With the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 hanging in balance, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t taken any call on the future of the cash-rich tournament besides postponing it indefinitely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With lockdown and travel restrictions in place, the Indian board has been trying to find an alternate solution in a bid to conduct IPL 2020 later in the year.

However, given the popularity of IPL, there aren’t any dearth of suitors as after Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the Emirates Cricket Board has offered to host the 13th edition of the IPL in the United Arab Emirates. Interestingly, UAE had hosted 20 matches of IPL 2014 to avoid collision of dates with general elections in India. However, the BCCI is continuing to wait for things to clear up in India before taking a call, as per a report in a leading daily.

Would BCCI be open to moving IPL 2020 to a foreign land?

“The UAE has offered to host the IPL if we want them to. But right now when there is no international travel, there is no question of taking a call on that,” said BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal as per the report.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is still looking to host the IPL in India should the COVID-19 pandemic gets contained. The question remains, should the coronavirus curve doesn’t flatten in coming weeks or months, would BCCI be open to moving IPL 2020 to a foreign land?

“The health and security of players and all participants is our priority. At the moment, the entire world travel has come to a standstill, so there is nothing we can decide at this stage,” Dhumal said.

With Sri Lanka and UAE, TV timings won’t be an issue. But if it is hosted in India, the matches, in all likelihood, will be played behind closed doors with franchise losing out revenue from gate receipts. An IPL edition just for TV will at least protect the broadcast and title right deals of the BCCI. Interestingly, when the IPL was hosted by Cricket South Africa (CSA), the board made a turnover of $11.4 million.

“We have discussed amongst our committee members the proposal to host the IPL in Sri Lanka. We are in lockdown till May 11. Any further decision will be taken after that,” said SLC secretary Mohan de Silva.

UAE offers to host IPL 2020, BCCI yet to take a call

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is ready to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 after the 13th edition of the cash-rich tournament was suspended indefinitely by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The president of Sri Lanka Cricket – Shammi Silva – while speaking to Lankadeepa Newspaper – said that India is expected to have a look at the proposal by Sri Lanka to host IPL 2020. The SLC president cited the massive financial hit the BCCI will have to take if the IPL 2020 is not played due to the pandemic while adding that the Indian board can look at an alternative option as it did in the year 2009.

Official: IPL 2020 suspended till further notice amid COVID-19 pandemic

With the COVID-19 pandemic shattering the entire sporting calendar, all eyes are on the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29 before getting postponed till April 15. While almost the entire world is currently under lockdown to curb the spread of the dreaded COVID-19, there are major question marks on whether IPL 2020 will be played this year.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has said that the board is not in a position to take a final take on the fate of IPL 2020 and it would be “too premature” to comment on whether the cash-rich tournament could be played in place of ICC T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be played in October-November in Australia.

"Right now, the picture is very hazy. We don't even know when the lockdown will end and if we don't know, how can we even have a meaningful discussion. Once we get clarity from the government, we can then sit and take fresh stock of the situation. Any speculation about its future will be premature," Dhumal told PTI.

"Everyone wants IPL to happen but let's have some clarity first."

The BCCI treasurer confirmed that there was no conference call on Monday between the office bearers on Monday.

"We office-bearers are in constant touch. It's not just IPL but there is a huge amount of pending administrative work, legal issues that need to be studied. But there was no conference call scheduled today as there is nothing to discuss till current situation persists," Dhumal said.

He also provided some practical insight into rescheduling of IPL as speculations are rife about the October-November window.

There are major speculations that IPL 2020 could be played in place of ICC T20 World Cup. But that would need the postponement of the showpiece event.

"Tell me one thing. Firstly, if Australia is under lockdown for six months, how can we conclude that they will allow their players to travel from next month right away? What if the travel restrictions for its citizens are still in place? How will they come to India then? And don't forget that other boards also need to agree," Dhumal said.

"Secondly, even if the lockdown ends in India, what if some of the major cities still have those COVID ''hotspots''? Can we risk the lives of our sportspersons? Thirdly, the players are likely to go without training for months.

"Even if we are in a position to conduct a tournament, for international players, we need to give them a bare minimum time to do full-fledged training before we can start a tournament. All these factors can only be clear when we are in a position to discuss," Dhumal said.

Everyone wants IPL to happen but premature to comment on October-November window for IPL 2020: BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal

With almost the entire world going under lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, sporting calendar for the year 2020 has been ripped into pieces. Some of the biggest tournaments have already been either cancelled or postponed and all eyes are on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which was originally scheduled to start from March 29 before getting postponed till April 15.

