The protests against her death have been going around for weeks and have now become the greatest challenge to the regime. The authorities have responded with a crackdown that Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights says has left dead at least 342 people dead, half a dozen already sentenced to death and more than 15,000 arrested.

On Saturday, Hengaw, a Norway-based rights group which monitors abuses in Kurdish areas, told AFP that "the government's repressive forces opened fire on protesters in the town of Divandarreh, killing at least three civilians".

Protesters have been killed in 22 of Iran's 31 provinces, IHR said Wednesday, including 123 in Sistan-Baluchistan and 32 in Amini's home province of Kurdistan.

Activists have largely accused Iran's security forces of carrying out secret burials of protesters they have killed, to prevent more violence from flaring at their funerals.

Protests raged in at least 23 cities of Iran on Thursday and Iranian news agency Fars reported that five members of the security forces were killed.

What started as anti-hijab protests, have now turned into anti-government protests, a regime that has ruled the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.&nbsp;

General Hossein Salami, head of the Revolutionary Guards, says Iran is facing a "conspiracy" from the western countries. "The United States, England, Germany, France, Israel, Saudi Arabia and their allies are preparing to fight God, his prophet and the martyrs,'" Salami said, quoted by Fars news agency.

As per Amnesty International, Iran is trying to get the death penalty for at least 21 people to try and intimidate protesters.

In the midst of widespread demonstrations following the death&nbsp;of Mahsa Amini, local media stated that Iran's judiciary had accused more than 750 individuals in three provinces for taking part in "recent riots".&nbsp;

Since the protests started in mid-September, more than 2,000 people have already been accused, with about half of them in Tehran, according to judicial data.&nbsp;

The disturbances, which the authorities have referred to as "riots," have resulted in the deaths of dozens of individuals, most of whom were protesters but also included security officers.&nbsp;

As many as 164 persons have been charged after the recent riots,&nbsp;said Mojtaba Ghahremani, head of the court for the southern province of Hormozgan, the judiciary's Mizan Online news website reported on Sunday.

According to the website, they are accused of “incitement to killing, harming security forces,&nbsp;propaganda against the regime,&nbsp;and damaging public property,” among other charges. Their trials will start from Thursday in the presence of their lawyers,&nbsp;the website added.&nbsp;

According to Abdol-Mehdi Mousavi, the judiciary's chief, 276 additional persons have been charged in the Markazi province in the centre of the country, according to state news agency IRNA.&nbsp;

However, 100 young people were freed after promising to refrain from taking part in any more "riots," according to IRNA.

Asadollah Jafari, the head of the judiciary in the central province of Isfahan, reported that 316 cases had been brought in connection with the current unrest.&nbsp;

Just days after Iran's lawmakers urged country's courts to rein in the 'rioters', the judiciary has said that it will deal firmly with anyone who causes disruption or commits crimes. It referred to current nationwide protests.

The Islamic republic has been rocked by protests after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was detained by Iran's morality police for 'inappropriate' attire.

This kicked off series of nationwide protests that have sustained for eight weeks. They have also begun to take form of anti-regime protests. The protests are proving to be a challenge for Iran's clerical leaders.

"Now, the public, even protesters who are not supportive of riots, demand from the judiciary and security institutions to deal with the few people who have caused disturbances in a firm, deterrent and legal manner," judiciary spokesman Masoud Setayeshi said.

Iranian regime has largely denounced the protesters. They are often called 'rioters' by the leaders. This includes Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

The activist HRANA news agency said 321 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Monday, including 50 minors. Thirty-eight members of the security forces had also been killed, it said.

Iran protests: After lawmakers' appeal, Iran judiciary speaks tough

Iran is making all possible efforts to kill the anti-hijab protests in the country following Mahsa Amini's death, and for the same it has now deployed mounted police, according to videos posted online. Young women have been on the streets to protest Amini's death who lost her life after being held by the morality police for not wearing the hijab properly. Several people have lost their lives in the protests.

In a rare move, a posse of police on horseback in Tehran's streets can be seen in videos trying to stifle the demonstrations. The special unit on patrol is seen standing in front of a row of Iranian national flags on a major road in the northwestern neighbourhood of Sadeghiyeh.

The mounted division of Iran's police force was created in 2013 and is known as Asvaran. It comprises Turkoman and Arabian horses, among others. The cavalry unit usually comes out only during parades and it isn't common for it to be deployed during protests.

Amini, an Iranian of Kurdish origin, died on September 16, three days after she was arrested, igniting nationwide protests. The Iranian authorities refer to them as riots and have tried multiple methods to quell the uprising. They have taken direct shots at the protesters using live ammunition, bird shot, tear gas and even paintballs.

Internet restrictions have been in place to stop people from gathering, with mass arrests also becoming a common thing. Norway-based group Iran Human Rights says the security forces have killed at least 186 people in the crackdown.

Asvaran, Iran's cavalry police, now deployed to thwart anti-hijab protests

On the woeful day of 16th September 2022, a young 22 yr old woman named Mahsa Amini hailing from the Northern Kurdish province of Tehran was visiting her family when she was legally detained by the Guidance Patrol, a vice squad of the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran overseeing that the public but mainly women adhere to the implementation of hijab regulations, and Amini openly defied these societal norms by wearing her hijab in a relaxed manner which exposed her raven hair that draped over the shoulders and ran long down her back and this expression of her existence was found to be non-compliant with government standard.

