United States President Joe Biden made another major gaffe on camera as he announced his country will be airdropping food and supplies into "Ukraine" when what he meant to say was the Gaza Strip.

The remarks were made by Biden while speaking with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

"In the coming days, we're going to join with our friends in Jordan and others who are providing airdrops of additional food and supplies", said the president, adding that the United States will "seek to open up other avenues, including possibly a marine corridor".

However, Biden twice made the mistake of saying that airdrops would be made in Ukraine, which forced White House officials to clarify that he was actually talking about Gaza.

Trump, Biden look set for possible presidential rematch after easy primary wins

United States (US) presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday (Mar 4) called for immunity for any US president after he won the Colorado ballot disqualification case at the US Supreme Court.

United States (US) presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday (Mar 4) called for immunity for any US president after he won the Colorado ballot disqualification case at the US Supreme Court. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court overturned a judicial decision that had excluded Trump from Colorado's ballot under a constitutional provision involving insurrection for inciting and supporting the 2021 Capitol Hill riots. The justices unanimously reversed a December 19 decision by Colorado's top court to kick Trump off the state's Republican primary ballot on Tuesday after finding that the Constitution's 14th Amendment disqualified him from again holding public office. The ruling was issued on the eve of Super Tuesday, the day in the US presidential primary cycle when most states hold party nominating contests. Trump hails SC ruling in Colorado case Addressing the media, Trump hailed the Supreme Court's ruling. "I want to start by thanking the Supreme Court for its unanimous decision today. It was a very important decision, were very well crafted, and I think it will go a long way toward bringing our country together, which our country needs," Trump said from Mar-a-Lago. Also read | US presidential polls 2024: Supreme Court allows Trump to remain on Colorado ballot "Essentially, you cannot take somebody out of a race because an opponent would like to have it that way. And it has nothing to do with the fact that it's the leading candidate, whether it was the leading candidate or a candidate that was well down on the totem pole. You cannot take somebody out of a race," he added. "The voters can take the person out of the race very quickly. But a court shouldn't be doing that. And the Supreme Court saw that very well," the 77-year-old Republican added. 'If a president doesn't have full immunity...' "While most states were thrilled to have me, there were some that did not and they did not want that because of political reasons, they did not want that because of poll numbers. We are beating President Biden in almost every poll," he further said. Calling for immunity for a US president, Trump, the 45th president, said, "If a president doesn't have full immunity, you really don't have a president because nobody that is serving in that office will have the courage to make in many cases the right decision or it could be in some cases the wrong decision. But, they have to make decisions and they have to make them free of all terror that can be reigned upon them when they leave office or even before they leave office." Elon Musk slams Biden administration over 'importing' migrants for vote bank

President Joe Biden hosts Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House Friday, for talks dominated by worries about the future of US military support for Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.

Despite their political differences, the far-right Italian leader, 47, and the veteran Democrat, 81, have had warm relations, particularly because of Meloni's strong support for Kyiv as it battles Russia's invasion.

But Meloni's visit comes as US aid for Ukraine is blocked by infighting in Washington, with Biden desperately trying to persuade skeptical Republicans in Congress to pass a $60 billion package of military assistance.

Former US President Donald Trump mistakenly referred to Barack Obama as Joe Biden in a recent rally in Virginia, sparking concerns about the age and mental acuity of the likely Republican presidential nominee.

US: Donald Trump mixes up President Biden and President Obama

For the second time this year, former United States president and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump confused President Joe Biden for his predecessor Barack Obama. This time around the gaffe happened during a rally in the US state of Virginia over the weekend.

Obama or Biden?

Addressing a rally in Virginia over the weekend, the former president confused Biden who once served as the vice president in the Obama administration and said how the Russian president has “so little respect for Obama” that he is threatening nuclear war.

“And (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…has so little respect for Obama that he is starting to throw around the nuclear word. You heard that. Nuclear. He’s starting to talk nuclear weapons today. And I was waiting for that to happen,” said Trump, presumably talking about Biden.

He added, “We have a fool…as a president.” The video also shows that the crowd previously heard cheering and clapping went silent after the former president’s gaffe.

United States President Joe Biden said on Friday (March 1) that he was hoping there would be a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas by Ramadan as the conflict in the Gaza Strip intensified.