With the situation surrounding COVID-19 in India deteriorating with each passing day, the future of IPL 2020 has been left hanging in balance. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has said that they are monitoring developments while adding nothing is in favour of any kind of sport in the world, forget IPL.

The former Indian captain further said that he will provide an official statement on the future of IPL on Monday (April 13) after discussing the latest developments with other office-bearers of the BCCI. However, Ganguly hinted it is highly improbable that the cash-rich tournament will take place this year as he said: “when life has come to a standstill, where does sport have future in this.”

"Spectators are important, but if the situation arises, I don't mind playing without them. Yes, as a player I won't get the vibe, but this will ensure that every fan will get to watch IPL on their TV," Harbhajan told the host broadcasters.

"We will have to be cautious about everything and should prioritise players' safety by ensuring that the match venues, team hotels, flights are properly sanitized. A lot of lives are on the line so we should organise IPL when everything is fine," he added.

IPL 2020, which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29, was suspended till April 15 in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. And given the current nationwide lockdown, it is unlikely that the cash-rich tournament will take place.

Harbhajan Singh fine with the idea of IPL 2020 behind closed doors

With the COVID-19 continuing to wreak havoc, the sporting calendar has been ripped into pieces. With all the major tournaments and events cancelled or postponed, all eyes are on the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which was suspended till April 15 in the wake of coronavirus outbreak in India.

While India is in under a 21-day lockdown period in a bid to curb the spread of deadly COVID-19, the likelihood of IPL 2020 looks bleak. England and Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler has said that it is a ‘big shame’ that IPL 2020 has been affected by the pandemic.

Buttler termed IPL as ‘massive’ for the revenue and crowd attraction it brings to the table while adding the future of IPL 2020 is indefinite as no one knows how the COVID-19 pandemic will last.

"I don't know any more than you know about when IPL would be played or people talking about whether it can be pushed back. At the moment, everything is quite indefinite as no one knows how long it will last. So it can't be decided at the moment when it could or could not happen," Buttler was quoted as saying by a news portal.

"As for the stature of the tournament, it's a massive, massive tournament. Revenue that is involved in IPL is massive. It is a very important competition to cricket and it's a big shame that it's not going ahead or whether it does have the way to push it in the schedule and allow it," the 2019 World Cup winner added.

As per reports, the BCCI is looking for an alternative window later in the year to conduct IPL 2020. However, that will mean some big-name players will miss out on the tournament due to bilateral commitments. "Of course, that might mean certain players might be unavailable. They will have to work through as the situation unfolds," Buttler concluded.

IPL 2020 for 5 weeks as warm-up for T20 World Cup? Michael Vaughan comes up with interesting suggestion

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take a call on the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 on around April 15 as the apex board is waiting for the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic to clear out with India continuing to remain in a 21-day lockdown to combat the deadly virus.

A source within the cricket governing body said the board cannot take a definite call unless the situation clears out while adding it might become really confusing if the BCCI takes a call now and situation changes around April 15.

“There is no clarity as of now when the situation improves, only then we can take a call. When the picture is so hazy, how can we take a call. Suppose we decide now, but the situation is not clear by April 15th, then what will happen,” the source told ANI.

With domestic and international travel completely restricted amid the lockdown, there are huge question marks on the availability of foreign players. The source said that there’s no point thinking about anything until the situation surrounding the visa restrictions clear out.

“Until and unless we are clear on visa restrictions, there could be country wise restrictions as well. So, we do not know what the situation will be, as of now the situation is so hazy, so there is no point in thinking about anything,” the source added.

There are plenty of talks around the BCCI planning to cut the salaries of players amid COVID-19 pandemic. However, the source within the BCCI said that the board has not even thought of cutting players’ wage.

“We have not thought about it, this is not even in our minds as of now,” the source said.

However, there’s a slight possibility that the cash-rich tournament could be played at a later window in 2020 with the BCCI searching for a free space later down the year.

“See if we had discussed some permutation or combination last time when we had met with franchises, but this depends on the window we finally get. If there is some window available, then only we can take a call. Right now, the entire country should just focus on when the situation improves,” the source said.

BCCI to take call on IPL 2020 after situation around COVID-19 improves

With the COVID-19 pandemic leaving the entire sporting calendar shattered, the fate of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 hangs in balance. While some of the players are training indoors while preparing for the cash-rich tournament, there’s a sense of uncertainty on whether IPL 2020 will be played or not.