Here is a little something that is often ignored when victims are covered in popular media outlets. She was a music lover who worked in a clothing store and she enjoyed being photographed blowing the wish seeds off a dandelion flower. It's important to note that like so many Iranian women, Amini was wearing the compulsory Hijab or headscarf loosely over her head while four decades ago during the Iranian revolution in 1979, the women didn't have to adhere to wearing a hijab in public.

The Iranian morality police enforcing the country’s grossly infringing hijab or headscarf law that considers any woman not wearing her headscarf from exactly where her headline starts an attack on the Islamic society of Iran. Some of her hair showed and with no warning, the Iran morality squad detained&nbsp; Amini for wearing “ unsuitable attire” and parcelled her to a reduction centre that instructs women how to comply with the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code and she was supposed to be released the same night. 

But she wasn’t, three days after her arrest, she was declared brain dead. After this, the so-called Morality Police covered up their actions by shrugging any ounce of responsibility. It called&nbsp;her death "an unfortunate incident” and blamed&nbsp;Amini’s demise on a pre-existing heart condition which caused her to collapse. 

The otherwise healthy woman was brutally tortured by the so-called morality police for not wearing her Hijab or head-covering properly as evidenced by the leaked CT scan report that details the multiple bone fractures which caused her brain to slip into a haemorrhage leading to a two-day coma and stroke. This medical report clearly points to her being struck on her head multiple times for flouting Iran’s Hijab laws. 

The people of Iran have taken to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the morality police that patrol the streets, verbally abusing women, detaining them and even torturing them to death. 

The women of Iran are at the forefront of protesting Iranian theocratic society by burning their hijabs in the streets and cutting off their hair in an act of defiance and chanting death to the dictator, the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, while risking their lives for freedom. 

With several now dead, the Iranian government is cracking down on the intensifying protests with violence and tear gas to disperse crowds. All while the protests are only growing beyond the borders of the country. Furthermore, Iran has imposed restrictions on Whatsapp and Instagram to fracture communications with actual information from the ground of mass protests demanding justice for the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police.&nbsp;

The United States and Australia joined the protest, mainly in part due to the death of #MahsaAmini trending on all social media platforms, and with the recent overturning&nbsp;of Roe v Wade that took away people’s freedom to choose what to do with their bodies, the people are sick and tired of authoritative regimes dismantling the system of democracy and mercilessly killing people for their political agendas.

As he has a ridiculous amount of confidence that the protests will die down by the time he gets back from his phoney speech at the New York General Assembly. People across the world are seating with anger with women on the forefront. Protests in Iran against the death of 22 year old Kurdish woman Mahasa Amini have spilled over to other countries as well. People from North America to Europe to Asia have been demonstrating against the Iranian government and in support of the protesters in the Islamic Republic.

In a show of solidarity for Iranian protestors facing a harsh government crackdown, demonstrators from all over the world have come to the streets in protest. This action was triggered by the murder of Mahsa Amini, 22, while in the care of Iran's morality police.

After being detained on 13&nbsp;September in Tehran for wearing "wrong apparel," Amini passed away three days later in the hospital. This death sparked waves of protests that resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people, including teenage females.

At the US&nbsp;National Mall, thousands of women and men of all ages — donning green, white and red, the colors of the Iran flag — chanted. "Be scared. Be scared. We are one in this," some shouted, ahead of the group's march to the White House. "Say her name! Mahsa!"

Nearly 40,000 people showed up in Berlin to offer support for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/giorgia-meloni-sworn-in-as-italys-first-woman-prime-minister-527605">women</a> and activists who have been spearheading the movement in Iran for the past several weeks.

The Woman's Life Freedom Collective organised the demonstrations in Berlin, which started near the Victory Column in the Tiergarten park and continued as a march through the heart of the city.

Nearly 40,000 people showed up in Berlin to offer support for the women and activists who have been spearheading the movement in Iran for the past several weeks. The Woman's Life Freedom Collective organised the demonstrations in Berlin, which started near the Victory Column in the Tiergarten park and continued as a march through the heart of the city. A prominent human rights group said on Friday that around 12,500 people have been arrested and more than 250&nbsp;killed in the protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Iran.&nbsp;

Amini was detained by the morality police in Iran for flouting the hijab rules and that night, she was declared dead after sustaining injuries to her head and her body. The death prompted protests all around the country with women burning their hijabs and even cutting their hair in public.&nbsp;

The Human Rights&nbsp;Activists&nbsp;News&nbsp;Agency (HRANA) said that the death toll has exceeded 250 and urged the Iranian military to stop using “excessive force”. The Centre for Human Rights in Iran also said in their latest report that more than 3000 people have been arrested in the Tehran province alone.&nbsp;

In the past few days, human rights groups around the country accused the security forces of attacking students and journalists. On Thursday, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Maj Gen Hossein Salami, even said that they were close to “snuffing out the remaining protests” in Iran.&nbsp;

The United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union have already imposed sanctions on high-ranking officials and the morality police for the crackdown on the protestors in Iran.&nbsp;

In a show of solidarity with the Iranian women protesting for their rights, on Monday, Kim de l'Horizon, the first non-binary author to win the German book prize, shaved their head onstage as they received the prestigious award.

Workers went on strike, young school girls chanted slogans and demonstration inside schoolyards, celebrities cut their hair in solidarity with protestors, clashes erupted in the streets, and protestors demanded: "death to the dictator" leaving more than 40 people dead and hundreds of injured.

This massive anti-government protest broke out in Iran after the death of 22-year-old girl Masha Amini on 16th September 2022, 3 days after she was arrested by morality police for an alleged violation of Iran's strict dress code for women which mandated loose-fitted clothes covering hair. The alleged offence for which the girl was arrested was the way she wore her headscarf and showed strands of hair.

