Joe Biden defends his memory after special counsel report on document probe

A special counsel of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), which is probing President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents after he left vice presidency in 2017, released its findings on Thursday (Feb 8). In a 388-page report, the counsel said it uncovered evidence that Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency, which included documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, issues of national security and foreign policy implicating sensitive intelligence sources and methods.

Also read | Tucker Carlson accuses Biden administration of 'illegally' spying on him to prevent interview with Putin

However, Biden will not face criminal charges as the DoJ policy prohibits bringing charges against a sitting president. "I was pleased to see they reached the conclusion I believed all along they would reach – that there would be no charges brought in this case and the matter is now closed," Biden said in a statement on Thursday. He is seeking re-election in the upcoming presidential polls.

Here's a look at the key findings of the report:

> Marked classified documents about Afghanistan:

The special counsel said that it found marked classified documents about Afghanistan in a box in Biden's garage in his Delaware home that also contained other materials of great personal significance to him and that he appears to have personally used and accessed. "The marked classified documents were found along with drafts of the handwritten 2009 Thanksgiving memo Mr Biden sent President Obama in a last-ditch effort to persuade him not to send additional troops to Afghanistan," the report said.

> Notebooks containing classified information:

Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recovered a set of notebooks from Biden's Delaware home. Biden used these notebooks as vice president and wrote down "obviously sensitive information" discussed during intelligence briefings with then-US president Barack Obama, and meetings in the White House Situation Room about matters of national security and military and foreign policy.

"Some evidence also suggests Mr Biden knew he could not keep classified handwritten notes at home after leaving office. Mr Biden, who had decades of experience with classified information, was deeply familiar with the measures taken to safeguard classified information and the need for those measures to prevent harm to national security," the report added.

"After learning of the special counsel's appointment in this matter, Mr Biden's ghostwriter deleted audio recordings he had created of his discussions with Mr Biden during the writing of Mr Biden's 2017 memoir. A special counsel of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), which is probing President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents after he left vice presidency in 2017, released its findings on Thursday (Feb 8).

Also read | Tucker Carlson accuses Biden administration of 'illegally' spying on him to prevent interview with Putin However, Biden will not face criminal charges as the DoJ policy prohibits bringing charges against a sitting president. "I was pleased to see they reached the conclusion I believed all along they would reach – that there would be no charges brought in this case and the matter is now closed," Biden said in a statement on Thursday. He is seeking re-election in the upcoming presidential polls. Here's a look at the key findings of the report: > Marked classified documents about Afghanistan: The special counsel said that it found marked classified documents about Afghanistan in a box in Biden's garage in his Delaware home that also contained other materials of great personal significance to him and that he appears to have personally used and accessed. "The marked classified documents were found along with drafts of the handwritten 2009 Thanksgiving memo Mr Biden sent President Obama in a last-ditch effort to persuade him not to send additional troops to Afghanistan," the report said. > Notebooks containing classified information: Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recovered a set of notebooks from Biden's Delaware home. Biden used these notebooks as vice president and wrote down "obviously sensitive information" discussed during intelligence briefings with then-US president Barack Obama, and meetings in the White House Situation Room about matters of national security and military and foreign policy. Also read | Biden 'willfully retained' classified documents, but no criminal charges warranted: Special counsel "Some evidence also suggests Mr Biden knew he could not keep classified handwritten notes at home after leaving office. Mr Biden, who had decades of experience with classified information, was deeply familiar with the measures taken to safeguard classified information and the need for those measures to prevent harm to national security," the report added. > 'Poor memory': The document mentioned Biden's "significantly limited" and "poor memory" multiple times. "We have also considered that, at trial, Mr Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," the report said. Morning news brief: Voting begins in Pakistan; Nikki Haley says India perceives Washington as 'weak', and more

In Nevada's Republican primary, the "none of these candidates" option won, bringing in a moment of great embarrassment for Nikki Haley, the only major candidate on the ballot.

The ex-UN ambassador chose to participate in the state's primary election on Tuesday instead of the party's presidential caucuses, which is the sole competition in the state granting delegates for the nomination. Former President Donald Trump, the main contender in Thursday's caucuses, is expected to secure all of the state's Republican delegates.

Taking advantage of a peculiar aspect of Nevada's election regulations, a greater number of voters selected "none of these candidates" on their primary ballots than those who voted for Haley. Haley had previously stated her intention to prioritize states with fair processes and did not heavily campaign in Nevada. Republican Governor Joe Lombardo had announced his intention to vote for "none of these candidates," a sentiment echoed by several Republicans heading to the polls.

Biden's win

US President Joe Biden secured victory in the Democratic primary held in Nevada on Tuesday (Feb 6). Nevada, a crucial swing state where he narrowly defeated former President Donald Trump in 2020, boasts a significant population of Black and Latino voters, traditionally supporting the Democratic Party.

As reported by the Associated Press, President Biden garnered 88% of the votes. Apart from Biden, author Marianne Williamson and nine other candidates were listed on the Democratic ballot.