The BCCI had postponed the IPL 2020 till April 15 after it was earlier scheduled to start on March 29. The decision to postpone the tournament came after COVID-19 outbreak in the country following which the Indian government had put restriction on international and domestic flights. Eventually, there was a 21-day lockdown in place to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

To answer the queries of players regarding IPL 2020 amid the lockdown, the official of one of the franchises have said that they have created a WhatsApp group where the players and officials can discuss things related to the tournament.

Franchises turn to WhatsApp groups to answer player queries as fate of IPL 2020 hangs in balance

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading like a wildfire, the fate of the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 has been left hanging in balance. While the BCCI did postpone the cash-rich tournament till April 15, there has been no confirmation on whether IPL 2020 will take place after it as India continues to remain in a 21-day lockdown period to combat the deadly virus.

Rajasthan Royals CEO Ranjit Barthakur on Wednesday revealed that any final call on IPL 2020 is unlikely to be taken before April 15 while adding that they are open to the idea of a shortened league with only Indian players.

"We are open to a shortened tournament with only Indian players, at the end of the day it is the Indian Premier League," Barthakur told PTI.

Rajasthan Royals ready to play shortened IPL 2020 with Indian players only: CEO Ranjit Barthakur

With the number of positive cases for COVID-19 rapidly rising in India, there have been massive question marks on the fate of much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which was scheduled to start on March 29 before being suspended until April 15 in the wake of novel coronavirus outbreak in the country. While the chances of conducting IPL 2020 seems low, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is trying its best to find a possible solution to hold the cash-rich tournament.

The BCCI is trying to free up the August-September window in the year 2020 in a bid to hold IPL 2020 given the situation surrounding the deadly COVID-19 improves in coming months. As per the original schedule, the Asia Cup will be played in September.

India will host England for three ODIs and as many T20Is. As a final preparatory measure for the ICC T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October, India will also play three T20Is against the Aaron Finch-led outfits with the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe set to be rescheduled.

Whereas England will host Pakistan with the series ending on September 2 before playing Ireland which will end on September 15. South Africa’s tour of the Windies will end on August 16.

Asia Cup 2020 to be postponed? BCCI looking to free August-September window for IPL 2020

England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler is hoping for at least a curtailed IPL this season, aware that it would be difficult to conduct the "massive tournament" in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

The league was originally scheduled to start on March 29 in Mumbai but it was postponed to April 15 to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has claimed more than 21,000 lives across the globe.

"No news at the moment. We saw, initially, that it was going to be postponed. It's very hard to see this changing in the immediate future, so I don't see that as a possibility at the moment," Buttler said in a skysports podcast.

"Obviously, it's such a massive tournament for world cricket, so hopefully some of it can go ahead - perhaps a shortened tournament."

Buttler also spoke about the duel between Jofra Archer and Steve Smith during the Ashes. Smith was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the side of the head by a Archer bouncer during the second Ashes Test at Lord's last year.

The Australian batsman was ruled out of the third Test after suffering concussion.

"That was Jofra's first Test - he came with a lot of expectations [on him] but for a guy to produce a spell on debut like he did was quite incredible," said Buttler.

"Any time we see some of the best Test cricket, it's always with great fast bowling; Jofra - a new kid on the block bowling extremely fast to the world's best batsman at Lord's in an Ashes Test."

"You could just feel that sense of anticipation every time that he ran in and you could see the speedgun getting quicker and quicker. There was that sense of something happening - incredible theatre and incredible drama," Buttler said.

"It was scary because [Smith] got hit on his neck or just beneath. People are very aware of what happened to Phillip Hughes, so there was huge worry for everyone."

Asked with whom he would least like to self-isolate with, Buttler quipped: "Ravi Ashwin, probably. It's actually a year ago since I got 'mankaded' because I keep getting tweeted about it, saying 'stay safe, don't go outside' with those pictures of me."

Ashwin on Wednesday had cited the 2019 IPL's Mankading incident involving Buttler to urge people to stay indoor during coronavirus lockdown in the country.

UK too has put its population under a lockdown and Buttler said the break has given him an opportunity to spend time with his daughter and he tries to do some exercise to keep himself fit.

"Obviously, very strange circumstances, but it's actually quite nice to spend some time at home, be with our little girl and actually just be a dad for a bit. I've also been doing some Pilates with my Mrs, in my cricket gear," he said.

"The calendar is always so busy, so you're trying to find times when you can get a bit of a break, so I'm trying to use the time as a positive - although, of course, it's really unfortunate circumstances and very tough for everyone."