An investigation conducted on the death of a young girl found the cause of her death a heart attack. The family of the girl claimed she was healthy and had no history of heart trouble before the arrests were made. The brother of the girl asserted screams could be heard from inside the detention centre after which an ambulance arrived and she has been rushed to hospital.

The video of the girl's arrest surfaced on social media attracting global attention over the incident. The hijab-burning peaceful protest erupted in Iran but the government responded with brute force causing a violent crackdown. The protest turned violent "clashing with the police force, demanding death to the dictator and an end to the Islamic rule". Further, the government resorted to batons, water cannons and total internet blackout to deal with the protestors but even this failed to de-escalate the anti-government and anti-hijab protests. As of Oct. 4, the Iran human rights group, an Oslo-based non-profit,&nbsp;estimates&nbsp;that Iranian authorities have killed at least 154 people since the start of the protests. &nbsp;When the world was celebrating 2nd October as the birthday of the great champion of non-violence Mahatma Gandhi, on the very same day, there was a violent crackdown on students protesting at the Sharif University of Technology.

As per the reports coming from various international agencies the situation still intensifies and does not seem to take a rest in the near future and may even further escalate. Amnesty International claimed that birdshot and metal pellets were fired at the protestors. While some of the protestors were beaten with batons. As per the Reuters reports, protesters torched several police vehicles and police stations in Tehran and other Iranian cities. The Deputy governor claimed in the province of Mazandaran, protestors damaged and blazed more than 40 government properties and injured 76 security personnel.&nbsp; Fars news agency claimed, "in accordance with the decision by the official, it has no longer been possible to access Instagram and what's app is also disrupted.

The Iran anti–hijab demonstration is been seen as the most widespread protest since the last so-called green revolution which brought millions of angry Iranians to the streets, angry at what they called blatant fraud in their right to vote. In the green revolution they raised "where is my vote?" and in the anti-hijab protest they are sloganeering "women, life, liberty".

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has characterized the protests as riots and said the protests were orchestrated by “America, the zionist regime, and the people on their payroll to undermine the government's authority.” Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian accused the united states of “shedding crocodile tears”, and added “to Iran, human rights are of inherent value –unlike those who see it (as) a tool against adversaries. &nbsp;Iran’s president apart from mentioning investigation in the death of Amini said there are “double-standards” in the west with regards to human rights.

The world has gone far ahead in discussions of human rights. Travelling from the first generation of human rights encompassing civil and political rights now we are discussing and debating about the fourth generation of human rights encompassing tech rights. The women of Iran are struggling to ensure their first-generation human rights. They are suffering to get their civic rights assured, so they can choose "what to wear and how to wear". Human rights go hand in hand with human dignity. Human rights are bound-up with human dignity. The chief justice of the supreme court of India&nbsp;JS&nbsp;Verma well observed, "human dignity is quintessence with human rights". When the state dictates something is to be worn mandatorily, without testing it on the grounds of reasonability to a section of society dignity is undoubtedly robbed.

Iran is a signatory of the ICCPR (international covenant on civil and political rights) and Iran is bound by its provisions. The very preamble of ICCPR reads as “recognition of the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world". Iran has been rampantly violating the provisions of human rights treaties and conventions.

United Nations demanded an independent and impartial investigation into the death of ms Amini. Independent experts affiliated with the United Nations examined the reports and said reports reflect Amini was severely beaten up by morality police.

The United Nation and the international community have moral duty to prevent this crime against women and stop the morality police from policing women for not wearing something. Iranian women are fighting for their rights and they are being punished for it. The international community cannot bear the cost of being a mute spectator.&nbsp;

We must empower women and expand their choices. We must respect and value the diversity of women. We must recognize that some women face additional barriers to equality because of their race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.&nbsp;- Sheila Finestone.

US President Joe Biden recently said that he was surprised by the courage of the people taking to the streets in protest in Iran. He also mentioned that "we stand with the citizens, the brave women of Iran. It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time."&nbsp;

During a speech at Irvine Valley Community College in California, Biden said that women "should be able to wear in God’s name what they want to wear. Iran has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights."&nbsp;

In response to Biden's remark, Iran's foreign affairs spokesman Nasser Kanani wrote on Instagram: "Iran is too strong for its will to be swayed by the interference ... by a politician tired of years of failure. We will together defend the independence of Iran."

According to an ISNA report, Kanani said, "On Saturday ... Biden interfered in Iran's state matters by supporting the riots ... In recent days, the US administration has tried desperately to inflame unrest in Iran under various excuses."&nbsp;

In an embarrassing episode for Iranian authorities, women portrayed on a giant billboard &nbsp;in a central square in Tehran asked it to be taken down objecting their depiction as supporters of the government and the compulsory-wearing of the hijab. The poster was a montage of about 50 Iranian women wearing the hijab under the slogan “Women of my Land”.

At least three of these women said they did not approve of their picture being misused, while the relatives of a few others objected.&nbsp;The billboard&nbsp;was then taken down within 24 hours.&nbsp;

Award-winning actor Fatemeh Motamed-Arya was the first to speak up in a video. “I am not considered a woman in a land where young children, little girls and freedom-loving youths are killed in its fields," she said in the video without wearing a hijab.

“I am Mahsa’s mother, I am Sarina’s mother. I am the mother of all the children who were killed in this land. I am the mother of all the land of Iran, not a woman in the land of murderers,” she added.

Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police custody after being held by the morality police for not wearing the hijab properly. Her death sparked protests across Iran. Sarina Esmaeilzadeh was a 16-year-old who was killed by security forces at a protest, Amnesty International had said.

Film director Marzieh Boroumand was the next to come out, registering her anger in an Instagram post. “Gentlemen, remove my photo from the wall under which you oppressed children and young people. I will never allow any group inside or outside the country to use my cultural identity for their own benefit," she wrote.

Mountaineer Parvaneh Kazemi also denounced the use of her image on the billboard. “So angry to see my picture in this poster. It’s a shame that the name and image of us women are used only for abuse," said Kazemi, who has summited the Everest.

The son of the late actor Homa Rousta also objected to the use of his mother’s image.

“My mother, Homa Rousta was with people throughout her personal and artistic life and lived with dignity and pride. For years, you even censored her because of the name and position of her father, Reza Rousta. Now, after her death, you took possession of her image and installed it in a square where, thanks to you, I have witnessed the disgusting scene of intimidation and disrespect to men and women with my own eyes every day,” Kaveh Samandarian wrote on Instagram.

Director and screenplay writer Reza Dormishian pointed out that the photo of an Iranian actor from one of his films had been put up on the billboard. He said another image was of the photojournalist, Nooshin Jafari, who is currently serving a four-year term for insulting the state.&nbsp;

The poster was later put up again minus the photos but with the same wording.

Protesters are going on over the custodial death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by Iran's morality police for 'improper' attire, last month.

"I want you to know that we stand with the citizens, the brave women of Iran," Biden said at a college in Irvine, California, addressing a group of protesters who had gathered holding "Free Iran" signs.&nbsp;

"It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time," said Biden.&nbsp;

Mahsa Amini passed away on September 16. According to Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, more than 100 people have been killed since.

The unrest has continued despite what Amnesty International called an "unrelenting brutal crackdown" that included an "all-out attack on child protesters" -- leading to the death&nbsp;of at least 23 minors.&nbsp;

Biden spoke briefly about the Iran protests ahead of a speech on lowering costs for American families in Irvine, near Los Angeles, which has a large Persian community. &nbsp;

"Women all over the world are being persecuted in various ways, but they should be able to wear in God's name what they want to wear," said Biden.&nbsp;

He added that Iran "has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights".

"I want to thank you all for speaking out," he told the local Persian community.

In an interview with an Iranian news site, Larijani said, “The hijab has a cultural solution, it does not need decrees and referendums. I appreciate the services of the police force and Basij [paramilitary militia], but this burden of encouraging the hijab should not be assigned to them."

Larijani's comments showcase a divide that has now crept into the the political scene of the country following Mahsa Amini's death and the consequent protests across the country. The 22-year-old was arrested by Iran's so-called morality police for not wearing the hijab properly and later died in custody.

Iranian administration and supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have blamed western countries for the unrest. Authorities have also been trying to undermine the credibility of Amini's family. Protesters had called for a mass rally in Tehran on Wednesday. 
 
Tehran witnessed violence overnight besides in the Kurdish towns of Sanandaj, Saqez, Bukan and Dehgolan. Many shops also remained shut, while a demonstration led by the Tehran bar association was broken up by security forces.

The fury and desperation in their chants, and the confident arrival of Iran’s insurgent girls into the dangerous public sphere of protest is exceptional and extraordinary. They are fighting pre-emptively against a future where their bodies will continue to be controlled by the Islamic Republic. Whatever the fate of Iran’s protest movement, now entering its third week, the authorities’ feminist opposition now includes schoolchildren.

But her unremarkable appearance is, in fact, the point. A distinguishing feature of Iranian life in recent years has been the selective enforcement of the hijab laws. The pockets of society that have managed to flourish in spite of the economy’s overall decline have lived in relative freedom from such restrictions for years, protected by their wealth, exclusive neighborhoods and regime connections. This partly explains the speed at which protests about Ms. Amini’s death accelerated into a wholesale rejection of the Islamic Republic, its leaders and its management of the country. The gap between the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed by the system’s affiliated elite and those of ordinary Iranians has never been so wide — and never have so many people expressed so much anger about it.

This fundamental repudiation of the system is what makes these protests so different from other restive moments in Iran’s recent past: In 1999, students demonstrated against the closing of a reformist newspaper; in 2009, millions marched against an allegedly rigged presidential election, demanding the ascent of different leaders within the system. Today, many despair of any prospect for change and feel a sense of bleak, collective loss.

Tehran lies at the base of towering snow-dusted mountains and spreads downward through leafy districts lined with old villas and luxury apartment towers, and outward in an ever-growing sprawl of apartment blocks and the concrete, low-slung suburbs where the poor live. Bright lights of malls filled with jewelry stores and patisseries, commercial skyscrapers and an in-construction triple butterfly tower by Zaha Hadid dominate the skyline. A grand, plane-tree-lined boulevard, modeled after the Champs-Élysées, runs from the foothills through the length of the city. Anywhere you stand, your proximity to the mountains determines the quality of the air you breathe, your view of the city and your place in it.

The morality police scarcely venture into north Tehran, into neighborhoods where families of government officials live in apartment towers with saunas and elevator garages for parking. The sons of the regime’s elite race their Maseratis up and down the area’s tree-lined boulevards. Last winter, I saw a woman in chador (full body covering) driving a matte black Bugatti.

