<p>The researchers were able to see signals from large amounts of gas that accumulate on a mini-galaxy in the process of being built. Theories also support the same to explain how galaxies are formed. But it had never actually been seen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a report, NASA said that Webb's data shows these "galaxies are surrounded by gas that the researchers suspect to be almost purely hydrogen and helium, the earliest elements to exist in the cosmos".&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA said in its report that the ultra-sensitive instruments installed on Webb were able to detect an unusual amount of dense gas surrounding these galaxies. This gas will likely end up fueling the formation of new stars in the galaxies.&nbsp;</p>

Researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute have witnessed the birth of three of the universe's absolute earliest galaxies for the first time in the history of astronomy. The birth was estimated somewhere between 13.3 and 13.4 billion years ago. Scientists said that the James Webb, which is the largest and most powerful telescope ever launched into space, sent these first "live observations" of formative galaxies to Earth. "Whereas James Webb has previously shown us early galaxies at later stages of evolution, here we witness their very birth, and thus, the construction of the first star systems in the universe," he added. The researchers were able to see signals from large amounts of gas that accumulate on a mini-galaxy in the process of being built. Theories also support the same to explain how galaxies are formed. NASA said in its report that the ultra-sensitive instruments installed on Webb were able to detect an unusual amount of dense gas surrounding these galaxies. This gas will likely end up fueling the formation of new stars in the galaxies. Without Webb, we would not be able to observe these very early galaxies, let alone learn so much about their formation," Heintz said as quoted by NASA. "We're moving away from a picture of galaxies as isolated ecosystems. At this stage in the history of the universe, galaxies are all intimately connected to the intergalactic medium with its filaments and structures of pristine gas," said Simone Nielsen as quoted by NASA. <p>Scientists have found rocky planets outside of our solar system that contain an atmosphere, which is a&nbsp;necessary condition&nbsp;for any chance of sustaining life. However, this planet&nbsp;appears to have a molten rock surface and is inhabitable.</p>

<p>Scientists describe the planet as a "super-Earth," larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. This planet circles a star that is dimmer and smaller than our sun. It completes its orbit in around 18 hours.</p>

<p>The existence of the large hostile planet was revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope's infrared scans with two sensors.</p>

<p>"The atmosphere is likely rich in carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, but can also have other gases such as water vapor and sulfur dioxide. The current observations cannot pinpoint the exact atmospheric composition," said planetary scientist Renyu Hu, the lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.</p>

<p>The planet known as Janssen, or 55 Cancri e, has a diameter of around twice that of Earth and is roughly 8.8 times more massive than Earth. It circles its star at a distance one-fifth that of Mercury. Consequently, the temperature at its surface is around 3,140 degrees Fahrenheit (1,725 degrees Celsius/2,000 degrees Kelvin).</p>

<p>"Indeed, this is one of the hottest-known rocky exoplanets," said astrophysicist and study co-author Brice-Olivier Demory. "There are likely better places for a vacation spot in our galaxy," he added.</p>

<p>The planet is situated in the constellation Cancer, approximately 41 light-years from Earth, within our Milky Way galaxy. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"On Earth, the atmosphere is key for life," Demory said.</p>

The telescope has clicked so many images of the cosmos and has yielded so much information, before sending another treasure-trove of celestial secrets that its almost every day that something or the other stands out from its observations. Now, scientists have found that JWST has serendipitously clicked a galaxy that's 'photobombing' other galaxies in the picture.</p>

<p>What's more, the scientists were not looking for the photobombing galaxy to start with.</p>

<p>The observation was being made under JWST's PEARLS (Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science) observing programme and the telescope was aimed at a galaxy cluster designated as CLG1212. But as the scientists trained JWST's lenses at the galaxy cluster, they found a wispy body in the background.</p>

<p>This was PEARLSDG, the galaxy responsible for photobombing the galaxy cluster in front of it. PEARLSDG is an isolated dwarf galaxy and scientists found that there was no star-forming activity in the galaxy.</p>

<p>The team of researchers led by Ardjan Sturm, a scientist from Leiden University in the Netherlands, pointed JWST at a young star designated as HH 48 NE. It is 600 light-years away from us.</p>

Now each element absorbs and emits light in specific way, giving rise to somewhat of a 'signature' of that element. And by observing the spectrum, a picture can be 'painted' about what elements might be present in whatever the light is passing through.</p>

<p>The SMC is a 'satellite galaxy' of Milky Way. NASA has now posted an image of NGC 346 taken by JWST. It Is the brightest and largest star-forming region in the SMC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The SMC is considered to be a 'primitive' galaxy than the Milky Way because it is believed it has less amount of heavy elements. Cosmic dust is made of heavy elements mainly. And that's why is was believed that NGC 346 would have less amount of cosmic dust.</p>