Jos Buttler hoping for shortened IPL in wake of COVID-19 pandemic

After the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was postponed by a year, all eyes have shifted to the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The onus lies on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to deal with the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and take a final call on the cash-rich tournament which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29 but was suspended until April 15 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

However, the IPL franchises and stakeholders aren’t even discussing the IPL 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are not even discussing IPL right now. It will be premature to say anything but hosting the IPL this year looks a bit difficult,” a top franchise official told a leading daily.

While the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly looked pessimistic about conducting IPL 2020 later in the year due to the FTP being in place. A Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official has now said that all IPL related work was stopped in mid-march as the employees were forced to go on a work-from-home routine due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

We were already told not to hold IPL-related work till April 15,” said a Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official privy to the development.

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia was the first to announce a ban on IPL and that meant all IPL-related work at the Arun Jaitley Stadium – home ground of Delhi Capitals – including pitch preparation was halted mid-way.

“The IMGR (Delhi Capitals) guys came here last week and they were told about the developments. Even they looked less hopeful of the IPL taking place this year. Generally, it takes about two weeks for the pitch and construction work to complete before every IPL that means till the end of April it is highly unlikely,” the official added.

The fate of IPL 2020 hangs by thin thread with no preparations and talks

The novel coronavirus has left the entire world in a stand-still. While the worldwide economy has taken a massive hit, the sporting calendar has been left shattered as well. Almost every sporting event has been cancelled or postponed with all eyes on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which was earlier suspended until April 15. However, with the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to deteriorate with each passing day, the chances are extremely slim that the cash-rich tournament will go ahead after April 15.

As per a report, IPL 2020 might even not happen this year considering the current scenario due to the novel coronavirus. If the cash-rich tournament doesn’t take place in 2020 then the BCCI will take a massive hit on an approximate revenue of INR 2000 crore whereas the eight participating franchises could lose around IJNR 100 crore each.

“Nobody has clarity about the future. We don’t know when travel restrictions/visa restrictions will go, when things will settle down. Till then, there’s no point (thinking about the IPL),” a top BCCI official said.

However, the biggest hurdle for IPL will be to bring the overseas players on the same ship. While the coronavirus outbreak has taken almost the entire world under its dreaded wings, some big-name players could opt out of the tournament if it goes ahead in 2020.

“And even if it settles down here but continues in some other country… we are not clear about that also. Japan, the host nation of the Olympics, is talking about a possible postponement. This (the outbreak) is far bigger than any sport or the IPL,” the BCCI official said.

IPL 2020 unlikely to happen this year; BCCI could lose Rs 2000cr, franchises Rs 100cr each

There has been a lot of talks surrounding the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) which was earlier scheduled to start from March 29 but got suspended until April 15 amid the coronavirus pandemic that has wrecked havoc not only in India but the entire world. The sporting calendar has already been destroyed with many major events and tournaments getting either postponed or completely cancelled.

With the novel coronavirus spreading like a wildfire and at least 137 positive cases being reported in India, including foreign nationals, the sporting calendar including the IPL 2020 has been shredded into pieces. While the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) being optimistic of conducting the cash-rich tournament after April 15, IPL franchises are ready for a scenario wherein foreign players will need to be quarantined for at least 14 days once they fly to India.

"Yes, the fresh advisory calls for 14-day quarantine for travel from some countries and if the stance remains the same post March 31, that shouldn't be an issue. If we get a clearance from the government and visas are issued, then quarantining the players shouldn't be a big deal. In such a scenario, we can fly them into the country in the first week of April and follow the process of 14-day quarantine,” an official of one of the franchises was quoted as saying by an agency.

"But first, the foreign players need to be given the visa and that is why we need to wait till March 31 to see what the government decides going forward," the official added.

Meanwhile, the franchise owners are in constant communication and even held a conference call on Monday where they evaluated the entire situation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. However, there was no update provided as the situation has not improved with reported cases increasing with each passing day.

Coronavirus effects cricket: IPL 2020 franchises up for quarantining foreign players if needed

With the novel coronavirus spreading like a wildfire, the sporting calendar has been massively disrupted. All the major tournaments and sporting events have been either postponed or cancelled keeping the safety and welfare of all involved in the respective events. The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 was suspended until April 15 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and it remains to be seen whether the cash-rich tournament will take place with the situation surrounding the deadly virus escalating with each passing day.

Sports Minister, Kiren Rijiju provided an update on IPL 2020 as he said the government will come up with a new set of advisory after April 15. Rijiju further said the matter surrounding IPL 2020 includes the safety of citizens as there will be thousands of spectators watching the mega event while adding that hence, the advisory is not just for sporting bodies or athletes but for every citizen of India.