For the wealthy women of north Tehran, the right to be free from the hijab is already a de facto reality. They dine in rooftop restaurants on sushi and mezze bareheaded, their new-season Gucci bags dangling on their seats, served by uncovered waitresses. Last summer, even the bare midriff, once a jolting sight, became commonplace. My son, visiting Iran for the first time two summers ago, assumed being able to remove your head scarf in restaurants was an actual law. For the new elite, it might as well be. As one protester put it to me: “Can you imagine the police picking up a girl at one of those places? Her father probably works for a ministry and would deploy the whole squad to the Afghan border.”

Neither do the morality police impose their rules in Lavasan, a small town outside Tehran and now a playground for soccer players, celebrities and the regime-affiliated wealthy. Numerous Instagram accounts dedicated to showing ordinary Iranians how their overlords live — in their chateaus, gated villa compounds and infinity pools, with their scantily clad, unmolested lifestyles — have exposed the chasm between the rulers and the ruled.

Across the rest of Tehran, in public parks and metro stations, on buses and around terminals — the contact points where Iranians from the poorer southern neighborhoods and outlying low-wage suburbs enter the city and approach its privileged north — the roving white Mitsubishi vans of the morality police prowl. They may not patrol daily, but regularly enough to project their coercive authority and instill the fear that they may always be lurking.

What is “proper” hijab, anyway? It is meant to be a scarf over the head worn with a longish tunic, an outfit that conforms to what nowadays is called “modest fashion.” What the morality police enforce has little objective basis. They arbitrarily flex the power of the state, conveying that they can stop you whenever they want on the pretext that something is wrong on your body. The consequences range from being a nuisance to destroying a life.

When Ebrahim Raisi, a hard-liner, took office last summer, he became president of an Iran where the hijab had receded as a boondoggle in public life. A country where the sidewalk on Enghelab Street in the city center, the street named after the revolution, was plastered with stickers of women with bee-stung lips, advertising lip fillers. The hopeful imagined that if the hard-liners controlled all the branches of government, they would feel less insecure and behave tolerantly. Instead, in July, Mr. Raisi signaled that he intended to intensify enforcement of hijab rules. In the wake of his decision, morality patrols increased, especially on the metro and buses. Numerous women were arrested for infringements of the conservative dress code. Among them was a young writer, Sepideh Rashno, who was detained and later surfaced on state television making what appeared to be a coerced apology for not complying with proper hijab.

I traveled to Tehran in late September, as I do every few months, to visit family. On one of my first evenings back, I went to buy bread in the neighborhood and understood quickly from the darkened streets (every other street lamp was switched off), deserted sidewalks, broken glass and scorched shrubbery that something terribly violent had just occurred. A couple of indiscreet intelligence agents, with the wrong haircuts and awkward shirts, loitered at a newspaper kiosk. A pair of women wearing chadors and scuffed shoes walked too briskly up and down the street. It felt like a film set, with everyone playing their roles, the saboteurs posing as protesters to torch the area under cover of darkness, the actual inhabitants vanished.

One morning, I met Niloofar, a translator and graphic artist (most Iranians work more than one job these days to get by) in her mid-30s who remembered the ferocity of the full-fledged crackdown in 2009. Two days before we met, she had joined the crowds gathering in Sattarkhan, a neighborhood in central Tehran, which had become one of the capital’s most restive areas. She was heartened by the women in head scarves she saw among the protesters, women who choose to wear hijab by choice but had come out to support a movement against its imposition. “It’s no small thing to come out into the street,” she said. “You risk your life, arrest, injury. It’s like a war out there.”

Niloofar saw the decision of these women to oppose the government as critical, a feature that makes this movement, even if smaller by numbers, broader than anything Iran has experienced since 1979. In turn, protesters are careful to avoid insulting religion, mindful that despite society’s steady shift toward secularism, tolerance for individual freedom in belief is at the very core of their demands. “Islam is one thing, the system is another,” Niloofar said. “Maybe this system has damaged people’s piety most of all. And maybe secularism is the answer to our problems. But no one is saying it’s time to say that yet.”

The evening that Niloofar joined the protests in Sattarkhan, a group of protesters set crates and trash bins alight to create a barrier between them and the police, who fired tear-gas grenades. The noxious smoke filled the streets and seeped into nearby homes. At first Niloofar thought the police had hurled a bomb, so loud was the sound of the tear-gas grenade’s explosion. She felt pinned to the pavement and began to suffocate. She stumbled down an alleyway, where two young activists pulled her into a doorway and helped her recover.

As she recovered, she traded rumors with the protesters who’d helped her: that the security forces are employing adolescent boys and recruits from Iraq because their ranks are so divided and unwilling; that intelligence agents loiter in pharmacies to interrogate people who show up at night to buy first-aid supplies, since protesters are being treated at private homes by doctors; that a satellite television channel is broadcasting instruction on how to make Molotov cocktails. They all agreed that turnout at a rally organized by counterprotesters earlier in the week as a show of support for the government’s crackdown against the protesters, whom the pro-government activists had depicted as Quran-burning thugs, was a flop.

Even the police, by some accounts, are divided and exhausted. The police force itself, distinct from the Basij militia and the Revolutionary Guards, is less politically ideological. After dusk on Sept. 27, I watched as policemen across Tehran simply sat down on the sidewalks in a long line of reluctant, exhausted authority. One said he hadn’t slept for four nights and when he went home, he got an earful from his mother: Don’t you dare beat other people’s children. He didn’t want to, anyway. The policemen have sisters, lovers and friends who are on the other side of these clashes in person. For the first time in its history, the Iranian state is staring a challenge in the face, knowing many of its forces’ sympathies lie with the people.

