hamilton if he wants to win Formula Two, I don't think it will be a great deal for him, but it is a competition and I prefer to play Europa League than to not play."

Mourinho eyes third Europa League title with Tottenham Hotspurs

Manchester United were given a controversial helping hand by VAR in their 3-0 win at Aston Villa, while Tottenham suffered fresh frustration at the hands of the review system in their 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on Thursday.

United were far too strong for lowly Villa, but their opening goal came from a dubious penalty that left the hosts fuming.

In the 27th minute, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes spun into Ezri Konsa before tumbling in the area despite little evidence of a foul by the Villa defender.

The penalty stood after a VAR review and Fernandes slotted home his eighth goal since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January.

"It all changed on the penalty decision. Fernandes' first touch is on the ball, his second touch is on Konsa's shin," Villa manager Dean Smith said.

"I can understand (referee) Jon (Moss) getting it wrong but if that goes to VAR I don't know what they are looking at. It's a disgraceful decision."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer disagreed: "I think it's a penalty. The boy sticks out his leg, Fernandes does a fantastic 'Zidane turn' and he lands on him."

United doubled their lead in first half stoppage-time when 18-year-old Mason Greenwood scored his fourth goal in three games with a fierce finish.

Paul Pogba got the third in the 58th minute, the France midfielder bagging his first goal of an injury-hit season with a low curler from 18 yards.

Fifth placed United move to within one point of fourth placed Leicester in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

United, unbeaten in their last 17 games in all competitions, are the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive matches by a margin of three or more goals.

Second bottom Villa are four points from safety and haven't won in six games since the restart.

There was more VAR controversy at Dean Court, with Tottenham left in danger of missing out on European competition for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Jose Mourinho's side were off-key for long periods, but could feel hard done by after Josh King's push on Harry Kane in the penalty area went unpushed despite a VAR review in the first half.

Just a week after Tottenham were the victims of a harsh VAR decision in their loss at Sheffield United, Mourinho felt they were the victims of another bad mistake by the replay official.

"The same referee who did the VAR decision against Sheffield United, Michael Oliver. Opinions matter, It's not only mine. Everybody knows that's a penalty and when I say everybody, I mean everybody," Mourinho said.

"Normally at minute five we would be winning 1-0 against a team in trouble, I think the game would be completely different.

"The game had the most important moment. You know when, you know who. Like Sheffield, the man of the match was not one of the players."

Just a year after reaching the Champions League final, Tottenham sit in ninth place in the Premier League, 10 points off the top four and far from certain to make next season's Europa League.

Third bottom Bournemouth thought they had won it in stoppage-time, but Callum Wilson's overhead kick clearly hit King's hand on its way past Hugo Lloris and their celebrations were curtailed by VAR.

Eddie Howe's men, without a win in nine matches, are three points from safety with just four games left to avoid relegation.

At Goodison Park, Southampton held Everton to a 1-1 draw as Danny Ings boosted his bid for the Premier League's Golden Boot.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse won a penalty in the 28th minute when he was tripped by Andre Gomes, but the midfielder blazed his spot-kick against the crossbar.

Three minutes after that blunder, Ings put Southampton ahead, rounding Jordan Pickford to claim his 19th league goal of the season, three behind the top-flight's current leading scorer Jamie Vardy.

Richarlison equalised in the 43rd minute with a clinical finish from Lucas Digne's superb long pass for his 14th goal of the season.

VAR in the dock as Man Utd down Villa, Spurs frustrated

Harry Kane believes he is as fit as he has ever been after netting his first goal of 2020 as Tottenham kickstarted their challenge for a Champions League place next season with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Tuesday.

The England captain looked far more like his old self after a laboured performance in his first appearance for six months against Manchester United on Friday, and was rewarded with a goal eight minutes from time.

"I'm in good shape. I've been working very hard through my rehab, lockdown and training. I feel as fit as I probably ever have done before," Kane, who had surgery on a hamstring injury prior to the season's shutdown due to coronavirus, told Sky Sports.