This marks Biden's second triumph in the primary race, following his landslide victory in South Carolina on Saturday, where he received an overwhelming 96% of the votes. In South Carolina, Biden clinched all 55 delegates, while Nevada offers 36 delegates.

Dual Republican ballots

The unique dynamics of Nevada's Republican caucus and primary system have led to a dual-ballot scenario for Republican voters. While they can participate in both the primary on Tuesday and the caucus on Thursday, the latter holds more weight in determining delegate allocation.

The conflicting Republican ballots stem from a dispute between the state Republican Party, aligned with Trump, and a state law mandating a primary. With Trump's strong ground game in Nevada, party leaders opted to stick with a caucus, viewing it as advantageous to Trump's candidacy.

United States President Joe Biden, on Tuesday (Feb 6) called out Republicans in Congress and warned that if it fails to renew funding for Ukraine it will play into the Kremlin’s hands and accused his predecessor Donald Trump of playing politics with US security.

‘Clock is ticking’

The “clock is ticking” for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, Biden warned while calling out Trump for pressuring Republican lawmakers not to pass a $118 billion bill, which includes aid for both Israel and Ukraine but is tied to strict US immigration curbs demanded by the Republicans.

“We can’t walk away now. That’s what (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s betting on,” Biden said at the White House. “Supporting this bill is standing up to Putin. Opposing this bill is playing into his hands.”

‘Show some spine’

“All indications are this bill won’t even move forward to the Senate floor. Why? The simple reason: Donald Trump,” said the US president. He added, “Because Donald Trump thinks it’s bad for him politically.”

Concerns over the handling of immigration have become a top issue ahead of the presidential election this year. The Biden administration has witnessed a record number of migrants trying to illegally cross the US-Mexico border, with a reported more than 9,500 per day, in December.

Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly told Republicans to reject the bipartisan border security deal unveiled on Sunday (Feb 4).

The $118 billion bill is losing support on Capitol Hill with more than 20 Republican senators saying that the immigration-related measures are not strict enough. On the other hand, some Democrats have also opposed the bill because they say some of its measures treat migrants too harshly.

The US president also went on to blame Republicans for buckling under pressure from Trump who has been reaching out to lawmakers to “intimidate them to vote against this proposal.” He added, “And it looks like they’re caving.”

“Frankly, they owe it to the American people to show some spine and do what they know to be right,” said Biden.

Trump has been ramping up attacks against the bill for weeks, going as far as attacking his own party’s leadership as they are trying to reach a compromise on the border issue which will also help unlock aid for Ukraine.

The $118 billion bill is losing support on Capitol Hill with more than 20 Republican senators saying that the immigration-related measures are not strict enough. On the other hand, some Democrats have also opposed the bill because they say some of its measures treat migrants too harshly. The immigration portion of the bill includes the “toughest set of reforms to secure the border ever,” said Biden. The US president also went on to blame Republicans for buckling under pressure from Trump who has been reaching out to lawmakers to “intimidate them to vote against this proposal.” He added, “And it looks like they’re caving.” ALSO READ | 'Nation-destroying': Trump slams court ruling rejecting immunity from prosecution over 2020 election case “Frankly, they owe it to the American people to show some spine and do what they know to be right,” said Biden. Trump has been ramping up attacks against the bill for weeks, going as far as attacking his own party’s leadership as they are trying to reach a compromise on the border issue which will also help unlock aid for Ukraine. “Don't be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration Bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape, or form!” said Trump on his social media platform Truth Social. (With inputs from agencies)

US President Joe Biden said Tuesday that Congress will be doing the Kremlin's bidding if it fails to renew funding for Ukraine's fight against Russian invasion and blamed Donald Trump for playing politics with United States national security.

Opposing Ukraine aid bill is playing into Putin's hands, says US President Biden

For years, fans have looked out for Easter eggs and hints in Taylor Swift's songs on heartbreaks. Swift's love life- however much she tried to keep it discreet- has been fodder for gossip as well as her lyrics, as the men Swift has dated in the past are mostly actors and singers, and celebrities in their own right. But her recent romance with Kansas City Chiefs NFL player Travis Kelce has captured the imagination of not only the couple's fans but also conspiracy theorists in America, mainly from the right wing. Now, that's a first even for Taylor Swift.

All eyes are on the Super Bowl 2024 where Kansas City Chiefs take on San Fransico 49ers on February 11. The Super Bowl is considered one of the biggest sporting events in America but this year is extra special as the NFL hopes to gain more viewers because the game will have Swift in the stands cheering for her beau Kelce.

Conspiracy around Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce romance

Celebrity love stories, especially when they involve Taylor Swift, are always under the public lens. But her romance with Kelce has reached, hilariously enough, the corridors of the Pentagon.

That's because the conspiracy theorists see a psychological operation or psy-op to get US President Joe Biden re-elected.

Now, ordinary mortals like you and me would scratch their heads thinking how the romance of a singer and football player could have anything to do with Biden getting back in office. But that's the beauty of America. It is the land of bizarre conspiracy theories that may not make sense to laymen like us, but those who hatch it are always very convinced about it.