<p>But the image taken by JWST using its Mini Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals presence of the cosmic dust.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The near-infrared camera of the James Webb Telescope, called NIRCam, was used by astronomers to capture Orion Nebula’s mosaics in short and long wavelengths of light, which revealed unexpected discoveries and unprecedented details.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">When the Orion Nebula’s short-wavelength image was studied by the astronomers Samuel G. Pearson and Mark J. McCaughrean, they closely looked into the Trapezium Cluster, a young star-forming region that’s around one million years old and filled with thousands of new stars till the brim.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Along with the stars, brown dwarfs – which are too small in size for nuclear fusion to start at their cores and become stars – were spotted by the scientists. The mass of brown dwarfs is below 7 per cent of the mass of the sun.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">While hunting for other low-mass isolated objects, the astronomers discovered pairs of planet-like objects, which had masses between 0.6 and 13 times the mass of Jupiter, and appeared to defy a few fundamental astronomical theories. They were dubbed by the scientists as Jupiter Mass Binary Objects or JuMBOs.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">“Although some of them are more massive than the planet Jupiter, they will be roughly the same size and only slightly larger,” stated Pearson, a European Space Agency research fellow at the European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Around 40 pairs of JuMBOs and two triple systems were found by the astronomers, all on wide orbits.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">“Scientists have been working on theories and models of star and planet formation for decades, but none of them have ever predicted that we would find pairs of super low mass objects floating alone in space — and we’re seeing lots of them,” said Pearson.<o:p></o:p></p>

James Webb telescope finds never-before detected pairs of planet-like objects in Orion Nebula

<p>NASA's most powerful telescope the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured a young star's supersonic outflow, which gave a glimpse of how our Sun would have appeared thousands of years ago.<br />
<br />
The rare image has captured jets of star matter which can be seen blasting from a very young star's poles and speeding into space at supersonic speeds. The bright regions surrounding the newborn stars are called Herbig-Haro objects.<br />
<br />
This specific Herbig-Haro object captured in the image is called Herbig-Haro (HH) 211 and is at a distance of approximately 1,000 light-years away from Earth, currently in the constellation Perseus.</p>

<p>Posting the image, NASA wrote, ''If we could take a baby picture of our Sun, it might look something like this. Seen in this @NASAWebb image is a newborn star with supersonic jets of gas spewing from its poles. It's only a few tens of thousands of years old here, but when it grows up, it'll be much like our Sun.''</p>

<p>The Whirlpool Galaxy, as its name suggests, resembles a whirlpool. Just like flow of water when it is exiting a bathtub. The latest image has been taken by NIRCam and MIRI instruments of James Webb Space Telescope.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NASA image shows the warm dust that is concentrated along the galaxy's spiral arms. It is visible as dark red spots.</p>

<p>The bright areas along the arms are where the stars are forming. These regions lead to blue and white central ones.</p>

<p>The areas with orange and yellow areas represent regions of ionized gas which are created by recently formed star clusters.</p>

<p>Additionally, the image reveals cavernous black 'bubbles' through which we can see through the galaxy and can even witness stars that are shining behind it.</p>

<p>James Webb telescope is observing M51 galaxy as part of a series of observations called Feedback in Emerging extrAgalactic Star clusTers, or FEAST.</p>

<p>According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the FEAST observations were designed to "shed light on the interplay between stellar feedback and star formation in environments outside of our own galaxy, the Milky Way."</p>

NASA's James Webb telescope clicks brilliant new image of Whirlpool Galaxy

<p>James Webb Space Telescope of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released several stunning images of space ever since it was launched in December 2021. But a recent image has left the users baffled, as it has posed a giant cosmic question...quite literally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA shared a breathtaking image taken by James Webb in which a pair of actively forming young stars, known as Herbig-Haro 46/47, can be seen in high-resolution near-infrared light.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA noted in a statement that "Herbig-Haro 46/47 is an important object to study because it is relatively young – only a few thousand years old".&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the space agency elaborated on the details of the image it shared, users were quick to focus on a strange celestial object after zooming in towards the bottom centre of the infrared photo. They found the shape of a "question mark".&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA didn't mention anything about the so-called question mark. But to get a better understanding, Space.com spoke to some experts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the outlet, representatives of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages the telescope's science operations, said that "it is probably a distant galaxy, or potentially interacting galaxies (their interactions may have caused the distorted question mark shape)".&nbsp;</p>

<p>And the institute said that since it appears red in the observation, it's quite far away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The representatives added: "This may be the first time we've seen this particular object. An additional follow-up would be required to figure out what it is with any certainty. Webb is showing us many new, distant galaxies — so there's a lot of new science to be done!"&nbsp;</p>

As quoted by the outlet, representatives of the Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages the telescope's science operations, said that "it is probably a distant galaxy, or potentially interacting galaxies (their interactions may have caused the distorted question mark shape)". This giant cosmic 'question mark' in space needs answers. What is it really?