United States President Joe Biden said on Friday (March 1) that he was hoping there would be a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas by Ramadan as the conflict in the Gaza Strip intensified. "I'm hoping so, we're still working real hard on it. We're not there yet," President Biden told reporters at the White House when asked if he expected a deal by Ramadan, which will start on March 10 or 11. "We'll get there but we're not there yet -- we may not get there," Biden said. The war has been going on for nearly five months and international pressure is mounting for a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas is weighing a proposal, agreed by Israel at talks with mediators in Paris last week, for a 40-day ceasefire, which would be the first extended truce of the conflict. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a source said the Paris proposal would see militants free some but not all of the hostages in return for Israel's release of hundreds of Palestinian detainees, a surge in humanitarian aid for Gaza, and Israeli troops pulling out of populated areas in the enclave. US to airdrop food and supplies into Gaza: Biden On Friday, President Biden announced plans to carry out a first military airdrop of food and supplies into Gaza. Biden said the airdrop would take place in the coming days but offered no further specifics. "We need to do more and the United States will do more," he told reporters, adding that aid "flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough." Also read | Biden says Israeli firing on Gazans that left dozens dead will ‘complicate’ ceasefire talks Meanwhile, White House spokesperson John Kirby said that Washington was going to redouble efforts to open up a maritime corridor into Gaza to bring "hopefully large amounts" of humanitarian aid by sea. We're also going to redouble our efforts to open up a humanitarian maritime corridor to deliver amounts of humanitarian assistance by sea, hopefully, large amounts by sea," Kirby told reporters. World leaders call for probe into Gaza aid deaths World leaders on Friday called for an investigation into the deaths of Palestinians during a confused incident in the Gaza Strip on Thursday. Israel-Hamas war: Hoping for Gaza ceasefire deal by Ramadan, says Biden

United States President Joe Biden on Friday (Mar 1) said that the country will start airdropping food and supplies as part of humanitarian aid into Gaza in the days ahead.

Speaking with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in an Oval Office meeting, he called the killing of more than 100 people in Gaza a "tragic and alarming event".

On Thursday (Feb 29), a huge crowd of people in North Gaza rushed towards food aid trucks after which the Israeli forces guarding those trucks opened fire at them.

"The loss of life is heartbreaking. People are so desperate that innocent people got caught in a terrible war unable to feed their families, and you saw the response when they tried to get aid in," Biden said.

He added, "And we need to do more in the United States, will do more. In the coming days, we’re going to join with our friends in Jordan and others in providing airdrops."

"In addition to expanding deliveries by land, as I said, we're gonna -- we're gonna insist that Israel facilitate more trucks and more routes to get more and more people the help they need. No excuses because the truth is, aid flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough," the US president further said.

"Now, it's nowhere nearly enough. Innocent lives are on the line, and children's lives on the line and we won't stand by and let -- until they -- until we get more aid in there. We should be getting hundreds of trucks in, not just several. I won't stand by and we won’t let up," he added.

White House confirms planning to be robust, additional air drops to be planned

At a media briefing, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said, "There's few military operations that are more complicated than humanitarian assistance air drops. This is----this is a tough military mission to do because so many parameters have to be exactly right. We're going to pursue this the way we would pursue any such operation -- carefully."

He added that the planning will be robust. "I know that we will learn from the first airdrops, and this will be a part of a sustained effort. This isn't going to be one and done," Kirby added.

"There will be additional airdrops planned and executed. And with each one, I think we'll learn more and we'll get -- we'll get better at them. It's very difficult. It is extremely difficult to do an airdrop in such a crowded environment as is Gaza. Very, very densely populated. A lot of people confined to small spaces. So, you want to do it in a way that you can get it to close -- as close as you can to the people in need, but not in a way that puts them in any danger. And so, the Pentagon will be doing a raft of planning on this," he further said.

Kirby also added that first airdrops will involve pallets of MREs -- Meals Ready to Eat -- and that the country has been working alongside international aid organisations on distribution.

"I can tell you that this first one coming in -- in a few days, will not be the last one. It will be part of a larger, longer, sustained effort to increase the flow of humanitarian assistance," he said.

The two presidential election candidates visited the border to address the issue which has for decades confounded the administrations of both parties - immigration.

Moments after Trump started speaking in Eagle Pass, Biden got a briefing regarding the issue from the border officials.

Later, Biden thanked border agents and stated that he would get them more resources “come hell or high water".

“It’s long past time to act,” he claimed, further stating that border control “desperately” needs more resources.