The anger against the state has also been manifesting in a disturbing manner: In Tehran, there has been in recent months street harassment of women in the black chador, the long enveloping shroud worn either out of religious belief or as a sign of loyalty to the system. I heard of several recent instances of women who have had their chadors ripped off, and been hissed at and spat upon. A former senior government official said on television that workers ignore his wife while she tries to do her business at government offices when she wears it. On another evening, the first week of the protests, a relative of mine, along with a young chador-clad woman, were the last two patients at a dentist’s office in an upscale neighborhood in north Tehran. Her cleaning had finished shortly after 7 p.m., but afraid of being harassed by protesters on the way home, she stayed in the clinic until 10 p.m., waiting for a ride from her brother.

For women who lived through the 1979 Islamic revolution, today’s feminist rebellion against the political order evokes memories. My mother-in-law, a historian and retired university professor, reminded me that in the lead-up to the 1979 revolution, women began voluntarily wearing the black chador on university campuses as a sign of their dissent against the regime of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. “The chador was a symbol of the revolution,” she said. “How ironic that now as a sign of protest it should be a rejection of the head scarf.”

One extraordinary form that rejection has taken is young women publicly and ritually cutting their hair at protests, before chanting and riveted crowds. There is something profoundly uneasy about that sight. A few days earlier, in the main square in Kerman, a city about 600 miles from Tehran, a masked young woman sat atop an electrical box and lowered her head to one side, trying to slice off her long hair with shears. It felt like a ritual sacrifice, this self-shearing, in a culture whose poetry has for centuries invoked hair as a metaphor for immemorial beauty, chains of binding love, shrouds of truth. What matters to the protesters beyond the right to dress freely varies by life stage and what discriminatory law or state-enabled patriarchal norm they’re up against. The list of injustices is long: unequal marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance laws; the lack of important protections under new domestic and gender-based violence statutes; unequal access to sports stadiums; employment discrimination; and workplace sexual harassment. I asked a 34-year-old friend who is trying to save up to emigrate to Sweden what mattered most to her. “I’d like to live in a society where when I submit a résumé for a job, I’m not asked to submit a full-length picture of myself and probably expected to sleep with my boss,” she said. To the same question, a 22-year-old told me she wanted to be able to move about in public without any fear or stress.

Since the protests began, the evenings feel as though the city is under some sort of curfew. One evening last week, I walked down a popular street in north Tehran and nearly everything was closed. The security guard at one of the fashionable cafes said the police had ordered them to shut. A couple of smaller places said they’d closed early to give their staff a chance to get home safely. At the juice stands and shopping complexes that were open, nearly all the young women had their head scarves down, as did middle-aged women doing their shopping. What was transfixing, though, was seeing bareheaded women in central parts of the city where such liberties are rarer, on the backs of motorcycles darting down Enghelab Street, at cafes frequented by university students. At an outdoor mall in eastern Tehran, a young woman flounced past a stall selling shawls and head scarves. “Pack up and go, sir. Don’t you know this is all over?” she exclaimed, sweeping her arm past his wares. “Why don’t you buy them and then burn them?” he suggested, smiling.

Early last week, shortly before midnight, the north Tehran neighborhood where my family lives finally displayed some signs of political life. The shouts began from a nearby building, a whole chorus of voices at once, and at first aroused my suspicions. They came from the most aspirational building in the neighborhood, a confection of narrowing white rococo columns, exactly like a wedding cake and ringed with Versailles-inspired topiary, a building one could afford and be inclined to live in only if one very much didn’t have a problem with state patronage.

The doorman darted out into the street and peered up into the darkness, trying to see what floor was demanding death to the country’s leaders. The calls soon picked up and echoed across the hillside, a cacophony of voices young and old, male and female. One sharp and high female voice led the neighborhood into a more varied set of chants about “woman, life and freedom.” I could make out shadowy silhouettes of people alone on rooftops, people on balconies silently watching, gathered in lighted stairwells, together in the fearless darkness.

On Oct. 3, a few days after I left Tehran, the state finally responded to the dissent that was gripping the country. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the protesters as rioters and accused them of being instigated by the United States and Israel. Local officials report that at least 1,500 people have been arrested. While it’s unlikely the state will formally make any concessions and relax its dress laws, there is much precedent in Iranian life for tacit change. The authorities may pull the morality police off the streets and permit de facto freedoms in women’s dress without ever acknowledging a change in position, which they would see as showing weakness. Such a move would be in keeping with what is described in Persian as practical politics, or “siyasat-e amali,” as opposed to “siyasat-e elaami,” or declared politics.

Where is it all going? What is this revolt? A feminist revolution for bodily freedom and gender equality; a radical civil rights movement against misogynistic, corrupt policing; or a leaderless, unorganized uprising that demands a fundamental overhaul in relations between citizens and the state? Perhaps it is all of these things at the same time.

What is certain is that morality policing will forever be tainted with the death of Mahsa Amini, viewed as an offense to public honor rather than its defender. Thirteen-year-old schoolgirls have already experienced the power of collective protest — even if the system cracks down with the brute force of which it is so capable, and even if the protests dwindle, and even if no one has a clue as to who or what might be an alternative or how to get there.

“Even if it stops tomorrow, it’s a victory,” Niloofar said. “It has given them a lesson they will always remember.”