Right-wing inhabitants of what now seems to be a 'Trump land' seem to feel that the Super Bowl is rigged and the result will be in favour of the Kansas City Chiefs, one way or the other. Some outlandish theorists have also claimed that post-win, Kelce, and Swift will announce their engagement and subsequently endorse Biden for president.

Swift is a well-known Biden supporter and had backed him in 2020. Kelce, on his part, had supported the Pfizer vaccine, which the Biden-led US government had rolled into the US market. (Vaccines were a contentious issue during the Covid pandemic, often rejected by the conspiracy theorists). So it makes both pro-Democrats.

Pentagon and NFL react

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy called Swift and Kelce an “artificially culturally propped up couple.” Another even called Swift a Pentagon asset for Biden's re-election- a claim that the Pentagon had to shut down.

"To set the record straight - Taylor Swift is not part of a DOD psychological operation. Period," said spokesperson Sabrina Singh, while cheekily using a Swift song title, "Shake It Off."

Who would have possibly imagined that the Pentagon would have to comment on a cultural phenomenon like Swift and her latest romance? But it did.

Meanwhile, NFL chief Roger Goodell dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding Taylor Swift as “nonsense”.

“Anybody in society in a public position is subject to criticism,” Goodell said of the conspiracy theories.

“But I think the idea that this is within a script, this is pre-planned, is just nonsense,” Goodell said. “It’s frankly not even worth talking about.”

Why is Swift's new romance so hard to digest?

Let's face it. Much of America is conservative in its way of thinking.

For years, the country has managed to sell its liberal-modern attitude and ever-accepting nature to the world but when you dig deeper, you realise that many in the country are still very orthodox, sexist, and racist.

The US cannot yet have a woman leading the country, its political leaders need to showcase their happy families and perfect marriages to win elections, and its abortion laws are questionable, to say the least.

It is only natural then, that many people raise doubts when a 34-year-old successful woman, loved by the world, has a successful romance very much in the public eye.

So the easiest way for them is to dismiss Swift's romantic sojourn at the NFL games and her very PDA-filled romance with Kelce as a political conspiracy.

Here are some samples:

Fox News recently ran a show that discussed: "Is Taylor Swift a Pentagon asset?"

And the anchor, Jesse Waters, said: “Around four years ago, the Pentagon’s psychological operations unit floated turning Taylor Swift into an asset. It’s real. The Pentagon psy-op unit pitched NATO on turning Taylor Swift into an asset for combating misinformation online.”

A pro-Trump broadcaster, Mike Crispi, recently said: "EVERYONE knows Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce is fake and the Super Bowl is rigged. You’re a whacko at this point if you DON’T believe it."

These conspiracy theories have gained currency in right-wing media and spread like wildfire in parts of the population that can now access Twitter without the filters, now that its chief Elon Musk has removed them after taking over the social media platform and renaming it X.

It is easy to label a celebrity of Swift's stature to always have a motive behind every move. She can't possibly be genuinely in love with someone, can she? Where is the time?

Cynics have always been after her and Swifties have always defended her. Whether or not the romance is real is something that time will tell, but till then, let the lovebirds be. And look out for their romance at the Super Bowl. Everything need not be about politics.

Joe Biden has lower approval than all recent sitting presidents: Gallup poll

US President Joe Biden may have trumped his opponent in 2020 US Presidential Election, but as he gears up to contest got a second term in the Oval Office, he faces a tough task. In addition to the usual anti-incumbency factor, US voters are increasingly worried whether Biden is fit to serve a second term. And a recent Gallup poll has reflected the concern. The poll has revealed that Biden has less approval than all recent presidential incumbents.

The poll, as reported in media, has revealed that only 38 per cent of respondents felt that Biden deserved a second term as US president. His predecessor, former US president Donald Trump had an approval rating of 50 per cent in January 2020, the beginning of the election year last time.

There are several, says the poll. Biden's age remains one of them. If elected again, Biden will be 86 years old by the time he finishes the second term.

The gaffe-prone president has sparked repeated worries about his physical fitness and cognitive abilities as over the last four years, he has taken tumbles and has been observed on official stage forgetting names of the prominent world leaders he had discussions with.

As the conflict in the Middle East widens, US President Joe Biden is believed to have lost his cool with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called him a “bad fucking guy", according to a report by Politico. However, the claim was struck down by the White House as Joe Biden’s spokesperson Andrew Bates said, “The president did not say that, nor would he," Politico reported.

Andrew Bates further clarified that the two leaders have “a decades-long relationship that is respectful in public and in private."

Is Joe Biden furious at Netanyahu?

According to Politico, there is no dearth of reasons for Biden to be furious at Netanyahu as the Israel-Gaza war has already cost him millions of votes of young American liberals.

Biden is also fearful that Netanyahu’s actions might further drag the US into the conflict in the Middle East, which could put him in a tight spot ahead of 2024 polls. Netanyahu wants US to entrench itself in the turmoil to ensure steady delivery of supplies and financial aid, Politico points out.