The galaxy, which is called CEERS 1019, has lived for more than 570 million years after the big bang, and the black hole present in it is less massive compared to any other yet discovered in the early universe.<br />

Meanwhile, 11 galaxies which existed when the universe had lived for only 470 to 675 million years have also been identified by the James Webb telescope, stated NASA.<br />

The black hole found inside CEERS 1019 shares similarities with the one present at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, which is 4.6 million times greater than the mass of the sun, NASA added. The newly-discovered black hole is also not as bright as the massive behemoths which have been detected previously.</p>

<p>The James Webb telescope helps scientists find and verify theories using more precise information, in comparison to other telescopes. According to NASA, researchers can see how much gas is being ingested by the black hole and determine the star-formation rate of its galaxy.<br />

Astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin Steven Finkelstein said, "Until now, research about objects in the early universe was largely theoretical. With Webb, not only can we see black holes and galaxies at extreme distances, we can now start to accurately measure them. That's the tremendous power of this telescope."</p>

NASA's James Webb discovers most distant supermassive black hole to date

<p>NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has shared a mesmerising and never-before-seen&nbsp;picture&nbsp;showing more than 45,000 galaxies in one frame. The picture was of a portion of the sky known as GOODS-Sout.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Webb Space Telescope captured the image as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey programme.</p>

<p>As per the space agency, around 32 days of the telescope time will be devoted to the JADES programme to uncover and characterise distant and faint galaxies as astronomers make efforts to understand how the first stars and galaxies were formed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although the data is still pouring in, hundreds of galaxies have already been discovered that existed when the universe had not completed 600 million years. Galaxies, which were sparkling along with a number of young, hot stars, have also been identified by the team.</p>

<p>The part of the sky was previously observed by the Hubble telescope.&nbsp;</p>

NASA's James Webb captures more than 45,000 galaxies in one frame as it traces the birth of the universe

<p>Uranus — the seventh planet from Sun — has not just one, two or three moons, but a total of 27 moons. New research suggests&nbsp;that four of its moons&nbsp;may be hiding oceans beneath their icy exteriors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These four moons, namely Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, and Titania, are over 1500 km in diameter and have been studied extensively by scientists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, a fresh look at 40-year-old data sent to Earth by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft indicates that the four moons may have oceans buried kilometres deep under their surface.</p>

<p>Of these, Titania and Oberon, which orbit the farthest from Uranus, may have oceans buried some 50 kilometres (30 metres) deep. Oceans on Ariel and Umbriel, on the other hand, may be closer to the surface at 30 kilometres (19 miles) deep.</p>

<p>These astonishing findings were shared in a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research in December 2022.</p>

<p>Talking to Space.com, Julie Castillo-Rogez, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and the lead author of this study said: "Finding oceans in the Uranian moons would increase the prospect that [...] ocean worlds are frequent in our solar system, and maybe — by extension — in other solar systems."</p>

<p>The new research can help explain how even in the frigid outer reaches of the solar system, persistent internal heat and a few chemicals can make the Uranian&nbsp;moons watery worlds.</p>

<p>As per the researchers, early in their histories, Uranus' five largest moons — namely Titania, Oberon, Ariel, Umbriel and Miranda — had substantial oceans that ran deep, ranging from 100 km to 150 km (62 miles to 90 miles).</p>

<p>"If the moons had benefited from long-term heating from their planet, then they could have maintained a thick ocean," said Castillo-Rogez.</p>

<p>Europa, a moon of Jupiter, and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, both have significant subsurface oceans. The gravitational pull of their respective host planets causes these moons to experience deformation in their interiors and icy crusts, a phenomenon known as tidal flexing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This process generates heat, which as per scientists, may be responsible for maintaining the subsurface water on these moons in a liquid, potentially life-supporting state.</p>

<p>However, Uranus has weaker tidal forces than Jupiter or Saturn, which means that the oceans on its four largest moons are "mostly frozen by now," according to Castillo-Rogez.</p>