She was heartened by the women in head scarves she saw among the protesters, women who choose to wear hijab by choice but had come out to support a movement against its imposition. “It’s no small thing to come out into the street,” she said. “You risk your life, arrest, injury. It’s like a war out there.” Niloofar saw the decision of these women to oppose the government as critical, a feature that makes this movement, even if smaller by numbers, broader than anything Iran has experienced since 1979. In turn, protesters are careful to avoid insulting religion, mindful that despite society’s steady shift toward secularism, tolerance for individual freedom in belief is at the very core of their demands. “Islam is one thing, the system is another,” Niloofar said. “Maybe this system has damaged people’s piety most of all. And maybe secularism is the answer to our problems. But no one is saying it’s time to say that yet.” The evening that Niloofar joined the protests in Sattarkhan, a group of protesters set crates and trash bins alight to create a barrier between them and the police, who fired tear-gas grenades. The noxious smoke filled the streets and seeped into nearby homes. At first Niloofar thought the police had hurled a bomb, so loud was the sound of the tear-gas grenade’s explosion. She felt pinned to the pavement and began to suffocate. She stumbled down an alleyway, where two young activists pulled her into a doorway and helped her recover. As she recovered, she traded rumors with the protesters who’d helped her: that the security forces are employing adolescent boys and recruits from Iraq because their ranks are so divided and unwilling; that intelligence agents loiter in pharmacies to interrogate people who show up at night to buy first-aid supplies, since protesters are being treated at private homes by doctors; that a satellite television channel is broadcasting instruction on how to make Molotov cocktails. They all agreed that turnout at a rally organized by counterprotesters earlier in the week as a show of support for the government’s crackdown against the protesters, whom the pro-government activists had depicted as Quran-burning thugs, was a flop. Even the police, by some accounts, are divided and exhausted. The police force itself, distinct from the Basij militia and the Revolutionary Guards, is less politically ideological. After dusk on Sept. 27, I watched as policemen across Tehran simply sat down on the sidewalks in a long line of reluctant, exhausted authority. One said he hadn’t slept for four nights and when he went home, he got an earful from his mother: Don’t you dare beat other people’s children. He didn’t want to, anyway. The policemen have sisters, lovers and friends who are on the other side of these clashes in person. For the first time in its history, the Iranian state is staring a challenge in the face, knowing many of its forces’ sympathies lie with the people. The anger against the state has also been manifesting in a disturbing manner: In Tehran, there has been in recent months street harassment of women in the black chador, the long enveloping shroud worn either out of religious belief or as a sign of loyalty to the system. I heard of several recent instances of women who have had their chadors ripped off, and been hissed at and spat upon. A former senior government official said on television that workers ignore his wife while she tries to do her business at government offices when she wears it. On another evening, the first week of the protests, a relative of mine, along with a young chador-clad woman, were the last two patients at a dentist’s office in an upscale neighborhood in north Tehran. Her cleaning had finished shortly after 7 p.m., but afraid of being harassed by protesters on the way home, she stayed in the clinic until 10 p.m., waiting for a ride from her brother. For women who lived through the 1979 Islamic revolution, today’s feminist rebellion against the political order evokes memories. My mother-in-law, a historian and retired university professor, reminded me that in the lead-up to the 1979 revolution, women began voluntarily wearing the black chador on university campuses as a sign of their dissent against the regime of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. “The chador was a symbol of the revolution,” she said. “How ironic that now as a sign of protest it should be a rejection of the head scarf.” One extraordinary form that rejection has taken is young women publicly and ritually cutting their hair at protests, before chanting and riveted crowds. There is something profoundly uneasy about that sight. A few days earlier, in the main square in Kerman, a city about 600 miles from Tehran, a masked young woman sat atop an electrical box and lowered her head to one side, trying to slice off her long hair with shears. It felt like a ritual sacrifice, this self-shearing, in a culture whose poetry has for centuries invoked hair as a metaphor for immemorial beauty, chains of binding love, shrouds of truth. I saw young women in Tehran walking around with their uncovered shorn heads, a beautiful proud wound. What matters to the protesters beyond the right to dress freely varies by life stage and what discriminatory law or state-enabled patriarchal norm they’re up against. The list of injustices is long: unequal marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance laws; the lack of important protections under new domestic and gender-based violence statutes; unequal access to sports stadiums; employment discrimination; and workplace sexual harassment. I asked a 34-year-old friend who is trying to save up to emigrate to Sweden what mattered most to her. “I’d like to live in a society where when I submit a résumé for a job, I’m not asked to submit a full-length picture of myself and probably expected to sleep with my boss,” she said. To the same question, a 22-year-old told me she wanted to be able to move about in public without any fear or stress. Since the protests began, the evenings feel as though the city is under some sort of curfew. One evening last week, I walked down a popular street in north Tehran and nearly everything was closed. The security guard at one of the fashionable cafes said the police had ordered them to shut. A couple of smaller places said they’d closed early to give their staff a chance to get home safely. At the juice stands and shopping complexes that were open, nearly all the young women had their head scarves down, as did middle-aged women doing their shopping. What was transfixing, though, was seeing bareheaded women in central parts of the city where such liberties are rarer, on the backs of motorcycles darting down Enghelab Street, at cafes frequented by university students. At an outdoor mall in eastern Tehran, a young woman flounced past a stall selling shawls and head scarves. “Pack up and go, sir. Don’t you know this is all over?” she exclaimed, sweeping her arm past his wares. “Why don’t you buy them and then burn them?” he suggested, smiling. Early last week, shortly before midnight, the north Tehran neighborhood where my family lives finally displayed some signs of political life. The shouts began from a nearby building, a whole chorus of voices at once, and at first aroused my suspicions. They came from the most aspirational building in the neighborhood, a confection of narrowing white rococo columns, exactly like a wedding cake and ringed with Versailles-inspired topiary, a building one could afford and be inclined to live in only if one very much didn’t have a problem with state patronage. The doorman darted out into the street and peered up into the darkness, trying to see what floor was demanding death to the country’s leaders. The calls soon picked up and echoed across the hillside, a cacophony of voices young and old, male and female. One sharp and high female voice led the neighborhood into a more varied set of chants about “woman, life and freedom.” I could make out shadowy silhouettes of people alone on rooftops, people on balconies silently watching, gathered in lighted stairwells, together in the fearless darkness. On Oct. 3, a few days after I left Tehran, the state finally responded to the dissent that was gripping the country. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the protesters as rioters and accused them of being instigated by the United States and Israel. Local officials report that at least 1,500 people have been arrested. While it’s unlikely the state will formally make any concessions and relax its dress laws, there is much precedent in Iranian life for tacit change. The authorities may pull the morality police off the streets and permit de facto freedoms in women’s dress without ever acknowledging a change in position, which they would see as showing weakness. Such a move would be in keeping with what is described in Persian as practical politics, or “siyasat-e amali,” as opposed to “siyasat-e elaami,” or declared politics. Where is it all going? What is this revolt? A feminist revolution for bodily freedom and gender equality; a radical civil rights movement against misogynistic, corrupt policing; or a leaderless, unorganized uprising that demands a fundamental overhaul in relations between citizens and the state? Perhaps it is all of these things at the same time. What is certain is that morality policing will forever be tainted with the death of Mahsa Amini, viewed as an offense to public honor rather than its defender. Thirteen-year-old schoolgirls have already experienced the power of collective protest — even if the system cracks down with the brute force of which it is so capable, and even if the protests dwindle, and even if no one has a clue as to who or what might be an alternative or how to get there. “Even if it stops tomorrow, it’s a victory,” Niloofar said. “It has given them a lesson they will always remember.”

