As NASA's James Webb telescope completes one year, here are some magnificent pics it took

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA recently celebrated the success of an experiment, which was the world's first-ever in-space test for planetary defence. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact aimed to deflect an asteroid that poses no threat to Earth. The process further modified the object's orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;space&nbsp;rock Dimorphos helped people on Earth to build the&nbsp;ability to defend themselves against a potential future life-threatening asteroid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fitzsimmons is involved in observations with the ATLAS project. He said, "It really is quite spectacular." Notably, the observations from the space telescopes will help reveal how much matter sprayed from the asteroid, as well as the nature of its surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These observations are also the first time when Webb and Hubble simultaneously observed the same celestial target.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Webb and Hubble show what we have always known to be true at NASA: We learn more when we work together."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nelson said, "All of humanity eagerly awaits the discoveries to come from Webb, Hubble, and our ground-based telescopes – about the DART mission and beyond."&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Webb's images were shown in red because the telescope operates primarily in the infrared spectrum, which allows it to peer further into the universe than ever before.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, the images from Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 were blue because it shows the impact on visible light.&nbsp;</p>

<p>United States President Joe Biden unveiled a stunning image taken by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. The powerful telescope has revealed the "deepest and sharpest infrared image of the early universe" ever taken, looking back more than 13 billion years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The image is filled with thousands of galaxies and features the faintest objects ever observed.&nbsp;NASA chief Bill Nelson said that at least one of the faint, older specs of light appearing in the "background" of the photo - a composite of images of different wavelengths of light - dates back more than 13 billion years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stunning image showed the 4.6 billion-year-old galaxy cluster named SMACS 0723, whose combined mass acts as a "gravitational lens," distorting space to greatly magnify the light coming from more distant galaxies behind it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NASA chief further said that the thousands of galaxies were captured in a tiny patch of the sky roughly the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length by someone standing on Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientific community got a scare after a small meteoroid struck one of the mirrors of the telescopes in May. NASA has said that this created a small but noticeable effect on the data coming from the telescope. Realignment of &nbsp;the mirror was carried out.</p>

<p>In spite of the micro-meteoroid impact, NASA said the space telescope was “performing at a level that exceeds all mission requirements.”</p>

<p>This means that we may be in for a treat once first pictures from the telescope are released!</p>

<p>“Words can’t describe the pride and excitement the Webb team is feeling right now. From engineers to scientists to IT staff to graphic designers to administrative personnel (and more!), we are all overjoyed with the incredible successes of the observatory to date. While we still have a long way to go before getting the science, the engineering feats that have been accomplished, on Earth and now in space, are awe-inspiring. They are a testament to the hard work and expertise of the international Webb team," she says.</p>

<p>Lockwood said that after telescope's mirrors are fully moved out of the launch positions. The process of commissioning will go on for five months</p>

<p>The process will include,</p>

<p>'<strong>1)</strong> Further cooling of the entire observatory, and of the Mid-Infrared Instrument in particular.<br />
&nbsp;<strong>2)</strong> checking and then aligning the secondary and 18 mirror segments into a single coherent optical system, first with the NIRCam instrument and then with all instruments individually and in parallel.</p>

<p>&nbsp;<strong>3)</strong> calibrating of each of the four instruments and their many scientific modes.'&nbsp;</p>