Making a direct appeal to Trump, Biden asked him to jointly appeal the Congress to pass the bill, which was tanked after it was opposed by Trump and his allies.

"I understand my predecessor is in Eagle Pass today. What I would say to Mr Trump, instead of playing policy with this issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me or I'll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill," Biden said.

"We can do it together, you know, and I know it's the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country's ever seen. So, instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done," he added.

Biden calls bipartisan border bill 'a win for Americans'

Biden said that the bipartisan border bill is “a win for the American people,” and called it a “truly bipartisan initiative".

He appealed to the Senate to reconsider the bill and asked senators to “set politics aside”.

Biden claimed that it's "long past time to act," adding that House Speaker Mike Johnson "needs to put this bill on the floor".

"The majority of Democrats and Republicans in both houses support this legislation, until someone came along and said, don't do that, it'll benefit the incumbent," said Biden. "That's a hell of a way to do business in America for such a serious problem. We need to act," he added.

Hitting back at Biden's appeal, Trump's national press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement, said, "Instead of shifting the blame on everyone but himself, Joe Biden should take responsibility for the border crisis, deaths, and destruction that his policies have caused, say Laken Riley’s name, and use his executive power to shut the border down today."

Trump, in his remarks, said that the death of 22-year-old Riley, a graduate nursing student who was killed while she was jogging near the University of Georgia this month, was “barbaric”.

US elections: Biden calls on Trump to work together on immigration bill as both visit border

The US Congress on Thursday (Feb 29) passed a short-term spending measure that would keep one set of federal agencies operating through March 8 and another set through March 22.

The US Congress on Thursday (Feb 29) passed a short-term spending measure that would keep one set of federal agencies operating through March 8 and another set through March 22. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the passage of the stopgap funding bill would avoid a shutdown for parts of the federal government that would otherwise kick in Saturday. Five months into the fiscal year, Congress still has not approved the 12 annual spending bills that make up the federal budget. On Thursday, it passed the measure extending the deadline for the first six bills. Also watch | Biden warns Congress leaders of ‘dire’ Ukraine fate as govt shutdown looms The measure has now gone to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. The report said that the short-term extension was the fourth in recent months and many lawmakers expect it to be the last for the current fiscal year. Measure clears two-thirds majority needed to be passed The vote to approve the extension was 320-99. It easily cleared the two-thirds majority needed for passage. The report added that Democrats overwhelmingly voted to avert a partial shutdown. However, the vote was divided among Republicans, 113 in support and 97 against. The Senate then took up the bill and approved it during an evening vote of 77-13. Ahead of the voting process, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "When we pass this bill, we will have, thank God, avoided a shutdown with all its harmful effects on the American people." Also watch | Joe Biden's rating for his job as a president drops to 38% × Next week, the House and Senate are expected to take up a package of six spending bills and get them to President Biden before March 8. Then, lawmakers would work to fund the rest of the government by the new March 22 deadline, the report added. The temporary extension will fund the departments of agriculture, transportation, interior, and others through March 8. It will fund the Pentagon, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and the State Department through March 22. Biden called Thursday's vote good news for the citizens, but added, "I want to be clear: this is a short-term fix — not a long-term solution." In 2023, Biden cut a deal with the Republicans mandating tens of billions of dollars in automatic cuts if lawmakers fail to pass full-year spending bills by April. On Tuesday, the president called a rare Oval Office meeting for congressional leaders to jolt them into striking a deal on the budget, and to unblock vital aid for war-torn Ukraine. Self-help author Marianne Williamson, on Wednesday (Feb 28) announced that she is “unsuspending” her presidential campaign and restarting her long-shot Democratic challenge to President Joe Biden.

In a surprising comeback, Williamson, 71, took to X and said that she was re-joining the presidential race after dropping out three weeks ago and announcing the suspension of her primary challenge to Biden.

Why is Williamson ‘unsuspending’ her campaign?

“Hey, I have an important announcement to make. As of today, I am unsuspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States,” Williamson said in a video posted on X. She also went on to admit that she dropped out because “I was losing the horse race.”

The announcement also came after the Michigan primary election results where Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump easily won their respective primaries.

Notably, Williamson, despite dropping out of the race, edged out Representative Dean Phillips (Democrat-Minnesota) and secured third place in the Michigan Democratic primary.

She received around three per cent of the votes when compared to Phillips’ 2.7 per cent. Whereas Biden secured 81.1 per cent of the votes.