Government to come up with new advisory and guidelines after April 15

"After April 15 the government will come up with new advisory and guidelines according to the situation. BCCI is a body that looks after cricket which is not an Olympic sport. But here it is not the question of the sporting event alone but a question of the safety of the citizens. In an event, there will be thousands of spectators. So it is not just for the sports bodies or sportspersons it is for every citizen of the country," Rijiju said.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has already said that it will continue to evaluate the situation surrounding the novel coronavirus and take a call as things develop. While a complete IPL 2020 looks unlikely, a truncated version of the tournament is on the cards given the situation improves in the coming days or weeks.

As of Friday, at least 195 positive COVID-19 cases, including 32 foreigners, have been reported in India.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju provides update on future of IPL 2020

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to schedule the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in July and September. While IPL 2020 was earlier set to kickstart from March 29, the novel coronavirus pandemic has left the sporting calendar in tatters, forcing the authorities to suspend the cash-rich tournament until April 15.

There have been talks of a truncated IPL 2020 with a shortened playing window and it looked like the authorities had a proper 'Plan B' on cards. However, as per a leading daily, as things have been developing, it seems the Indian cricket board is looking for a complete tournament consisting as many as 60 matches, if not now then on a later window, if not in India then overseas, if not with the complete pool of foreign players then some.

The Future Tours Programme (FTP), which is cricket's annual calendar, for the year 2020 has not many significant tournaments or bilateral series between July and September barring the Asia Cup T20, scheduled to be played in September. Pakistan versus England, and Ireland versus England, in the limited-overs circuit, are two bilateral series falling in the July-September bracket.

However, the likes of Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, don't have a packed window barring the last three's participation in the Asia Cup T20.

Going by Team India's calendar, the Virat Kohli-led outfit is scheduled to play just three ODIs and as many T20Is in Sri Lanka in June/July.

It will be interesting to see what decision BCCI takes given how the situation surrounding the novel coronavirus pans out in the coming weeks.

Coronavirus pandemic: BCCI looking to conduct IPL 2020 in July-September window

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 getting suspended until April 15 amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the cricket fans have been left with nothing to feast their eyes on. Even all eight IPL franchises have suspended their pre-tournament training camps keeping the health of players, support staff and fans in mind.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were one of the first franchises to have cancelled their pre-IPL camp with players returning back home with the situation surrounding COVID-19 deteriorating with each passing day. MS Dhoni, who was supposed to make his return to the cricket field in IPL 2020, had started his preparation for the cash-rich tournament only to see it getting postponed amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Having returned to his home town Ranchi, from Chennai, Dhoni was seen continuing his fitness regime as the former Indian skipper was spotted sweating it out on a badminton court in the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

Dhoni was last seen playing for India in the ICC World Cup 2019 where the Men in Blue had crashed out in the semi-final after a heart-breaking defeat to New Zealand. Since then, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has been on a sabattical from the gentlemen's game and a lot was riding on his performances in IPL 2020 relating to his return to the Indian team.

Meanwhile, India recorded its third death due to coronavirus as a 64-year-old patient died in Mumbai's Kasturba hospital on Tuesday. Furthermore, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 has risen to 125 in India.

With the novel coronavirus spreading like a wildfire, the Delhi government has banned all sporting activities, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 matches and other conferences until further notice, announced Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday (March 13). The Delhi government's ban will be specific to events where gatherings of 200 people or more are likely. However, this comes as a major blow to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL Governing Council ahead of their meeting on March 14 (Saturday).

"Thousands of people will come for these events, from all over. There is no way to know who is coming, where they are coming from and no way to control their arrival. It takes only one person to spread this disease, to be a carrier," Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

"For this reason, the government has decided to ban these events. Right now, social distancing is the best solution. We have asked all District Magistrates and Sub-District Magistrates to follow all orders from the Health Department," he added.

Future of IPL 2020 unclear?

Even though it is yet unclear whether IPL 2020 matches will be allowed to take place in empty stadiums, as it will happen in the remaining two ODIs of the India vs South Africa ODI series. Meanwhile, Delhi have followed Maharashtra's footstep where the state government has banned ticket sales of IPL 2020.

However, it will be interesting to see the outcome of the IPL Governing Council meeting which will be held on March 14 (Saturday). All the IPL franchises have been invited to the meeting and it is highly likely that the cash-rich tournament will be pushed back with more afternoon matches and doubleheaders to be played.