"When you have been out for six months it is just getting that feeling back on the pitch. You can train as much as you want but being out here is totally different."

Tomas Soucek's own goal had opened the scoring as West Ham remain precariously poised outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

But Hammers boss David Moyes was furious the opener was not ruled out for a handball by Davinson Sanchez as he flicked a corner into Soucek's path.

"I can't believe they have ruled that as a goal," said Moyes. "Who is on VAR tonight? He needs subbed I know that. That's the rules."

Jose Mourinho's men were well worthy of a first win in eight games dating back to February.

Victory takes Spurs to within six points of the top four and within one of Manchester United in fifth.

Should Manchester City's appeal against a two-season ban from European competitions not prove successful, fifth would be good enough to qualify for the 2020/21 Champions League.

"I am happy with the result, the clean sheet, it means the team is more solid, the players have less doubts," said Mourinho.&nbsp;

In keeping with many of the 14 games since the Premier League's restart seven days ago, this was another slow burner as Spurs took time to start picking holes in West Ham's rearguard.

Son Heung-min thought he had broken the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a smart finish at Lukasz Fabianski's near post, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Mourinho launched an impassioned defence of his record of working with world-class strikers on the eve of the game after criticism that his playing style could see Kane look for pastures new.

And Kane had no shortage of opportunities after the break as his near post flick was turned behind by Fabianksi before he fired wide after sprinting the full length of the field as Spurs broke dangerously from a West Ham corner.

"He has been phenomenal in lockdown, he did amazing work at home and he is in the condition to help the team," added Mourinho.&nbsp;

In between times, Pablo Fornals dragged wide West Ham's big chance to go in front and aid their battle to beat the drop.

Moyes's men were undone by one of their own when Soucek unwittingly turned a corner into his own net 26 minutes from time.

Jarrod Bowen smashed a shot against the post as the visitors suddenly had to alter their gameplan of containing Tottenham to look for an equaliser.

But in doing so, they left themselves exposed at the back and Kane timed his run perfectly from a Son pass before coolly slotting past Fabianski and collapsing to the ground in a mixture of relief and exhaustion.

"I probably should have scored one other but it was nice to put that one away," added Kane.

"As a striker it's what you want to do. You want to score goals and want to help win the games."

'Fitter than ever' Kane strikes to keep Tottenham in Champions League chase

Jose Mourinho strongly defended his record of getting the best from top strikers on Monday after criticism the Portuguese manager's style could see Harry Kane look for pastures new.

Kane played his first game for six months in Tottenham's 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Friday, but failed to get a single touch in the opposition box.

Mourinho's tactics were again in the spotlight as Spurs tried to hold onto a 1-0 lead for most of the second half before Bruno Fernandes's penalty secured a point for United.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson said he "worried" for Kane under Mourinho and a lack of trophies could also force the England captain to move on.

Mourinho addressed Merson personally during a videoconference ahead of Tuesday's clash with West Ham and reeled off a list of statistics detailing the scoring rates of Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Diego Milito and Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his time in charge of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Kane scored seven goals in 10 games following Mourinho's appointment before tearing his hamstring on New Year's Day.

"Harry Kane has no problems at all to score goals in my team," said Mourinho.&nbsp;

"Especially when he is fit, when is fresh, when he has routines of playing that's my message to somebody."

Mourinho was also criticised for leaving a visibly tiring Kane on the field for the full 90 minutes last week.

Spurs wilted in the final quarter as Mourinho made just two of five allotted substitution compared with United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who used his full complement.

Mourinho bemoaned his lack of options from the bench, with Dele Alli suspended and Lucas Moura injured.

Alli and Lucas will be available for selection against West Ham and Mourinho is looking forward to having six attacking players to choose from for the first time as Tottenham boss.

"(Steven) Bergwijn and (Erik) Lamela, Lucas and Son (Heung-min), Dele and Harry, six attacking players, all different, all very good and it is the first time I have all of them available, which is the kind of problem which we coaches love."