<p>To gain a better understanding of the evolution of Uranus's largest moons, her team created a model using data collected from NASA missions that investigated other celestial bodies with subsurface oceans. The team examined findings from the Cassini mission, which studied Saturn's moon Enceladus, the Dawn mission, which explored the dwarf planet Ceres, and the New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto and its largest moon Charon in 2015.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By analysing data from these missions, the team was able to construct a model of how the moons of Uranus may have formed and evolved over time.</p>

<p>The model created by the team reveals&nbsp;that the Uranian moons likely hold "thin oceans with high salt concentrations". This is likely due to limited internal heat left over from their births and considerable ammonia. The chemical is antifreeze in nature which helps keep water in its liquid form even in very low temperatures.</p>

<p>The researchers also suggest that the subsurface oceans could be habitable environments for microbial life that are adapted to living in extreme environments. They estimate that oceans would contain around 150 grams of salt per litre.&nbsp;Earth's Great Salt Lake in Utah has twice the salt volume but still boasts of life in and around it.</p>

To gain a better understanding of the evolution of Uranus's largest moons, her team created a model using data collected from NASA missions that investigated other celestial bodies with subsurface oceans. The team examined findings from the Cassini mission, which studied Saturn's moon Enceladus, the Dawn mission, which explored the dwarf planet Ceres, and the New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto and its largest moon Charon in 2015. By analysing data from these missions, the team was able to construct a model of how the moons of Uranus may have formed and evolved over time. The model created by the team reveals that the Uranian moons likely hold "thin oceans with high salt concentrations". This is likely due to limited internal heat left over from their births and considerable ammonia. The chemical is antifreeze in nature which helps keep water in its liquid form even in very low temperatures. The researchers also suggest that the subsurface oceans could be habitable environments for microbial life that are adapted to living in extreme environments. <p>“Compared to previous infrared images, we see the incredible detail that we haven’t been able to access before,” stated Tea Temim who works at Princeton University, New Jersey.</p>

<p>Temim has been working as the Web programme's co-investigator and was involved in capturing the images. Cas A was widely studied in different observatories by other telescopes which included the Chandra X-ray Observatory and NASA’s Hubble Telescope.</p>

<p>However, the new mid-infrared images which were clicked by Webb hold a huge amount of new scientific information.</p>

<p>NASA said that Cas A can help scientists find the origin of cosmic dust. This discovery is important because cosmic dust is the building of what becomes planets, stars and eventually, life.</p>

<p>JWST has done it again! It has found four most distant galaxies ever observed. One of them was formed just 320 million years after The Big Bang. This number may look huge but on cosmic scale, it's small enough in order to be just two per cent of current age of the Universe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By the time light from the most distant galaxies reaches Earth, it has been stretched by the expansion of the universe and shifted to the infrared region of the light spectrum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Webb telescope's NIRCam instrument has an unprecedented ability to detect this infrared light, allowing it to quickly spot a range of never-before-seen galaxies -- some of which could reshape astronomers' understanding of the early universe.</p>

<p>In two studies published in the Nature Astronomy journal, astronomers revealed they have "unambiguously detected" the four most distant galaxies ever observed.</p>

<p>Stephane Charlot, a researcher at the Astrophysics Institute of Paris and co-author of the two new studies, told AFP that the farthest galaxy -- called JADES-GS-z13-0 -- formed 320 million years after the Big Bang.</p>

<p>That is the greatest distance ever observed by astronomers, he said.</p>

<p>The Webb telescope also confirmed the existence of JADES-GS-z10-0, which dates from 450 million years after the Big Bang and had previously been spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope.</p>

<p>All four galaxies are "very low in mass," weighing roughly a hundred million solar masses, Charlot said. The Milky Way, in comparison, weighs 1.5 trillion solar masses by some estimations.</p>

<p>But the galaxies are "very active in star formation in proportion to their mass," Charlot said.</p>

<p>After its discovery in 1997, astronomers found the rings later in 2013. Using ground-based telescopes, experts discovered that Chariklo hosts a system of two thin rings. But the powerful James Webb telescope has now gathered more details.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During a phenomenon known as an occultation, astronomers were able to use the telescope to inspect the asteroid. Occultation means when a star or planet moves behind another.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In its blog published on January 25, NASA said that the rings are "probably composed of small particles of water ice mixed with dark material, debris from an icy body that collided with Chariklo in the past".&nbsp;</p>

It explained that this was the first stellar occultation attempted with the Webb telescope and a lot of hard work went into identifying and refining the predictions for this unusual event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The space agency further explained that Chariklo is too small and too far away for even Webb to directly image the rings separated from the main body. It said that occultations are the only tool to characterise the rings by themselves.&nbsp;</p>