“Right now we have a fascist standing at the door and everybody’s all upset about it,” said Williamson, on X presumably referring to the former president.

She also went on to criticise Biden’s economic policies at length and how they only benefit a small part of the US population and argued that “we need a president” who will eliminate student loan debt, provide Medicare for all, and so on.

‘Juggernaut of dark vision’

In her video, the writer and progressive Democrat said that people tell her “you’re delusional”.

“I’ll tell you what’s delusional…closing our eyes and crossing our fingers and just hoping that somehow Biden and Harris will be able to beat that juggernaut of dark, dark vision,” Williamson said referring to Trump.

She also called for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The impact of the Biden administration’s continued support for Israel was also reflected in the Michigan Democratic primary results as a section of angry Democrat voters (more than 13 per cent) marked their ballots as “uncommitted”.

According to the Michigan Department of State, selecting ‘uncommitted’ implies that the voter is exercising a party vote, but not committed to the candidates on the ballot.

Who is Marianne Williamson?

Marianne Williamson launched her second shot at the presidency nearly a year ago and became the first major Democrat to Biden for the party’s nomination in 2024.

In 2020, she backed out of the race for the White House in early January of that year after not gaining enough traction during the primaries and endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders.

Williamson, who is reportedly a spiritual adviser to Oprah Winfrey, came under fire last year due to her "abusive" treatment of her 2020 campaign staff.

WATCH | US: Joe Biden faces protest over Gaza | Biden competes with Trump in Michigan Primary Why is Williamson ‘unsuspending’ her campaign? “Hey, I have an important announcement to make. As of today, I am unsuspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States,” Williamson said in a video posted on X. She also went on to admit that she dropped out because “I was losing the horse race.” The announcement also came after the Michigan primary election results where Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump easily won their respective primaries. Also Read | Biden's Michigan primary win soured by tens of thousands of 'uncommitted' votes in protest over Gaza war “Right now we have a fascist standing at the door and everybody’s all upset about it,” said Williamson, on X presumably referring to the former president. She also went on to criticise Biden’s economic policies at length and how they only benefit a small part of the US population and argued that “we need a president” who will eliminate student loan debt, provide Medicare for all, and so on. ‘Juggernaut of dark vision’ In her video, the writer and progressive Democrat said that people tell her “you’re delusional”. Marianne Williamson: Democratic long-shot ‘unsuspends’ US presidential election campaign

United States President Joe Biden said that his annual medical examination ended well on Wednesday (Feb 28) as he joked about how doctors felt that he looked too young.

This came at a time when there has been increasing scrutiny over his old age as he plans to fight the November elections.

The White House informed that a summary of the test results will be released by the Walter Reed military medical facility outside Washington later.

"They think I look too young," Biden said to the reporters when speaking about the medical exam.

"No, there is nothing different from last year," when the exam results declared him fit for duty, added Biden, while speaking at the White House.

Biden took a helicopter ride to reach the medical centre where he spent just over two and a half hours. He exited the medical centre donning sunglasses and saluted the naval officers before leaving in his motorcade.

The White House claimed that Biden's longtime doctor, Kevin O'Connor was "happy with how everything went", and added that the assessment included a team of 20 physicians.

No cognitive test for Biden

Defending Biden for not taking a cognitive test, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that his doctors assessed that the president is not required to go through one.

"The president passes a cognitive test every day," said Jean-Pierre while speaking to the reporters and referring to the domestic and international political issues he deals with. "This is a very rigorous job," he said.

The routine medical examination of Biden took place at a time when concerns had been mounting over the leader's age.

The issue came under the spotlight after Biden was portrayed as elderly and forgetful in a special counsel report which gave a major boost to his Republican rivals.

In the investigation, he was cleared of illegally retaining classified documents in his garage and home, but added that he would come across to a jury as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

In a fierce counterattack to the investigation in a press conference at the White House, Biden said that his memory was "fine" and slammed the special counsel for saying that he does not remember when his son Beau died of cancer.

Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with late-night TV comic Seth Meyers on Monday (Feb 26), Biden claimed that he was a better bet than "the other guy," who is just four years younger than him.

US President Joe Biden warned top congressional leaders Tuesday of the dire cost of failing to give Ukraine military aid as he hosted high-stakes talks at the White House.

The rare Oval Office meeting escalated efforts to unlock billions of dollars of stalled assistance for Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion -- and to avert a government shutdown at home.