Mourinho insists Kane will thrive on his watch

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says he is "desperate" for the return of Premier League action despite mounting concerns about the English top-flight's restart plans.

Several stars including Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose have gone public with fears about resuming the season during the coronavirus crisis.

Some top-flight bosses are also understood to have expressed concerns about the plan to play from mid-June when they spoke during a League Managers Association meeting on Wednesday.

But Mourinho said he would relish the chance to get back to work despite the challenges and risks posed by the pandemic.

"I have not asked for any delay," Mourinho said in a statement on Thursday.&nbsp;

"I want to train, and I am desperate for the Premier League to return as soon as it is safe to do so, particularly now we are seeing other leagues preparing to return to action."&nbsp;

Mourinho was forced to apologise in April after being spotted breaking lockdown restrictions to hold a training session with midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in a public park.

Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko also had to say sorry after the Tottenham pair flouted social-distancing guidelines to train together.

Despite those incidents, Mourinho is happy with the way his squad have kept themselves fit during the lockdown.

"I am extremely proud of the way my players have maintained their fitness," he said. "They have shown great professionalism, passion and dedication.

"We have all been working extremely hard through remote squad training sessions and isolated running now the pitches are available to use again at the training centre.

"Every player has been extremely committed in terms of their individual work and now we wait for clearance to commence working in small groups again, which I will fully support."

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says he is "desperate" for the return of Premier League action despite mounting concerns about the English top-flight's restart plans.

Mourinho 'desperate' for Premier League return

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has accepted he was in the wrong for holding a one-on-one training session with midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in a public park in London.

Mourinho was pictured on social media flaunting government rules by meeting up with the midfielder Tuesday, even though they kept to social distancing guidelines.

Fellow Spurs players Davinson Sanchez and Ryan Sessegnon were spotted running side by side in a separate session, while Serge Aurier filmed himself on Instagram running alongside a friend.

"I accept that my actions were not in line with government protocol and we must only have contact with members of our own household," said the Portuguese manager.

"It is vital we all play our part and follow government advice in order to support our heroes in the NHS and save lives."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan told the BBC the players and Mourinho should be leading by example.

"My concern is people, particularly children, who might support Spurs or follow football may see these images, pick up a paper, watch the internet and think, well if it's OK for them, why isn't it OK for me?" he said.

The Premier League has been suspended since mid-March due to the spread of COVID-19.

The British government has introduced a strict series of measures to prevent the spread of the virus and Tottenham have reminded players of their responsibilities.

The club said last week they would be using the government's furlough financial assistance programme for non-playing staff, a move that was seen as controversial and attracted a lot of criticism.

Jose Mourinho admits he was in the wrong over training session

Tottenham Hotspur have reminded players of their responsibilities during Britain's coronavirus lockdown after pictures and video on social media emerged of manager Jose Mourinho and several members of his squad that appeared to show them flouting social-distancing rules.

Portuguese boss Mourinho was pictured training with Tanguy Ndombele on Hadley Common, while Davinson Sanchez and Ryan Sessegnon were seen running side by side in the same public park in north London.&nbsp;

Spurs full-back Serge Aurier also posted a video of himself jogging alongside another person on Instagram.

The Premier League has been suspended since mid-March due to the spread of COVID-19.

The outbreak has seen the British government introduce a strict series of measures which, while they allow individuals to go out for a walk or exercise once a day, state they must remain at least two metres apart unless they are with a member of the same household.

"All of our players have been reminded to respect social distancing when exercising outdoors," said a Tottenham spokesperson on Tuesday.

"We shall continue to reinforce this message."

Tottenham had already been criticised during the outbreak for applying to the British government's furlough financial assistance programme for company wage bills last week on the same day it was revealed Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was paid £7 million ($8.7 million) last season.

Although Levy is among the Spurs staff members taking a 20 percent pay cut, the north London club have come under pressure to follow European champions and Premier League leaders Liverpool in reversing their decision to use public money to pay employees.