Iran is currently experiencing massive protests over the death of Amini – a 22-year-old who was found dead after being detained by the morality police for breaking the hijab laws. The death of Nika has also become symbolic of the protests as the authorities continue to crack down on dissent.

According to official data, around 1200 people have been arrested in the protests till now and more than 100 people have lost their lives including Nika who was found dead on September 20.

Nasrin said that the authorities took her body away for almost 10 days before returning it eventually to the family and no proper explanation was provided regarding her death. Even on the official death certificate, her cause of death has been cited as “multiple blows caused by a hard object”.

A number of people from her family has alleged that Nika was thrown from the roof of a building by the authorities, but the police has denied it all. Nika’s aunt and uncle were arrested on Wednesday.

The family fears that they “had been forced to make the confessions and broadcast them”.

The Iran Human Rights (IHR) group&nbsp;said on&nbsp;Sunday (October 2) that&nbsp;at least 92 people had died as a result of a crackdown on nationwide protests&nbsp;sparked after Mahsa Amini's death on September 16.&nbsp;

Amini was imprisoned by the morality police for allegedly wearing a headscarf in an "improper" way. The 22-year-old is thought to have died in custody.&nbsp;

Her death led to massive protests in Iran and abroad too. Now, the protests have stretched into the third week.&nbsp;

Amid escalating tensions, President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday said that the "enemies" of Iran had "failed in their conspiracy".&nbsp;

IHR, an organisation based in Oslo, reported citing local sources that 41 additional people died in clashes on Friday in the far southeast, an area bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan.&nbsp;

It also claimed that the allegations that a local police commander had sexually assaulted a teenage member of the Baluch Sunni minority had spurred those protests.&nbsp;

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR, asked the international community to take swift action against the Islamic Republic to stop the killing of Iranian protesters. The group called such acts "crimes against humanity."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, state media reported that the Iranian security forces battled with students at a renowned university in Tehran on Sunday.&nbsp;

Sharif University, historically a hub of resistance, was reportedly surrounded by dozens of riot police in numerous videos provided by the activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has about 160,000 followers.&nbsp;

In one of the videos, security personnel was seen pelting students with tear gas while distant gunfire could be heard in the background.&nbsp;

Security personnel could be seen pursuing scores of students who were stranded in the university's underground parking in another video. According to the report, many pupils had been detained.&nbsp;

However, there isn't any official verification of what reportedly happened at the university.&nbsp;

Iran: Classes suspended after clashes break out at major university over Mahsa Amini's death

As protests rage in Iran following the death of a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by the morality police, a senior Iranian cleric called for tough action against protesters.&nbsp;

"Our security is our distinctive privilege. The Iranian people demand the harshest punishment for these barbaric rioters," said Mohammad Javad Haj Ali Akbari, a leader of prayers that are held on Fridays in Tehran before a large gathering.

"The people want the death of Mahsa Amini to be cleared up...so that enemies cannot take advantage of this incident."

Amini hailed from the Iranian Kurdish town of Saqez and was arrested this month in Tehran for 'unsuitable attire'&nbsp;by the morality police who enforce the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women. She died in custody following which the entire country has been engulfed by protests, with women defying the hijab rule and cutting their hair.

The protests have spread to other countries as well. The demonstrations have quickly evolved into a popular revolt against the clerical establishment in Iran.&nbsp;

Amnesty International said on Friday the government crackdown on demonstrations has so far led to the death of at least 52 people, with hundreds injured. Despite the growing death toll and crackdown by authorities, videos posted on Twitter showed demonstrators calling for the fall of the clerical establishment.

Iran has come under international condemnation over Amini's death and its handling of the nationwide demonstrations.