"On Ukraine, I think the need is urgent," said Biden, flanked by Vice President Kamala Harris, adding that the "consequence of inaction every day in Ukraine is dire."

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Donald Trump ally who leads a razor-thin Republican majority, has refused to allow a vote on a so-called supplemental funding bill in which Biden has asked for the new aid to Ukraine.

Biden met Johnson and his Democratic counterpart Hakeem Jeffries, as well as the Senate's Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and opposition chief Mitch McConnell.

The showdown comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine desperately needs continued support from the West to defeat Russia's invasion, and voiced hope the United States would approve the stalled package that includes $60 billion of weapons and other aid.

Moscow is currently mounting heavy attacks on Ukrainian troops, who are struggling with an ammunition shortage as skeptical Republicans in the House of Representatives block aid.

Trump, Biden's likely rival in November's presidential election, is pressuring his party to deny further Ukraine funding until the United States has addressed his own top campaign issue -- a surge in illegal immigration at the US-Mexican border.

Many Republicans, though, are believed to want to back Ukraine's fight.

"There is a strong bipartisan majority in the House standing ready to pass this bill if it comes to the floor," Biden's national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, told CNN.

"And that decision rests on the shoulders of one person -- and history is watching whether Speaker Johnson will put that bill on the floor."

- 'Act now' -

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, US lawmakers were overwhelmingly in favor of arming the pro-Western former Soviet republic, which denuclearized in the 1990s after gaining assurances from the West over its security.

The Senate has remained largely supportive and recently passed a package pairing the Ukraine funding with help for Israel's military and for democratic Taiwan. But this then died in the House.

"Now is the time for action. Speaker Johnson cannot let politics or blind obeisance to Donald Trump get in the way," Schumer, who led a trip to western Ukraine last week, said in a letter to colleagues.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also called Tuesday for Congress to green light the aid.

The House "must act now" to help Ukraine and "to protect our national security interests and the values we and our allies and partners all share," she told a press conference ahead of a meeting of the G20 finance ministers in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The White House meeting will also address a partial government shutdown looming Friday night, as Congress still hasn't approved the 12 annual spending bills that make up the federal budget, almost five months into the 2024 fiscal year.

Without a resolution, a full government shutdown would come the following Friday -- a day after Biden's annual State of the Union address.

The two sides have been negotiating daily and had hoped to release the text on Sunday for the first four spending bills covering about a quarter of the budget, including agriculture, veterans, transport and housing.

In yet another attempt by the Republican party to get United States President Joe Biden removed from office, outgoing House of Representatives member Ken Buck has called on Vice President Kamala Harris to oust her boss by invoking the 25th amendment of the US Constitution for being too old and “incapable”.

What is the 25th Amendment?

Buck, 65, on Monday (Feb 26) introduced a resolution calling for Harris to convene a cabinet meeting and invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Democrat President Biden, 81, “incapable of executing the duties of his office.”

The VP and a majority of the cabinet would have to agree to oust the president if he is deemed incapable of carrying out his duties, as per section four of the 25th Amendment.

The amendment of the US Constitution was adopted after the assassination of John F Kennedy to provide contingencies in the case of presidential death, removal, resignation or incapacitation.

Harris, as per Buck’s resolution, should “convene and mobilise the principal officers of the executive departments of the cabinet to activate section four of the 25th amendment to declare President Joseph R Biden incapable of executing the duties of his office”.

He also cited special counsel Robert Hur’s damning report which called Biden a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” The Biden administration vehemently refuted Hur’s characterisation of the US president.

The resolution by the Colorado representative also said that the incumbent president has been “televised wandering aimlessly at events…frequently speaks publicly in an incoherent…manner” and has “repeatedly fallen while walking up stairs”.

Is Trump any better?

As the US gears up for the presidential election, likely to be a rematch between Trump and Biden, polls have shown that most voters have expressed concerns about the incumbent president’s age.

At 81, Biden is the oldest president in US history and would be 86 by the end of a second term, if he wins. However, Trump who is around three and a half years younger than his successor, was also the oldest president in American history by the end of his term.

Not to mention, Trump has also made gaffes, been televised wandering aimlessly, speaking incoherently, and struggling to maintain balance while walking.

“You got to take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name,” Biden said during an appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, on Monday (Feb 26).

Last week, the former president praised his wife, Melania, and referenced “Mercedes” – Mercedes Schlapp who was his former aide, leading many to suggest that Trump had used the wrong name for his wife.
